As the Chapter went to press, Durham County Council were considering an application (on Wednesday, 12th December) to extend a scheme in Ferryhill which aims to curb anti-social behaviour by the tenants of private landlords. Under the Housing Act 2004, Durham County Council runs a selective licensing scheme in problem areas across the county. It is a criminal offence to rent a property in an area designated for selective licensing without obtaining a licence. Landlords must also prove that they are a fit and proper person, and that they have arrangements in place to deal with any anti- social behaviour by their tenants. The scheme was imple- mented in Ferryhill in 2008, where major problems with crime rates and anti-social behaviour existed, partly as a result of the town’s high percentage of privately rented properties. So far, over 400 properties have been licensed in the Ferryhill area and the scheme is thought to have contributed to a reduction in crime and anti-social behaviour figures. Ian Thompson, the council’s corporate director for regen- eration and economic de- velopment, said: “Selective licensing is needed when private landlords in the area are not taking appropriate action to combat anti-social behaviour. “We are satisfied that this scheme does lead to a reduction in anti- social behaviour as well as improving social and economic conditions.” Ahead of the cabinet decision, Ferryhill residents, landlords and Durham Police have all taken part in a con- sultation on the scheme. Children from Dean Bank Primary School sing carols in the Town Hall gardens last week.

Local school children en-tertained shoppers around the Ferryhill market on Friday 7th December, singing Christmas carols in Ferryhill Town Hall gardens. Infant and Junior children from Cleves Cross Primary School sang first, followed by children from Dean Bank Primary School.

Carol singing in the Town Hall gardens

There will be more carol singing on Friday 21st December by children from Broom Cottages Primary School at 10.15am, followed by children from Ferryhill Station School at 11am.A spokesperson for Ferryhill Town Council commented, “The carol singing always proves to be very popular

with visitors to the local Friday market, with people stopping to listen to the children and parents of pupils from all the primary schools in Ferryhill turning up to show their support.“Why not wrap up warm and come along to brave the cold and support our local youngsters in the run up to Christmas.”

the county moving.”In preparation for the forthcoming winter, the council has the following in place:• More than 42,000 tonnes

of salt in the salt barns ready for use;

• 10 new vehicles added to maintain the fleet of 40 power gritters;

• 5 snow blowers should the roads need to be cleared of snow following a heavy fall;

• Contract arrangements with farmers to help with snow clearing should extra equipment be needed;

• Salt bins which are placed at strategic locations around the county are being filled up so residents can help to clear areas around their homes if needed when snow and ice arrives;

• The council will continue to treat – or pre-salt – 45 per cent of the highways network across the county. These priority routes typically include all A roads, most B

roads, most bus routes, and other locations that are known to the council as problem areas;

• The council will aim to ensure links to industrial estates, most schools, main bus routes and key routes within housing estates are kept running;

Footpaths are not usually treated during normal overnight frosty conditions. However, following heavy snowfall the council will endeavour to clear footpaths in priority areas such as town centres and busy shopping centres, hospitals, health centres, doctors’ surgeries and care homes. With public safety in mind, the council’s website will continue to offer daily winter weather updates, including details on which roads are closed, or passable with care, and tips for driving. Information can be found online at www.durham.gov.uk/winterroadsTo report any problems with highways, contact the action line on 0191 370 6000.

Local residents were left in the dark in more ways than one when two separate faults caused a power cut to hit around 1,500 homes in Chilton, Windlestone and Ferryhill Station, last Friday. Residents who went out to check on vulnerable neighbours, including the elderly and those with newborn babies, complained at the “lack of respect” shown to customers by the power company. The power, which went off for many at 7.55am, returned in different streets throughout the day, but some homes were left without power for almost ten hours. Benny Hewitt, Neighbour-

