STOPPING ENGINE

26

I lf engine does not start, wait for about30 seconds, switch glow plugs on againand start as described.

I When engine has reached its normaloperating temperature, push the coldstart handle in.

Cpld weather staning

Planning ahead for the cold weather willhelp assure good starting and driving.

At temperatures below 20" F (-7" C),Diesel Fuel No. 2 loses its fluidity due towax separation, which may clog the fuelfilter or tank strainer and keep the enginefrom running.

Therefore, use Diesel fuel No. 1 orwinter-ized Diesel fuel No. 2,it you expect thosetemperatures. For details see page 50.

Engine oil gets thicker as it gets colder, making i ank the engine whenstarting. ttery has less energyto crank when it is cold. YourDiesel engine, however, needs to becranked fast (faster than a gasolineengine) before it will start.

Change over to the proper engine oilviscosity when cold weather sets in (seeoil viscosity chart for engine oils onpage 56). You may also want your dealerto have an engine block heater installed toincrease engine cranking speed, and abattery warmer to keep your battery atoptimum pedormance.

Starting warm engine

I Do not pull out cold start handle.

I Do not depress accelerator whilestarting.

I The glow plug light will not light up. Youcan start the engine immediately.

Applies to all engines:

I Turn key back to position 1.

Do not immediately afterhard or ving. Keep enginerunning idle for about twominutes to prevent excessive heatbuild-up.

I The radiator fan switches on auto-matically when the coolant reaches acertain temperature and continues to run(even with ignition off) until the coolanttemperature drops.

Aftdr the. break-in period, the followingspeeds should not be exceeded:

Applies to all vehicles:I Details on how to operate both Manualand Automatic transmission are outlinedin the "Operating controls" chaptor.

I Avoid full throttle starts and abruptstops.

r Try to avoid running the engine at max-imum speed - changing up early helps tosave fuel and reduces noise.

I Do not overstrain engine; select propergear or driving positioi before relcn'rgtop speeds.

I Do not let engine labour - changedown . when engine no longer runssmoothly.

r All speeds are only valid when enginers properly warm.

I Always observe local and nationalspeed limits.

OPERATE YOUR VEHICLE ECONOMICALLY

We made great efforts to make Yourvehicle fuel efficient. However, fueleconomy will vary depending on where, when and how you drive, on the optionalequipment installed and on the conditionof your vehicle.

I Keep a light foot on the accelerator.

I Drive smoothly, avoid abrupt changesin speed as much as Possible.

I Avoid jack rabbit starts and suddenstops.

I Avoid unnecessary idling. Turn theengine off.

I "Warm up" idling wastes gas. Starttheengine just before you are ready to drive.Accelerate slowly and smoothlY.

I Do not drive longer than necessary inthe lower gears. By shifting up early youcan economize on fuel consumption.

I Organize your trips to include in sev-eral errands.

I Any additional weight carried in thevehicle reduces fuel economy. Alwayskeep cargo to a minimum and remove allunnecessary items.

I Remove roof and ski racks when not inuse.

I All electrical consumers contribute toincreased fuel consumption. Therefore, use fan, rear window defogger, etc., onlywhen needed.

I Check your vehicle's fuel consumptionregularly. Keep a written tally sheet or usethe trip odometer. Fuel consumption willvary with traffic, road and weatherconditions.

I lf average fuel consumption seems toincrease, have the vehicle inspected.A well tuned and properly maintainedvehicle will help you maintain optimumfuel economy.

I Air cleaner should be inspected toassure proper engine "breathing".

I Battery should be fullY charged.

I Wheels should be properly aligned.

I Tires should be inflated to correctpressures.

I The published EPA mileage estimatesmay vary, depending on sPeed, weatherand trip length. Your actual highwaymileage will probably be less.

I Have the engine oil level checked withevery fuel filling. Engine oil consumptionis normal but tends to be higher when theengine is new. The use of quality engineoil-and a correct engine oil level areessential for vehicle performance andeconomical operation at all times.

