April 1 - May 1: GALLERY A: The Bloom is On. Works of color

and pattern illuminated by the spring’s early light reveal an interest in the riot of springtime growth and the renewal of life in general.

GALLERY B: Between Two Worlds by Rob Goebel. Rob has introduced a new realm of abstract expressionism and action painting into his work. With gestural and aggressive brush strokes, he gives light to his rich and vibrant color palette. The paintings are colorful gestur-al abstractions of another reality with symbolic meaning of a dreamlike utopian state.

The Cabinet Art (see also Uptown/DC): April 11- June 3: JAMES LANDRY: CAR SERIES. Seen

from the taillights up, the shining red of a beautiful Mercury sends us into a western meadow with a mountain on the horizon roadtrip reverie, but wait, the red car parked between two others is parked up against a wall. The dichotomy of that shining red up against an idyllic mural says it all. Landry photographs with a painter’s eye. In his CAR SERIES, Landry’s cars double as compositional shapes that enhance or are enhanced by their environment. That Landry doesn’t manipulate, crop, or collage enhances the impact, which is at once wacky and somber, letting us laugh at ourselves and whatever idea we have of ‘reality.’ Also featuring Memory Music by Jim Landry, a book of the best from Landry’s 8-year blog, MusicFromTheFilm.blogspot.com.

Continuing: Baseball memorabilia and lin-ocuts. Full color catalogs of the international artist’s book Metropolis. Individual prints each in handmade portfolios available (see Dec issue).

The Cabinet Portfolio about Travel including Blankstein, Huff, Segnan, Strike, Stout, Unger, Vess and Zahn. Sculpted ceramic vessels, bead and copper necklaces, cards, gift certificates and fused glass.

Eleanor Kotlarik Wang, IN THE FLOW, March 30 through April 22.

These new works are rhythmic explorations of repetitive motions found in Tai Chi prac-tice. By observing and sensing the flow in her own daily practice, the artist interpreted the outer and inner physical energies of some of the movements. Her usage of line and color on canvas and paper culminate in a personal fusion of art, meditation and physical energy.

Kevin MacDonald: The Tension of a Suspended Moment An empty booth at a diner. The façade of a suburban cottage. Factory chim-neys outlined against a gray sky. These are just a few of the images rendered in color pencil, pastel, or oil paint by the artist Kevin MacDonald. For more than 30 years, MacDon-ald’s artwork found critical praise and popular acclaim in the Washington region and beyond.

Twisted Teenage Plot. Coinciding with a ret-rospective of Kevin MacDonald, the Alper Initiative for Washington Art presents Twisted Teenage Plot. Besides being an excellent art-ist, MacDonald also played in bands, most notably Twisted Teenage Plot. The exhibition will showcase visual artists who played in local bands in the late 70s and early 80s, Dick Bangham, Michael Baron, Jay Burch, Kim-Kane, Clark Vinson Fox (aka Michael Clark), Steve Ludlum, Michael McCall, JW Mahoney, Michael Reidy, Robin Rose, Judith Watkins Tartt, and Joe White, along with recordings, posters, videos, and memorabilia.

William Dunlap: Look At It - Think About It. Narrative is tricky business. Yet the telling of universal stories through art can bind us together and bring new, enhanced areas of

self-understanding. William Dunlap’s assem-blages of elements taken from his life, our lives, and the world around us reflect his sen-suous and infectiously energetic view of life.

Southern Constellations is the 3rd exhibition in Transformer’s four-part Do You Know Where Your Art Comes From? series presented in the Museum. It highlights the work of Elsewhere, a living museum and residency program set in a three-story former thrift store in Greens-boro, NC. It profiles the work of six artists and highlights their curatorial initiative to extend experimental practices and creative networks in the South.

Masters of Fine Art First Year and Thesis Exhi-bitions. The multidisciplinary Studio Art program showcases an exciting range of emerging artists’ works in painting, sculpture, collage and material studies, photography and new media. The First Year MFA exhibition will run from April 2-20 and feature Mills Brown, Aaron Eckstein, Yaroslav Koporulin, Jean Jinho Kim, Sarah Ellen Norman, Sarah O’Donoghue, Jen Noone, and Zarina Zuparkhodjaeva. Loriann Signori-Intimate Landscapes, April 5 -May 7.Signori’s landscapes, inspired by the Maryland hills and waters, are an intimate view of ephemeral beauty. Distinctive and serene Signori paints the landscape we feel, not see. Her compositions infer worldly objects–trees, fields, flowers, rivers, but only where their boundaries begin and end is open to interpretation.

Signori’s interpretive style allows the viewer to focus on the profound beauty of the landscape. Her paintings achieve their visual glow through a process that starts with an under painting. She first coats the surface with an analogous color or using gold leaf and lets it dry. She then applies colors by brush or uses her fingers to blend pastels in thin layers of transparent and opaque glazes. “That is where the method ends and the possibilities begin,” says Signori. The constant layering with wax medium or fixative allows her to build an opalescent surface. Each painting is a sensorial and emotional experience for Signori. Her work draws the viewer in and allows them to wander and wonder.

Waverly Street Gallery is one of the Washington DC Metro area's premier art galleries featuring contemporary visual artists working in a wide range of media. Gallery artists include painters, printmakers, sculptors, ceramic artists, photog-raphers and jewelers. Monthly exhibitions show-

Thru May 13: In Black and White, paintings by Wayson R. Jones. In this collection of several related but distinct bodies of work, Wayson R. Jones con- tinues his exploration of monochromaticism material, and scale. As he states, “I’m invested

in making images that evoke primal sorts of associations: horizon and sky, dwellings, and the human face. My goal is to create zones of energy in the picture plane in which masses of dark and light pulse against one another to create a sense of movement and event." With an eye toward the history of black paint- ings (e.g., Ad Reinhardt, Mark Rothko, Frank Stella, etc.) and the gestural boldness of Abstract Expressionism, Jones invites viewers to go beyond the immediate associations of black with mourning and evil intent, to encompass ideas of richness, mystery, and warmth.

American Impressionism: The Lure of the Artists’ Colony, thru April 24. This compre-hensive exhibition features, for the first time, one of the Reading Public Museum's greatest strengths—its collection of works by American Impressionists. The exhibition includes 50 oil paintings and nearly 20 works on paper dating from the 1880s through the 1940s. Outstanding landscapes—rang-ing from snow covered hills to sun filled harbors—seascapes, penetrating portraits, and remarkable still lifes, imbued with rich textures, reveal the artists’ interest in captur-ing effects of light and atmosphere in their work.

The exhibition is arranged according to the artists’ colonies that played a critical role in the development of American Impres-sionism, including those at Cos Cob and Old Lyme in Connecticut; Cape Cod, Cape Ann, and Rockport, in Massachusetts; New Hope and Philadelphia in Pennsylvania; Taos, New Mexico; and California. In addition, American expatriate artists such as Mary Cassatt and John Singer Sargent are examined.

Other leading artists of the movement include William Merritt Chase, Childe Hassam, Ernest Lawson, Julian Alden Weir, John Twachtman, Chauncey Ryder, Frank W. Benson, William Paxton, Abbott Thayer, Guy Wiggins, Charles Webster Hawthorne, Colin Campbell Cooper, Daniel Garber, and Edward Redfield, among others.
