2 AMSOIL ACTION NEWS / MAY 2008

A. J. “Al” AmatuzioPresident and CEO, AMSOIL INC.

With our 35th Anniversary Convention approachingI am going to use my space in this month’s issue toreflect a little on the journey this company has taken. In doing so, I am hopeful that those just beginningtheir AMSOIL businesses and those not yet con-vinced they can succeed in theirs will gain addi-tional appreciation for the opportunity they havethrough AMSOIL and begin journeys of their owntoward the freedom and financial security that theopportunity can provide.

What many people don’t realize is that myresearch on synthetic motor oil began much soonerthan the 1972 introduction of the world’s first API-rated synthetic motor oil. It was in the early-1960swhen it struck me that if synthetic oil was the onlytype of oil able to withstand the tremendousdemands of the engines in the jets I was flying, whynot bring that same technology to the automotiveindustry? It would, I reasoned, extend the lives ofautomobile engines and, quite possibly, earn me abuck or two.

I submerged myself in the study of lubricationand began formulating and marketing synthetic oilsof my own. After several years, thousands of hours ofintense research and a variety of oils under a varietyof names we ultimately created the formulation thatbecame the original AMSOIL 10W-40 SyntheticMotor Oil. That, in hindsight, may have been theeasy part.

For those too young to remember, the price ofmotor oil in the early 1970s was, in most cases, wellunder a dollar per quart. Our oil, on the other hand, was considerably more robust, and consequentlymore expensive. It wasn’t an easy sell. Consumers sawit on the shelves, but had no understanding of thebenefits it provided. Then, in 1973, we began multi-level marketing. Dealers could now meet face-to-facewith consumers and convey the product benefits.Sales took off.

AMSOIL continued to break new ground. Oursecond product was our 100:1 Synthetic 2-Cycle Oil,which shattered the parameters in two-cycle oil per-formance. We followed that with synthetic gear lube, diesel oil and hydraulic oil. The list of AMSOIL firstswas growing.

Nothing good in life, however, comes easy. Themajor oil companies and car manufacturers refusedto recognize the superiority of our products. In fact, they failed to acknowledge synthetic lubricants at alland fought us every step of the way. It was onlywhen consumers by the thousands began embracingAMSOIL products that the major companies followedour lead. Car manufacturers not only began recom-mending synthetic lubricants, they began requiringthem in many models. And all the oil companiesbegan introducing synthetics of their own. As anold AMSOIL ad used to say, “Imitation is the sincer-est form of flattery, and we appreciate it.”

We also fought battles on other fronts. Pennzoilsued us for the Z in our name, claiming we stole itfrom them, when, in actuality it came from the Z inAmatuzio. A multi-level marketing company alsocame at us over our name. In that case, I battled incourt for a full seven and a half years before ulti-mately winning the judgment. That case alone costAMSOIL up to $100,000 a month, which was a ton ofmoney at that time.

Today, the challenges remain. We are in constantbattle to keep our raw material costs down to ensureour products remain competitively priced. We arecontinually researching new technologies to keepour products ahead of the competition. We are con-fronted daily with government regulations that affectour formulation strategies. And all the while, wemust manage our growth and expansion throughintelligent and financially responsible spending.

With 35 years behind us, we have establishedourselves as a leader in this industry. The AMSOILtrack record speaks for itself. We have set the stan-dards for lubrication performance and will continueto push those boundaries. You can be assured thatthis company’s commitment will remain as strong asit has ever been. With that said, I hope to see eachand every Dealer at our 35th Anniversary Conventionthis July to help celebrate our wonderful past and avery promising future.

change the oil every other year. I put about one quartof oil in during that time.”Note: AMSOIL recommends drain intervals of up to 35,000miles or one year, whichever comes first, when using SignatureSeries 0W-30 Synthetic Motor Oil in normal service.

A lot has changed since those days in the early1980s. Boicourt and his wife, Mary, both will turn 73 inJuly.

Marvin Boicourt of Bella Vista, Ark. became an AMSOILDealer 28 years ago. “We were one of the first 100Dealers who became ‘Lifetime Dealers,’” Boicourtsaid.

