Configuration Files “Rules” - Important

» Configuration File Precedence– Aastra IP phones can accept two sources of configuration data:

1. aastra.cfg/<mac>.cfg from a Configuration server

2. Phone User Interface (UI) or Web UI changes

– Configuration changes hierarchy: Web UI or Phone UI – first priority (override all others) Configuration files – second level priority Factory default options – third level priority

– Hierarchy changes will override lower priority levels For example:

– Configuration file sets a button to be Call Forwarding

– Change is made using Web UI to change CF to DND

– DND can not be changed by the config file method; WebUI is higher priority

Setting up the Phone – Configuration Files

» 3. Configuration Files – A system administrator can enter specific parameters in the configuration files to configure the IP phones. All parameters in configuration files can only be set by an administrator

» The phones use two (2) text files. An administrator is able to enter specific configuration parameters in either of the files

– “aastra.cfg”

– “<MAC>.cfg”

Setting up the Phone – Configuration Files

• The IP phones can be configured to use either TFTP, FTP, HTTP, or HTTPS to download its configuration files. The phones will download two (2) configuration files.• aastra.cfg:

• Holds the configuration information common to all the Aastra IP phones on the network

• E.g. SIP Proxy, Registrar, Outbound Proxy, XML server IP, Time servers

• <MAC>.cfg: (where <MAC> is equal to the MAC address of each telephone). • Contains specific configuration parameters for that particular telephone.• E.g. Line configuration, Button mapping• If the same parameter is listed in the <MAC>.cfg as in the aastra.cfg file, the

<MAC>.cfg value OVERRIDES it

• Create/edit config files using text editor (Word Pad, Note Pad); save as plain text.

– Syntax and sample configurations can be found in the “IP Phone Administrator Guide”; Syntax in Appendix A and sample configurations in Appendix D

• Note: The aastra.cfg file must be present on the server or the IP phone will skip the rest of the download

DHCP and Option 66

• Aastra’s “factory default” has DHCP enabled• IP, Mask, Gateway, DNS provided via DHCP server

• Optional DHCP option 66 • When DHCP option 66 is used, the phone will accept the TFTP

server information from the DHCP server• Allows “no touch” configuration at DHCP server of the phone.• DHCP option 66 is available on Microsoft Windows, Linux and

Solaris platforms and high-end routers (e.g., Foundry Networks)• Aastra now supports Option 60 and Option 43

Security on Aastra

• Aastra IP phones support two (2) password access levels– “User” level – Viewing and configuring phone specific settings such as

languages, time and date, ringtones, programmable keys, XML, etc.– “Admin” level – Full configuration access for phone specific settings

as well as advanced network and SIP settings– NOTE: User level access can further be restricted by enabling Admin

password at the Options root menu item and by disabling the WebUI– NOTE: Admin level password can only be changed using config files

• Aastra can be configured to download only encrypted files and each phone will decrypt the file on the phone itself– Useful for protecting private info such as SIP user account– Encryption program for Windows, Unix (Solaris), and Linux platforms

freely available from Aastra – Industry standard MD5 one-way encryption/hash– A centralized encryption password is chosen by the admin for the files

Factory Default

» There are 2 options for removing configuration settings on a phone. You can set the phone back to its factory default settings or you can remove a phone’s local configuration. Both can be done using the IP Phone UI or the Aastra Web UI ONLY.

» The Factory Default option resets the phone back to factory specs. It removes all of the settings made using aastra.cfg, <mac>.cfg, config files and all settings made through the Phone UI and WEB UI.

» The Remove Configuration Settings option will remove ALL user-modified settings made through the Phone UI and WEB UI. The aastra.cfg, <mac>.cfg configuration file settings are kept and untouched.