FUEL SUPPLY

Gasoline engine:

Vehicles with catalytic converterrequire unleaded fuel with a minimumoctane rating of 91 RON.

An embossed reminder sticker is on theinstrument cluster, and another stickeris located next to the fuel filler cap.

Such vehicles have a smaller fuel tankopening, and gas station pumps havesmaller nozzles. This will prevent acci-dental pumping of leaded fuels.

Deposits from leaded gasolines destroythe catalytic converter and thus defeatits purpose to control exhaust emissions.

Unleaded fuels may not be availableor.ltside the continental U.S. and Cana-da. Therefore, we'reoommend you donot take your car to areas or countrieswhere unleaded fuel may not beavailable.

Vehicles without catalytic convertercan be driven with regular fuel, includinglow-lead an unleaded fuel with a mini-mum octane rating of 91 RON.

Octane ratingOctane rating indicates a gasoline'sability to resist detonation. Therefore, buying the correct octane gas is impor-tant to prevent engine "knock", whichreduces performance and may causeengine damage.

Under high load operating conditions, high test unleaded gasoline may be used.Regular fuels have an octane ratingranging frorn 91 to 95 RON (ResearchOctane Number) or 87 to 91 CLC (U.S.Cost of Living CouncilOctane rating).

The 91 RON octane rating which youwill find on the inside of the fuel tankflap is based on the research method. The CLC octane rating usually displayedon U.S. gasoline pumps is calculated asfollows: Research octane number plusmotor octane number, divided by 2.That is:

RON + MON

2

The CLC octane rating is usually 4points less than RON rating:

91 RON equals 87 CLC95 RON equals 91 CLC

Do not use any fuel with octane ratingslower than 91 RON or 87 GLG.

GasoholA mixture of unleaded gasoline and etha-nol (ethyl alcohol) known as "Gasohol"is available in gas stations in some areas.

You may decide to use gasohol in yourVolkswagen, provided it contains notmore than 1 0% ethanol and the octane re-quirements for your vehicle are met.

However, we strongly recommend toswitch back to gasoline without ethanol,if you experience the following adverseeffects on your vehicle, because of theuse of gasohol:

- Deterioration of drivability and perfor-mance

- Substantially reduced fuel economy

- Generation of vapor lock and hot startproblems, specially at high altitudes orat high temperatures

- Engine malfunction or stalling.

The continued use of gasohol underthese conditions may adversely affectthe fuel and emission control systemsof your vehicle.

Diesel engine: Diesel Fuel No. 2

Service stations offering Diesel fuel aregenerally located on truck.routes of majorhighways Directories of Diesel fuelstations are usually sold at Diesel fuelstations.

Some U.S. states require permits to, purchase Diesel fuel. Check with youri State Motor Vehicle,Department.

.. Diese! fuel may not be available outsideIthe'continental U.S. and Canada, we

*iecommend you do not take your vehicle"r to countries whgre Diesel fuel may not be

bbtainable.

Yirur Dieselengine has been specificallyr designed to operate on Diesel fuel only.

'Therefore, do not use home heating oilor rcgular gasoline.

The pioperties of these luels may causeserious damage to the fuel iniectionsystem and !o the engine. This couldlead to additional expense and may alsoaffect your warranty.

Ia.

Winter operation

At temperatures below 20' F (-7' C),Diesel Fuel No. 2 loses its fluidity due towax separation, which may clog the fuelfilter or tank strainer and keep the enginefrom running.

lf you expect temperatures below 20'F (-7" C):

I Use Diesel Fuel No. 1, if available inyour area.

I lf Diesel Fuel No. 1 is not available, askyour fuel dealer whether his Diesel FuelNo. 2 is sufficiently winterized for theprevailing temperatures.

