Written by Anthony Shaffer (1926-2001) an Englishplayright whos most notable work was the playSleuth (1970), as well as screenplays for Frenzy,The Wicker Man and Death on the Nile. Whodunnit written in 1977 was originally called“The Case of the Oily Levantine”.
Whodunnit takes the audience back to AgathaChristie’s England. Six Strangers and a butlergathered for a black tie dinner in a weathly lawyer’smansion during a thunderstorm. The guests includean aged rear admiral, a bitchy aristocrat, adoddering old archeologist, a dashing young cadand other Christie types. One of the guests is anold Levantine who tells the others (each in private)that he has the goods to blackmail them. He isripe for murder and so it happens. but, whodunnit?
Originally performed at the Biltmore Theatre, NewYork in Dec 1982; though presented at HerMajesty’s Theatre, London in 1979 under it’soriginal title. It is set in the 1920s/30s in the libraryof Orcas Champflower Manor; once a rathergrand room with extensive bookcases.
This production includes strong languageand adult themes. Parental discretion advised.
Not suitable for under 12s, recommend 15+ years.
