Preface

A large number of students face great difficulty in understanding , analyzing , and appreciating American poetry. American Poetry is not difficult to understand , once we grasp the quintessential characteristics of its special diction , and its grammatical peculiarities . Once we achieve that , we will find it easy to understand , analyze , and appreciate a poem.

In the part which discusses history of poetry , I tried to give representative and carefully chosen poems of the different phases. They are well-known poems which I liked and enjoyed , I hope that you will enjoy them too , and that they will instill in you a love of American Poetry.

The American Poetry A Detailed History of America:

America was discovered by the Italian sailor , Christopher Columbus in 1492 by

coincidence , i.e., he was unaware of such a discovery . The word "America" is derived from

the Italian word "Amergo" . The Puritans emigrated from England , their country , due to the

fact that they were persecuted in England , to the new land which was America so as to set up

their ideal Republic or Utopia in God's land which was America . People went to America in

order to achieve their power, treasure, and fame. The Africans or the black people were slaves

in America and they worked in the field of agriculture, while the white ones were not .In

America, there was an immense number of colonies which were possessed by the British

people .However, America was neglected for a while after Columbus' discovery of it until the

presence of Americo Dispotshy. He was the first man who drew the world's attention towards

America's treasures and untouched lands . America , notably, got its name from the name of

that man (Dispotshy) who can be regarded as its real and factual discoverer rather than

Columbus .

America is a new land in the world. Its civilization and literature are recent just by

two hundred years (1776). America is regarded as a compound of different and various

cultures and dreams, so it is called "Melting Pot"; this is during a certain stage of its history.

Also America is called "Mosaic" or Salad Bowl but in another stage. In the primary stage of

the American history, America was considered as the melting pot, this means that all those

different races which immigrated to America with various, different dreams, values,

traditions and goals melted in this pot which is America .So, America is like a pot and

everyone comes to it from another country or borough is melted in this pot and then, they

[anyone comes to it] become a part of a whole. But, the other two definitions stand for

another stage in its history which is a recent one. In this stage, America is known as a

Mosaic or Salad bowl. This means that the conditions in America are like the salad bowl

which means that all who choose America as a new country choose to be a part of a whole of

the American body, yet nowadays, the new comers keep their own characteristics and

identity.

As to the struggle between England and the new Americans, England realized

and admitted the great importance and richness of America. It began to impose high taxes

on the Americans; also, to put the American political affairs under its control. As a result,

many violent and hostile actions against England were waged. Finally, America got its

independence from the great Empire; England in the year 1776. America has fertile and

rich lands which were untouched lands .The settlers came to America by the start of the

seventeenth century. During that time, America was settled and inhabited only by the

Native Americans. Then, America received the first group of new comers who were

Portogals, the Spanish people who explored Florida. But, the important new settlers were

the English puritans who influenced the early stage of the American historical period.

The American puritans are the people whom ancestors are the English puritans who made a great escapade from England to emancipate themselves from religious persecution. They come to England and called it "New England". They came to this new land with the American dream of equality turned to slavery, freedom turned to racial discrimination and money turned to capitalism. Puritans were not enslaved or suffered from racial discrimination, but they were affected by the corrupted milieu around them. The old English puritan was such a person who honored God above all and under God gave everyone his due. His first care was

to serve God and therein he did not do what was good in his own but in God's sight. Making the word of God the rule of his worship. The puritans believed that sanctity ran in families and that godly parents were likely than ungodly ones to produce godly children. They lived in small houses near each other. Thus, the small physical size of households forced family members to repress feelings of anger or frustration towards one another. This subdue generated some psychological problems punished severely and many people suffered from the rigid rules of Puritanism.

