gal credentials. “The last season is about holding up a
mirror to our characters and saying wemight be rooting for them, but from anethical perspective, (they) have to dealwith the consequences of all their eth-ical choices of the last eight years,”Korsh says.
Torres’ Jessica may make a “Suits”appearance, although Korsh is still de-termining how to bring her back withoutdisrupting the spinoff ’s effort to estab-lish its own story and tone.
In the new show, Jessica moves toChicago as a high-powered fixer forMayor Bobby Novak (Morgan Spector).
Jessica is “ well-known for being re-lentless, intelligent and unapologeticfor being those things,” says Torres. “Butwe are no longer in the world of corpo-rate law. We are in the world of Chicagopolitics, which is rife with conflict and
corruption. ‘Pearson’ is also based morein real day-to-day issues,” such as cam-paign contributions, school inequalityand housing affordability.
It also presents the broad range ofpeople who live in Chicago. “There’s agreater percentage of our population
that is depicted, that is seen. We shootits diversity, its socioeconomic dispar-ities,” Torres says.
Jessica is more off-balance in thisalien terrain, navigating a sometimesfriendly, sometimes adversarial rela-tionship with the mayor, while trying toget what she needs from City Hall rivals.
“We wanted to see a Jessica whodidn’t have all the answers all the time,”as she often seemed to in Manhattancorporate law, Torres says.
Torres says she had no interest in aspinoff when she left “Suits.”
“I was absolutely done with Jessica,”Torres says. “But I was so fascinated bythe 2016 election and the people in-volved in it. It inspired ‘Pearson,’ be-cause I started thinking of Jessica inthat world because she is as motivated(as candidates and officeholders) to getwhat she wants done.”
She sees a similarity between Jessicaand “men and women who go into poli-tics wanting to do the right thing. Some-where along the line, they have to makea compromise for the greater good, andbefore you know it, it’s one compromisetoo many. Are they corrupt or just lost?”Torres says.
Jessica will face many challenges asshe tries to make life better for Chicago’sresidents.
“She’s now in a very different citythat doesn’t like outsiders, and she isnot welcome. She has a lot of people towin over,” Torres says. “She will still finda way to make it entertaining in theprocess, but it’s not going to be easy.”