This July marks the AMSOIL 35th AnniversaryConvention in Duluth, Minn. It also marks 25 yearssince Marvin and Mary Boicourt attended the com-pany’s 10th Anniversary Convention and drove homein a new car.

“It was a 1983 four-door Chevy Citation,” Boicourt said.It was an especially timely prize for the Boicourts

because they had recently given their car to one of theirfive daughters. “We rode up to the convention withsome people and we drove the new Citation home,”Boicourt said. “It was even burgundy, the exact colorI wanted.”

He put more than 240,000 miles on that Chevy, which was outfitted front to back with AMSOIL motoroils, drivetrain lubes and filters from the very beginning.

“I really like the convenience of AMSOIL products,”Boicourt said. “They do what the company says theywill do. I still use them in everything.”

Boicourt now drives a 2006 Cadillac and a Chevy S-10 pickup truck and installs AMSOIL Signature Series0W-30 Synthetic Motor Oil in all of his vehicles.

“I change the oil on the Cadillac every 25,000 miles,”he said. “The pickup has 133,000 miles on it and I

They run a moving business in Arkansas, alongwith several other retired people they know. “We retiredto Arkansas and we decided we didn’t want to just sitaround,” Boicourt said. “It’s not our bag.”

Although the Boicourts have not grown a bigAMSOIL business, they have some downline Dealerswho are growing their organizations, Boicourt said.

They also use ALTRUM products. “We attribute a lotof our energy to the Ultra Daily Enzymes,” he said. “Alot of people think I’m in my 60s. We’re very happy withAMSOIL lubricants, we use them in everything andwe’re happy with the vitamins and the fertilizers too. Wejust think AMSOIL is great. We have a lot of trust in theproducts.”

Thefilter-mount threads were subjected to similar tests ofdurability, with the full-flow mount withstanding 1.75turns of the filter past where the gasket meets themetal, and the by-pass mount withstanding 2.75 turnspast where the gasket meets the metal (This is not therecommended installation procedure. Proper installationinstructions are included with the mounts).

Old Vs. NewAMSOIL Technical Services Director Dan Peterson saidthe time for improvement was evident. “Fresh ideas, new concepts and considerable research led by Directorof Aftermarket Products Karl Dedolph and Filtration andAftermarket Technical Product Manager RichardHolappa resulted in improvements to our by-pass fil-tration products,” said Peterson. “The new kits provideimproved performance, increased longevity and easierinstallation. The design of the original billet mountsrestricted our ability to improve the performance of theoverall system. These improvements will help AMSOILDealers be even more successful in marketing and sell-ing products in this quickly-emerging area.”

Peterson cited improved oil flow, extra hose andsuperior fittings as areas of improvement. “Oil flow hasbeen improved throughout the entire system, ensuringthe precise amount of lubricant is flowing through theby-pass system while simultaneously keeping theengine protected,” he said. “Larger ports, increasedhose diameter and larger fittings were implemented toincrease flow, ensuring full compatibility with all OEM oilpressure sensor systems.”

In addition, four more feet of hose is included with thekits, ensuring most installations can be completed with-out ordering more hose to finish the job.

Upgrades to the By-Pass MountsThe new mounts have a powder-coated finish that lastslonger and resists chemical corrosion. They also haveraised machined surfaces for better gasket and o-ringsealing to further protect against leakage. In addition, thenew mounts feature HNBR gaskets and Viton o-rings.These top-of-the-line synthetic rubber materials are char-acterized by their high strength and property retentionafter exposure to heat, oil and chemicals. Commonlyfound in premium automotive, industrial and other per-formance-demanding applications, HNBR gaskets andViton o-rings provide superior, reliable sealing.

The new BMK mounts are made from an injection-molded A380-grade aluminum alloy with polymericvacuum impregnation, eliminating cracking and possi-ble leakage. This high-strength design has been provenin industrial applications. The new mounts featureimproved engineering to the internal design, resulting inmaximum oil cooling. In addition, in the Dual RemoteSystem, oil flows into the full-flow filter first, then into theby-pass filter, further reducing pressure drop.