The concept of Puritanism means a very fanatic group in the affairs of religion;

namely, Christianity. This company or group believes in hard work in their first life, i.e.,

they deem of the original Sin of Adam and Eve; namely, eating from the forbidden tree and

by such an act, they disobeyed God's orders .So; they think that life is a period of true

repentance and salvation from the original Sin of Adam and Eve. Thus, they deem that Man

is born as a sinner owing to that sin , and he should manipulate his first life in true worship

and repentance . So, life is a span of time to work hard and to repent so as to go to Eden in

the hereafter. In the afterlife, there will be blessings, luxury, mercies and immortality.

The first appearance for what is known as Puritanism was a kind of religious

movements to purify and improve the church affairs, but later on they represent a branch of

Christianity . During the age of Queen Elizabeth I, there was a sort of religious freedom and

therefore they practiced their creed and faith freely, but afterwards, they faced many troubles

. So , those big problems which they faced and lived in England such as persecution and

religious bigotry encouraged them to immigrate to America and establish their first colony .

They were led by Captain John Smith and settled in a place called James Tower.

The puritans , in their migration to America , were called pilgrims because they

were looking for a new world . They wanted to set up their own ideal Republic. Also , they

called America the New Jerusalem since it was the real birth and beginning of Christianity ,

the new land where they will practice their religion with an absolute freedom . There is

another company of new comers who were the English merchants . England encouraged the

English merchants to go to America , they promised the merchants with new and huge lands

for tea crops . They called America as the "Vale of Plenty" for its rich and untouchable

lands . But , those merchants settled in the southern part of America .Then , they needed

workers to work for them . The black people who were in America worked as slaves to those

merchants .

The puritans deem of predestination that Man's destiny is predetermined before his

birth . So , they say that Man has no choice and everything is out of his volition . Salvation

means that God selects some certain people apart from their work and makes them enter

Heaven peacefully and they are called the "chosen people" such as Jesus Christ who was

crucified to redeem humanity . Therefore , Man has no selection in Paradise or Hell .The

puritans regarded themselves as the chosen people to be saved and rescued . America is

known as the new world because it embodies the dreams of everyone , i.e., for everyone ,

America is the new land where they can get their absolute freedom and attain all their

dreams and subjective . Despite the different and various traditions , values and points

among people , America stands for everyone as the new world where every dream can turn

to be a reality.

As for the several literary stages in America , first , in the colonial period [1620-1776] ,

the Americans had just religious sermons and autobiographical writings to record their

history and help the new comers learn their habits , traditions and instructions . Only the

religious poetry was predominant in America during the Puritan Era . Concerning the

American literature , in the early beginning and with its hash conditions , there were just two

kinds of literature : first , the religious sermons which were the sole kind of writing during

the early days of America . Second , the writings of autobiographies by which the writers

wanted to form a new and private history .

The term , "colonial period" refers to the initial of the American history and the

literary conditions during such a stage . Also , it refers to the period from the 1620 to 1776 .

During that period , America was just a company of colonies. There were several features

which characterized the literary conditions during those days. Furthermore , during the

colonial period , there was no room for dramas or theaters . All those things were neglected

and rejected strictly by the puritans who deemed that drama is an evil work . So , the only

literary form which appeared during that period was the religious poetry . During that

period , most of the writers' writings , specially poetry were marked and charged with

Individualism.

Concerning the ideas in America during the colonial period, there were the concepts

of Individualism and of Democracy . That is, Individualism means self-independence or

reliance , and it was significant at that time because the land was primitive and they were in an

urging need to cultivate it by hard work and self-efforts . This idea became important

whenever the Puritans have no indecisiveness to depend on themselves in all their own affairs

instead of being dependents on their priests and monks. Democracy means liberty or

freedom . They hoped and wished to be free in all their life and to be foot looses in doing

anything in life without any restrictions .Besides , there was the concept of Hardship that was

one of the ideas that appeared during that period and affected literature .

There were two reasons which stand behind the appearance of this idea . First , to

carry out a new life in such a primitive environment , it was a challenge for the new comers ,

so they were in a bad need to work hard and fight for achieving their targets and dreams .

