Theo Angelopoulos, one of the worlds greatest filmmakers of our time, was killed in a traffic accident, while shooting in the port of Piraeus, on the set of his last film, The Other Sea. A unique and incomparable talent who has forged a film language of his own that some tried but none could emulate, his departure leaves us so much poorer, with a cinema bereft of poetry and artistic inspiration, relying more than .ever on technological gimmicks. And to other, more worldly matters. Jean-Claude Carriere, Europes best known scriptwriter, also a novelist, dramatic author, essayist and more, visited Israel as the guest of the Jerusalem Sam Spiegel School for Film and Television to lead several master classes for its students. We met him at the school for a long conversation which turned into a sort of introduction to scriptwriting replete with examples from his long, fifty odd years, career and his work with the likes of Pierre Etaix, Luis Bunuel, Milos Forman, Louis Malle, Peter Brook, Volker Schloendorff and many others. He also allowed us to translate a short piece he wrote about the last days of Luis Bunuel, the one director and writing partner he has always felt closest to. The border line between documentary and fiction is often hard to define, sometimes crosses several times within the same film, and it was about time, with three Israeli films playing this game in the course of the last year, Invisible, Another Planet and Testimony, for a more detailed discussion on this topic. Shmulik Duvdevani and Invisibles director Michal Aviad, both teaching at the Film Department of the TelAviv University, tried to bring some light to this topic. The success of Andrei Tarkovskys retrospective at the Israeli Cinematheques persuaded us there is room for yet another look at his work and Marat Parkhomovskys piece suggests art and religion meet on equal grounds in the films of the great late Russian director. Closer to home, a student at the Jerusalem Universitys Communications Department, Jonathan Schreber, looked at Josef Cedars latest hit movie, Footnote, and found in it traces of various holy writs, an unusual perspective to look at films in this country. Finally, Amir Vodka latched onto the new version of a classic sci-fi horror movie, The Thing (one known as The Thing from Another Planet) to unravel the metaphors that do not necessarily refer to the future but very much to the present of one and all. For the record, the first version, made 60 years ago, was produced by Howard Hawks (who took an unaccredited hand in the direction as well), the second was directed almost 40 years ago by John Carpenter and the latest one is signed by Matthijs van Heijningen.