Residents left in the dark after power cut

hood Watch co-ordinator for The Rows area of Chilton was critical of Northern Powergrid’s failure to keep customers informed: “We understand accidents and unexpected power cuts happen, but supervisors should have knocked on doors to see if everyone was okay,” he said, adding that, “they should have said ‘there is a problem, we don’t know when it’ll be fixed’ so people could make plans and maybe go to family for the day. “Instead people hung on in cold, dark houses when they could have made plans to go elsewhere and be much safer and more comfort-able.” Mr Hewitt was also critical

of Chilton Town Council’s handling of the situation, saying that they could have helped by contacting the power company and passing information on to residents. “There was a complete lack of respect shown by the electric people and town councillors,” he claimed. Town mayor, Cllr Elizabeth Bruce said, “My power was back on by 11am so I thought the problem was resolved. “It wasn’t until Saturday I was made aware that most of Chilton had been off and some until late. “The town council is always willing to help the people of Chilton however it can, but if we don’t know about a situation how can we?”

Councillors Maureen Errington and Margaret Walton, the former Chilton Christmas Lights Committee, would like to thank everyone who has supported them over the years with wine and cheese evenings, tombola stalls, raffles and donations.They would like to say a special thank you to the Grounds Maintenance Contractor, Scott Ellwood,

and the Town Clerk, Paul Gray, for erecting the lights each year. “In addition thanks to Councillor Christine Potts who funded the electricity supply for the new feature on the roundabout.“A new lights committee will be formed in the New Year, we hope everyone will continue to support them, like you have supported us in the past.”

Kieron Lee Wynn, from Ferryhill, admitted to mag-istrates at Newton Aycliffe that he was responsible for stealing a boiler from an empty house in the town last September. The thief was said to have caused £1,300 worth of damage when he stole the boiler, which he subse-quently sold for £36, the

court heard. Prosecutor, Blair Martin, said that Wynn, 19, of Rydal Road had caused extensive damage to pipes during the robbery on September 17th. There was also water damage and further damage to plasterboard. Graham Silvester, in mitigation, said two other

men had committed the crime with Wynn. He also questioned whether the true value of the damage was as much as had been suggested. Wynn was given uncon-ditional bail and ordered to return to the court on Friday, December 14th, for sentencing.

Ferryhill Methodist church has arranged a pub crawl with carols around Ferryhill village on Friday 21st December.The Carollers will be raising funds for Daisy Chain, a local charity which helps families affected by autism.Autism is a lifelong de-velopmental disability that affects how a person communicates with, and

relates to, other people. It also affects how they make sense of the world around them.If you would like to join the group in singing their carols, they will meet in the car park (near the Post Boy) at 7pm. “If you are in the pubs please support this worthy cause,” encouraged a spokesperson.

Come on guys, let us take the pressure offDebbie & the girls are here to help you choose the perfect pamper Christmas gift for your loved one.

Dear Editor,

When I read my daily newspapers I find respect, admiration and honours are paid to many people. I would like in a small way to publically give respect to an ordinary mining man who was extraor-dinary to us who worked with him.

Mr ‘Duck’ Harper was a supervisor on the training face at Dean & Chapter Colliery approximately around 1957.

It turned out he had been a soldier in the First World War when he was honoured with the DSO medal. Mr Harper was in the rearguard at the retreat of the Battle of Mons.

As young men we asked, “Why did you do it?”

“I was given the order,” was the reply.

It is sometimes difficult when you are young to understand such disciplined actions but myself and many workmates held Mr Harper, the gentleman, in the greatest respect.

If his family are within the area, I am sure they are rightly proud of the military man and the man who was our extraor-dinary friend.

Yours respectfully,

P McCabe, on behalf of Dean & Chapter training face workforce.

Ferryhill Village WI’s Christmas Party, held on Wednesday 5th December, had a fantastic turn-out, despite the adverse weather. The ladies were enter-tained by local singing group VIVO. However, Jill Swift, who was due

to attend and sell her home-made jewellery was unable to make it.The group’s next meeting will be held on Wednesday 8th January when they will have their Annual Night Out to the Village Inn. Members and guests are asked to meet at 6.30pm

WI hold Christmas partyfor a meal at 7pm.A WI spokesperson commented, “Would all members and guests please note that they should make their own arrangements with other members and guests to arrive at 6.30pm. We should have a great night!”

