The process of assessing market support at a particular location is greatly enabled by GIS, Global Information Systems.

They can be used to assess the presence of both competition and demand.

Many GIS databases are accessible only by subscription. Google Earth, a free resource, was used in this demonstration.

If the market is already saturated, either the project will need to be designed to work with a different market segment, or it may have to be terminated.

It also makes sense to assess whether transportation networks and other amenities and infrastructural supports are in place to serve the proposed project.

But more on these later.

In addition, the impact of the project on the location should be assessed. Reduced demand is not usually a problem, but increased demand can be.• Will the increased number of cars driven by

customers dropping off and picking up dogs cause congestion?

• Will the amount of water used for all that grooming overwhelm the existing sewer lines?

• Will better cared-for dogs be calmer, reducing the need for police or animal control services?