Second , because this idea was related to the puritans and their gloomy vision about life , they

were in a way fanatic group that they believed that they are sinners and bear Adam's sin

forever. So , life for them was just a short span of time to repent and there is no place for fun

or enjoyment .In accordance with them , they do not deserve such things because of their

belief of being sinners . So , they wanted to work hard as a kind of repentance and salvation .

As for the way of life and subjective relations during that period , through their new

experience in the new world , they needed to assist each other ; they needed to establish new

rules, customs and traditions for their new community .For example , Anne Bradstreet's

"Contemplations" is the sole poem that all features of the puritans appeared in during the

colonial period .

Notice carefully

-The American Dream:The American dream is an American social idea . This idea stresses on the human

equality, liberty and material prosperity . This dream began with the great wave of migration which took place at the time of the English Civil War . Those puritans , who first reached America , thought that America was a chance offered to them by God to commence a new life where people can enjoy freedom , equality and welfare . This idea of the American dream is distinctly mouthpieced in poetry . For example , Ralph Waldo Emerson tackles this idea in his poems . But , in the course of time , this dream turned into a nightmare as people thought that they were free to do whatever they wanted . Also , those people advocated freedom and meanwhile , they supported the idea of bondage ; they wanted to be free , but they limited the freedom of others . Another paradox is that although the puritans believed that America is a chance offered to them by God , they believed that all people including themselves are sinners . In a sense , the American dream of a new Heaven on earth turned into a nightmare of corruption and evil.

-Puritanism :

This English religious movement began in England . The puritans wanted to spend

their life in God's service because they believe that life is not for pleasure and joy due to the

original Sin of Adam and that they are sinners. They believed that those who will be saved

were those who served God and spent their life in His true worship . The puritans were

oppressed and persecuted by the king of England because they said that they are equal

people ; they did not believe in the hierarchal order , but in equality and that was not

accepted. They , as a result , left England and went to America and they were the first

settlers . They went to America as it was a free land where they can practice their religion

without any king or class ; that is , freely. Anne Bradstreet , in her "Contemplations" voices

all these objects and sense of nostalgia for the old land.

-The Puritans:

The American puritans ware the people whom ancestors ware the English puritans who made an escapade from England to emancipate themselves from religious persecution. The sinner in this community was punished severely and many people suffered from the rigid rules of Puritanism.

-Nationalism(anti-colonialism)-Americanism=equality=freedom):

Those who were born in America have the new sense of nationalism . They wanted

to rid or free themselves from England and they believed in a free country . They do not like

the idea of being possessed by England {the mother land}.For instance , Emerson inherited

that feeling of nationalism in his poem , "Self-Reliance". He did not like the idea of America

to belong to any other country . So , the American Revolution happened and they were no

longer colonials . Also, the same idea is found in Robert Frost's poetry . He was talking

about the emotional colonialism . Also , the idea of nationalism is found in Philip Freneau's

"The Rising Glory of America".

-Realism (Modernism):

It was a movement in the theater and drama during the last quarter of the 19th

century such as Shaw's Heartbreak House . It represents a reaction against Romanticism and

its playwrights. It aimed at replacing superhuman of the heroes of romantic drama .

-Symbolism:It is the use of expressions that represent certain ideas . A short concrete symbol is

found to be convenient substitute for ideas , particularly abstractions . A symbol may simplify a thought and expresses it more picturesquely . Besides being used directly in this way , symbolism is the basis of much figurative language . For example , the agony of grief might be symbolized in the language that appeals not only to understanding , but also to our imagination in the sense of poetry .

-Afro-Americans:

They liked the idea of the free democratic and freedom , but they did not get it .

They did not feel the same nationalism and that America is the land of freedom . They

lacked the idea of liberty . In other words , there was a racial bias . That is to say , those

Africans were slaves and therefore s they did not have deal of equality or liberty.

