“Here’s To Hoping You Try The Unconventional”

Chamber Celebrates One “GRAND” Year

A celebration filled with accomplishments, success of area businesses, great food, a fantastic keynote speaker and 1,000 plus members was felt throughout the Dothan Area Chamber of Commerce’s 97th Annual Meeting held Oct. 11, at Wiregrass Church. It was one “GRAND” celebration!

Over 350 members attended the luncheon featuring beautiful table centerpieces symbolic of products produced by Georgia Pacific, the event’s Diamond Sponsor. The unique centerpieces were assembled from raw materials such as pine tree cuttings and end products including tissues. As an added bonus, each attendee’s seat contained a backpack filled with Georgia Pacific products like Dixie Ultra plates and Vanity Fair napkins.

Event highlights included Forrest Register, Register Realty Co. Inc., officially passing the gavel to Scott Applefield, Aero-One Aviation, Full Moon Bar-B-Que and Bojangles’. In his role as DACC chairman, Register focused on the continuation of economic growth within the Wiregrass, supporting workforce development and advancing education.

During his outgoing remarks, Register stated, “What a blessing this past year has been. By all measurers our organization has continued to grow as our community has prospered and our economic development efforts have added over $240 million in new investment and 1,200 new jobs to our regional economy.”

Past year successes include the Dothan Regional Airport and CAE’s investment of over $70 million with 100 new jobs, the addition of $145 million and 800 new jobs in the area’s poultry business, the addition of new Sheet Metal and Agricultural Technical programs at Wallace Community College, and the continued support of DACC members and the growth of the organization to over 1,000 members.

Register concluded his remarks with one request to the membership, “… allow yourself to envision just how many blessings we have in our community. And in the spirit of gratitude, allow in yourselves a renewed optimism, and believe that the best days of our community and our organization are still ahead of us.”

Accepting the gavel as DACC Chairman and quoting John Quincy Adams, Applefield stated, “ ‘If you actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader.’ Clearly I am following in the footsteps of many great leaders in Dothan’s history.” He went on to pledge to do his best effort to uphold the lofty standards that have been set by those that have come before him.

Applefield closed with a Chinese Proverb that sums up much of the DACC”s focus, “One generation plants the tress, another gets the shade.” Adding “It’s each of our jobs to plant the tress of education, infrastructures and leadership so our forest will continue to develop and grow strong. So the generation that follows us can continue to enjoy the shade.”

Highlighting this year’s Annual Meeting was guest speaker Jim Hannan, leader of the Fortune 500 Company Georgia-Pacific. As CEO and president, he leads one of the world’s leading manufacturing

and marketers of tissue, packaging, pulp, paper, cellulose, nonwovens, building products and related chemicals. Since its founding in 1927, GP has never stopped growing.

During his remarks, Hannan talked about innovative ways to run a business including encouraging a culture of change within and running it with humility. That it’s okay to be uncoventional at times. “Technology is evolving and the opportunity to provide customers with service is exploding as long as we are ready for it,” he said. “In the market most innovations feed off of ideas and when you think about the future, technology is a critical part of that.”

In closing, Hannon gave Chamber members a little homework. Members were asked to ask themselves two questions: Am I running toward that unconventional? Or am I running away from change. “Here’s to hoping you try the unconventional,” he concluded.

Some additional luncheon highlights included the long-awaited announcement of the Chamber’s 2016 Small Business Person of the Year – Zack Whaley, owner of Zack’s Family Restaurant and Catering, who was one of three finalists announced during the DACC’s Small Business Week held in May. See page 14 for more information about the announcement.

Special recognition was also given to the Chamber’s 2016 Star of the Year – Kassie Glover, Avadian Credit Union; and the Ambassador and Diplomat Team of the Year – Risky Business. Congratulations to team members Jo Ann Kirkland, AFLAC; Julian Palmer, Scotts Ortho Miracle-Gro; Faye Turner, MidSouth Paving; Donnie Wells, The Real Estate Group; and Kyle Woodham, The Dothan Eagle See page 5 for Star and Team pictures.