I As a measure of precaution, add acommercially available Diesel Fuel flowimprover (pour point depressant) to yourDiesel Fuel. Because of the manydifferent flow improvers on the market, aswell as differences in Diesel Fuel, theireffectiveness varies. Use only accordingto instructions on containers. '

I lf winterized Diesel Fuel No. 2 is notavailable, mix Diesel Fuel No. 2 with up to50 % Kerosene. Engine power may drop, therefore keep percentage of keroseneadded to Diesel Fuel as low as thetemperature allows.

lOnly if neither Diesel Fuel No. 1,winterized Diesel Fuel No. 2, nor Kero-sene are available, use up to 30 % leadedor unleaded gasoline.

I Do not use Premium gasdline.

I Mixing Diesel.Fuel No. 2 with Kero-sene (or gasoline) must be done be-fore wax starts to separate. Later mix-Ing may be effective in the fueltank butnot in the rest of the fuel system.

I Always add the correct amount ofKerosene (or gasoline) to the fueltankfirst, and then fill up with Diesel FuelNo.2.

I Do not use "starting assist fluids",they will cause engine damage.

I Do not use fuel line anti-freeze of-fered for gasoline engines.

CLEANING PRODUCTS EXTERIOR

Any automobile is subjected to abusefrom industrial fumes, corrosive road salt, abandoned lollipops, muddy dog feet, etc.; to name just a few. A well caredfor VW can look like new many yearslater. Regular and correct care will contri-bute to maintaining the beauty and thevalue of your VW.Your VW dealer has a number of car-careproducts and can advise you which onesto use for cleaning the exterior and in-terior of your vehicle.Whether you use VW recommended pro-ducts or other, commercially availablecleaning agents, make sure first of theircorrect application.

Washing and waxingThe paint on your VW is very durable butmust be protected from losing its lusterdue to outside influences. Therefore, wash and wax your VW often. The longerthe dirt is left on the paint, the greater therisk of damaging the glossy finish, eitherby scratching if the dirt is rubbed into thepaint, or simply by the chemical effect dirtparticles have on the paint surface.

Do not wash or wax in direct sunlight. Donot use hot water. Lukewarm to coolwater is kinder to the paint.

Use plenty of water, a car-wash and waxsolution and a soft sponge or hose brush.Begin by spraying water over the dry sur-face to remove all loose dirl before apply-ing the car-wash and wax solution. Useplenty of water to rinse the vehicle off.Wipe everything dry with a chamois toavoid water spots.

To guard against corrosion from insideout, clean drain holes on the bottom ofdoors, tail gates, hatches, etc., after eachwashing. Then wipe dry thoroughly. Alsoinspect all weatherstrips to make surethey do not allow water to enter the bodypanels.

Do not aim the water jet directly at door, hatch or rear lid locks. Tape the key holesto prevent water from seeping into thelock cylinders. Water in lock cylindersshould be removed with compressed air.To prevent locks from freezing in the win-ter, squirt glycerine or lock de-icer intothe lock cylinders. Do not use any solu-tion that can damage the body paint.

Page 54: - a useful website for owners and ... · Operating your vehicle outside the U.SA or Canada ... a useful website for owners and enthusiasts of VW Westfalia T25 / T3 / Vanagon Campervans

The underside of the v6nicte picks up dirtand road salt used to keep streets andh[hways free of snow and ice. To guardagainst corrosion, it is important to re-move mud, debris and road salt from theunderside with a powerful jet of water. Besure to include the wheel housings, bum-pers, muffler, tailpipe and brackets. Thisshould be done twice a year and is bestaccomplished after the vehicle has beendriven through a heavy rain. Let engineand exhaust cool down before washing.

Waxing is not really needed when youhave used a car-wash and wax solution.lf you do not use a car-wash liquid withvuax, apply wax to preserve the naturalshine of the body paint. To obtain a longhsting finish, apply hard wax. Wax againwhen water remains on the surface inhrge patches instead of forming beadsand rolling off.

Use a polish when it becomes evidentthat waxing no longer accomplishes theiob. lf the polish you are using doesnot contain wax, apply hard wax afterpolishing.

