PowerHA Basic Concepts (for IBM i clients)

The underlying data resiliency is not based on replication it is based on a pool of disk which is shared and switchable between nodes in the cluster

PowerHA SystemMirror enables the cluster nodes to behave as resource for the applications in the event of an outage

Admin Domain takes care of the sysbas data…(fyi…no you do not use a software replication product to replicate the Admin Domain data)

Application data

PowerHA Basic Concepts

Internal disk is not switchable (LUNs required), you use geomirror with internal disk configurations (or for that matter any disk configurations)

Geomirror for configs with IASPs under 2 Tbytes (suggested guideline)

Discussion IBM i Environments

There are two primary points you are driving:

1. Simplicity– PowerHA is largely a “hands-off” automated solution– PowerHA SystemMirror is NOT related to software replication– IBM i clients are largely unaware of clustering concepts– Their frame of reference is journal based software replication – Big animal pictures required, go slow and insure that they understand you– FlashCopy is a huge factor for deploying IBM storage – eliminates save window

2. Cost– Software replication products can be expensive and complex to use– Most environments require additional/specialized staffing– Clients believe that the SWMA is too expensive and many are paying a third party an fee to

manage their software replication environment– Few clients conduct failover operations with software replication products