There are three new junior displays at Chilton Library-this week. The first display is for younger readers, which includes the book ‘Baby’s First Christmas’ by Christina Goodings. Bring joy to baby's first Christmas as together you share this bright and festive book! With one bright il-lustration and one or two words per page, this board book is especially for the very, very young. Stephen Barker's colourful, blocky illustrations will help with simple picture recogni-tion and early language awareness, and the sturdy board book format will survive all that a baby can throw at it.For the more advanced readers there is ‘Mr Men 12 days of Christmas’ by Roger Hargreaves. Every year Mr. Muddle gets in a terrible muddle.

He just can't remember when Christmas is. He can never get the right day, or the right present for that matter. But this year Mr. Muddle has a plan. A plan to make sure he will get the right day for Christmas. This is a hilarious caper through the months of the year with many favourite Mr. Men and Little Miss characters along the way.To help keep children occupied this winter, the library has a selection of books in the Christmas Ideas display. This includes the ‘Usborne Farmyard Tales Christmas Activities book.’ This title features fun Christmas activities, which include recipes and ideas for Christmas tree decora-tions, wrapping paper and gift tags. The Library is currently issuing books for return in January 2013.

A junior Christmas craft session will be held on Thursday 13th December from 5pm – 6pm. Contact the library for more infor-mation.The junior Christmas colouring competition finishes on Monday 17th December. All winners will be contacted on Thursday 20th by phone.A Book and Chat session will be held on Thursday 20th December from 2pm.A Christmas Coffee morning will be held on Friday 21st December from 10am. A spokesperson for the Library said, “This is a free event for the staff to thank all our borrowers and to give them the opportunity to say goodbye before the staff changes take effect after Christmas.”Chilton Library will close at 1pm on Monday 24th December and re-open on Thursday 3rd January.

Dean Bank Primary and Nursery School is celebrat-ing recognition from Ofsted inspectors for having made significant progress since the last inspection three years ago. The school was originally graded as only ‘Satisfacto-ry’, but is now recognised as being ‘Good’ with some ‘Outstanding’ teaching and learning.The school is one of the first primary schools to have been inspected under the new, much tougher and more rigorous inspection

framework, introduced in September 2012. The report praises all aspects of the school and makes particular reference to the strong teaching of English and Maths.Headteacher, Peter Speck, said of the report, “I am particularly pleased that the children, staff and governors have recogni-tion for the hard work they have put in to improve this school during these last three years. “Our English and Maths results have significantly

improved since the last Ofsted visit, and are now above National Average in many areas.”The children were delighted with the report and were proud to share with the inspectors all aspects of school life, summarised by the comments of Year 6’s Abby Nelson and Adam Young who said, “The children and staff have worked really hard to achieve this amazing report. This is a great school – we’re really proud to come here.”

At around 7am on the morning of 7th September, Kelly Marie Temple was driving her Suzuki Swift in Elm Road, Ferryhill, when she collided with a wall. She left a note on the vehicle before making her way to her boyfriend's home where police found her slumped over the kitchen table beside three empty lager cans. She told police that she had consumed these after the accident.Forensics concluded via

a back calculation of analysed breath specimen that her blood alcohol level was 67mgs at the time of the collision.The 27 year-old of Windsor Avenue, who had been fully cooperative with officers, was said to suffer from a bi-polar disorder and had not taken her medication at the time of the offence.The defendant was fined a total of £215, including costs and was disquali-fied from driving for 18 months.

