Soldiering through cancer battleFerryhill mother-of-two Liane Roberson was diagnosed with cervical cancer in May and has undergone radiation chemotherapy at James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough. Last month however, she was told the treatment hadn’t worked and that she has no further options. The 26 year-old soldier, who serves with the Military Provost Guard Service at Catterick, hopes to beat desperately long odds by being accepted into a drug trial that could prolong or potentially save her life. Liane and her family are organising a fun-draising day for Macmillan Cancer Support – a charity that has helped Pte Roberson come to terms with her condition and aided her in managing her medication and the complex paperwork that makes up part of her day-to-day life. It also supports her husband Grant, a corporal in the Royal Corps Signals, and

her children Abby (six) and Kieran (11 months).Liane’s sister Samantha, who serves with the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers said, “Cancer is worse than any deployment with the Army – you can train for any circumstance and go into a situation knowing the risks. This is unfair and more personal. We will keep fighting for Liane and for Macmillan.”Liane, her sister Samantha and her cousin Sarah Todd are hosting ‘Liane’s Big Brew’ as part of Macmil-lan’s Biggest Coffee Morning in the Royal British Legion Club, Ferryhill Station from 9am on Friday 30th September. There will be a raffle with Spa days and electrical goods to be won, as well as refresh-ments on sale. Everyone is welcome to attend. Anger over Leisure Centre decision

There was outcry last week as Durham County Council supported plans to hammer the final nail in the Ferryhill Leisure Centre coffin – by refusing all offers to keep it open. It now looks like the

writing is on the wall for the much loved, much talked about community resource, with some late money on the table facing a stiff prospect to show Council bosses how the centre could operate at a

profit.Council leader Simon Henig said they didn’t want to close any centres, but in the face of unprecedented spending cuts of £125m, the decision to close reflects what is happening all over the country in reaction to the Government’s “short, sharp, shock treatment.”Councillor Brian Avery said that it was a very sad day for Ferryhill and criticised the council’s “cloak and dagger” approach to takeover talks and it’s general failure to promote the facility. Councillor David Farry agreed, saying that the bid from Ferryhill Community Partnership was “perfect” but it was let down by the council. However Councillor Bob Young, cabinet member for leisure said that the robust process had been transpar-ent from the outset with no hidden agenda.Ferryhill Leisure Centre is likely to be closed as this issue of The Chapter goes to press, there is some further discussion and views on our letters page and we welcome any further contributions from our readers.

It is likely that Ferryhill Leisure Centre will close this week.

Over recent months, staff at Tenlands Care Centre in Ferryhill have been chatting with their residents, learning about their past and finding out whether they have any unfulfilled dreams.Les Brain, resident of Tenlands for over three years and formerly of Merrington Lane, confided that he would love to hear the sound of Big Band again.Music has always been a very large part of his past and he missed the sound of live bands. Although Tenlands regularly invites live entertainment into the home, the size of a band prevents this from being possible. Les is a very quiet gentleman who does not often get involved in activities and had not left Tenlands for over two years as he 'prefers the quiet life' - in his own words!Home Manager Karen Davison feels very passionate that residents come into Tenlands 'to live' and was very keen to be involved in any dream-realising. After a chat with Les, he agreed that it would be lovely to go out for the evening so plans were underway...

On the evening of Tuesday 20th September, Les was taken to the Gala Theatre in Durham, accompanied by both Karen & Bev Poulson, the Social Life Facilitator in Tenlands.That night, Jeff Dingle and The Moodswing Trio were performing a Charity Show for St Cuthbert’s Hospice and the theatre was packed.Jeff performs mainly 'Rat Pack' music, which Les loves.During the journey to the theatre, Les chatted about his past and the reason he enjoyed this type of music. It transpired that Les had played drums in a three-piece band for all of his adult life, playing every weekend for many years at The Three Tuns Hotel in Durham. He played mainly Sinatra-type music and hoped that he would hear 'Fly Me To The Moon' that

evening.Jeff Dingle & The Moodswing Trio did not disappoint. Not only did the play Les's favourite song, but dedicated it to Les - after a bit of crafty emailing and note-exchanging by Karen!Les thoroughly enjoyed the whole evening and, on the journey home, he was already planning where he would like to go next, much to the delight of his companions.Karen said “It was an honour to be involved in such a special night. To see Les's smile as the lights dimmed, his head turn to hear the music more clearly and his face so animated was a delight. We are all so proud to be working with such special people and to be given the opportu-nity to share their past and enhance their present is an honour.”

Les thoroughly enjoyed his trip out to the Gala Theatre in Durham.