American poets with sample poems-Anne Bradstreet

She was an American poetess who was born in England and emigrated with her father , Thomas Dudley , and her husband , Simon Bradstreet in 1630 , settling first at Ipswich then in north Andover , Massachusetts. She had eight children. Her poems were published in London without her knowledge in 1650. In addition , her work was highly praised in her own time as the first woman to publish her work with her real name. her later and shorter poems are now more highly regarded than her longer philosophical ones. She has received much attention both as a woman writer and as the first poetess of the new world. Her contemplations is a distinguished poem among her writings.

"Contemplations"(1)

Some time now past in the autumnal tide , When Phoebus wanted but one hour to bed ,

The trees all richly clad , yet void of pride , Were gilded o'er by his rich golden head.

Their leaves and fruits seemed painted , but was true , Of green , of red , of yellow , mixed hue :

Rapt were my senses at this delectable view.(2)

I wist not what to wish , "Yet sure," thought I , "If so much excellence abide below , How excellent is He that dwells on high.

Whose power and beauty by His works we know ? Sure He is goodness , wisdom , glory , light ,

That hath this under world so richly dight : More heaven than earth was here , no winter and no

night."(4)

Then higher on the glistering sun I gazed ,Whose beams was shaded by the leafy tree ;The more I looked the more I grew amazed ,And softly said , "What glory's like to thee ?

Soul of this world , this universe's eye , No wonder some made thee a deity ;

Had I not better known , alas , the same had I.

(5) "Thou as a bridegroom from thy chamber rushes

And as a strong man , joys to run a race , The morn doth usher thee with smiles and blushes ,

The earth reflects her glances in thy face.Birds , insects , animals , with vegetive.

Thy heart from death and dullness doth revive : And in the darksome womb of fruitful nature dive.

Hath strength thy shining rays once to behold ?And is thy splendid throne erect so high

As to approach it can no earthly mould ? How full of glory then must thy Creator be , Who gave this bright light luster unto thee :

Admired , adored forever , be that majesty !"

And how their precepts to their sons were law , How Adam sighed to see his progeny , Clothed all in his black sinful livery ,

The Poem in briefThis long poetic work is a typical puritan poem. Anne Bradstreet , in this poem , makes a

persistent meditation to nature. She contemplates it in her new milieu ; namely , new England. Then , she employs such contemplations as tools to glorify the great creator who made the fascinating nature.

-Philip Freneau Freneau is the poet of the American revolution as he is one of the factors which

stimulated the Americans to revolt against Britain seeking independence. His first collection of verse was poems and was followed by various volumes of essays and poems. His verse ranged from the satirical and patriotic to writings such as the wild honey suckle to a nature poem of delicacy and sensitivity. His the rising glory of America stands among his distinguished poems.

''The Rising Glory of America''Being part of a Dialogue pronounced on a public occasion.

Now shall the adventurous muse attempt a themeMore new , more noble , and more flush of fame

Than all that went before –Now through the veil of ancient days renew

The period famed when first Columbus touched

These shores so long unknown–through various toils ,Famine , and death , the hero forced his way

Through oceans pregnant with perpetual storms .And climates hostile to adventurous man.This is the land , of every joyous sound ,

Of liberty and life , sweet liberty !A race shall hear of us as thing remote ,

That blossomed in the morn of days–Indeed ,How could I weep that we exist so soon ,

Just in the dawning of these mighty times ,Whose scenes are painting for eternity !

Dissentions that shall swell the trump of fame ,And ruin hovering o'er all monarchy !

And when a train of rolling years are past ,(So sung the exiled seer in Patmos isle)

Earth's curse before : the lion and the lambIn mutual friendship linked , shall browse the shrub ,

Another Jordan's stream shall glide along ,And Siloah's brook in circling eddies flow ;

Groves shall adorn their verdant banks , on whichThe happy people , free from toils and death ,

The Poem in briefIt is a nationalistic poem. Freneau's purpose is to glorify America as a country. He wrote

many poems which are considered a propaganda of America , the new land. Freneau is one of the creators of the creators of the American dream of equality , freedom and money. The poem is an embodiment of this dream ; its main theme is the greatness of America. It is written in the epic style.

