PDHPE Workbooks

In 2020, students will be given their PDHPE customized workbooks at school. $40.00 will be charged to your child’s account in Term 1, 2020. Mrs Danielle Kalaizis

Term Four is always a busy time for students as the Yearly Examinations approach very quickly. With reading and comprehension making-up a significant part of each of their examinations, particular focus needs to be paid to their study of English. A majority of the students at Green Valley Islamic College speak English as fluently as native English speakers. However, this alone does not guarantee that students will excel in the study of English and it is a mistake to assume that those who speak fluent conversational English can score well in internal and national exams. Mastering the skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing is crucial in our children’s development. By exposing our students to a wide range of texts and writing skills the English Department seeks to develop our students as effective communicators, critical and imaginative thinkers; and to support their personal development as they establish strong moral and ethical profiles.

Year Seven Poetry In Term Three, Year Seven were introduced to poetry as a genre. Poetry promotes literacy, builds community, and stimulates emotional resilience through fostering trust and empathy while emphasising speaking and listening skills. It gives students an outlet to raise their voices on issues that matter to their hearts. Students are not only given opportunity to read through a variety poems but also

had the opportunity to compose and read original poems. Poetry ‘slam’ was also included as part of Literacy Week activities. Sameeha’s (7B) poem is a ‘masterpiece’. She was able to encapsulate her concerns about the Great Barrier Reef through a concise, accurate and creative use of language.

Great Barrier Reef

As the colours of the creatures spread, Everyone sleeps in their warm and cosy bed, The moon is shining bright upon us, And covering the aqueous water with its fairy dust.

The sounds of the soothing whales, As Mother Nature tells us tales,

Bubbles rising up to the surface of the ocean, We sit and watch in slow motion. The cries of coral calling for us, Alert for a predator waiting to pass, A turtle swimming on its back, His little one keeping track.

The sun rising up from the East, Kings in their Palace having a feast, The glistening sun on the water, From far we see an otter. Kids in hope of catching some fish, Others taking theirs to prepare a dish, In the distance a shark is spotted, A dinner for him already plotted. Kids going back to shore, The shark descending towards the ocean floor, The mood changes when a dolphin is seen, Light grey with a hint of green.

Everyone going back to their homes, As the sun begins to roam, We also head home for a good sleep, Maybe even a bit deep.

Slowly our eyes begin to close, The moon chose a spot and froze, One peaceful sleep underneath the sky, The Sea Creatures call out to us and say “Goodbye”.

The English Faculty has a team of committed teachers

who are passionate about effectively teaching the

English Curriculum. Our gifted and creative students get

many opportunities to showcase their talents through

in-class activities; such as oral presentations and essay

writing competitions; or through school events such as

National Literacy Week. This year, the Literacy Week

activities included the Character Parade, Drawing and

Writing Competitions and a Literacy Quiz; in which

students performed exceptionally.

Term 4

Year Eight is engaging with ‘Myths and Legends’ and closely examining Aboriginal Dreaming stories. Year Nine are expanding on their ‘Drama’ knowledge through a study of William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. Shakespeare’s timeless plays continue to intrigue and inspire societies. Our Year Ten students are continuing to develop their ‘Visual Literacy’ skills through a study of the anime film Howl’s Moving Castle. Our new Year Twelve students have started their first topic the ‘Common Module’ and are busily coming to terms with the expected Year Twelve standards. Finally, to the students currently completing the HSC Examinations, may you all achieve the result you aim to achieve and see the rewards of your hard work through your study of English and all the other subjects studied. Business and Legal Studies students in our class of 2019 are now on the final leg of their high school life. They will soon be sitting for their HSC Exams. The Department wishes to congratulate all our Year 12 students for achieving this significant milestone. This has not been an individual effort. All our dedicated teachers, parents and entire school community have always been very supportive of our students. We know you have worked hard and we pray to Allah SWT to always guide you and continue to shower His choicest blessings on all our students. Term 4 is will see all our Year 9 and 10 Commerce students sitting for their Yearly Exams. The students will be receiving revision lessons on the lead up to these exams. All topics covered this year will be in the exam so students need to start with their revision now. Students must also revise at home to ensure they do well. They are advised not to leave this to the last minute as this may not result in the achieving of satisfactory outcomes. Once again this year, our Business Studies and Legal Studies students experienced an interactive and enjoyable educational excursion to the Sydney Tower Restaurants and the Downing Centre Courts respectively. The Department plans to organise similar activities for the Year 9 and 10 Commerce students so that classroom learning can become more enjoyable when they experience real life examples.