Tenlands fairy Godmothers grant residents’ wish

Rehearsals are gathering momentum for Ferryhill Stage Society’s forthcom-ing production of ‘Viva Mexico.’ This lively, colourful show is sure to keep you enter-tained from start to finish. Set, as the title suggests, in Mexico it is the story of the dashing Ramon, his adventures and romances woven with wonderful music.The Society is delighted to welcome Ferryhill’s own Joe Makepeace in the role of Ramon; his first show with the group.Familiar favourites are Michael Coulson and Wilf Donohue playing the comedy roles of Pablo

and prove that you can lead a normal and active life again after transplan-tation.Ellis had a kidney transplant in 2007. He has raised £320 towards the RVI Children’s Unit in Newcastle where he had his operation. ASBO to stop nuisance drunkLocal woman Sharnie Rank was accused in court of pressurising friends and neighbours into allowing her and her friends to drink in their homes – resulting in fighting, threatening behaviour and damage to property and belongings.Miss Rank, 21, of Lime Road, Ferryhill is banned from buying alcohol in Ferryhill or entering any licensed premises, is prohibited from trespassing on private property and barred from making threats or giving abuse to the public or police, in a court order made last week at Darlington Magis-trates Court.Chris Southy, representing Durham Police who applied for the order told the court, “She goes to a house with other people with bags of cans and bottles and insists her unwilling hosts provide a roof over their heads while they consume large amounts of alcohol. The whole thing inevitably ends in tears.”He went on to tell how the group would often become rowdy and violent, fighting, causing damage, refusing to leave – with disturbance often spilling out into the

street. Miss Rank has come to the attention of local police 25 times in the last 6 months. Mr Southy continued saying how Miss Rank intimidates household-ers who refuse her entry, on one occasion knocking on a back door for 40 minutes. She has also harassed police with nuisance 999 calls and has convictions for disorder, assault and affray.Miss Rank was evicted from her last property, with her ex-landlords describing her as one of the worst tenants they had ever had, “a tenant from hell” in the words of Mr Southy. She had attended only a few sessions of alcohol rehabilitation and ignored the terms of her acceptable behaviour contract, which she signed in May 2008.Miss Rank did not attend the court hearing, despite officers reminding her the same morning. In her absence magistrates passed the order which also bans her from consuming alcohol in public, engaging in drunk and disorderly behaviour, making nuisance calls or associating with five named people. These restrictions apply in Ferryhill.

Dear Editor,

It now seems even more likely that Ferryhill Leisure Centre will close. So as we have included in our poll tax an amount for leisure facilities, I suggest that we all ring the council and ask for a rebate.

Why should we now pay for something which this council is hell bent on depriving us of?

It has had the chance to keep it open but refuses to allow private ownership, for no good reason. The County Council's head of leisure has allowed it to run at a loss for years and now will blame the government for cuts.

This council was voted in to serve all the county not just Consett and the north, in fact they don't care about us one bit.

Dear Editor,

Children’s health, safety and well being are of paramount concern to Chilton Primary School.

Despite visual signage around the school building and perimeters advising members of the community that the school site is not accessible to dog walkers, we continue to have problems with dog fouling on the school fields. This results in pupils not having access to fields as a learning environment, due to the hazards attached to dog faeces – this being Toxacariasis whereby the eggs of the roundworm Toxacara are passed from dogs to humans and can result in infection which can lead to serious illness or even loss of sight.

We are requesting the backing of all members of the community who own dogs that they refrain from using the fields as a dog walking area. School is working closely with the Neighbourhood Wardens to publicise and eradicate dog fouling around school and it’s surrounding areas. Failure to clean up after your dog is against the law and may result in a fine being issued.

Please note that from Monday 3rd October the gates at the top of the field (near the library) will only be open from 8.40am to 9.10am and then from 2.45pm to 3.30pm. This will still allow parents and children enough time to access the “safe route to school” via the field.

I want to take the opportunity in thanking everyone who voted for me in the Ferryhill & Dean Bank Ward By-Election on the 22nd September, and to thank my family and friends who gave their support on the night of the count and during the run-up to the election.

I would also like to offer my commiserations to the Labour Party candidate, Mrs Kathleen Conroy. She was very gracious in defeat, as were her supporters at the count. It was a valiant effort from both sides, so thanks to all.

It truly saddens when I hear how Ferryhill has been talked about recently, for most, all the wrong reasons. As Town Councillors we must show the people of Ferryhill - the people we represent - that local issues are addressed, residents are listened to, residents’ concerns and worries are acted upon, and as a Town Council we provide services, amenities, and leisure activities that try to cater for all. With all of this, and the crucially important support of the Ferryhill people, let's get Ferryhill talked about for all the right reasons.

Thursday 22nd September, 2011, Durham County Council supported plans to close Leisure Centres at Ferryhill and Crook on 1st October, 2011.

The Council leader explained the Council did not want to take this action, but facing cuts of £125m over the next four years, the closures were a reflection of what was happening across the country.

County Councillors for Ferryhill have made every effort to have this decision avoided by supporting the business plan submitted by Ferryhill Community Partnership and Ferryhill Town Council in conjunction with a third party. Our County Councillors have offered to attend a meeting of the Users Group to answer any questions they can on the closure, or position at present regarding the Centre, or matter relative to the decision.

It is with the aforementiontioned that I would like to invite all members of the Users Group to a meeting at Ferryhill Station Working-men’s Club on Tuesday 4th October at 7pm.

