Lake Grace‘s Senior Citizens gather on Thursday 3rd December for the last senior‘s luncheon for 2009, an opportunity to get into the festive spirit and enjoy each other‘s company before the holiday season.

The brainchild of Lake Grace CWA, the luncheons have been a highlight on many calendars since 1976 when the idea for a monthly meal, bringing all of Lake Grace‘s senior citizens together first started. The idea for the shared meal came from a senior citizen saying to a CWA lady that after losing a partner the thing they missed most was sitting

down to a meal together and chatting; meal time became a constant reminder that you were on your own and was a very lonely time of the day.

With that in mind the CWA invited other groups within the community to cater for a meal at the CWA rooms on the first Thursday of every month (except January), senior citizens attending paid a token amount for the meal (costs were covered but there was to be no profit). The idea was embraced and is still going strong 33 years later.

Editorial Firstly a huge thank you to the many volunteers that we have help with the paper in 2009. Since July of this

year it has become compulsory for us to keep stats on the hours our volunteers spend helping us out, prior to that I just guessed. Having limited time management skills my guessing was way out. Our volunteers give an average of 50 hours a month! Well done and thank you to you all. It has been wonderful to have (the marvellous) Miranda Wallace helping with the printing of these last two papers.

Volunteers, Committee and Staff would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas (not too merry) and a wonderful 2010. Thank you to everyone who supports our paper whether it be in the way of advertising, editorial, volunteering or reading the end product. We are looking forward to an equally rewarding relationship in 2010.

Now it‘s time for Ebenezer to kick in! The Lake Grace Telecentre is unique in the 24 hour memberships it offers, I have been told by many who have made use of this that they have not encountered a facility such as this anywhere else in the world. Others within the Telecentre network think that we are crazy for handing over keys for people to access the facilities any time that they wish. Naturally we display an enormous amount of trust and 90% of members respect this. However every now and then trust suffers another tragic blow! Some members think it is OK to bring in all of their friends! Some decide to sell their keys to others! Others don‘t comprehend that their children (under 18) aren‘t allowed to come in on their own after hours. Then there‘s others who think that a packet of biscuits shoved to the back of the cupboard is for them or that Suzanne had purchased cool drink just for them. All very petty and minor things I know but the camel‘s back has been broken and 24hr memberships are under threat. If you are a member, or you have employees who are members please instil in them the importance of this facility for those who are future visitors/workers to Lake Grace.

Well done to all of those who have got their subscription forms back in for 2010. If you are wishing to subscribe to the Lakes Link please get your subscription forms filled in and returned with payment before Christmas. If you need a tax invoice please email the Telecentre and I can send you one. Please don‘t wait till April of 2010 to realise that you forgot to fill out your subscription form. If by chance you didn't get a subscription form in the last paper we have spares at the Telecentre.

At this stage I‘m not sure whether the Telecentre will go to reduced hours over January, just keep in mind that if you‘re coming in especially to get something done it may pay to ring ahead. We will be open on the Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday between Christmas and New Year.

If you have an adolescent ready to do their drivers licence please make sure that they bring their original documents in for ID. A birth extract or certificate is needed plus something with their street/road address such as a bank statement or an ATM card. All of the information for what is needed is in the Drive Safe handbook.

STOP PRESS....Elders interest rates have zoomed up so ignore the interest rates on their advert on page 22 and give Elders a ring for their current rates.

FASHION FOR THE SALT OF THE EARTH

Lake Grace Visitors Centre opened their doors on Saturday 5

th December for anyone wishing to make

Christmas purchases of local produce or take advantage of the presence of Tupperware representative Melissa Clifford, Phoenix Trading agent Alison Dines and Anna-Lisa Newman with her Bottle House Creations (Skincare and Beauty Products). Visitor‘s Centre and tourism representative, Trish Medlen, was pleased with the response from locals who took advantage of this shopping opportunity. Not only does it help local cottage industry but it raises the profile of the Visitor‘s Centre, showing the local community

what they have on offer. Melissa has been a Tupperware representative for some years and enjoys being able to sell a product that everyone wants in their cupboard. Alison Dines has only recently become an agent for Phoenix Trading, a company with a broad range of greeting cards, gift wrap and assorted stationery; and is incredulous at the quality and economical price of the cards and wrapping paper. Anna-Lisa‘s products have proven to be a big hit on the local market, selling on reputation and a scent so divine you could eat them!!

All the staff at Rosie‘s

wish their customers a safe and

happy Christmas and a prosperous

New Year.

On Thursday 10th December nine Year 10 students

graduated from Lake Grace District High School with the ceremony being held at the Shire Hall. The night was a great success with the graduates dressing up and looking very nice in their outfits.

The graduates of 2009 were Matt McWhirter, Krystal King, Gabbie Trevenen, Leaf Milosavljevic, Siera Berdin, Jehl Dejito, Greg Amores, Byron Campbell and Harley Pittard.

