SOUTH CUBITT

The greatly awaited house performance competition this year did not disappoint. South- Cubitt, led by southies Caitlin Yand Flossy L, performed a stunning rendition of ‘Praise you’ by Hannah Grace and ‘Somebody that I used to know’ by Gotye. Although they placed only third, everyone involved sang their hearts out, and spe-cial mention must go to Phoebe S and Caitlin who wowed the audi-ence with their pitch-perfect solos. Better luck next year girls!

SOUTH EAST

The other half of South certainly impressed with their incredible performance of two songs: Bloodstream by Ed Sheersn, and Skin by Rag n Bone man. Emma G and Lizzy P led the girls, and the harmo-nies were faultless, with many spectacular solo’s. All in all it was an amazing production.

House dance

Yet again the new term brought

the House dance competition. The

sixth form lead the way creating

awesome choreography and in-

spiring the fourth form to get in

the house spirit.

It was a fantastic event, dominat-

ed by south and as usual the event

received impeccable support and

excitement throughout the school.

Well done to all the 4th form

southies who participated and the

6th form who choreographed the

dances.

It was a very successful evening

for south, with South East taking

first place and South Cubitt a very

close second.

Public speaking

This year, the South senior public speaking team consisted of Emma G and Lizzy P speaking on Organ donation

The juniors consisting of Zoe B and Millie W discussing the matter of Cultural dilution

All the houses put forward a very strong team, and although we didn't place we count the event as quite an achievement because the girls presented very strong and persua-sive arguments. It was another very enjoyable house event and the girls proved them-selves yet again impressing the south supporting team with their great knowledge and eloquent speaking.

House challenge

The house challenge competition follows the format of ‘University challenge’ and all the houses are pitched against each other, in a challenge of wide ranging general knowledge. It is always a great event for both those participating and the audience who can challenge themselves throughout as well. Despite a valiant effort the teams did not take home wins for the house but we always have next year and unfaltering house spirit.

4th form cross-country

The 4th form cross country was a fantastic event. The whole year group was split in two, boys and girls. The girls, including the new addition of Rhodes house to increase the rivalry, headed off first, run-ning through the school grounds filled with house spir-it, with the boys following soon after. It was a very enjoy-able scene and although it is an event which is not general-ly the favorite of the fourth form, the cross country is a ‘right of passage’ to them all and emphasizes the spirit of the Cranleigh community, making it a fun event and opening the eyes of the fourth form to what to expect from their time here.

In terms of results although we did not win, coming sec-ond overall the southies showed their talents, with four of our girls (Millie C, Scarlett S Halle W and Eliza W) finish-ing in the top six of the event, with a special mention to Eliza for coming first overall. Well done to you all, and we’re sure you will en-joy watching it next year!!

The South House Play, “Girls Like That”, this year was one of the best we’ve seen. It ad-dressed the impacts which technology can have on young people in today’s society; the topical nature of the play made it all the more impressive that the girls pulled it off with such tremendous success. Special mention must go to Lotty C for her passionate performance which elicited deep sympathy and insight into the subject matter in a mature and confi-dent manner.

In addition to the loaded mes-sage of the play, there was also an underlying element of hu-mour. The appearance of Hel-en C and Katherine P lunging onto stage as policemen was particularly memorable in this respect. The audience also delighted in singing and danc-ing, as well as the occasional risqué joke! All members of the large cast were absolutely su-perb, but a special mention must go to Zoe B, Maddy P, Fifi R, Aimee W and Charlotte C, who all grasped the dichotomy

of the humour and sobriety in the play with real sophistica-tion and maturity.

Immense thanks must also go to the directors Flossy L, PJ C and Gen G-R and also to Miss Leach, who dedicated a

huge amount of her time to help with the play.