Tar or oilDo not allow tar or oil to remain on thepaint. Remove as soon as possible witha cloth soaked with a special paint clea-ner. lf you do not have a tar or oil re-mover, you may substitute with turpen-tine. After applying a cleaning fluid, always wash with a lukewarm soap watersolution and apply a new wax coat.

InsectsRemove as soon as possible with a luke-warm soap water solution or insect re-mover.

Tree sapDo not allow tree sap or bird droppingsto harden on the paint. Remove with alukewarm soapwater solution.

Touch-up paintYour VW dealer has touch-up paint forminor scratches and stone chips. Scrat-ches should be touched up soon afterthey occur to prevent corrosion. lf corro-sion formation becomes visible, however,a simple touch-up job will not suffice. The affected surface must be smoothedwith sand paperand covered with an anti-rust primer, before restoring the paintedfinish.

WndowsKeep silicone sprays off the windshieldto avoid wiper smear in rain.

Clean all windows regularly to removeroad film and car-wash wax buildup. Usea lukewarm soap water solution or analcohol base commercial window clean-ing agent. lf a chamois is used for po-lishing the glass, it should exclusively beused for that purpose.

To assure that windshield washers andrear window washer* also function atfreezing temperatures, anti-freeze mustbe added to the washer fluid reservoirsbeforehand. lt is advisable to use win-dow washer solvent with anti-freeze allyear round. Follow directions on the canfor the right amounts to be used. Do notuse engine coolant anti-freeze or anyother solution that can damage the paint

Wper blades

Always loosen frozen wiper blades fromglass asthey maytearothenruise. Removeall wiper blades periodically and cleanthem thoroughly with an alcohol basecleaning solution. Use a sponge or softcloth and wipe lengthwise.

CORROSION PROTECTION

Plastics

Plastic parts, such as decorative stripes, panels, bumpers, etc., will come cleanduring normal car washing. Should addi-tional cleaning or spot removal be neces-sary, use a soft brush or cloth soaked witha mild detergent solution. Then rinsethoroughly and immediately with clearwater.

Do not use anything which could marthefinish of the plastic surface, such as waxor polish, harsh detergents or chemicalcleaning solvents.

Weatherstrips

To seal properly, weatherstrips aroundhood, hatch, windows, doors, etc., mustbe pliable. Spray with silicone or coat withtalcum powder or glycerine to retainflexibility of the rubber and to protectagainst freezing in the winter.

Sliding doorThe sliding door mounting points, theguide tracks and the roller guides shouldbe lubricated regularly and as often asnecessary.

The engine compartment, as well as allengine, transmission, front and rear axleassembly surfaces have been treated atthe factory with a wax based coating forprotection against corrosion.

Engine Compartment

lf it becomes necessary to steam cleanor otherwise wash the engine oompart-ment, the wax based protective coatingis usually lost. lt is therefore important toreapply this protective coating to all en-gine compartment panels, flanges, cavi-ties, seams and engine assembly sur-faces.

Ghassis

The lbwer body shell of your VW isthoroughly protected against corrosion. However, it is recommended to have theunderside inspected twice a year. Anydetected damage to the undercoating, due to road hazards, should be repairedpromptly. Oil based protective spraysmust not be applied. Only tar or w€xbased anticorrosion protectors are com:patible with th'e factory applied under-coating. Before application, road dirt, saltspray deposits and oily substances mustbe removed.

Whenever the lower body shell, axle, transmission or engine assemblies havebeen repaired, the lost anticorrosioncoating of the affected surfaces shouldbe renewed.

Let yourVW dealer advise and assist you.

Engine

Always use quality oil/petroleum basedand/or synthetic based. The terms "APlService SE or SF' (Gasoline engine) or"CD" (Diesel engine) must appear on theoil container singly or in combinationwith other designations.

Engine oils are graded according to theirviscosity. The proper grade to be usedin your engine depends on existing cli-matic or seasonal conditions.

Refer to the temperature chart whenselecting engine oil. As temperature ran-ges of the different oil grades overlap,

brief variations in outside temperaturesare no cause for alarm. lt is also per-missible to mix oil of different viscosities ifyou find it necessary to add oil.

