Things to see and do
New York City’s largest cluster of art institutions and museums outside of Manhattan is in LIC. LIC’s artistic and cultural offerings include fine art, at places like MoMA PS1 (D7), SculptureCenter (E6) and Noguchi Museum (E1); theater, at venues like the Chocolate Factory Theater (B7) and Secret Theatre (D6); and film, at the Museum of the Moving Image (H4).
LIC has a wide variety of restaurants and cafes offering an array of world cuisines at every level of dining, as well as a great selection of unique bars.
Many places to eat and drink are located on Vernon Boulevard (B7) and Jackson Avenue (D7), 44 Drive (D6), Queens Plaza (E5), and 36 Avenue (G4).
There are many wonderful parks and plazas in the area for relaxation and play. Perhaps the grandest among them is Gantry Plaza State Park and Hunters Point South Park (A7), which offer ample seating and spectacular waterfront views of Midtown Manhattan.
Gantry Plaza State Park also is home to the famous Pepsi-Cola sign (B6), which occupies the former site of a Pepsi-Cola factory. Enjoy ferries, food, dog runs, playgrounds and quiet spaces.
LIC offers a diversity of unique shops. LIC’s central retail strip is Vernon Boulevard (B7). Look out for stores along Jackson Avenue (D7), the eastern portion of Queens Plaza (E5), and in Sunnyside (H7).

The current situation
Without love, care nor dignity.
___ Wayfinding for Moscow2013
Wayfinding encompasses all the ways in which people orientate themselves in physical space and navigate from place to place.
Key principles:
1. Better than best practice 2. User centred 3. Whole journey 4. All modes and media 5. Unified design language
___ Wayfinding for Moscow2013
Putting people at the heart of the journey experience
Moscow is delivering a user-centred approach to designing and planning transport for people moving around the city.
___ Wayfinding for Moscow2013
A unified navigation system – the most comprehensive of its kind anywhere in the worldThe vision is to build a world-class legible transport network that improves the experience of the city for its citizens and visitors alike. The ‘glue’ to connect the city
A transport network communicated through a unified system of connected parts.
It involves the design and installation of 1,000’s of elements to join up the network.

A range of new products
The wayfinding elements will be with the user every step of their journey, above ground and below ground.
Each and every product will be designed for its specific location providing tailored travel choices to enable people to take their next step with confidence.

Building a unique visual identity
A unique visual identity can help connect transport services and aid navigation.
Many great cities have their own typeface. Now Moscow has Moscow Sans. Designed by A2 Type with Ilya Ruderman. It will become part of Moscow’s DNA and enduring city identity.
___ Wayfinding for Moscow2013
___ Wayfinding for Moscow2014
Bespoke pictogram set
Drawn from the ‘DNA’ of the city and to reflect the character of the unique urban environment.
Designed specifically for Moscow, they deliver the required levels of legibility on all information products within the wayfinding system.
___ Wayfinding for Moscow2013
Mapping system for all modes
Heads up mapping, always orientated to the flow of a person’s location and onward journey provides walking time and crucially reveals pedestrian space, not just a road layout. The underground Metro environment is also shown to allow planning and navigation.
___ Wayfinding for Moscow2013
Building illustrations
Two and three dimensional representations of clearly visible and known landmark buildings are used as an added layer of information to aid navigation.
These beautiful illustrations developed with Ocula bring the personality and reality of the city to the information.
___ Wayfinding for Moscow2014
Typographic standards
Minimum type sizes relative to acceptable reading distances meet international standards.
Colour
Colour and contrast is tested to ensure maximum legibility for visually impaired users.
___ Wayfinding for Moscow2013
A range of new products
Inspired by Moscow and its Metro.
___ Wayfinding for Moscow2013
Product design
The products have been designed to respect and compliment the varied environments in which they are placed.
Their dignified form is a response to the architecture of Moscow’s buildings, public realm and Metro interiors.

Planning for viable alternatives to the car
To create a truly interconnected transport system the goal must be to make the transport network legible – a network that is easy to understand and intuitive to use.
Making public transport more attractive
1. Put people first – the designer is not the hero 2. Holistic approach – co-plan, co-design, co-deliver 3. Vision and values – aim to be better than best practice 4. Of the city for the city – a unique expression 5. Seamless – extendable but with flexibility 6. Build design resources – ensure legacy 7. Invest once and wisely – quality delivers a ROI