First the graduates arrived at the school for photos, after which they walked to the Shire Hall for a 6.00pm entry. The guests, who included family and staff, were waiting for their arrival.

Speeches were given by School Principal Mr Boyland, Head Girl Krystal King and Head Boy Harley Pittard. Following the evening‘s formalities the Year 8 and 9 students joined the graduating year 10‘s for a disco.

Everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves and the Year 10 students would all like to say a special thanks to their teachers for the help they have received this year. They would also like to thank Matt Power for organising the disco and the Year 9 parents for all of their wonderful cooking. The food was great!!

Before TV came out the main entertainment for Lake Grace and surrounding towns was the Drive-In. The land was originally owned by Mr Phillip Trevenen. Mr Laurie Thiel was looking for a place to run a business so he asked Mr Trevenen if he would sell him a small block of land on the Newdegate road.

Laurie Thiel first opened the Drive-In in 1965 and he sold it in 1978. Most nights you would get about 160 cars to 200. It would cost about 5 or 6 shillings to get in and the gates opened at 6pm for meals, the picture show started at 8pm.

The films came up on the train from Perth and sometimes special movies were held on Wednesday and Friday nights. Some people would hide in the boot so they didn‘t have to pay. When it was cold people would put on their windscreen wipers because the glass would fog up.

Mr Thiel also invented things to help him with his work at the Drive-In, for example he had a washing machine bowl (it was rough on the inside) and as it turned it took off the potato skins. He also had a chip cutter which was set up on a bench with a bucket under it.

Sometimes people would drive out with the speaker still attached to their car and Laurie would have to spend hours picking up the speakers.

Alan and Hazel Thiel took over the Drive-In when Laurie Thiel got to a certain age. It was hard having the children for when they were babies Hazel had to take them to work. She would be feeding the baby while serving hungry customers and cooking the food when she finally got her babies off to sleep. After the movie ended Hazel would take her babies home then have to wake them up so she could get them dressed and ready for bed.

Most people had their own special spots where they liked to park. The café sold cool drinks, lollies, ice creams, burgers, fish and chips. Hot milk coffee and sweet-sour fish served on a bed of rice became a very popular dish. Some people would come just to get takeaway food for dinner.

Lynn and Anne Parker owned the Drive-In, they

purchased it in April 1977 from Mr and Mrs Alan and Hazel Thiel and ran it until 1986. According to the Parkers the Drive-Inn was known as Hillcrest.

On Wednesday nights the movies were R-rated. Friday/Saturday nights a support with a feature and on occasions a cartoon. When they opened Sundays the movies were different from the Friday/Saturday Sessions. For the Parkers the biggest attendance was when they showed The Man from Snowy River. On the first night 180 cars and the second night they had 100 cars. One night during the early 1980s on a Sunday someone set off some fire crackers from the top of the screen as a joke.

One year the local school was fundraising for a school camp and a class of school kids came to pick up the rubbish after the Friday/Saturday sessions for a few weeks. A donation was made to the school to help with the cost of the camp. When videos came into fashion during the mid 80‘s and television reception improved, Parker‘s reduced the number of sessions per week to two nights. The screen was made of asbestos sheeting with steel frame. During 1982 it was painted by Greg Argent. Late 1986 it was removed due to zoning laws.

The Drive-In‘s café was turned into a 3 bedroom, 2 toilet family home. Today Ben, Annie and Seth Argent own the land where the Drive-In once was.

Lake Grace Telecentre has undergone a revamp with the installation of new benches. When the building was erected eleven years ago the computer area only had four allotted spaces for computers. With an increase of traffic through the years the Telecentre squeezed another two computers in. Flatscreen monitors have given opportunity for benches to be able to be narrower and with most computer users simply wanting to update their facebook or email friends; they don‘t have a need for lots of bench space.

The old benches were removed on Friday 4th December and local cabinet maker, Nick Trevenen, installed the new benches on the following Saturday. ―The new design has made more viable use of space within the computer area. With a growing number of members and an increase in the number of walk in customers the Telecentre will be better able to fulfill the needs of

its clients‖ said Telecentre Coordinator Suzanne Reeves. With the benches complete the four new computers which were part of a successful grant application earlier in the year were able to be installed. Funding for the new benches was provided by the Telecentre which has had a savings plan underway for some years in case of future projects that needed to be undertaken.

Watch out for SAMM

The Shire of Lake Grace will be putting the speed trailer (SAMM) in the main street during December. This is an accurate way for drivers to check the accuracy of their

speedo (yes SAMM is right).

Remember that modifications such as larger tyres on a car can affect the accuracy of

your speedo.

From the CEO’s Desk

I have received a letter from the Minister for Local Government advising that he has considered the Reform Submission provided by the Shire of Lake Grace. In the letter, the Minister has thanked the Shire of Lake Grace for the significant and commendable effort made in contributing to the State Government‘s reform process. In short the Minister has determined that the optimal (best) reform option for the Shire of Lake Grace is to engage with neighbouring local governments to form a Regional Transition Group (RTG). The aim of the RTG is to provide a framework for the transition of the Shire and its neighbours into one shire by 2013.