When using SAE 10 W or SAE 5 W-20engine oil, avoid high speed long dis-tance driving if outside temperaturerises above the indicated limits.

Oil change intervals specified in theWarranty & Maintenance booklet accom-panying the vehicle must be adhered to,including intervals for oil filter change.

ENGINE OIL

5g ,,, 1. ,.1WABNtN.GS1,':Ont.p ',521

Engine oil consumption

It is normal for your engine to consumeoil. The rate of oil consumption dependson the quality and viscosity of oil, thespeed at which the engine is operated, the climate, road conditions as well asthe amount of dilution and oxidation of thelubricant.

Because of these variables, no standardrate of oil consumption can be establish-ed, but drivers should expect an increas-ed oil consumption at high speeds andwhen the engine is neW.

I The engine in your vehicle depends onoil to lubricate and cool all of itsmoving pafts. Therefore the engine oilshould be checked regularly and keptat the required level.

I Make it a habit to have the engine oillevel checked with every fuel filling.

I Lack of sufficient engine oil may leadto severe engine damage.

I The oil pressurewarning light is not anoil level indicator.

Gasoline engine

The engine oil dipstick and the oil fillerneck are located behind the license platetid.

Checking the engine oil levelI Turn off the engine.I To get a true reading, the vehicleshould be on level ground. After turningoff the engine, wait a few minutes for theoil to return to the crankcase.I Flip license plate down.I Pull out dipstick and wipe it clean witha rag.I Reinsert dipstick; push it in all the wayfor an accurate reading.I Pull dipstick out again. The oil level iscorrect if it is between the "max" and"min" marks on the dipstick.I lf oil level is below "min" mark, or notshowing on dipstick, add oil immediately.

Diesel engine

Adding engine oilI Unscrew cap from oil filler neck.I Pull extension tube out of filler neck asfar as it will go.

I Only add the amount of oil needed.Always select a quality oil with the correctspecification. See "Lubricants" on page56.The difference between the "min" and"max" marks on the dipstick is about1 U.S. quart or 1 liter.

I Push in the extension tube, replacefiller cap and hand tighten securely.I Check oil level with dipstick.

AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FLUID / MANUAL TRANSMISSION OIL

Automatic Transmission Fluid

The torque converter and the transmis-sion are lubricated with Automatic Trans-mission Fluid (ATfl.

The final drive requires hypoid oil SAE 90or SAE 80 W/90, which does not haveto be changed.

Checking the ATF level

The ATF has to be checked at frequentintervals, for instance, when the engineoil is being checked or at least at theintervals specified in your Warranty &Maintenance booklet.

A correct ATF level is very important fortransmission operation.

The ATF should be checked when it iswarm, with the engine idling, the selectorlever in Neutral and the parking brakeapplied.

The ATF filler neck is in the engine com-partement on the left hand side. The dip-stick is attached to the plug. Pull it outand wipe it clean first before inserting itto take a reading. The Automatic transmission may bedamaged by even a tiny speck of dirtOnly use lint free rags to wipe thedipstick Use a clean funnel or spoutwhen adding ATF.

You have enough ATF if the fluid levelis between the two marks on the dip-stick. lt should never be above or belowthese marks.

lf level is too high or too low do notjust add or drain ATF. Have your dealercheck and correct the cause as soon asposible.

For correct ATF specifications, see "Lu-bricants" on page 56.

Changing the ATF

The ATF has to be changed at the inter-vals specified in your Warranty & Main-tenance booklet.

Do not tow the vehicle or run the enginewithout ATF in the trcnsmission.

Manual Transmission Oil

Both transmission and final drive arecombined in one housing. The lubricantused is hypoid oil which does not haveto be changed.

COOLING SYSTEM

The cooling system is sealed a1d gene-rally requires little attention.