Daffodil Day at Green Valley Islamic College

The staff of Green valley Islamic College supported

Daffodil Day Fundraiser with morning Tea on the 23rd of

August and raised a generous amount of $836.70 which

was donated to the Cancer Council.

Year 10 Geography Assignment

During term 3, week 7, Year 10 organised a fundraiser to support the disadvantaged and raise awareness on social issues such as poverty, hunger, food and water security, orphans, lack of education and the spread of diseases and illness. Although the preparation was quite stressful, the fundraiser was a good experience for all students to contribute to different organisations by buying food and drinks such as donuts, ice-cream, cupcakes, fairy floss, brownies, falafel and participating in games that were held by various stalls with the chance to win prizes.

It was an exciting opportunity for the students while

also being educational by helping them understand the

difficulties people around the world are facing and how

privileged we are. The campaign was really successful

with the students raising over $1500 to donate to their

chosen charity and improve the wellbeing of those

around the world who face the social issues mentioned

above, while also enhancing the wellbeing of our own

students. Thank you to Ms Labiba, for giving us this

assignment and allowing us to make a difference.

Year 9 History Excursion

On the 10th of September, Year 9 students attended an excursion to the Kokoda Trail Memorial Walkway in Rhodes. 50 students and their History teachers spent the morning listening to and learning about the experiences of many Australians during the Second World War. The students were introduced to the Kokoda campaign with a brief presentation and video about the Kokoda Trail and its significance.

Preliminary Studies of Religion II Excursion

Preliminary Students of Religion II students embarked on a journey to the city on the 19th of September 2019 to visit the Sydney Synagogue and St Mary’s Cathedral to consolidate their studies of different religions. Overall, the students really enjoyed their day out and commented on how this experience aided their understanding of the course, and religions in the Australian society.

Year 7 Geography Excursion

In term three on the 24th August, Year 7 students had an exciting and buzzing excursion to three different places; Harold Park, Rozelle Bay and White Bay Power Station as part of their Geography assessment task.

Students examined the factors which determine the liveability of these places using first hand physical testing of sites (Fieldwork geography experiments testing the temperature, water salinity, water acidity and water turbidity) and observation. This excursion gave the students a chance to observe real life highly liveable place in their home city, Sydney.

At Green Valley Islamic College, IST is offered as an elective subject to years 9-10. During the course of 2 years, students are required to learn to use Adobe Photoshop, Flash Player and Audacity to create multimedia electronic advertisements, animations and sound effects and learn and code using one general-purpose programming language such as Python and Scratch. IPT is offered to Year 11 and 12 as a HSC subject. Here, students are introduced to learning about other real-life computer applications and then assessed on their ability to design, manage and update their own projects that mirror applications used in industries such as the IT industry, Businesses, Manufacturing and Education.

Year 9 IST

Students developed a front and back cover for a DVD/console game of their choice. The artist/game was to be either real or fictitious. Secondly, students also designed and published their chosen multimedia web pages using either 3rd party web page design software such as Dreamweaver, WIX, WordPress or HTML.

Year 10 IST

Students completed an assessment task on Database using MS-Access by creating their own Medical Centre Databases and another assessment task on Programming using either MIT Scratch game programming application or Python programming language.

Year 11 and 12 IPT

Students completed an oral presentation for an information system that makes some use of computer technology based on the scenarios provided to them. Students were then challenged by the next assessment where they had to create, manage and update different types of real-life databases based on scenarios provided to them.

Our future goal is to explore and incorporate all the other aspects of the IST and IPT course that are optional topics such as Computer Networking, Robotics and

Automated Systems and Artificial Intelligence, Simulation and modelling. This will ensure that our students are equipped with the relevant computer skills and knowledge to face the challenges of tomorrow.