The Department of Local Government will contact me shortly to let me know who the other local governments will be. A number of Wheatbelt local governments are objecting to this process and are now calling a meeting of all local governments to protest to the Minister. At this point it is business as usual and I will continue to keep our communities informed regarding the reform process.

On a personal note, thank you to those various community groups that have invited my family and I to their various Christmas functions. So far we have had the opportunity to attend the Lake Grace Telecentre Christmas function which was a great night. In particular I enjoyed meeting many more members of the Lake Grace community. It is also fantastic to see how the Christmas lights around town are growing. Please remember the White Ribbon campaign and drive safely on our roads during the Christmas period.

Wishing you all a very merry Christmas and a happy New Year Sean Fletcher

The Hockey Trolls are back from their international tour, having successfully lured the Fijian locals into backing Lake Grace local Fleur O‘Neill and her Australian team mates to secure the silver medal.

All games were played in Suva at the Fijian National Hockey Stadium. Following four games the Australian Country Under 21‘s hockey team were second on the ladder and needed to play the local Fijian team (who

were third on the ladder) to secure their place in the gold medal play-off.

Australian had a solid win against Fiji with a 4-1 result. The Grand Final was played on Saturday with Australia facing up to New Zealand Maori. Unfortunately Australia went down 2-1, with Fleur scoring Australia‘s only goal.

In January 1610 Galileo Galilei announced the discovery of the four bright moons of Jupiter. So when you see the bright planet in the evening remember this happened 400 years ago. Once darkness falls, turn your attention toward the north/east for the finest views of MARS in 2 years. The red planet reaches opposition and peak visibility on January 29th when it shines at magnitude -1.3 in the constellation of Cancer the Crab. The north position of Mars gives you a good view of the north polar ice cap and subtle dark markings. If you own some coloured eyepiece filters, try a blue or violet filter to enhance the Polar Regions, and a red or orange filter to bring out the dark patches. SATURN will be the next planet in the evening sky during the next paper in February.

Everyone have a happy Christmas and a good start to 2010.

Western Australians are being warned about a phone scam where the caller claims to be a Fair Trading official who can reimburse overcharged bank fees.

WA ScamNet – part of Consumer Protection – has received a high number of calls about the phishing scam, which has also targeted people in New South Wales.

WA Commissioner for Consumer Protection Anne Driscoll wants to make sure consumers are not tricked into giving out sensitive personal information because they believe they are dealing with someone they can trust.

“The scammers provide a phone number and ask to be called back, answering as „The Office of Fair Trading‟ when they pick up the receiver,” she said.

“Thankfully most of the calls we‟ve had have been from people who have realised it was a scam, however two people have reported sending nearly $300 in advance fees to an alleged representative in India.

“If people receive an offer that appears too good to be true, even from a trusted organisation, they should contact the organisation via their publically listed telephone number to confirm the offer is legitimate, rather than relying on the numbers supplied by the caller or an email.

“I want to make it absolutely clear to people in WA that Consumer Protection and other Fair Trading organisations would never randomly call members of the community to ask for banking details. If you get a call like this, hang up.”

In November Consumer Protection‟s advice line answered 415 calls about scams and responded to 1,546 emails about scams.

Wishing everyone a Merry Christmas and

a Happy New Year.

Just seems like yesterday that WA’s Education Department changed the enrolment ages for children starting school. Instead of beginning year one the year you turned 6, you had to be 6 before the end of June. Those having their birthdays from 1

st July onwards were

then relegated to the following year.

Those children who formed that inaugural year of change have now graduated from year 7!

On the evening of Wednesday 9th of December

the Year 7 class graduated from Primary School. It was a very successful night starting with a slide show of the Year 7‘s baby and toddler photos.

Lake Grace District High School Principal Mr Boyland, Year 7 teacher Mrs Jones, parents and the Year 7 class sat down for a dinner of chicken, salad and potatoes followed by a dessert of fruit salad and ice cream. Everyone attending was very grateful to Jeanette Trevenen, Bambi Lay, and Lucy Farrelly for providing the meal.

Mrs Jones gave a presentation about the Year 7‘s and what they have been up to, this also included a slide show. Mrs Jones then gave out awards to the class. These awards were the ‗cheekiest award‘ (Travers), ‗the one and

only‘ (Jock), ‗the giggling gerty‘ (Brooke) and ‗the quietest mouse‘ (Tenika). The night ended with Jocks‘ famous rap. Overall the evening was great and so was the food.

View From The Shed Temper Outbursts, Why?

Have you ever had a temper outburst that you later regret? I think we all have at times but do we understand what is happening in ourselves when this type of thing happens. Some people will say ―I have a short fuse – it doesn‘t take much to set me off!‖ This could be true but our anger is something we need to understand and manage.

Anger is one of the core emotions and in certain circumstances is a legitimate response. If we are passionate about something and we see an injustice a rise in emotional anger is often what spurs us into action.

