The festival of art and culture sommer.frische.kunst. will draw visitors in summer 2016 from around the world to Bad Gastein for the sev-enth time. Bad Gastein has always been a place of high culture and a magnet for artists and art aficionados. Franz Schubert, Arthur Schopen-hauer, Thomas Mann and Gustav Klimt – they all opened themselves to the inspiration of Bad Gastein in summertime. This unique tradition, deeply rooted in the history of the town, is something we wish to continue to nurture; which is why art and culture are such important pillars in our tourism activities. Bad Gastein is also a place undergoing trans-formation. Change draws creative spirits.

Das Kunst- und Kulturfestival sommer. frische.kunst. lockt im Sommer 2016 bereits im siebten Jahr Besucher aus aller Welt nach Bad Gastein. Bad Gastein war immer schon ein Ort der Hochkultur und ein Anziehungs-punkt für Künstler und Kulturinteressierte. Franz Schubert, Arthur Schopenhauer, Tho-mas Mann und Gustav Klimt – sie alle ließen sich vom Sommer in Bad Gastein inspirieren. Diese einmalige, in der Geschichte des Ortes verwurzelte Tradition möchten wir gerne weiterpflegen und deshalb sind Kunst und Kultur wichtige Säulen im Rahmen unserer touristischen Aktivitäten. Die kunstresidenz in Bad Gastein ist ein einzigartiges Projekt zeitgenössischer Kunst, das jungen Künstlern in Form eines »Artists -in-Residence«-Stipendiums Raum zur Ent-faltung bietet. Die Wirkung des Ortes auf die einzelnen Künstler spiegelt sich in der Andersartigkeit ihrer Arbeiten wider und zeigt doch Gemeinsamkeiten im ortsbezogenen Kontext. Das Ergebnis steht für das Kaleidos- kop zeitgenössischer Kunst – von Performance, Bildhauerei, Fotografie, Malerei, Zeichnung bis zu Collage und Installationen. Die Werke stehen für das Erlebte vor Ort. Eine Synthese aus subjektiven Erfahrungen und lokalen Eigenheiten, ein künstlerischer Diskurs über das Leben in – vielleicht sogar zwischen – zwei Welten: einer urbanen und einer periphe-ren – einer zeitgenössischen und einer fast historischen.

The kunstresidenz in Bad Gastein is a unique project focused on contemporary art, allowing young artists to give free rein to their creative talents with the support of the »Artists in Residence« grant. The effect of this location on the individual artists is reflected in the differentness each of their works, but also in the communality of this shared context. The result embodies the breadth of contem-porary art – from performance, sculpture, photography, painting and sketching, to collage and installations. The works represent subjective experiences in an unmatched set-ting. A synthesis of personal experiences and the peculiarities of the area itself, an artistic discourse about life in – and even perhaps between – two worlds: one urbane and one peripheral – one contemporary and one al-most historical.

Mit der kunstresidenz möchte Bad Gastein der Künstlerseele Raum für Inspiration und Kraft für intensives Schaffen geben. Während des Sommers arbeiten Künstler aus dem In- und Ausland im historischen Wasserkraft-werk von Bad Gastein. Das internationale Stipendiatenprogramm bietet aufstrebenden, jungen Künstlerinnen und Künstlern Freiräume für ihr kreatives Wirken durch kostenfreies Wohnen in den kooperierenden Hotels und Atelierräumen im Kraftwerk. Kunstinteres-sierte und Bad Gasteiner Gäste können hautnah am Schaffensprozess der jungen Künstler teilhaben und die Künstler in ihren Ateliers im alten Kraftwerk besuchen.

With its kunstresidenz (artist-in-residence) Bad Gastein aims to provide the artistic soul with scope for inspiration and strength for intense creativity. During the summer artists work in Bad Gastein’s historic hydroelectric power plant. The international scholarship program offers aspiring young artists scope for the development of their creative talent by providing free accommodation at participa- ting hotels and workshops at the former power plant. Art fans and guests of Bad Gastein can enjoy an up-close experience of the young artists’ creative process. The studios at the power plant are regularly open to visitors.

