* In Ecclesia are an excellent Taunton based chamber choir. They were founded in the early 1950s as a group to bring choral music to small churches. Today they travel extensively to sing services and give concerts in a wide range of places, from small village churches, to towns and cathedrals, including most recently Exeter, York Minster and Westminster Abbey.

They will be in Christ Church on Sunday 18th June to sing Choral Eucharist at 9.45 am with music of Palestrina and Thomas Tallis.

All are most welcome to join us for the service. There will be refreshments afterwards in the village hall, if you would like to join us for that please let us know so we can get the catering just about right.

BRENTOR COMMONSBad news on the rabbit front: the bid for freedom seems to have come to an end as nobody has seen it for more than a week. Perhaps it has gone to the great burrow in the sky.

When driving past the same area of the common we saw a pair of linnets. It had been raining heavily and there were puddles at the roadside where they were bathing. There was a great commotion with splashes and much flapping of wings and we were able to sit in the car and watch them for quite some time. An absolute delight.

As the seasons progress there is always a new tapestry of colour to maintain our interest. The largely white umbelliferae, the umbrella shaped flowers along the roadside, are always changing. The cow parsley is now fading and the pignut is the dominant one on the common. It is so called because below each flower is an edible small tuber. I suspect they were a favourite of pigs when they led a much more foraging life. The hedgerows are now at their best with the pink of the campions and the bluebells creating a back drop for many other summer flowers that are starting to bloom.

A tree we have noticed recently is the horse chestnut to the left of the big ash tree. It has been more obvious because of its white candelabra that have been apparent in recent weeks. This tree must have been planted there, but it was well before the plantings by the commons association. It would be interesting to know when this was done and by whom. There is also a grove of sweet chestnut in the northeast corner. These are youngish trees have quite smooth branches and stems, not the gnarled and spiral bark of the mature tree.

MARY TAVY AND BRENTOR COMMUNITY PRIMARY SCHOOLWe had a huge amount of sporting success last term with our teams winning the Tavistock Small Schools Swimming Gala, Tag Rugby Festival and Football Tournament. Our Cross Country runners came second in the Small School Cross Country League with many of our children earning places in the top twenty overall. We continue to promote sport at the school and will be entering a wide variety of competitions in the local area this term as well as celebrate National Sports Week in June.

We are delighted that our waterless toilet, the Woo Woo, has now been installed at our field as a result of the Tesco Bags of Help grant. This will make a huge difference to the outdoor learning curriculum and the school will now be able to organise and run events for other local schools and the community. Thank you to everyone in the local community who voted for us.

Our popular clubs are up and running; drama, art, sewing, singing, Fun at the Field, scooter, computer and singing clubs. We have some very exciting topics for this term: Plants and Animals, Invaders and Settlers and What a Beautiful World and to link in with our topics, KS2 will be visiting RHS Rosemoor and KS1 hope to visit Dartmoor Zoo.

We are also pleased that we have nearly reached our target which will enable the school to fund a Guide Dog puppy. Our concert with the Tamar Valley Male Voice Choir and our Singing Club really boosted the funds. Do feel very welcome to come along to our PTA Summer Fayre on Friday 30th June between 6.00 and 8.00pm at Coronation Hall in Mary Tavy.

Some photos from the village hall spring clean. People worked so hard and made a BIG difference.....even if Sheryl's favourite tongs went walkabout, it WAS a very successful day.

Goodbye to Villages in Action

events.

Hello to Mary Tavy Live!Watch out for exciting news

later in the year.

Playing Field UpdateA rather small band of helpers arrived at the Playing Field on Saturday 13th May but we were able to make a differ-ence. The areas of bare earth were raked over and the larger stones and roots removed. The ground has now been seeded and fingers crossed the grass will grow; it was well watered over the next few days! In addition, wild flower seeds have been scattered in the corner of the field by the dragon and the area taped off. Please try to avoid walking on the seed beds until the grass has become established.

A Dog Waste Bin has been purchased by Brentor Parish Council and is now installed near the entrance gate. Please clear up after your dog and use the bin provided. A box of dog waste bags is close by so if you have come “ill equipped” please help yourself. There is no excuse for not clearing up. Sue 860374 and Kate 810287

"Toil & Trouble" - the movie - now viewable online: see the home page on village website!

VERY disappointing turn out for the Village Hall and Playing Field AGM. 7 in total and only 3 of those from the actual village. We need support and ideas if we are to continue enjoying our Village Hall. - Sheryl