-Walt WhitmanHe is one of the prominent literary figures of the American poetry of the nineteenth

century. His collection , leaves of grass , is distinguished with vehemence of pride and boldness of freedom as he attempts to loosen the mind of still – to – be – for med America from the restrictions , superstitions and long clinging to the anti – democratic authorities of Europe.

(1)I celebrate myself ,

And what I assume you shall assume ,For every atom belonging to me as good belongs to you .

I loafe and invite my soul ,I lean and loafe at my ease .. observing a spear of summer grass.

Houses and rooms are full of perfumes … the shelves are

crowded with perfumes ,I breathe the fragrance myself , and know it and like it ,

The distillation would intoxicate me also , but I shall not let it .The atmosphere is not a perfume ….. it has no taste of the distillation….it is

odorless ,It is for my mouth forever ….. I am in love with it ,

I will go to the bank by the wood and become undisguised and naked ,

I am made for it to be in contact with me .The smoke of my own breath ,

The sniff of green leaves and dry leaves , and of the shore anddarkcolored sea–rocks , and of hay in the barn ,

The sound of the belched words of my voice … words loosed tothe eddies of the wind ,

green stuff woven .Or I guess it is the handkerchief of the Lord ,

A scented gift and remembrancer designedly dropped ,Bearing the owner's name someway in the corners , that we may

see and remark , and say Whose ?Or I guess the grass is itself a child … the produced babe of the

vegetation.Or I guess it is a uniform hieroglyphic ,

And it means , Sprouting alike in broad zones and narrow zones ,Growing among black folks as among white .

Kanuck , Tuckahoe , Congressman , Cuff , I give them the same ,I receive them the same.

And now it seems to me the beautiful uncut hair of graves.At home on Canadian snowshoes or up in the bush , or with

fishermen off Newfoundland ,At home in the fleet of iceboats , sailing with the rest and taking ,

At home on the hills of Vermont or in the woods of Maine or

the Texan ranch ,Comrade of Californians …. comrade of free nortwesterners ,

loving their big proportions ,Comrade of raftsmen and coalmen–comrade of all who shake

hands and welcome to drink and meat ;A learner with the simplest , a teacher of the thoughtfulest ,

A novice beginning experient of myriads of seasons ,Of every hue and trade and rank , of every caste and religion ,Not merely of the New World but of Africa Europe or Asia …

a wandering savage ,A farmer , mechanic , or artist ….. a gentleman , sailor , lover or

quaker ,A prisoner , fancy–man , rowdy , lawyer , physician or priest .

I resist anything better than my own diversity ,And breathe the air and leave plenty after me ,

And am no stuck up , and am is my place .The moth and the fisheggs are in their place ,

The suns I see and the suns I cannot see are in their place .The palpable is in its place and the impalpable is in its place.

(24)Walt Whitman , an American , one of the roughs , a Kosmos ,Disorderly fleshy and sensual .. eating drinking and breeding ,

No sentimentalist .. no stander above men and women or apartfrom them …... no more modest than immodest.

Unscrew the locks from the doors !Unscrew the doors themselves from their jambs !

Whoever degrades another degrades me ….. and whatever is doneor said returns at last to me ,

And whatever I do or say I also return .Through me the afflatus surging and surging ….. through me the

current and index .I speak the password primeval … I give the sign of democracy ;

By God ! I will accept nothing which all cannot have theircounterpart of on the same terms.

The Poem in briefIn "Song of Myself" , Whitman stresses the idea of individualism to stimulate in the

American people the spirit of independence. Furthermore , in this poem , he stresses on that he is one of the American individuals who enjoy democracy on the American land he states that America is the land of equality as it grows among black folks as among white. Therefore , it is the land of both equality and individualism as every atom belonging to me as good belongs to you. Notice :

Note the difference between the concept of America as shown in Freneau's the rising glory of America and Whitman's song of myself.