Chilton residents will have been watching the ongoing progression of the Skate Park in the town. Once completed this will be another addition to the town’s play equipment portfolio.As yet the project is not completed as the fencing, CCTV, floodlight-ing and signage still need to be completed before the facility is officially opened.A spokesperson for Chilton Town Council said, “It is imperative that we get the CCTV and floodlight-ing in place to ensure the children can use the

facility safely.” Sadly some of the equipment has already been vandalised. Anyone caught may be prosecuted for causing criminal damage. If anyone is aware of vandalism please telephone the police in confidence on 0345 60 60 365 or the Town Council on 01388 721788.However, those involved with the project are aware that the youngsters are eager to use the facility and have been doing so whilst the project has been under construction. The Town Council would appreciate it if youngsters

could refrain from the using the facility until it is complete. It is hoped that there will be an official opening; details to be published.The spokesperson for the council went on to say, “In the interest of safety may we remind users and ask parents/guardians to urge youngsters to wear safety helmets, elbow and shin pads when using this equipment. “We hope that users really enjoy using the facility but remind them to do so safely and at the same time look after the equipment.”

Two Ferryhill youngsters made their families proud recently, when they ran the Junior and Mini Great North Run, raising just over £600 for charity in the process. Aidan K Forster, 9, and 7 year-old Lewis Elliot were raising money for The British Heart Foundation, after they both lost loved ones to heart attacks. Aidan, who attends Broom Cottages Primary School, was running in memory of his Uncle Keith who died suddenly ten years ago, while Lewis, of Cleves

Cross Primary School, was running for his Grandad who passed away last year.The Bupa Mini Great North Run covers a distance of 1.5km and is for children aged 3 – 8 years. The Bupa Junior Great North Run is for youngsters aged 9 – 16 and follows a 4km route with a separate boys and girls race.Both boys put in an out-standing run and finished with excellent times.Their parents are extremely proud of them and would like to thank everyone who sponsored them.

to provide good quality, easy to understand infor-mation about the signs and symptoms of cancer along with the screening programmes available. Ferryhill Town Youth Under 14s started the new season away to Hardwick Youth and came away on the wrong end of a 5-3 scoreline.Man-of-the-match went to Lewis Topping who scored an excellent second half hat-trick.Ferryhill Town Under 14s

were at home to Aycliffe Juniors and goals from Connor Pearson, Matty Craddock, James Rouell and goalkeeper Noah Cummings were not enough as Ferryhill were unlucky to lose 5-4. Man - of - the - match was James Rouell.

The Saints go marching on

Ferryhill Saints’ incredible form continued with an excellent home win against a very good Sunderland Ashbrook Belford House, winning 4 – 1 in the County Cup on Sunday 25th September 2011.Ferryhill started the game brightly and within minutes were 1 – 0 up with Paul Robson scoring the goal.Saints continued to create chances, and the second goal came on 17 minutes when a Jonathan Hair corner was headed home by the lively Pac Man.Sunderland seemed shell struck, not able to contain the relentless pressure with Martin Reid being at the heart of everything, controlling the midfield.

On 30 minutes it was 3 – 0 when the hard working Krugga got a well deserved goal, after great work from Pac Man.The Saints ended the half with another goal, this time a 30 yard drive from Jonathan Hair which deflected and looped into the roof of the net, to round off a fantastic 1st half.After the break Sunderland finally managed to get a foothold on the game, with some great passing.They got their reward when their lively centre forward beat a couple of Saints defenders and fired home.The away side continued to put pressure on the Saints,

but some outstanding defending by Paul Robson, Nicky Patterson and Mark Burnett at the back kept the away side at bay.Ferryhill finished the game stronger, creating two or three great chances with Shane Todd pulling the strings, but were unable to add to their goal tally.This win is the Saints’ 7th in a row. Manager Lee Jewitt and Assistant Manager Dappa put the great form down to a great work rate and fantastic team spirit.Man-of-the-Match was Paul Robson.The next game is at home to East Rainton at Mainsforth on Sunday 2nd October. Kick off at 10.30am.

Defeat for Town Youth

Another win for Ferryhill Celtic F.C. Ferryhill Celtic F.C. progressed to the next round of the Sunday County Cup with a 2 – 0 away win at Burnmoor F.C. On Sunday 25th September 2011.Celtic started the game well but found it difficult to break down a determined Burnmoor side and went in at half time 0 – 0.The 2nd half saw Celtic take more control with Kurt Seymour and Marco Oswald dominating the midfield, with some patient controlled football.The first goal finally arrived after Alan Robson, who provided a goal threat

after coming on as sub, was fouled on the edge of the box. Marco Oswald stepped up and put an un-stoppable strike into the top corner.Celtic, with their confidence high pushed for a second goal. It came with Kurt Seymour linking well with Kieron Liddle, who put a brilliant cross into the box for Liam Taylor to bury a great header past the keeper, winning the tie for Celtic.Man-of-the-Match was Kurt Seymour who had an out-standing game.The next game is on Sunday 2nd October at home to Kelloe W.M.C. In the Heart Foundation Cup.
