, : Sanskrit printing with Devanagari types has not such a long tradition as have Latin or Arabic books, but that does not

means there are less mysteries to be solved. What was in mid-XIX called the usual font by K.A. Kossowich and used by O. Bhtlingk was once lost. Once in a long time we have reviewed the history of the devanagari script in Europe in general and W. Schlegel's type in specific. In compilation of the article original sources were attracted: mail correspond-ence, archive and museum materials, unpublished and rare works from Germany, France, United Kingdom and India.

In government typographies of Russian Empire in St. Petersbourg, Kazan and Kharkov the French type, known as the old one, was much more widespread than the German type, known in Europe as the new one. Based on its popu-larity W. Schlegels French font was called ordinary in XIX century Russian Empire by several eminent indologists.