Unfortunately our anger is sometimes dissipated through a violent outburst, either physical or verbal, and often directed at the wrong people. When this happens our misdirected venom can have dire consequences.

Sometimes we can have a frustrating day, when we get home our emotional glass is nearly full and we haven‘t been able to relieve the pent up emotion on anyone so we are just seething inside. It could be the children, just being children, but they cop an earful, not because they are naughty but because you are distressed.

All too often this type of event is played out with

someone near and dear to us, and we often don‘t realize we are doing it which pushes those closest to us, who are in the best place to help, away.

At this time of year there are many frustrations, give some thought as to how you manage these, before they turn into pent up anger which bursts out in very inappropriate ways.

As I said earlier I think we all have these unfortunate events and if they happen to you consider what is causing them. If you do erupt inappropriately be quick to apologize and set the record straight. I have found that people are forgiving if we are big enough to concede we over reacted to something.

If we acknowledge a problem we are also in a stronger place to get over it. Our policy applies here ―don‘t let it get too much – TALK TO A MATE‖. We all need to from time to time, it certainly makes life more bearable.

New laws that the Government had introduced this bushfire season were tested out on Monday 14th December with a Total Fire Ban being issued from midnight through to midnight for the Lake Grace Shire. Coming into effect on Tuesday 1st December, it is hoped the new laws will strengthen the co-ordination and management of bushfires in WA.

Total Fire Bans (TFB) Total Fire Bans (TFB) are declared because of extreme weather conditions or when widespread fires are seriously stretching resources. They are declared on days where fires are most likely to threaten lives and property. They consider local conditions such as how moist the soil is or the amount of trees and bush in an area that could burn during a fire. When a TFB is declared it is illegal to do anything that is likely to start a fire.

What are people not allowed to do during a TFB?

If you live in a shire where a TFB is in place you must not:

cook outside using an open fire

move vehicles or equipment across a paddock

harvest

undertake ‗hot work‘ such as metal work, grinding or the like unless you have an exemption

What can people do during a TFB? During a TFB people can still:

use a gas cooker or barbecue with an enclosed flame or an electrical stove at home or in a designated area. Many recreation sites within local government areas have gas or electric barbecues installed, which may be used at any time

use a chainsaw, plant or grass trimmer or lawn mower but it is best to postpone this work as it could still start a fire

smoke but put out your cigarettes or cigars properly, and safely dispose of the butt

undertake essential feeding and watering of your stock

undertake any work covered by a current exemption as long as you meet any special conditions that apply

What is the penalty for breaching a TFB? You could be fined up to $25 000 or jailed for 12 months or both if you ignore a TFB.

How do people apply for an exemption? An exemption may be granted if you can show you are taking proper steps to prevent any fire spreading, and can control and put out any fire that might start. Exemptions can cover specific times and locations, and can be changed or cancelled at any time. Industries that already have exemptions from FESA for operations during the Prohibited Burning Times will have to approach FESA for the additional exemption, if required. New activities needing exemption from any provision will be guided by FESA through the one application process.

You will be able to apply for an exemption permit by downloading an application form from FESA‘s website www.fesa.wa.gov.au or call your FESA regional office.

How is a TFB different to a Bushfire Emergency period? Prior to the proposed legislation being enacted, declaring a Bushfire Emergency was the only way to ban open fires and activities likely to start a fire across the State. This was very bureaucratic and onerous on both FESA and industries affected because exemptions for essential activities had to be arranged at the time of declaration – not before. The new TFB provision allows for exemptions that satisfy the needs of local government and FESA to be granted prior to any activity taking place.

How can I find out if a TFB has been declared? A TFB declaration can be found on FESA‘s on website at www.fesa.wa.gov.au, and by listening to ABC. Media will also be asked to broadcast and publish all TFBs. A TFB sign will be used on local government Fire Danger Ratings signs on roadside verges.

How will the area for a TFB be defined? A TFB will be declared using local government boundaries. You can check if your shire has a TFB by going to www.fesa.wa.gov.au and clicking on the TFB map icon.

What about in large shires? It is expected TFBs will be declared for whole shires.

How many days a year are likely to have TFBs? TFBs are likely to be declared on days where the fire danger index is higher than 50. Depending on where you live and how bad the season is, your area may be subject to a TFB for just a few days per season or for up to 24 days.

What‟s the formula for declaring a TFB? There is no formula however TFBs are likely to be declared on days where the Bureau of Meteorology forecasts a fire danger index of 50 or more. This means days where the fire danger rating is extreme, severe or catastrophic. TFBs may be declared for a single shire, several shires or the whole state. TFBs may also be declared when there have been widespread fires and resources are stretched.

Claire Sherwood, Co-ordinator of Dementia and Memory Community Centre Education Services, felt that the people who came along were relieved to have asked questions about changes in memory, and to have ‗passed‘ the memory test; going away with a better understanding of dementia.

