12 A MANUSCRIPT BY LORD ADAM GORDON.

return to London in November 1765. In the JJictionary of National .Biography it is stated that he took his regiment, the 66th, to Jamaica, and returned home l 76fi, having been "entrusted by the Florida (~) Colonists with a memorial of grievances to lay before the Secretary of State." Whether he was entrusted with a memorial or not does not appear in his note book, but that he may have undertaken to lay before the Secretary of State the grievances of the colonists of Boston is quite possible, and with the following extracts before us, gleaned from his notes, it seems vel'y probable that such might have been the case. Shortly before Lord Adam visited Boston the Stamp Duty came into operation and gave rise, he remarks, to "most flagrant acts of opposition,'' and "a riotous and licentious spirit in the mob broke out." Lord Adam further adds that " the better kind of people seem well bred and sensible, they lament their present plan of government which throws too much weight into the popular Reale ... After all, it would appear as if nothing but a thorough alteration of their Charter and form of government . . . would operate effectually." 'fhe only other observations of political interest contained in the manuscript are under the heading "Some thoughts relative to Canada, as it appeared affected in 1765." These "thoughts," although of some value, and especially flattering to the Canadians of that period, must be omitted here, as quite outside the scope of the Genealogist, nor do they in any way indicate a solution of the statement in the Dictionary of Naciona! Biography.

Before giving the transcript alluded to, which has been supplemented with a few fragmentary notes, from original sources when not otherwise stated, and which American genealogists will doubtless be able to con siderably augment, it may not be considered out of place to epitomize briefly the career of the author, to whom we are indebted for the original.

Lord Adam Gordon, fourth son of Aiexander, 2n'1 Duke of Gordon, and Lady Henrietta his wife, daughter of the celebrated Earl of l>eterborough, was born about 1726. He represented Aberdeenshire in Parliament from 1754 to 1761, and again from 1761 to 1768; also sat for Kincardineshire from 177 4 till 17 80. His first commission in the army, dated at Lintzburg 18 Sept. 17 43, was to a Cornetcy in the North British Dragoons, now the Scots Greys. On 3rd Sept. 17 45 he was promoted Lieutenant to "ye Independ" Company of Foot to be forth with raised for our service," and on 30th Sept. in the following year got his Company in the Foot Regiment commanded by Brigadier-General James Fleming. In the same ye.ar, December 12th, he was given a Company in the Royal Regiment of Foot of Ireland (Royal Irish) commanded by his cousin-german, Brigadier General John Mordaunt. He was also "Captain-Lieutenant," commission dated 2 Jan. 17 56, in the Srd Regt. of Foot Guards (Scots Guards) with rank of Lieut.-Colonel, and Captain in the same Regiment 1st June following. In 1758, he served with General Edward Bligh on the Coast of France when Cherbourg was captured. On 16th April 1764 he sailed from Cowes in command of the 66th Regiment, now the Princess Charlotte of Wales' (Royal Berkshire), to which command he had been appointed 19th Jan. 1763, arriving at Jamaica 18th June following, having touched at Madeira, Antigua and St. Christophers. From Jamaica he sailed for America, arriving at the various places mentioned in the transcript,

at the dates given with the names of those places. His tour ended 13th Oct. 1765, when he embarked at New York in the "Hariot Packet," which arrived at Falmouth 11th November following. On 27th December 1775, he was appointed Colonel of the 26th Regiment, or Cameronians ; l 777 August :!9th he was promoted to Lieutenant General ; 1778 was made Governor of Tynemouth Castle; 9 May l 782 was appointed Colonel of the 1st Regiment of Foot, or Royals as they were then called, but now the Royal Scots, which command he held till his death. From 1789 to 1798 he was Commande1·-iu-Chief of the Forces in Scotland ; 12th Oct. 1793 was promoted to General; and in 1796 was made Governor of Edinburgh Castle. He died 13th August 1801 without issue, having married, 2nd Sept. 1767, Jane, daughter of John Drummond of Megginch, Perthshire, whose first husband was James, 2nd Duke of Atholl (who died in 1764). By a Trust Disposition executed at the Abbey of Holyroodhonse 20th )larch 1795, and registered at Edinburgh 25th August 1801, he appointed Cosmo Gordon of Cluny, one of the Barons of the Court of Exchequer in Scotland, Hobert Barclay Alardyce of Urie, Major Ninian Imrie of the Royals, Sir William James Cockburn, Baronet and Captain in the Royals, Charles Gordon of Braid, and Francis Anderson, ,vriter to the Signet, his Trustees, to whom he disponed his towns and lands of Easter and Wester Woodtown and mill thereof, the town and lands of Knoity, Burn and Crofts of Braeside of Woodtown, Bilbo, and Housie or Queenzie with the loch of Woodtown, all lying in the parish of Fettercairn, Kincardineshire; also that portion of the barony of Arnhall called the Burn, formerly possessed by Robert Carnegie, tenant therein, in the parish of Fettercairn ; as well as all lands, etc., in Scotland, England, America or elsewhere, in trust to sell to pay debts, funeral charges, etc., as also a bequest made by his deceased mother Henrietta, Duchess of Gordon, in favour of certain '\yidows .. The residue to be paid by his said Trustees to Mr. Henry Castleman, of the Drawing Room in the Tower of Loudon, and Elizabeth, his wife, and to the survivor of them, and after their death to their children.

Administration of the foregoing was granted 22 Dec. 1801 to Henry Castleman, Esq., the lawful attorney of Niuian Imrie, Charles Gordon, and Francis Anderson, the surviving executors, then in N. Britain. On 19 May 1806 Administration was granted to James Chalmer, Esq., lawful Attorney of the said three executors, the said Henry Castleman having died. (P.C.C.)