Margriet van Weenen, *1983, studierte Fotografie und Malerei in ihrer Heimatstadt, Groningen, in den Niederlanden. Für ihre Installationen sammelt und überarbeitet die Künstlerin im Rahmen eines Themas verschiedenste Materi-alien, Objekte und Fotografien. Eine zentrale Rolle spielen hierbei geschichtlicher Kontext sowie die äußere Erscheinung. Durch die be- wusste Platzierung der Gegenstände gelingt es ihr, die Gegenstände in einen gemeinsamen Zusammenhang zu bringen und eine fiktive Geschichte zu erzählen. Deshalb zeigen sich in ihren Arbeiten deutliche Parallelen zum Aus-stellungscharakter historischer und archäolo-gischer Museen.

Love Lundell, *1981, studierte an der Trond-heim Academy of Fine Art. Heute lebt und arbeitet der Maler in Stockholm. In seinen Arbeiten verwandelt Love Lundell persönliche Eindrücke aus Büchern, Träumen und seiner Kindheit in collagierte, mystische Welten mit hohem Wiedererkennungswert. Die surrealis-tische Atmosphäre, inszeniert durch ineinan-der verschmelzende Szenarien, wird durch eine für Lundell charakteristische Knitteroptik verstärkt. Als Material hierfür verwendet er hauptsächlich Acryl, Öl und Schellack in einer weitestgehend gedeckten Farbpalette.

Linda Bäckström, *1982, stammt aus Bomhus in Schweden und hat Kunst und Textil studiert. Heute lebt und arbeitet sie in Stockholm. Die Skulpturen von Linda Bäckström weisen eine deutliche Divergenz zwischen Material- und Motivcharakter auf. Die weiche, organische Optik des Sprühschaums als Grundbestandteil steht im Kontrast zur Symbolik der dargestell-ten Objekte. Mit Hilfe handgenähter Guß- formen fertigt die Künstlerin unter anderem Tierköpfe, Waffen und Knochengerüste. Nüch-terne Themen lässt sie in einem satirischen Kontext erscheinen.

The sculptures by Linda Bäckström display a distinct divergence between the character of the material and the motif. With the help of handsewn textile molds, the artist crafts animal heads, weapons, and skeletons. She allows sober themes to appear in a satirical context.

Alexandra Baumgartner, *1973, studierte zunächst am Mozarteum in ihrer Heimatstadt Salzburg und anschließend am Fotografie Kolleg und an der Universität für angewandte Kunst in Wien. In Wien und in Berlin lebt und arbeitet sie auch heute. Ihr Interesse gilt ins-besondere den psychischen und moralischen Abgründen, als auch dem physischen Verfall des Menschen. Nach analytischen Ausein-andersetzungen stellt sie in ihren Arbeiten Themen wie Vergänglichkeit, Kontrollverlust und Abhängigkeiten in den Fokus. Durch die Kombination und Veränderung gefundener, anonymer Alltagsgegenstände aus den 1930er bis 1970er Jahre entstehen spannende Wand- und/oder Rauminstallationen.

Nach seinem Studium an der HGB Leipzig, wurde der aus Wolfen in Deutschland stam-mende Ondrej Drescher, *1977, im Jahr 2008 Meisterschüler von Neo Rauch. Heute lebt und arbeitet der Künstler in Berlin. Charakte-ristisch für Dreschers Gemälde sind insbe-sondere die ungewöhnlichen Arrangements der symbolstarken Bildgegenstände. Mit Hilfe dieser Elemente gelingt es ihm auf originelle Weise, zahlreiche seiner Sujets verschlüsselt zu präsentieren. In seiner experimentellen Arbeitsweise kombiniert er unterschiedliche Materialien, sowie Aquarell, Tusche, Kohle, Ölpastel, Farb- und Bleistifte.

