The term ‘Garden City’ refers to towns and neighbourhoods which have been planned in the spirit of the Garden City Movement, which emerged in late 19th century.

Many towns and cities during the industrial revolution were dense, polluted and dirty with little in the way of greenery, fresh air and sunlight. In response, social reformer Ebenezer Howard proposed the idea of a Garden City, a new settlement that had: “the advantages of the most energetic and active town life with all beauty and delight of the country”.

Letchworth Garden City was the first such development and remains an inspiring example of the approach. Our project on this site has given us a chance to go back to the principles of the Garden City, and explore how this could be delivered in a contemporary context.

We have accommodated the car and modern amenities and services, while creating a wonderful living environment and exploring opportunities for cooperative management.

We hope our Garden Village will have the long-lasting success of Letchworth.

Ruby Loftus was born on 4 October, 1921 in Llanhilleth, South Wales. In November 1940, Ruby went to work No 11 Royal Ordnance Factory, Newport manufacturing Bofor Guns, an anti-aircraft weapon for the war effort. Ruby quickly mastered the highly skilled technique of “screwing the breech ring for a Bofor Gun”. Ruby was 21 in 1942 when she came to the attention of well known artist, Dame Laura Knight who visited Newport to paint Ruby at work. In April 1943, the painting “Ruby Loftus screwing a breech ring” was put on display and dominated the Royal Academy of Art’s summer exhibition. The painting now forms part of the collection held at the Imperial War Museum and is currently on display at the National Portrait Gallery, London.

Loftus Garden Village will be designed to promote grow-your-own food. Easy access to space for food-growing is a key element of Garden Village life, more important than ever given rising food prices and the need for low-carbon, more sustainable lifestyles. As well as providing the opportunity to grow food in all rear gardens, the Garden Village will include two modest kitchen gardens adjacent to the railway sidings in the north east of the site.

By planting a variety of fruit trees at the end of every garden we will create screening to neighbours and the right mix of trees needed for pollination. In combination , this creates the potential to create an urban orchard of over 250 fruit trees - apples, plums, pears, gages, quinces and nuts.

• 500g Parsnips• 2 Large Carrots• 2 Large White Onions• 2 Cloves Of Fresh Garlic• 2 Large Apples (Sweet Variety)• Fresh Coriander• Cumin• Fresh Chilli's• White Crusty Bread• Plain White Flour• Rapeseed Or Olive Oil• Salt And Pepper

• Peel the onions, carrots, parsnips and apples.• Chop the onions and add to a frying pan on a low heat with a little oil and two cloves of fresh garlic, cut into slithers or grated. • Add 1 chopped fresh chili. • Once the onions are soft, add the grated parsnips, carrots and apples. Continue to cook on a low heat until soft.• Remove from the heat and then add a generous handful of fresh coriander and just a teaspoon of cumin. Follow this by adding half a loaf of grated or blended white bread, Blend until the bread is in crumb form.• Stir the mix and add in a generous pinch of salt and some corse ground black pepper.• The mixture should now be sticky if enough bread crumb has been added, not wet.• Leave the mixture to cool.• Once completely cold, spoon out the mixture and using your hands and shape into burger patties, 4oz or 6oz patties are usually best.• Dust both sides with seasoned flour and grill or fry until firm and golden.• Serve in a toasted bun or a toasted and cut French bread baton.• Serve with spicy tomato salsa and potato wedges.

The rain let up long enough for one small corner of the former Perelli cables site to step back in time to the 1940s as Loftus Garden Village was launched.

Tea, biscuits and wonderful entertainment from the marvellous Siren Sisters were the order of the day as residents and partners

celebrated the story of Ruby Loftus and the site on which Loftus Garden Village will be built.

Giving a real flavour of what will be a revolutionary housing development in Newport, the launch event in September was enjoyed by old and young alike, thanks to the excellent Second World War displays and the unveiling of the project.

Seren Group purchases the now derelict land and announces plans for Newport’s first Garden Village.

South Wales Argos reports that a travellers site has been set up on the land.

The Pirelli Factory closes, a devastating blow to the local economy.

Italian company Pirelli take control of the Factory from Standard Telephones and Cables Limited.

The site and factory is taken over by Standard Telephones and Communications.

Labour Minister Ernest Bevin visits the ROF factory in Newport.

The homes at Loftus Garden Village have been designed in the style of the Arts and Crafts movement.

Popular through from the mid-1800s until just before the First World War, the movement was a rebellion against mass-produced homes and buildings that all looked the same.

The vision of arts and crafts house focused closely on high-quality materials combined with a feel of handcrafting, as well as different designs and textures.

Pretty, decorative and well-made Arts and Crafts houses brought a new lifestyle and feel to communities.

Arts and Crafts houses have a real ‘cottage feel’ to them. Very pretty from the outside,

the interior has the same feel – very homely, warm and welcoming.

Built using traditional methods, they’re quintessentially British.

The Garden Village Movement came about at around the same time as the Arts and Crafts Movement.

A break away from the dense, over populated industrial towns and cities that were born out of the Industrial Revolution, garden villages offered green space, sunlight and space for children to run around and play.

Loftus Garden Village combines these two movements beautifully.

With 60 per cent of the site planned as green space, it will be an oasis and a sanctuary for the community that will develop there, and something very special for the city of Newport.