Currently, there are about 20,000 people in Western Australia living with dementia and more than 200,000 nationally (Access Economics, Dementia Estimates and Projections: Western Australia and its Regions, 2005). This national figure is expected to rise to nearly 465,000 people nation-wide by the year 2031. (Dementia in Australia, Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, 2007).

Alzheimer's Australia WA has provided invaluable information, education and support services to people throughout the State with dementia and their families for more than 25 years. The Memory Van is an excellent example of how organisations like AAWA provide informative services that are helping Western Australians learn about dementia and improve diagnosis as well as educating the community.

The Memory Van offers:

Free word recall/recognition memory testing;

A demonstration and trial of the Posit Science Brain Training Program;

Information about the seven lifestyle changes to reduce the risk of dementia;

A range of brochures and information on dementia and Alzheimer's Australia WA services; and

Access to web-based dementia information.

The van is run by Alzheimer's Australia WA staff who are available to answer questions about memory concerns and provide information on available support services – if necessary. In addition, the Australian Government funds the AAWA‘s Dementia and Memory Community Centre at its Shenton Park premises. This centre offers services and activities for people wanting to find out about memory loss, ageing and what they may do to reduce the risk of developing dementia.

Alzheimer's Australia WA was founded in 1982 by carers of people with dementia. It is the state‘s peak body providing information, support, advocacy and education for people with dementia. Alzheimer's

Australia WA offers a range of services to people with dementia and their carers, including a variety of respite services, support services, education and training for carers and care workers and information through its specialised resource centre.

After pulling up stumps at the Lakes Village Memory Van staff ran a two hour workshop at the Hospital on ‘Delirium and Other Causes of Confusion‘, with nine hospital staff in attendance, and much knowledge gained and confirmed. Memory Van staff enjoyed the opportunity to raise the awareness of and educate on dementia in the Lake Grace community.

Young coaches and officials can now apply for their share of the Australian Sports Commission’s annual $1.6 million Local Sporting Champions grants — an Australian Government initiative to support junior sport.

Previously only available to young athletes, the Local Sporting Champions grants eligibility criteria has been broadened to recognise the importance of supporting young coaches and officials — crucial to Australia‘s sporting grass roots.

‗Sporting competitions and achievements would not be possible without our young coaches and officials and these grants are one way the Australian Sports Commission is recognising their commitment and dedication to their chosen sporting field,‘ said Judy Flanagan, ASC Director of Community Sport.

The grants of $500 per individual and $3,000 per team are available to help meet costs such as travel, equipment, uniforms, and accommodation. To be eligible to apply, applicants must be aged between 12-18 years and travelling more than 250km to participate as an athlete, coach, umpire or referee in upcoming state or national level sporting competitions.

‗I encourage our young coaches and officials participating in state and national level competitions to go to the ASC web site to fill in an application form. There is nothing to lose and a lot to gain, so why not give it a go?‘ Judy Flanagan said.

The grants support young people participating, coaching or officiating in official state or national sporting competitions and are administered by the ASC in association with Local Members of Parliament.

Applications for the 2009/10 grant cycle are now open, so if you know someone eligible get them to apply now! For further information go to www.ausport.gov.au/participating/schools_and_juniors/juniors/get_involved/local_sporting_champions

Wheatbelt South Tourism Group in recess.

Next year the Visitor Centre will have a manager for approx two days per week, this we hope will generate an improved network for volunteers.

Youth Advisory Council: The Shire is re-establishing the Junior Council to include the Youth Advisory Council. Accommodation Committee: Lloyd Collins, property consultant visited Lake Grace and was very impressed with the facilities around the town for the size, he will write up a report on what we have and make suggestions on how to progress the development of a motel. Community Cropping: Ready for harvest when people have finished their own crops. General Business: Bus Committee; Kevin Seaman spoke about what has been happening with the bus committee for the last few years. Although they now have the support of the Shire they will remain under the umbrella of the LGDA with funds continuing to go through the LGDA. The bus is

used often and is popular in the community. Hand rails are going to be fitted into the bus, a step will also be placed in the bus for easier access. Elsie Bishop is the contact person for booking the bus. Camera Club & WA Grains Group: Both Groups applied for Sub Committee status under the umbrella of the Development association and were accepted. The Toy Library: Currently has 13 members and the committee is hoping that with continued promotion of the library this number may increase. Pamphlets produced by the Western Australian Toy Library Association have been distributed to the Telecentre for the welcome package and to the child health clinic. Library membership fees have remained at $54 for a single child and $66 for two and $72 for three or more. In July 2009 the Toy Library received grant funds from the FRRR and purchased new toys for the library. Community Garden: The original concept has died as there was not enough interest in the project. Discussed ideas to change the garden and came to the conclusion for a ―Demonstration Water Wise Garden‖ placing local nature shrubs and trees in the area.