Simon Mathers, *1984, absolvierte zunächst seinen Bachelor in Kunst am Goldsmiths College und anschließend seinen Master in Malerei am Royal College of Art in London. Der Brite lebt und arbeitet auch heute noch in seiner Heimatstadt London. Seine Arbei-ten zeichnen sich durch eine ungezwungene, ausdrucksvolle und humoristische Heran-gehensweise aus und nehmen in Gestalt von Zeichnungen, Gemälden, Druckgrafiken und Skulpturen Form an. Gesammelte Eindrücke aus Bildern und Texten unterschiedlicher Medien sowie persönlichen Fotografien über-setzt er so in spannende, materielle Rätsel.

Wer diesen Kurs besuchen will sollte festes Schuhwerk, Sinn für das Experiment und Liebe zur Natur mitbringen: Es geht hoch hinaus, denn die Poserhöhe Alm, zu der die Kursteilnehmer wandern, liegt auf 1.500 Höhenmetern. Die Gruppe erkundet innerhalb von drei Tagen die Gegend rund um die Alm und sucht Inspiration in der Natur. Beglei-tet wird sie von der Berliner Malerin Katrin Kampmann, die 2011 in den Zillertaler Alpen das Kunstprojekt »Die Wanderausstellung« verwirklicht hat. Die Künstlerin ist über den Berliner Höhenweg gewandert, um auf jeder der Berghütten einer Tagesetappe kleinfor-matige Malereien zu präsentieren, die von Kampmann bereits vorher mit Bezug auf die Bergwelt gemalt worden waren. So traf zeitgenössische Malerei auf Hütteninterieur und bot die Möglichkeit in einer Fotoreihe dieses Aufeinandertreffen einzufangen. Nach sieben Tagen fand die Tour ihren Abschluss in einer Vernissage auf der Berliner Hütte. In Anlehnung an »Die Wanderausstellung« soll auch am Ende dieses Kurses eine Auswahl der entstandenen Werke auf der Poserhöhe Alm ausgestellt werden.

If you would like to participate in this course, you should come equipped with sturdy shoes, a willingness to experiment, and a love of nature: you will be heading up to new heights, because the Poserhöhe Alm, to which the course participants will hike, is located atan elevation of 1,500 m. Within 3 days, the group will explore the area around the hut and search for inspiration in nature. You will be accompanied by Berlin painter Katrin Kampmann, who in 2011 began her project »Die Wanderausstellung« in the Zillertal Alps. The artist hiked along the Berliner Höhenweg (Berlin High Trail) to mountain huts in order to present small format paintings, which had already been painted and relate to her im-pressions of the alpine world. Her photo series also created the opportunity to capture the clash that occurs when contemporary paint-ing encounters classic, rustic mountain hut interiors. After 7 days, the tours ended with a vernissage at the Berliner Hütte. In the style of »Die Wanderausstellung«, a selection of works that have been created will be displayed at the Poserhöhe Alm at the end of the course.

Zwischen Naturgewalten, mystischen Ruinen und fes-selnden Gipfeln wird Dein Drehbuch zum Film. Und obendrauf bekommst Du das Wissen der Filmregisseurin und Drehbuchautorin Franzis-ka Stünkel. Sie vermittelt die Grundlagen des Drehbuschreibens und der Filmregie. Und dann beginnt die wilde Reise. Jeder Teil-nehmer wird sein eigenes Drehbuch schreiben und einen Kurzfilm drehen. Und damit es spannend bleibt, drehen wir in einer Ein-stellung und vertikal. Denn die Premiere auf großer Leinwand garantierten wir Dir auch noch: In Bad Gastein findet 2016 die »Erste Vertikale« statt, ein Filmfestival für vertikal gedrehte Filme. Bereit für Deinen Dreh?

Franziska Stünkel ist eine international be-achtete Filmregisseurin, Drehbuchautorin und Fotokünstlerin. Ihre Filme liefen in 19 Ländern auf über 100 internationalen Filmfestivals und wurden mehrfach ausgezeichnet, unter anderem mit dem »Best New Director Award« in New York. Sie erhielt mehrere Stipendien. Ihre Fotografien werden bundesweit in Muse-en, Kunstvereinen und Galerien gezeigt. Der Workshop ist geeignet für Teilnehmer ohne und mit Vorkenntnissen.