In the senior vocal Helen Wareham there were three competitors from South; Caitlin Y, Imo S and Emma G. They all sung incredibly and Imo got a place in the final after her stunning rendition of the ‘Recitative and Aria’ originally sung by the Countess. In the senior woodwind Helen Wareham Emma G and Lizzy P both played the clarinet. They played extremely with Emma re-ceiving a place in the final along with Imo from the vocal competi-tion which will take place later next term. We look forward to hearing more Southies show their talents in next term’s competitions and the Helen Wareham final. In the juniors, the vocal perfor-mance in particular was extremely well attended by such a supportive audience, with South noticeably having the best turnout by far! There was such an elated atmos-phere, with so much encourage-ment for every single act, and all in all, it is fair to say that it was a highly enjoyable night, showcasing all of the hard work and talent of the South girls, so congratulations to every competitor! It was under-standably a very difficult category to judge since the standards were so high, however, the final results were ; Frankie (Rhodes) taking first place, Will (North), taking second, and Lina M (South), taking third prize. Once again, well done to eve-ryone that took part and contribut-ed to such an incredible night, and particular congratulations to all of the south girls who participated ; Zoe B, Scarlett S, Lina M, Emma G, Imo S, Lizzy P and Caitlin Y.

With Michaelmas came the first “Cranleigh live" of the new school year, complete colourful lights and an energet-ic vibe to create the atmosphere of being at a real concert. It was a full school event with every inch of the speech hall taken up by both pupils and parents either sit-ting on top of each other on the steps; standing by the drinks table under the fairy lights or chatting to their neighbour all in awe of the performers. This is the one and only event in the term, where all pupils run furiously in order not to be late or miss anything (you don't see this kind of sporting showcase even on sports day!) From the start, you could feel the antici-pation of the audience and the musicians alike waiting nervously for Mr Royall to start the evening off with a few words of thanks, then the evening began. For those of you who don't know what Cranleigh live is, it is a concert that is the pinnacle and aim for all contemporary artists in the school, allowing them to show off their musicianship and hard work. All the performers who participated must firstly and rightly be praised for their bravery. Standing up on stage, with nearly 600 pairs of eyes staring at you behind the blinding spotlight, is a very daunting thing, especially for first-timers; but as usual Southies were up to the challenge. Honor R (U5th) sang a stunning cover of Emilie Sande's "Clown", Phoebe S (L5th) Duetted with Max M (East L5th) and per-formed an impressive version of "I was made for loving you" by Tori Kelly and Ed Sheeran and the two new L6th Charlie W-H and Georgia M sang a serene version of "Eyes shut" by Years and Years, along with a debut from Freya H on the piano These performers did both themselves and South House proud as they performed so professionally despite being completely drained from a jam-packed first half of term. Well done to all who took part and we look forward to the next Cranleigh live in the New Year.

Enron

The south girls had a significant presence on the stage all excelling at being dramatic. The girls who were Involved were: Flossy L, Ally F, Aimee W, Maddy P, Amelie LP, Cece C and PJ.

With a notable mention to PJ as the main role within the play as the character of Claudia Roe . She performed with the necessary tenacity, power and strength required for a high-powered female executive, capturing the rivalry, manipulation and ultimate betrayal perfectly. Other noticeable perfor-mances included Maddy Ps Irene Grant who effec-tively humanised the impact the company’s loss had on its employees; and Aimee W who managed to emphasise the shock and disbelief of the media at the sudden downfall of Enron.

As well as on stage there were Southies working on the play behind the scenes: Katherine P on cos-tumes, Laila S on props, along with Lizzy P, Jess R and Claire A helping with making the set too. A big congratulations goes out to all the girls who put in so much time and effort to produce an outstanding play worthy of the theatres.

Hockey this term for the girls was incredibly successful. The “club” had a 65% wining per-centage and the number of girls participating in teams is yet again growing. All the girls perform on the pitch and the fact that two teams are in na-tional finals displays the tal-ents with the sport.

No matter what level everyone throws themselves into the sport and it is especially prominent in our house hock-ey matches.

Although it wasn’t netball sea-son this term, there have been many tournaments and training sessions throughout Michael-mas that many of the Southies have been involved in. There was the Surrey School’s Compe-tition which saw both the U14A’s and the 1sts win their pools and qualify to the surrey finals which are in March – the first time in a very long time where both teams have quali-fied which is very exciting! Un-fortunately the country round Surrey competition didn’t go so well but everyone is very excit-ed to begin netball season next term on a high working towards the surrey finals!