AMSOIL ACTION NEWS / MAY 2008 11

More than 35 years of providing consistently superiorproducts has defined a new level of quality. AMSOIL hasbuilt its reputation on providing the most advancedsynthetic lubricants available, so quality control isparamount. Everything from raw chemicals to quartbottles is thoroughly tested to ensure it meets AMSOILquality parameters.

Part of the quality control process at AMSOILincludes filtering finished products before they arepackaged. AMSOIL has always filtered its products toa higher degree than industry standards mandate, andthe recent transfer of AMSOIL pro-duction facilities to the AMSOIL Centerprovided the perfect opportunity toincorporate even more advanced newfiltration technologies.

The ProblemIn order to keep up with demand,AMSOIL increased production capa-bilities at the AMSOIL Center by 250percent. The new system uses higherflow rates and increased pressures, and the filters used in the old systemcouldn’t hold up to the increaseddemands. AMSOIL turned to one ofits corporate partners for help.

The SolutionDonaldson is the leader in industrialfiltration technology. AMSOIL andDonaldson worked together to createa filter that would not only withstandthe flow rates and pressures inside theproduction lines, but provide AMSOIL-quality filtration as well. The solutioncame in the Donaldson HRK10 In-LineHydraulic Filter. The HRK10 providessuperior filtration along withunmatched durability.

Solid ConstructionAMSOIL installed 30 custom filterhousings specially built by Donaldsonto AMSOIL specifications. Theserugged, heavy-duty housings are allsteel and have a basket-like designthat ensures contaminants capturedby the filter remain in the filter, evenduring change-out. Other systems filterthe lubricant as it flows into the filterrather than on its way out, leaving the contaminants tocollect in the bottom of the housing. The DonaldsonHRK10 filter and housing are designed so that the lubri-cant flows from the inside of the filter to the outside,

keeping contaminants trapped inside. This allows thefilter to be removed from the housing with all of the con-taminants still intact.

The HRK10 filter housings are designed to with-stand pressures far greater than what they’ll face atAMSOIL. They are static burst rated to 500 psi, with flowranges to 300 gallons per minute.

Synthetic MediaThe Donaldson HRK10 features Donaldson syntheticSynteq™ filter media, the same media used in

Donaldson Endurance heavy-duty fil-ters. Synteq synthetic filter media hassmooth, rounded fibers for low resis-tance to flow while maintaining a highefficiency rate.

Impressive ResultsAMSOIL achieved all of its goalsthrough its partnership withDonaldson. The HRK10 filters aremore than capable of withstandingthe high flow rate and high pressuresfound in AMSOIL production lines. They also help the company meet itsstringent quality standards whilesimultaneously improving efficiencyand production capabilities.

“We were filtering to an industry-leading standard, now we’veimproved upon that and increasedproduction capabilities,” said AMSOILVice President of Operations ScottDavis. “We researched our optionsand found the Donaldson HRK10 tobe the best.”

While the service lives of the hous-ings are still being determined, thelives of the filter elements areextended to offset the price of theelement itself, a concept very familiarto AMSOIL Dealers.

“These filters last 1.6 times longerthan our old filters, which offsets theprice difference and ensures the cost-effectiveness of filtering AMSOIL syn-thetic lubricants to the highest quality,”said Davis. “We demand more of ourfiltration because AMSOIL customersexpect an AMSOIL-quality product.”

The Donaldson HRK10 filters andhousings allow AMSOIL to “polish” its lubricants onemore time before they are packaged and shipped. Thesystem of 30 HRK10 units ensures that AMSOIL syn-thetic lubricants are absolutely free of contaminants.

AMSOIL Lubricants Are “Polished” BeforeThey’re Packaged

High-tech Donaldson filters provide filtration beyond industry standards.

After 12 rounds of racing, Torco Racing Fuels/AMSOIL/Honda rider Kevin Windhamis within striking distance of his first career supercross championship since hestarted racing the senior circuit in 1998. His rookie teammate, Trey Canard, mightnot have to wait that long.