I recently travelled through the Wheat-

belt with the Chamber of Commerce and

Industry (CCIWA) to hear first-hand the

issues these communities are dealing

with and what makes country businesses

tick. The tour included events and

meetings in Northam, Merredin, Hyden,

Corrigin, Wagin and Narrogin to

familiarise the CCIWA with business

issues in the Wheatbelt. People raised

concerns including land availability, red

tape, skills shortages, transport costs and

lack of infrastructure – but were

generally positive about the outlook for

business in their town.

Royalties for Regions Through Royalties for Regions, the

equivalent of 25 per cent of the State’s

mining and onshore petroleum

royalties will be returned to the State’s

regional areas each year as an

additional investment in projects,

infrastructure and community

services. The Royalties for Regions

Bill was debated in the Legislative

Council this month as one of the final

stages of this policy becoming law. It

was disappointing that Members of

the Labor Party and Greens argued

that the funding was not being spent

strategically. By inference, this is

suggesting that funding for the Royal

Flying Doctor Service or funding for

the Country Aged Pension Fuel Card,

and the Country Local Government

Fund is not money well spent. The

notion that regional communities will

squander or waste these funds is

laughable. You know the value of a

Spotlight on Mid West housing I co-hosted a forum in late November to discuss

Mid West housing issues with key government

and private sector representatives. I have been

working with the Mid West Development

Commission and the Shires of Perenjori,

Mingenew, Morawa and Three Springs to ensure

hinterland communities benefit from resources

projects in the region. The forum identified the

opportunities for sustainable population growth

and highlighted the importance of having quality

and afford-able housing available in the towns.

Booming Boddington I visited Boddington in early November – home

to one of Australia’s largest gold mines. I met

with the Shire President and CEO to discuss key

issues including the impact of growth on services

and land availability and plans for a new

childcare and medical centre. A key message

from the Shire and meetings with other key

stakeholders in the town was the importance of

continuing the Boddington District High School’s

VET programme for year 11 and 12’s into the

future. I have met with the Minister for Training

and am hopeful of a positive outcome.

Some wise men from the East went looking for the baby Jesus. They saw a star in Bethlehem and it went ahead of them until it stopped over the place where the baby Jesus was. They went into the house, and when

they saw the child with his mother Mary, they knelt down and worshipped him. They brought out their gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh, and presented them

to him. (Luke 2: 1-12 Adapted)

SCIENCE AND STUFF FRIENDLY BACTERIA KEEP YOUR SKIN DEFENCES IN CHECK: Being caked in germs sounds unpleasant, but “friendly” bacteria living on our skin may play a vital role by keeping in check the inflammation triggered by injury and unwanted bacteria. The discovery extends the list of bacteria that the human body relies on to function. It also suggests that antibacterial hand gels and soaps might exacerbate skin conditions characterised by excessive inflammation. The most common family of bacteria found on the skin is Staphylococcus, the members of which are often harmless, unless they get into wounds. To see if they might actually be useful to humans, Richard Gallo at the University of California, San Diego, and colleagues added molecules released by Staphylococcus to cells found in human skin. They found that one molecule, called lipoteichoic acid (LTA), stopped some skin cells from releasing chemicals that trigger inflammation, part of the body‟s immune response. LTA had a similar effect when added to the skin of mice (Nature Medicine, DOI: 10.1038/nm.2062). Gallo says that although inflammation is essential for recovery from injury, the ability to damp it down is key because prolonged inflammation can lead to skin disease like psoriasis. The team also notes that LTA‟s protective role seems limited to the skins surface. In immune cells taken from deeper layers, it provoked inflammation. In the gut, friendly bacteria control inflammation, while in the mouth they may kill strains that cause decay and halitosis. NOT TOO OLD TO GROW: Earth‟s oldest trees are experiencing a growth spurt. A tree ring study suggests the Great Basin bristlecone pines of the western US have grown faster in the past 50 years than they have in 3.7 millennia because of rising temperatures (Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, DOI: 10.1073/pnas.0903029106). RECENT EVOLUTION SAVED CANNIBALS: It‟s a snapshot of human evolution in progress. A genetic mutation protecting against Kuru, a brain disease passed on by eating human brains-only emerged and spread in the past 200 years. When members of the Fore people in Papua New Guinea died, others would eat the dead person‟s brain during funeral rituals. Kuru passed on in this way killed at least 2500 Fore in the 20th century until the cause was identified in the 1950s and the practice ended. The example of Kuru helped to show how BSE-mad cow disease-spread through the feeding of infected cattle brains to other animals, and how this led to variant Creutzfeidt-jakob disease (vCJD). Simon Mead of University College London says the “anti-Kuru” gene is the most clear-cut evidence yet of human evolution in action. The mutation was discovered after comparing DNA from 152 Fore who had succumbed to the disease with DNA from more than 3000 living Fore, including almost 560 who ate brains (New England Journal of Medicine, vol 361, p 2056). A hitherto-unknown variant of the gene which