For year round driving, anti-freeze isadded at the factory for temperaturesdown to:

-13" Fl-25" C (USA)

-31" F/-35" C (Canada)

Because ol its anti-corrosion propefties,anti-freeze should also remain in the coo-ling system for summer oPeration.

The coolant levelshould be checked fromtime to time, and always before going ona longer trip.

Should you ever notice a loss of coolanthave the cause promptly corrected byyour VW dealer.

The refill tank and the expansion tank arein the engine comPartment.

The coolant level is normally checkedonly in the refill tank (behind the licenseplate lid).

The expansion tank needs checking onlyif a large amount of coolant is lost or if thewarning light in the water temperaturegauge lights up.

Refill tank Gasoline engine

Checking the coolant level

On the refill tank and the expansion tank, the cap need not be taken off, since thetanks are transparent.

On the refill tank, the coolant level mustbe between the min. and max. markswhen engine is cold and not running'When engine is warm, coolant level maybe slightly above max. mark. The expansion tank is equipped with anelectric coolant level checking device. When the coolant level is too low, thewarning light in the water temperaturegauge lsee page 30) will flash until thecoolant level has been restored to normal.

Expansion tank Gasoline engine

Adding coolant

Wnter operation

At the beginning of. the winter season, have the coolant chdcked for anti-freezeconcentration. lf you have to add, useany quality phosphate-free anti-freezecontaining ethylene glycolwhich is avai-lable at your VW dealer.

The ratio between water and anti-freezedepends on the anticipated outside tem-peratures.

lncreasing the anti-freeze in the coolantfurther than shown on the container isnot only uneconomical, it is also (etri-mental to engine cooling.

V.BELT WINDSHIELD / REAR WINDOW WASHER CONTAINER-

Tension checking

Correct V-belt tension is important foroverall vehicle performance, in particular, tension of the V-belt which drives thewater pump (see also page 89).

Tensioning and replacing of V-belts ve-hicle should be performed by your VWdealer or a qualified workshop.

The filler cap is located at the left sideof the driver's footwell.

Vehicles with rear window wiper andwasher have an additional container onthe right in the luggage compartment.

To fill the container, unsnap cover andunscrew the filler cap. After filling thecontainer, screw the cap on tightly andclose cover.

The capacities of the containers are listedunder "Capacities" on page 90.

As clear water is usually not adequatefor cleaning the glass, add a cleaningsolution to the water.

Use windshield washer solvent withanti-freeze all year round. lt helps tokeep your windshield and rear windowclean and prevents freezing of fluid in thewinter.

Do not use engine coolant ahti-freezeor any other solution that can damagethe vehicle paint.

Follow the directions on the can for thecorrect amount to be used.

After filling the container press the caponto the filler neck.

BATTERY

The battery is located underthefront pas-senger seat. To check the battery, movethe seat all the way fonruard. On vehicles with Diesel engine the bat-tery is located in the engine compartmenton the right.

Electrolyte levelUnder normal operating conditions, thebattery in your VW is maintenance-free.At high outside temperatures it is ad-visable, however, to check the fluid levetat regular intervals through the transpa-rent battery housing. The fluid levelshould always be between the "min" and"max" marks in each cell.

lf the fluid level is below the "min" mark, let your VW dealer correct the condition.

Wnter operationDuring the winter months, battery cap-acity tends to decrease as temperaturesdrop. Additionally, more power is con-sumed while starting, and the headlights, hedter, rear window defogger, etc., areused morefrequently.Curtail unnecessarypower consumption, particularly in citytraffic or when travelling short distancesonly. Let your VW dealer test the bat-tery's capacity before winter sets in. Awell charged battery will not only preventstafting problems but will also live longer.

Cleaning terminals and connections

The terminals and connections shouldbe kept clean and greased with siliconespray or petroleum jelly. Make sure theground connection to the body is tightand free of corrosion.

Never drive the vehicle with a discon-nected battery as this may damage theelectrical system.