Windham gained some mid-season steam as points leader Chad Reed falteredand K-dub was able to take a pair of wins and close the gap to less than 20 points. His biggest dig into Reed’s lead came in Minneapolis. Windham took advantageof a Reed miscue in the final, pushing his Honda CRF 450R to his eighth podiumwith a third place finish. K-dub followed that up with a second place podium finishin Round 12 of the AMA Supercross Series in Toronto. For the year, Windham hasnot finished a race outside of the top five and was 20 points behind Reed with five

rounds left. “I’m happy with the way things have

been going,” said Windham after the Minneapolis race. “We made up somepoints the past couple of weeks, and we’ve got to look at the big picture. We’re closing in, and that feels good.”

In the Lites class, not even Trey Canard expected his professionalsupercross career to start the way it did, with the Oklahoman winning three of hisfirst four races. Canard kept his poiseafter a mid-pack start in Minneapolis andwas able to battle for a podium spotbefore finishing fourth. Despite his firsthiccup in the AMA East Coast Lites series,Canard still left Minneapolis with a 24-

point lead with only three mid-April rounds of racing left on the schedule.“Everyone wants to win a championship,” said Canard. “Now, winning a champi-

onship is realistic to me. But the championship is not over until St. Louis. As easy asit is to get a points lead, to lose it is twice as easy. I am not going to celebrate untilthe time comes. I’m just going to do my best. I’m going to give it all I’ve got.”

The 2008 AMA Supercross Series will wrap-up at Sam Boyd Stadium in Las Vegason May 3 with the East and West Coast riders facing off against one another.

Lovell Racing continued its two truck effort this year at the XRRA RockRace in Moab, Utah on March 22-23. Roger Lovell debuted his revampedAMSOIL Ford Ranger alongside his brother Brad Lovell’s recently con-structed Fabtech/AMSOIL Ford. The brothers went up against 40 of thenation’s top rock racers to see who would rise to the top.

Brad drew poorly and was forced to face the toughest course withoutthe benefit of watching others. The course had the usual jumps and rockclimbs, but also featured a massive boulder-lined trench.

“We flew through the jumps and rock climb, then tried to straddle thetrench,” recalls Brad. “In retrospect that was a bad idea. We got a tirecaught, tried to back up and rolled. It cost us six minutes.”

Roger, however, had better luck. He made short work of lane numberone, setting the fastest time.

“Doing 50 miles of this atKing of the Hammers thisspring really gave me theseat time to feel confidentbehind the wheel,” saidRoger. “We spent a day tuning the air shocks in the dunes and the truckfelt great.”

Roger marked another respectable time by raking the truck throughthe rock trench that claimed his brother and was sitting fifth. During thefinal race of the day, however, bad luck struck. The bell housing fractured, wedged itself against the flywheel and immediately disabled the truck.

Brad decided it was time to save the weekend. He started finding theright lines through the rocks and was shaving minutes, not seconds, offof the competition. At the end of regular racing, Roger’s misfortune

cleared room for Brad in the finals as the Fabtech/AMSOIL Ford slidinto sixth place and the final rounds of racing.

With no time to develop strategy, Brad suited up for two morerounds. In the first lane, he almost gave away a potential win as heovershot a double jump that cost precious time. His effort, however, was actually a second faster than his first run. Things went evenbetter in lane two with a well-paced, clean race. Brad finished the daywith a total time of 15:52 and the win, more than 40 seconds faster thansecond place.

“We came from last place to first place,” said Brad. “I am amazedby what this truck can do. It is blistering fast. I am exceptionallyproud of our team, sponsors and family for building this vehicle andgetting a win our second time out.”

ENERGY SURCHARGE PROGRAMDue to the volatility and unpredictable nature of the marketat this time, AMSOIL announced implementation of anenergy surcharge program in the April Action News as atemporary solution for recovering spiraling costs. Althoughreported correctly in the Direct Line and Hotwire, theAction News information regarding a 30-day notice for surcharge adjustments was incorrect. Until the marketstabilizes, the surcharge will remain in place and may beadjusted each month as costs dictate. A complete state-ment on the surcharge program is available in the “What’sNew” section of the Dealer Zone.
