The Directory contains communication details of 4288 R&D institutions in the Country. The maximum number of R&D institutions 846 (19.7%) are located in the State of Maharashtra. This is followed by Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Gujarat with 437 (10.2%), 404 (9.4%) and 375 (8.7%) respectively. In case of Central Sector the maximum number of R&D institutions 75 (12.3%) are located in the State of Delhi. This is followed by Maharashtra and Karnataka with 68 (11.1%) and 57 (9.3%) of total Central Sector R&D institutions respectively. The share of various sectors in total number of R&D institutions is: Central Government 14.2%, State Governments 21.4%, Higher Education Sector 6.6% Private Sector including Scientific & Industrial Research organizations 53.7% and Public Sector Industry including State Public Sector 4.5%. The Sector-wise and State-wise number of R&D organisations are as follows.