-Ralph Waldo EmersonEmerson is an American philosopher and poet , born in Boston and educated at Harvard.

Emerson embarked on a career as lecturer , evolving the new religious concept of transcendentalism which is found as a written expression in his essay "Nature" : "Nature is the incarnation of thought". The world is the mind presented. This form of mystic idealism and Wordsworthian reverence for nature was immensely in American life and thought Emerson was one of the founders of what is called the "American transcendentalism" in new England. The member of this movement clings to idealist system of thought which is based on a belief in the importance of the consolidation of all creation that man is good by nature and supremacy of insight over lore.

''Self–Reliance'' Henceforth , please God , forever I forego

The yoke of men's opinions. I will beLight–hearted as a bird , and live with God.

I find him in the bottom of my heart ,I hear continually his voice therein.

This poem is an invitation to the individual to relinquish materialism and rationalism and cling to spiritualism. It asserts the fact that god , priest and the church exist inside the individual. If the individual succeeded to make this his self , he would be transcendentalised and goes beyond nature and absorb the universe. Emerson wants to convey through this poem that individuals are the Americans who develop society. Thus , human spiritual renewal comes from the individual experience within society. This individual spiritualism is part of the individual soul. This divine soul is presented in the entire creation and living things.

The ethnic problem of blacks and Arabs in American poetry:For centuries , The United States has been home to ethnic groups who had emigrated from

their native lands in search of a better living. As for the Negroes , they were brought by force to America , because they were slaves from Africa. In modern times , each ethnic group has preserved its original identity , while at the same time attempting to be American . thus , there were black Americans , Chinese Americans , Arab Americans.

1) Langston Hughes : He is a black poet and dramatist who expressed the joys and miseries of the ordinary black

man in America. He was part of the Harlem Renaissance and was known during his lifetime as the poet laureate of Harlem. 1 -His "I , Too , Sing America" :

In this poem , Hughes tackles the issue of racial discrimination that ended , since in the meantime the blacks have become a part of American society. In this , he asserts the identity of the blacks not as persecuted minority , but as free Americans. This theme is based on the liberal Harlem movement , which called for the rights of Negroes to be treated as full American citizens. In addition , the title of the poem introduces the theme. "I, Too" means that the blacks also sing:" sing America". In other words , they feel their national identity as Americans. Hens in the second line , Hughes asserts that he is the "darker brother" , as he acknowledges the fraternity between the blacks and other Americans. However , there is a note of persecution in they send me to the kitchen / when company comes. Yet , Hughes makes fun of this discrimination that was only in the past by explaining how he laughs and eats well. Also , he grows strong. The word strong predicts the new position of the blacks who will find their rightful place in the American society. This prediction is emphasized by the use of the

adverb tomorrow and the future tense. To add to the future power of the blacks, he finally describes himself beautiful and asserts that he is America. In other words , the blacks have become part of society.

Another Poem“The Negro speaks of rivers”

In this poem , Hughes makes use of rivers to assert the identity of the blacks. They are a universal race. They go back to ancient history , to the Euphrates when dawns and to the Nile in the age of the pyramids. The reference to the hut near the Congo , which he built , adds to the expanse of geography as well as time. There is also reference to the Mississippi river in the days of Abraham Lincoln. There fore , the poem narrows down to America , and specifically at the time when Lincoln freed the blacks from slavery. This gives the blacks from slavery. This gives the blacks a definite American identity , but this identity has been prepared for by other rivers. The blacks may be Americans , but they are an ancient and proud race.