You are shooting your own film. Your Smart-phone is your camera. Your imagination is your script, and Bad Gastein will provide you with a breathtaking filming location. Among the forces of nature, mystical ruins, and captivating mountain peaks, your script will become a film. In addition to all of this, you can learn from film director and scriptwriter Franziska Stünkel. She will teach you the ba-sics of screenwriting and film directing. Then the wild journey can begin. Each participant will write their own script and shoot their own short film. So that there is no shortage of excitement, you will shoot the film in a single shot and vertically. The premier will take place on a large screen, and there is one more thing: in 2016, the »Erste Vertikale« (First Vertical) will take place in Bad Gastein. This is a film festival for vertical cinematogra- phy. Are you ready to start filming?

Franziska Stünkel is an internationally acclaimed film director, scriptwriter, and photographer. Her films have been shown in 19 countries and at over 100 international film festivals and have received many awards including »Best New Director Award« in New York. She has received several grants. Deep below the historic centre of Bad Ga- stein lie the thermal springs that have made the town so famous. The springs all originate between 1,034 and 937 metres above sea level and together supply almost five million litres of thermal water each day. Several artists present their work at Quellpark.

Das Werk des österreichischen Künstlers Gerwald Rockenschaub, geboren 1952 in Linz, wird seit den frühen 1980er-Jahren stets mit dem Begriff des Neo-Geo verbunden. Neo-Geo durchdrang die Ästhetik der amerikani-schen Minimal Art mit der konsumistischen Haltung der Pop-Art. Tatsächlich entzieht sich Rockenschaubs Werk jedoch einer simplen sti-listischen Einordnung. Gerwald Rockenschaub bezieht sich in seinen Animationen, Skulp-turen, Wandobjekten und raumspezifischen Installationen gleichermaßen auf Ideen und Positionen der Moderne wie auf Phänomene der Alltagskultur. Diese werden in einem Akt der radikalen Reduktion und Konzentration

– der beiden Basisprinzipien der künstleri-schen Arbeitsweise Rockenschaubs – auf ihre wesentlichen Elemente komprimiert. Gerwald Rockenschaub lebt und arbeitet in Berlin.

The work of Austrian artist Gerwald Rock-enschaub, born in 1952 in Linz, has been associated with the concept of Neo-Geo since the early 1980s. Neo-Geo permeated the aesthetic of American minimal art with the consumerist approach to Pop Art. His art cannot be simply categorized in any particular style. In his animations, sculptures, wall ob-jects, and site-related installations, Gerwald Rockenschaub refers to ideas and positions of modernism as well as phenomena of everyday culture. In an act of radical reduction and concentration (the two basic principles of the artist’s method), these are scaled down to bare essentials. Gerwald Rockenschaub lives and works in Berlin.

Jeep Hein, * 1974, ist ein dänischer Künstler, der in Berlin und Kopenhagen lebt und arbeitet. Er studierte an der Royal Danish Academy of Art zwischen 1997 und 2003 und an der Städelschule in Frankfurt zwischen 1999 und 2000. Jeppe Hein ist weithin bekannt für seine experimentellen und interaktiven Werke, die an der Schnittstelle von Kunst und Architektur positioniert sind. Einzigartig in ihrer formalen Einfachheit und meistens humorvoll geprägt, schaffen seine Werke einen lebendigen Dialog mit den Traditionen der minimalistischen Skulptur und Konzeptkunst der 1970er Jahre. Jeppe Heins Arbeiten bergen oftmals Überra-schungen und weisen den Betrachtern einen Platz im Zentrum des Geschehens zu.

Seit einigen Jahren arbeitet der Künstler an der Gestaltung und Modifikation von Bänken. Dabei analysiert und modifiziert er ihre ar-chitektonische und soziale Funktion. Auf der einen Seite bieten Bänke eine ausgezeichnete Gelegenheit für Kommunikation und sozia-len Austausch. Auf der anderen Seite bieten sie Momente der Ruhe. Ihr Design hat einen Einfluss auf das Verhalten der Menschen in der Öffentlichkeit. Sie können ermutigen, Platz zu nehmen und andere auffordern, sich zu setzen oder auch das Gegenteil bewirken.