In October half term Amy S, Freya H, Daisy R, Hollie H, Scarlet S and Bella B went to Addington for the NSEA National Championships where they were very successful at all levels. Hav-ing won the RPL for their area, Amy, Scarlett and Bella competed in the final to come 6th overall. All three teams in the 75cm Arena Eventing came in the top with line-up, finish-ing 3rd, 4th and 6th. The 85cm and 95cm arena eventing team including Hollie came 5th in both. Freya was part of the 1.10m showjumping team that finished in 6th. Amy and Daisy competed in the dressage and the team including Amy finished 6th overall. Zoe B Scarlett, Bella and An-nabel I also recently went to the Na-tional Plate Championship at Keysoe where they were extremely successful with teams coming 1st and 2nd in the mini, 1st in the novice and 3rd in the intermediate JWS.

Road to nationals

Cranleigh’s U18 Girls were crowned South Regional Outdoor Hockey champions after a well fought cam-paign. They have qualified for the In-vestec Schools National Finals at Lee Valley Hockey and Tennis Centre, Olympic Park, on Wednesday 28th February and Thursday 1st March 2018. It’s been a great term for Cran-leigh Hockey in all age groups. The Girls U14 Outdoor team also won the South Heats and South Quarter-final. Following in the footsteps of the un-der 18s, the under 14 girls won the South Hockey Finals and qualified for the National Finals at the end of Feb-ruary. These achievements are testa-ment to all the hard work and training the girls put in, well done to all of our southies

Sports

Riding

Hockey Netball

On the swimming front the team has had a pretty quiet term, having had a fixture against Wellington, where the girls team continued their 4 year win-ning streak in gala’s. The girls involved continue to go to their morning train-ing and 5 southies have been selected for next term’s Bath cup nationals re-lay competition. Good luck to them all in the new year

Swimming

CCF

This term has been a great one for CCF. Fourteen cadets took part in a parade to mark the 25th anniversary of the Princess of Wales’s Royal regiment at the Kent County Cricket Ground. We were part of 150 cadets from across the South east who were present and were inspected by Brigadier Stokes, Lance Ser-geant Johnson Beharry VC and Colonel Crowley. This included Katherine P and Claire A from South. We also had the biennial inspection which was a great success and ended with the awarding of berets to all juniors in a passing out parade.

Other activities from the term

Zambian celebration day

The celebration day this year involved a

fun mufti day in which everyone was en-

couraged to wear the main colours of the

Zambian flag; red, green, yellow and

black. As you can see from the picture

red was a popular choice! It kicked off

with an informative chapel service from

the sixth form students who had most

recently visited Zambian At lunch there

were three different meals where the

choice was out of your hands, to high-

light that in life you cant always chose

where you end up. All in all it was a day

where we all thought “beyond ourselves”,

which was enjoyed by all.

Amsterdam art trip.

The sixth form artists embarked on a trip to Am-

sterdam to be immersed in the culture and art

during the October half term. The trip lasted a

few days and our southies: Fifi, Layla and Carlo-

line all produced some impressive sketch books

from their travels.

Cubitt South charity wine and cheese

evening

This term saw the return of another successful

charity wine and cheese evening from the sixth

form from South and Cubitt. It was a very en-

joyable evening with the wine and music flow-

ing. Yet again, the duo of Charlie W-H and

Georgia M amazed with their harmonic perfor-

mance, as well as the trio of Becky Q, Millie M

and Imo S singing very eloquently. Both creat-

ing a lovely atmosphere in the Pavillion.

Zambia trip

In the October half term a group of lower sixth

had the opportunity to go to Zambia and visit our

partner school, Kawama. They saw the progress

due to the help and donations from Cranleigh

School and Beyond Ourselves. From South there

were Ella B, Imo S and Abbie S as part of the

group. There were many activities like work expe-

rience, house visits, church singing and helping in

the classroom. In addition the group interviewed

and recorded data from each of the children at the

school for the sponsorship forms and general up-

dates which are often heart-breaking. The trip fin-

ished with a couple of days at Chimfunshi, a chim-

panzee sanctuary and added to an amazing experi-

is, as well as to thank all the amazing staff who are so committed and caring to us and

south. It is always a lovely evening and ends the term on high and this term the girls