3-His "Being a good Americani : This poem provides a panoramic view of the boring , emotionless and machine – like life in

America. While he makes fun of this life system , he expresses hin nostalgia for his homeland in Palestine and the "Olive trees." In this sense , turkey preserves his Arab identity by keeping to the Arabic transliteration Americani instead of American. Also , he presents American society as machine – like by mentioning the emotionless routine of the day. For example , he "painted the kitchen table" , "talked to a neighbor and ate French fries. The long list of routine life is summed up in "I had my life , figured out cold for me."

Therefore, a good American is a sarcasm of American society , and by "desperately" trying to be a good Americani highlights the difficulty of being a machine. The irony is that it is only in his dreams that he is able to be himself , and to remember his Arab identity : he thinks about "Palestine and olive trees." The last sentence the place I came from refers to his yearning for his Arab roots.

Conclusion to the above–mentioned ideas : According to the American critic Mathew Regan in his the American other ethnic poetry of

This poem shows how modem man is imprisoned by civilization even when he is admist a natural setting. In this poem, frost uses nature to reflect the ambiguities of life. It is a still, quiet evening in the forest, and there is the sense of solitude , for it is dark and the speaker is alone. This relates to the romantic loneliness of the speaker in Nature to calm God's creation. The speaker notices that the woods are lovely , dark and deep. This also manifests the romantic perception of nature as beautiful and the source of absolute truth. With this , the snow that is filling the woods may stands for innocence and purity. This is because the woods are removed from the corrupting influences of civilization. The darkness points , in turn , to a spiritual experience , since physical and material reality is switched off. In other words , the darkness is opposed to what Wordsworth in intimations of immortality has called the light of common day.

In ‘’Fire and Ice’’, frost uses the romantic approach of using nature to express truths. However, the truth which he expresses relates to the modernist's skepticism about progress as an absolute. In the first two lines of the poem , frost expresses two different views in modern times of how the world will end. The first is by fire ; that is , the fear , felt since the first world war and much increased by the second world war and the cold war. These wars will destroy mankind due to scientific progress. Thus, the word progress becomes an ironic term. The

second way in which the world will end is by ice. This is the scientific prediction that the sun will eventually lose its heat as a result, the world will freeze.

Frost uses the traditional satire of the eighteenth century to express his view of how the world will end. It will end by fire or war. The satire is in the line from what I have tasted of desire. The word desire refers to the ambitions that have led to the destructive wars in modern times. The pronoun "I" is the pivot on which the satire hinges. It is as though he is expressing his personal experience , but he is voicing the dangerous vice of the age to which he is actually opposed.

From lines five onwards, frost uses the modernist techniques of ambiguity. He says that if the world would perish again, he would prefer ice. However, "ice" here is given a twist in meaning. It does not refer to the scientific prediction but to hate in "I think I know enough of hate." Thus, "ice" means "fire". Since the world cannot perish twice , the message is that the world will end in a destructive war. It will not wait for the scientific prediction to come true. Science in this case is worthless.

The role of the Arab American Women / The children of Mahjar as women poets:

The Arabs who immigrated to America were mostly from the Levant. They had no difficulties in blending into American society, which was conceived as a melting – pot. However, in the 1960s, the Arab – Israeli conflict became a world issue. The Arabs in America, especially the second and the third generations, were thus reminded that they were Arabs. With this began the issue of identity which began to crystallize in the 1970s as part of the question of ethnic identity. For by then America was no longer considered a melting–pot but a "salad bowl". After the gulf war in 1991, there was the dehumanization of Arabs , and the threat to the Arabs was maximized.