Jeep Hein, born 1974, is a Danish artist based in Berlin and Copenhagen. Jeppe Hein is widely known for his production of experiential and interactive artworks that can be positioned at the junction where art, architecture, and technical inventions intersect. Unique in their formal simplicity and notable for their frequent use of humor, his works engage in a lively dialogue with the traditions of Minimal-ist sculpture and Conceptual art of the 1970s. Jeppe Hein’s works often feature surprising and captivating elements which place specta-tors at the centre of events.

Since a couple of years the artist is interested in the design of benches, trying to analyseand modify their architectural and social function. On the one hand benches provide an excellent opportunity for communication and social exchange. On the other hand they offer moments of respite. Thus their design has an influence on people’s behaviour in public, by giving them the opportunity to place themselves in order to discourage or encourage others to take a seat next to them.

L A R S L A N G E M E I E R Für das Fotografieprojekt sind Fotodesigner Lars Langemeier und Teppichdesigner Jan Kath bis nach Bangkok gereist. Neben großformatigen urbanen Bildern wurden auch die Teppiche im städtischen Kontext aufwändig inszeniert und aus der Vogel- perspektive fotografiert.Lars Langemeier bringt seine Kunst in die Werbung. Seine Fotografien für die Jan Kath Kollektion »Erased Heritage« haben 2014 nicht nur einen »silbernen Nagel« beim ADC-Award in der Kategorie Fotografie/Werbung erhalten, sondern sind im BFF Magazin No.3 zweifach mit Gold ausgezeichnet worden. Zuletzt hat beim GoSee-Award eine handver-lesene Jury aus Mode, Art-Buying, Redakti-on und Kunst die Finalisten gewählt. In der Kategorie »Architecture/Interior« holte Lars Langemeier wieder einmal Gold für seine Fotostrecke. Der Fotograf wird repräsentiert von Anette Blase, Agentur für Fotografen, Berlin. Jan Kath gehört zu den erfolgreichsten Tep-pichdesignern der Welt. Er bricht gezielt mit Sehgewohnheiten und wirft strenge Gestal-tungsregeln über Bord. Ohne Berührungs-ängste kombiniert der Bochumer klassische Elemente des Orientteppichs mit zeitgenös-sischem, minimalistischem Design. L A R S L A N G E M E I E R For their photography project, photo designer Lars Langemeier and carpet designer Jan Kath traveled to Bangkok. Along with large-format, urban photos, carpets were also elaborately staged in an urban context and photographed from a bird’s-eye perspective.Lars Langemeier also uses his art for ad- vertising. His photographs for the Jan Kath collection »Erased Heritage« received not only a »silver nail« for the ADC Award in the photography/advertisement category in 2014 but were also awarded gold twice in the BFF Magazin No.3. Most recently, a hand-picked jury from the areas of fashion, art buying, editing, and art selected finalists for the GoSee-Award. In the architecture/interior category, Lars Langemeier once again re-ceived gold for his photo series. The photogra-pher is represented by Anette Blase, agency for photographers in Berlin. Jan Kath is one of the most successful carpet designers in the world. He consciously breaks with customary ways of seeing and throws strict rules overboard. Guided by a bold approach to his work, Kath, from Bochum, Germany, combines the classical elements of Oriental carpets with contemporary, mini-malist design. His designs have received many awards, and his works will continue to be fea-tured in a museum context of art and design.