Replacing batteryA replacement battery must have thesame specifications as the original equip-ment battery. Specifications are listed onthe battery housing. Make sure the repla-cement battery can be installed correcilyand securely. See "Removing and rein-stalling battery" on page 82.

Tire pressuresThe original equipment tires and wheelrims on your vehicle comply with allapfl'rcable Federal Motor Vehicle Safety$andards.

To maintain these safety standards, re-rrernber the following:

f Wheel rims, wheel bolts or lug nuts areneched to fit your VW.

I llo not attempt to mount wheels ofdprvehicle types on your VW; not evenrl-els of a previous model year VW ofilEsametype.

I Tlp use of wheel rims, wheel bolts orlfg nuts that do notd-teodginalfactoryrl afbct the safOrC*1e...-,,",.n1 . -:f @rc you plan on exchanging steelJEdq light alloy wheels, or winter tires-dV mounted on wheel rims, consultpu Wl dealer. He has the technical

Required cold tire inflation pressures arelisted on a sticker on the left doorjamb.

Use an accurate tire pressure gaugewhen checking inflation pressures. Donot exceed the maximum tire inflationpressure listed on the tire sidewall. Coldtire inflation pressure means: when avehicle has not been driven for at least3 hours or less than 1 mile.

Always include the spare tire during apressure check.

Tire life and rotationTire life depends on various factors, i. e.roads, traffic and weather conditions, driving habits, type of tires and tire care.

lnspect your tires at least every 2,000miles or 3,000 km for wear and damage.lf you notice uneven or substantial we-ar,wheels might need alignment or tiresshould be balanced or replaced.

:-0

843-155

Tire manufacturers recommend rotationevery 7,500 miles or 12,000 km for radiatbelted tires. Rotation and balancing, al-though an expense to you, will prolongtire life. The sketch illustrates how tiresshould be rotated.

Tires must always remain on same sideof vehicle.

After rotation adjust tire pressure andtorque wheel nuts diagonally to 123 ftlb/17 mkg. (Please refer to "Changing awheel" on pages 73-75.)

Page 71: - a useful website for owners and ... · Operating your vehicle outside the U.SA or Canada ... a useful website for owners and enthusiasts of VW Westfalia T25 / T3 / Vanagon Campervans

lf you notice that tires are wearing un-evenly, consult your VW dealer. Unievenwear may not always be due to improperwheel alignment. lt can be the resuli ofindividual driving habits such as corner-ing at high speeds. lf the tire pressure isnot checked and adjusted regularly, abnormal tire wear can also occui.

Tire care

Tire replacement

ln the interest of maximum safety andbest all-around vehicle handling, alwaysbuy replacement radial tires that have thesame specifications with regard to tiresize, design, load carrying capacity, treadpattern, tread depth, etc. This also appliesto WV recommended alternate replace-ment tires.lf your tires are worn to the safe limit, replace all 4 tires at the same time.lf this is not possible, replace tires inpairs, either front or rear. Do not combinetires of different design, size or treadpattern.

Tire wearThe original equipment tires on yourvehicle have built-in wear indicators. Theyare molded into the bottom of the treadgrooves and will appear as approxima_lely 11, inch (12 mm) bands when thetire tread depth is down to r,/ro of aninch (1.6 mm).

When the indicators appear in two ormore adjacent grooves, it is time to re-place the tires. We recommend, how-ever, that you do not let the tires weardown to this extent. Worn tires cannotgrip the road surface properly, and areeven less effective on wet roads.

70www.WestfaliaT3.info - a useful website for owners and enthusiasts of VW Westfalia T25 / T3 / Vanagon Campervans

Page 72: - a useful website for owners and ... · Operating your vehicle outside the U.SA or Canada ... a useful website for owners and enthusiasts of VW Westfalia T25 / T3 / Vanagon Campervans

Tire specifications are imprinted on thesidewall of the tires. lf in doubt, checkwith your VW dealer.

Whenever replacing a tubeless tire, al-rays install a new valve stem. Tire re-pair should only be performed by a spe-cialist.

