Learning objectives

What might we mean by ‘the Church’?

In what ways is the Church important to Christians?

What are the roles of the parish church and the cathedral?

How do the design and furnishings of an Anglican church reflect Christian belief?

The parish church

The Anglican Church is organized into dioceses – areas centred on a cathedral and under the care of a bishop.

In turn, these dioceses are divided up into parishes – smaller districts which are served by a vicar stationed at a local (or parish) church. Lanhydrock Church in Cornwall

The parish church

Until midway through the 20th Century the parish church was the centre of community life. Almost

everyone attended church on a weekly basis, and lots of social activities were run by the church or took place on

church premises.

Try asking some older people in your neighbourhood about their memories

of the parish church.

The parish church

Nowadays church attendance has fallen, and the parish church no longer occupies

such a prominent place in the community as a whole. But to Christians the parish church

has retained its importance as a centre for worship and a place to meet others with shared religious beliefs.

Can you suggest some reasons for the decline in church attendance?
