Lets say that you are training for a certain race and your schedule calls for a 10 percent increase in mileage this week, yet youre feeling a little pain in your legs. How do you respond? Do you go ahead and follow the schedule, or do you change it? You know the right answer. Yet many runners insist on sticking to the printed training schedule, since they believe that any change will ruin their chances of running a good race. In fact, the opposite is true. You would benefit more by giving your body a chance to recover. Training schedules are built on the assumption that you arent experiencing any unusual pains before, during, or after the run. If pain or fatigue does strike, dont hesitate to change your workouts.

When people say bad things about you, you should avoid responding to what is said about you. As an old proverb says, if you engage yourself in mud-slinging, you will definitely end up making yourself dirty. Often people try to talk you into responding to their bad words, and in your attempt to match them word for word, you fall to their level. Dont fall into their trap. Just listen and pity such people. If they are even remotely right about what they are saying, then try to do a little bit of reflection over this. Then let your actions speak rather than allowing yourself to fall down to their level.

Experts say that you only need 20 to 30 minutes of modest physical activity three times a week to shape up your body. You can do it easily and you dont need to go to the gym. Climbing the stairs instead of riding the escalator counts. Briskly walking 10 minutes around the neighborhood, three times a day, satisfies your daily exercise requirement. Anything you do with pleasure that works up even a light sweat is exercise. Remember, if an activity is easy to perform, easy to fit into your schedule, and easy to love, youre more likely to stick with it.

Consciously and unconsciously, people tend to imitate those around them. Thats why the latest research shows that things like happiness, depression and obesity can spread like wildfires through social networks. So, surround yourself with friends who can also be role models. You can hang out with people who look and act the way you would like to. Social imitation is the easiest form of selfimprovement. Social support is critical to changing all kinds of behavior. Good friends can not only help you through bad times, but they can also help you stay focused on your goals.

Some of us put pictures of inspiring people or famous quotes from them on our walls. But what does that do for us if the inspirational person has done things we will never or could never do? For many of us, the choice of a role model invites comparison. If our abilities and outcomes do not match up with his or hers, the role model serves not as an inspiration but as a source of frustration and defeat. Choose as your role model someone who has accomplished something you want to achieve. There is tremendous value in using co-workers or family members rather than celebrities, whose experience has less in common with yours.

In a study, fitness tests were done to 46 inactive women divided into two groups. Regardless of how they had actually performed on the fitness test, members of one group were told they had scored in the highest of five levels of fitness, while the others were told their performance was poor. All the women were then asked to work out on stationary bikes. Those who had been told they had scored well on the fitness exam reported less fatigue than the women who believed they had done poorly on the fitness test. Although the study was small, its lesson is important: If you believe in your fitness potential, you are likely to live up to your own expectations.