Furthermore, if the Arab women were seen as terrorists, Arab women were considered victims. For example, there is a poem entitled from within the circles of freedom by the Palestinian poetess Lisa Suhair Majaj who was born to a Palestinian father and an American mother. She has expressed determination to speak fully as an American , and as an Arab as well , not , as she put it , "Merely half of one thing and half of another , but both at once. Women in her poem are the ethnic Arab Americans. The Arab woman is treated with condescendence and as a brain washed person. In actuality, the image of women is politicized. In her poem , the image of the grandmother is important because she stands for the origin. The grandmother prepares the food which is a symbol of culture. In addition , Lisa Majaj decides

to adopt an Arab name , but she cannot read the Arabic script. She already has an American identity through her name, "Lisa". In another poem entitled "recognized futures" , she expresses her longing for the other part of herself. Ironically , although she has always been comfortable with her American name , she is seeking her Arab identity. Therefore , she has a split identity , since she is half – American , half – Arab. Yet, she is still looking for the evening star through the Palestinian night. Besides , D.H. Melhem is the daughter of Syrian immigrants , and she was born in Brooklyn. Like Suhair , she is Arab – American. In her poem "Say French", she wants to explain her history. She is aware of her own race and stereotype, while the immigration officers are perplexed by exotics. The poem is sarcastic because when she told the officer that she is Syrian , he was confused , and so it is Say French. Also , the poem tackles racial discrimination based on cultures. She predicts the future by explaining how her children will hate them because they are the enemies. There is again the quest for identity when Melhem explains how she must find (her) lost family , and she expresses a defiant tone when she poses a rhetorical question : "Why must they kill us?"

Also , there is the Egyptian poetess Pauline Kaldas who tries to find her own identity. In her Exotic , the title refers to the culture of the non westerners. In other words , the filling in an application , she finds a square edge for white that includes people from north Africa and the middle east. She refuses to be categorized as white because she still preserves her Egyptian identity. In this connexion , there is the reference to falafel , baklava and basboosa which are mainly Arab dishes. She tries to describe her physical appearance to prove that she is not white. For instance , her breasts are not white. In actuality , when the word exotic is applied to women , it has an extra connotation of sexual history. Thus , at the end , she refuses to fill in the box and she puts "X".

Another Arab American poetess is the Palestinian Suhair Hammad who wrote a poem after the terrorist attack on America on September 11th the poem is entitled first writing since in which she describes the feeling of hatred for the Arabs after this incident. She is writing a week after this incident , and she wonders why the terrorists did the suicide operation. She expresses her own fears for her sister. She prays to god that her brothers will not be harmed , because the Americans do not differentiate between Indians , Afghanis and Muslims. At the end of the poem , she is surprised to hear the announcer says that he feels good about throwing a bomb on Arab countries. She is only looking for peace. She ends the poem with the declaration to all the world that we're not had people she does not want any country to support the transgression of America.

The Black Liberation Movement: The 1960s was the decade of the black liberation movement. It was marked by activism

and political violence in open confrontation with the whites. The dominant theme of the liberation movement was black power. The black theatre helped to spread the idea of liberation , because it was in direct contact with the people. It was also experimental , using new techniques and treating new subjects about the black identity.

Black American poetry was also in the forefront of the liberation movement. In "Numbers, letters" by Imamu Amiri Baraka , for example , there is the assertion of the black identity in a defiant tone. He says that "Black is beautiful", expressing the current. Emphasis on blackness. Baraka also reverse4s the stereotype image of the whites : He says that white is the color of death by changing the role of colors , Baraka has in fact reversed the criteria of judgment. Pan–Africanism appeared in the 1960s as part of the liberation movement. It insisted on the similarities between all the different groups that came from Africa. The black Arts Movement did more than that. It allied itself with world movements. Pan–Africanism and the black arts movement combined gave black poetry a more universal theme , that of the black individual whose plight is that of modern man in general . however , the black identity is preserved.

In Everett Le Roi Jones's the theme of English B , for example , there is the modern theme of the individual with no roots. Jones gives this theme a black quality, the issue of homelessness. The blacks in America are far away from their native Africa. With this, he raises the issue of black identity If a Negro says something straight , he would say what he feels. This sets the whole issue of identity in the poem: The black should be different, in that they should express themselves. Thus, he uses Black English in his poetry to assert the black identity. This gives a sense of defiance.