makes rogue prions, the proteins that spread the disease, was found in 51 survivors and their descendants. The variant seems to provide almost complete resistance to the disease. BANGLADESHIS POISONED BY PITS OF POISON: One of the world‟s great poisoning mysteries may have been solved, the source of the arsenic that turns up in lethal quantities in hundreds of thousands of wells across Bangladesh. The answer is ponds. Bangladesh occupies the flood-prone delta of the Ganges. In the past half-century, villagers have had to dig pits for soil to raise their homes above the floods. Water-filled pits cover roughly a tenth of the delta, and appear to be poisoning the wells Bangladeshis sink for drinking water. Organic carbon in silt and sewage settles on the bottom of the stagnant ponds and percolates underground, where it is eaten by microbes. This microbial oxidation releases arsenic already in the delta silt, it washed down from the Himalayas over thousands of years. The arsenic dissolved in the groundwater is tapped by village wells. After seven years spent plotting the chemistry and underground flow of water beneath the villages near Dhaka, Rebecca Neumann of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and colleagues cracked the problem, she found that oxidation only occurs beneath the stagnant ponds. In contrast, oxygen-rich rice paddies trap the arsenic in soils at the surface (Nature Geoscience, DOI: 10.1038/NGE0685). As long as Bangladeshis drank surface water they were safe. In the late 1970s the country switched to groundwater and since then Neumann estimates arsenic has poisoned 2 million Bangladeshis. Luckily for rice eaters, arsenic in the paddy fields is usually flushed away during the monsoon season. Neumann‟s analysis reveals that most of the arsenic in well water today seeped underground from ponds dug about 50 years ago. Though pits are still being dug today, which could exacerbate poisoning in the future, to play it safe new water wells should be sunk away from old wells. …NOR TOO BIG: Something else has got bigger in recent years: Russia‟s landmass. Geologists say an earthquake on Sakhalin island in 2007 and a volcanic eruption on Matua island in 2009 increased the nation‟s size by 4.5 square kilometres. The earthquake lifted part of the sea floor into dry land. 40 NUMBER OF YEARS that have passed since the first message was sent over ARPANET, which eventually became the internet. That message was sent by a University of California team in Los Angeles in October 1969. 30 to 64 average number of times women cry each year, compared to 6 to 17 times for men, according to the German Society of Ophthalmology. The study found that women cry in difficult situations or when feeling inadequate, while men cry when empathising or at the break-up of a relationship.

More than 840 emergency service volunteer groups will benefit from a new $750,000 Lotterywest grants scheme.

Volunteer Emergency Service units (VES), State Emergency Services (SES) units, Bush Fire brigades, Volunteer Fire Service brigades and Volunteer Fire and Rescue Service stations have begun applying for grants for items that support emergency services operations.

Lotterywest Program Manager Alan Moore said they were pleased to offer the grants to help boost emergency services during what is expected to be a particularly busy bushfire and summer season, when extra resources will be of great use.

―Currently volunteers receive funding for essential items and services under the Emergency Services Levy,‖ Mr Moore said. ―These grants aid volunteers in other areas such as training, new equipment, building improvements and water storage for firefighting purposes.‖

Tambellup Volunteer Emergency Service Unit has received a grant towards the purchase of a trailer-mounted pump that will enable more efficient refilling of the community fire appliance.

FESA Regional Director Great Southern Grant Olsen

said the new equipment will greatly assist the unit during their busiest time of year.

―A tough bushfire season is expected, due to spring rains and a wet winter providing higher fuel loads,‖ Mr Olsen said. ―With the risk of bushfires imminent property owners need to take responsibility for their survival by preparing their property and developing a bushfire survival plan.‖

Meanwhile Pingelly volunteer State Emergency Service Unit has received a grant towards two GPS (Global Positioning System) devices. ―These GPS devices will help SES volunteers during land searches, callouts in emergencies, training and supporting community events,‖ said Mr Olsen.

The warmer weather over the week-end turned most of us away to a cooler place. Friday night saw a couple of sets played in ideal conditions. This week-end we have the Christmas Tree on Saturday night. Father Christmas will be arriving at 6pm so please be there before this so your kids big & small don't miss his arrival. We will be having the traditional finger food tea. Please bring a savoury plate - of food- & a sweet plate to share. The Hamper Raffle will also be drawn so please bring your donations to go

Pat has asked me to remind you all that we are asking for a $25 donation to go towards trophies for the Junior Tournament. He will be available on Saturday. The shade sail is going to be ready to be put up before the tournament, so will need a couple of volunteer's to put this up.

The first half of the season has come to a close very quickly. We have been very lucky with the weather this year and the sessions on Monday and Wednesdays have been well attended. We seem to gain new members every week, which is fantastic, with club numbers being at 41.

Each club member wants to get something different from the swimming club. For some it‘s improving their strokes or just getting fit. For others its working towards better times so they can compete to the best of their ability. Even though the swimming club will take a break over the holidays, swimmers are encouraged to get in the water and ‗train‘ whenever and wherever possible. Everyone involved with the Lakers wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Enjoy your summer break and we will see you poolside in 2010.