Katrin Kampmann wurde 1979 in Bonn geboren, sie lebt und arbeitet seit 2000 in Berlin. Von 2001 bis 2006 studierte sie hier an der Universität der Künste (UdK) Malerei bei Prof. K.H. Hödicke, und wurde nach ihrem Meisterschüler-Abschluss im Jahr 2006 als Gewinnerin des Meisterschülerpreises geehrt. Seither wurden ihre Arbeiten in zahlreichen Einzelausstellungen gezeigt, unter anderem in Mailand, Seoul, Ludwigsburg, München, Wien, Wiesbaden und Los Angeles. Katrin Kampmann liebt die Berge. In ihrem temporären Atelier an der Kaiserpromenade wird sie Arbeiten präsentieren, die im Rahmen einer Wanderausstellung über den Berliner Höhenweg entstanden und in unterschiedli-chen Berghütten präsentiert worden sind. Für ihre Zeit in Bad Gastein plant sie eine künstle-rische Auseinandersetzung mit berühmten Bad Gasteiner Gästen wie Stefan Zweig, Thomas Mann und Sigmund Freud im Rahmen einer Porträtserie.

Katrin Kampmann was born in Bonn in 1979 and has lived and worked in Berlin since 2000. From 2001 to 2006, she studied painting at the Berlin University of the Arts (UdK) with Professor K.H. Hödicke and after completing her master class in 2006 was awarded with the »Meisterschülerpreis« by the president of UdK. Since then, her works have been displayed in numerous solo exhibitions including those in Milan, Seoul, Ludwigsburg, Munich, Vienna, Wiesbaden, and Los Angeles. Katrin Kampmann loves the mountains. In her temporary atelier on the Kaiser Promenade, she will present works that have been created as part of a hiking exhibit about the Berliner Höhenweg (Berlin High Trail) and that have been presented in a variety of mountain huts. For her time in Bad Gastein, she is planning on an artistic examination of famous Bad Gastein guests such as Stefan Zweig, Thomas Mann, and Sigmund Freud within the scope of her portrait series.

Jorinde Voigt, *1977, lebt und arbeitet in Berlin, wo sie 2004 an der Universität der Künste als Meisterschülerin bei Katharina Sieverding ihren Abschluss machte. 2014 wurde sie zur Professorin für konzeptuelle Zeichnung und Malerei an der Akademie der Bildenden Künste München ernannt. 2012 erhielt Jorinde Voigt den Daniel & Florence Guerlain Contemporary Drawing Preis. Ihre Arbeiten sind in bedeutenden Sammlungen vertreten wie jenen des Museum of Modern Art, New York; Art Institute of Chicago, IL USA; Centre Pompidou, Paris; der Staatlichen Graphischen Sammlung, München; des Kupferstichkabinett, Berlin.Ordnung und Zufall, Akribie und Impulsivität, zeichnerischer Exzess und grafische Reduk-tion sind nur einige Pole jener vibrierenden Spannungsverhältnisse, die den Charakter der komplexen, großformatigen Zeichnungen der deutschen Künstlerin bestimmen. Die Galerie im Kraftwerk am Wasserfall zeigt Werke der Künstlerin Franziska Stünkel. Seit 2009 arbeitet sie an ihrer fortlaufen-den fotografischen Serie »Coexist«. Darin beschäftigt sie sich intensiv mit der gleichsam hochaktuellen und zeitlosen Thematik der Koexistenz der vielfältigen Ebenen menschli-chen Seins. Ausgangspunkt ihrer Fotografien sind natürliche Spiegelungen und Reflexionen auf Glas. Die Fotografien entstanden bisher in Asien, Afrika und Europa - darunter aktuell auch in Bad Gastein. Ihre vielschichtigen Werke des Bad-Gastein-Zyklus kommen in der Galerie im Kraftwerk zur Uraufführung. The gallery in the power station on the waterfall is showing works by Franziska Stün-kel. Since 2009, she has been working on her ongoing photographic series »Coexist«. This project deals intensively with the very current and yet timeless theme of the coexis-tence of various levels of human existence. The starting point for her photographs are natural reflections on glass. Photographs for this project have been taken in Asia, Africa, and Europe – currently including Bad Gastein. Her multifaceted works as part of the Bad Gastein series will be premiered in the gallery in the power station. Gezeigt wurden die Arbeiten der 33 internationalen Künstler, die in den letzten fünf Jahren Teil des Stipendiaten-Programmes waren. Die Vielfalt der geschaffenen Werke reicht von Malerei über Skulptur, Zeichnung und Video bis hin zu Fotografie.