Sfheel balancingA wheel should always be balanced af-ter a tire repair. Even with regular usea wheel can get out of balance, andsltould therefore be balanced from timeto time. Unbalanced wheels may affectuehicle handling and tire life.

knoving and storing tiresThe driving direction should be clearlymarked on all tires before removing themfur storage, to make sure they are re-rpunted and run in the same direction asbeilorb. Store tires in a cool and dry place. When remounting put the tires with themost tread depth at the front.

Wnter tiresWinter tires are not absolutely essentialon vehicles with radial ply tires, becauseradial ply tires are very good on winterroads.

For a better grip on snow and ice, useradial M*S tires or winter tires with studs.Check with your local Motor VehicleBureau for possible restrictions. Becauseof the special design characteristics ofradial ply M*S tires, they shoutd be in-flated 3 psi above the cold tire inflationpressures required for the regular radialply tires. However, do not exceed themaximum tire inflation pressure listed onthe tire sidewall. Winter tires should havethe same load capacity as original equip-ment tires and should be mounted on allfour wheels. Winter tires with studsshould be run at moderate speeds whennew in order to give the studs time tosettle.

Do not drive a vehicle equipped with win-ter tires at prolonged high speed. Wintertires do not havd the same degree oftraction on dry, wet or snowfree roadsas a normal tire. Fudhermore, winter tireswear rapidly under these conditions.

Winter tires do not fulfill their purposeif the tread depth is less than s/sz in(4 mm).

Snow chains

Snow chains can be used on the rearwheels only.

Check with local authorities for possiblerestrictions.

Only use chains with fine pitch linksprotruding no more lhan t/z in/15 mmfrom tire tread and side walls, includ-ing tensioner. Wheels must rotate freelyin all steering positions with chainsmounted to prevent damage to body, axleor brake components. Remove chainswhen roads are lree of snow.

ln the interest of clean airFdlution of our environment has be-oome a problem that is of increasingoo{lcern to all of us. We urge you toirin us in our efiods for cleaner air incontrolling the pollutants emitted fromthe automobile.

Volkswagen has developed an emissioncontrol system that controls or reducesthose parts of the emission that can beharmful to our environment. Your gaso-frre engine VW is equipped with such aslstem.

ly'olkswagen warrants the Emission Con-tsol System in your new vehicle underthe terms and conditions set forth in thelrlananty & Maintenance booklet.

Your Volkswagen with gasoline engineb equipped with such a system, whichcontains the following major compo-rEnts.

Catalytic convefter*The catalytic converter is an efficient*dean-up" device built into the exhaustsastem of the vehicle. The catalytic con-verter burns the undesirable pollutantsh the exhaust gas before it is releasedilrto the atmosphere.

avhere applicable

The exclusive use of unleaded fuel iscritically important for the life of thecatalytic converter. Therefore, only un-leaded gasoline without additives mustbe used.

The eatalytic converter will be damagedby

I push or tow starting your vehicleI misfiring of the engineI turning off the ignition while the ve-hicle is moving or

I other unusual operating conditions.

Do not continue to operate your vehicleunder these conditions, as othenrisefud can reach the catalytic converter. This could result in overheating of theconverter.

For maintenance intervals refer to yourWarranty & Maintenance booklet.

Orygen Sensor(OXS).

The oxygen sensbr, installed in the ex-haust manifold, continuously senses theoxygen content of the exhaust and sig-nals the information to an electronic con-trol unit.

Every 30,000 miles/48,000 km, the OXSlight on the instrument panel will comeon and stay on to remind you to takeyour vehicle to your VW dealer for thescheduled emission control rnaintenancedescribed in your Warranty & Mainte-nance booklet.

Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR).

Some of the exhaust gas from the en-gine is diverted before it enters the muff-ler. This gas is routed back into theintake manifold. An exhaust gas recir-culation valve controls the flow to theintake manifold. The exhaust gas recircu-lated into the combustion chambers ofthe engine helps to lower the formationof oxides of nitrogen (NOx) during thecombustion process.