Dumbleyung Meet Several swimmers and their parents travelled to Dumbleyung on the 5

th December for a meet run by the

Katanning Swimmers Club. There were many successes the day and the swimmers handled the challenge of the turns in the 25m pool well. Well done to Jack and Walker who won their events in their first ever swimming meet.

Between all the swimmers a swag of gold, silver and bronze medals were won across a variety of events. Peter also had the added excitement of winning the ‗dash for cash‘ earning him a $100.00. The Taylors didn‘t go away empty handed either winning the hamper that was raffled. Congratulations to Carrie, Imogen, Peter, Jack, Megan, Bianca, Walker and Angus for your participation.

Humour Italian Food The customer in the Italian restaurant was so pleased that he asked to speak to the chef. The owner proudly led him into the kitchen and introduced him to the chef. "Your veal parmigiana was superb," the customer said. "I just spent a month in Italy, and yours is better than any I ever had over there." "Naturally," the chef said. "Over there, they use domestic cheese. Ours is imported." Repairs When a guy's ink on his printer began to grow faint, he called a local repair shop where a friendly man informed him that the printer probably needed only to be cleaned. Because the store charged $50 for such cleanings, he told him he might be better off reading the printer's manual and trying the job himself. Pleasantly surprised by his candor, he asked, "Does your boss know that you discourage business?" "Actually, it's my boss's idea," the employee replied sheepishly. "We usually make more money on repairs if we let people try to fix things themselves first." Acts A woman went into her kitchen to find a burglar loaded down with a bunch of stuff he was stealing from her kitchen. Not having any kind of weapon to scare him off,

she raised her hand and said "Acts 2:38," and proceeded to quote scripture. The burglar froze in place and didn't move. The woman called 911; the police arrived and were amazed to find the burglar still frozen where he stood. "What did you say to him that kept him from moving?" they asked the woman. She told them that she had simply said Acts 2:38 and quoted scripture. The police chuckled and escorted the burglar out to the patrol car. "Why did the woman's quoting scripture scare you so much?" they asked. "Scripture?" said the burglar, "I thought she said she had an axe and two 38's! Cats A tom cat and a tabby cat were courting on a back fence at night. The tom leaned over to the tabby with pent up passion and purred... "I'll die for you!" The tabby gazed at him from under lowered eye lids and asked, "How many times?"

The Western Australian Department of Agriculture and Food has produced six National Animal Pest Alerts to assist in raising public awareness about the potential risk of new invasive species establishing populations in Australia and becoming pests. The pest alerts, covering the Indian Ringneck, House Crow, Common Myna, Red-eared Slider, Ferret and Rusa Deer have been produced with support from the Australian Government and endorsed nationally by the Vertebrate Pests Committee and relevant state and territory authorities. The brochures have been designed to educate the public about the risks these emerging pests pose to agriculture, the environment and social values to increase community awareness and encourage vigilance. This is because there is a great reliance on the public to report pest species. The brochures have been produced using results from risk assessments conducted by the department, and include background information, description, behaviour and the potential impact of the pests. Information and pictures showing these species in the wild in Australia have also been included in the brochures. These include a House Crow found at a

caravan park in Port Hedland, Western Australia, and a group of Indian Ringneck Parakeets trapped in a Perth suburb and re-homed. Importantly, the pest alerts also distinguish these non-native species from similar-looking native birds and animals. As many reports turn out to be native species, it is hoped that this will focus reporting to the problem species. The brochures use results from risk assessments conducted by the Department of Agriculture and Food in Western Australia and all the featured species pose significant risks of establishment in the wild here and could damage agriculture, the environment and public amenities. Any sightings of unusual animals and birds can be reported to the department‘s Pest and Disease Information Service on Freecall 1800 084 881, email [email protected] or visit the website www.agric.wa.gov.au or by calling the Wildcare Helpline on (08) 9474 9055. Basketball NOtes After more than a decade in mothballs, basketball has now reinstated itself in the Lake Grace sporting calendar. Senior sides from Lake Grace have been competing in the Newdegate competition and high school teams have travelled to Kulin on a weekly basis to take part in their association, but with the completion of the new courts in Lake Grace as part of Stage 1 of the sporting precinct upgrade there was a resurgence of interest in the game being played locally.

Lake Grace now fields 16 teams, four in each division; men‘s, women‘s, U 15 and U 13. With the close of the school year approaching and basketball set to take a break over the festive and school holiday period, a Grand Final was scheduled for the U 15 teams. As most children when they finish year 10 choose to go away to school, it was deemed fairer to hold a Grand

Final with the original team rather than wait until the end of the season in the following year. On Tuesday 8th night basketball completed the first half of the 09/10 season. A final was held in the Under 15 group, between the Wolves and the Redbacks. The game was close with both teams defending well and playing a strong inside game. During the course of the game it was a draw at least 3 times! The Redbacks we‘re the eventual winners though to a score of 20 to 16.

Thank you to everyone and I hope that whoever has been involved with the basketball so far has enjoyed it and is keen to come back next year on the 2

nd of Feb

2010.