The NHS County Durham and the Darlington NHS Foundation Trust’s Talking About Cancer (TAC) team is working within your local community to help raise awareness of cancer.Look out for informa-tion stands in your local community venues during January, focusing on kidney and bladder cancer awareness. A member of the TAC team will be there for you to talk to, along with leaflets and information for you to take away with you.Research shows early detection of bowel cancer and increased awareness of the NHS bowel screening

programme increases survivorship rates and ultimately save lives. The awareness sessions aim to provide good quality, easy to understand infor-mation about the signs and symptoms of cancer along with the screening programmes available. The intention of the session is to encourage members of the public who may be concerned to visit their GP sooner. If your group or organisa-tion would be interested in having an awareness session, please contact Karen Moore on 0191 5692823 or Jill Wheatley on 0191 5692859.

Dean Bank Primary School has made significant progress in the last three years.

Poetry CornerBah Humbug!

by Clifford Chambers

My plea to all my Ferryhill friendsIs please don’t send me a Christmas card

The cost of postage is now too muchAnd many may find it hard.

Most cards are much cheaperThan a postage stamp to buy

Even though it may be second classThe cost of posting is too high.

We are the ones who have to pay

Greedy executives at the topUsing us to feed their big fat salaries

While sailing off in their yachts!

Seasons greetings I will includeWhen writing to all my friends

Before or after makes no differenceSending cards, no longer the trend.

I refuse to pay over the odds

When such a cost has little reasonSo please, do not send me a cardFor the sake of the festive season!

Ferryhill Town Council has once again provided financial support to two local organisations in Ferryhill. The Mayor of Ferryhill, Councillor Amy Rimington recently presented Eric Schlosser of Ferryhill

Town Band with a cheque for £1,000 and presented a cheque to Christine Hall of the LADDER Centre in Ferryhill for £800. Both groups will use the grants towards running costs for the services provided to the local

community.Amy commented, “These donations are an example of the Town Council’s commitment to supporting local organi-sations working for the benefit of the community in Ferryhill.”

Ferryhill Dynamoes took on High Handenhold Bird Inn FC in their latest Swinburn Maddison Division Three match, with the Ferryhill side running out as com-fortable winners.Ferryhill took an early lead when Luke McGill squared for Scott Maughan whose shot hit the bar, but Reece Bell headed the rebound home. Skipper David Hall made it 2-0 with a goalmouth scramble and Marco Oswald quickly made it 3-0 with a low drive from 12 yards.

Another win for the Dynamoes

High Handenhold pulled one back before Scott Maughan made it 4-1 with another goalmouth scramble.High Handenhold then grabbed another one before half time when stand-in goalkeeper John Sweeney gave away a clumsy penalty. After the break it was all Ferryhill. Man-of-the-match, Scott Maughan made it 5-2 with one of his trademark solo efforts, beating three men and rounding the keeper.

Two 13-year-old Chilton youngsters were celebrat-ing recently after passing their Tae Kwon Do black belt grading.

Young duo receive Tae Kwon Do black belt grading

Lucy Cameron, from Windgrove, and Shaun Nattrass from Hollowfield, both attend the local Tae Kwon Do club in Chilton.

The pair completed their black belt grading at Newton Hall Community Centre in Durham last weekend.The trainer at the club is Joan Britton, also from Chilton. The young teenagers’ achievement is all the more special as they are the club’s first members for some time that have reached black belt level.The club is growing in numbers and popularity and the local visit to Spennymoor last month by Olympic medallist, Jade Jones, proved very popular with members.For anyone interested in going along, the club takes place in Chilton Primary School every Tuesday between 5.30 and 6.30pm and on Thursdays between 6 and 7.30pm.

Jonathan Mason, whose finishing has been very ordinary of late, extended the lead with a brace of headers for a final score of Ferryhill Dynamoes 7, High Handenhold 2.Meanwhile, the Ferryhill Dynamoes Christmas Party will take place on 23rd December from 1pm-4pm at the Ferryhill British Legion. Entertainment will be from comedian, Jonny Mac and tickets for the event are just £2. Everyone is welcome to go along.