A special thank you to our annual meeting sponsors: Diamond – Georgia-Pacific, Platinum – CapSouth Partners and SunSouth Bank, Gold – Alabama Municipal Electric Authority and HEALTHSOUTH Rehabilitation and Silver – Alden Services and Wiregrass Electric Coooperative.

Dothan Area Chamber of Commerce Chairman Scott Applefield, Aero-One Aviation, Full Moon Bar-B-Que and Bojangles’, thanks Outgoing Chairman Forrest Register, Register Realty Co. Inc., for his service and dedication over the past year.

Thanks to all who worked so diligently to make Wiregrass WORKS 2016 a tremendous success with over 4,000 students in attendance and hundreds of volunteers. The team learned a lot and are incorporating the learning into WW17. Now it’s time to plan for an even greater Wiregrass WORKS 2017 edition.

Wiregrass WORKS 2017 is on the books for Tuesday - Thursday, Feb. 21-23, 2017 at the National Peanut Festival Fairgrounds and the steering committee has already met to begin putting plans into place. 1. Listening to the experience operators,

volunteers and businesses, the committee has added the following for 2017:

2. an additional day to the schedule so students can spend more time at each experience;

3. a Junior and Senior Night Wednesday, Feb. 22, for the high school juniors and seniors to attend with their parents to review job opportunities;

4. plans to host a job fair Wednesday night, Feb. 22, for the companies who would like to hold a job-hiring fair; and

5. three additional counties each from Georgia (Early, Miller, Seminole) and Florida (Holmes, Jackson, Washington).

Sponsors at all levels are also needed for the 2017 event. If interested in being a sponsor, contact Bart Liddon at (334) 596-9500 or Mike Tew at (334) 790-3206

Feedback on ideas for 2017 is also appreciated. You can provide your feedback to the steering committee.

Readers are encouraged to mark their calendars and be sure to save the dates for Wiregrass WORKS 2017.

Wiregrass Hope Group is excited to announce that the Benham Brothers will be their keynote speakers for its upcoming Fundraising Dinner Tuesday, Nov. 15, at Wiregrass Church. Twin brothers, David and Jason Benham, are former professional baseball players, best-selling authors, speakers and nationally acclaimed entrepreneurs.

The brother’s rapid rise to success earned them a reality show with HGTV set to air in the fall 2014 - yet the show was abruptly cancelled because of their commitment to Biblical values. Appearing on CNN, Fox News, ABC’s Nightline and Good Morning America, the Benham’s continue to stand up for what they believe and encourage others to do the same.

The brothers are happily married with a combined nine children and live in Charlotte, North Carolina. Their best-selling book, Whatever the Cost, shares their story along with Biblical principles that equip you to live courageously in today’s culture.

Wiregrass Hope is a resource for extending hope and healing to individuals and families by offering practical assistance, addressing emotional needs and encouraging spiritual growth. Through faith-based and secular programs, WHG has been positively impacting families throughout

the Wiregrass community for almost 34 years. For more information about Wiregrass Hope Group, visit their website at www.wiregrasshopegroup.com.

The dinner is complimentary and an opportunity to make a financial gift will be extended. To make your dinner reservation, to make a donation or to be an underwriter for the evening, contact Sharon Sizemore at (334) 790.9192 or email [email protected].

E&H Steel Corp. is pleased to announce its recent award of the structural steel package for the St. Nicholas National Shrine at Ground Zero in New York City. The original church was destroyed Sept. 11, 2001, when the World Trade Center’s South Tower collapsed.

This will be E&H’s second project for the world-renowned architect Santiago Calatrava. Fabrication of the structure is nearly complete and material deliveries to the site will commence this month.

The 50-foot diameter structural steel dome is this project’s main focal point and will be fully exposed to view in the completed structure. Architecturally exposed structural steel is utilized as an aesthetically pleasing art form and as an integral structural unit.

The dome arches are comprised entirely of curved pipe and plate. The arches are tied together with two very unique compression rings built entirely out of internally stiffened, faceted steel plate sections. Because of the exposed nature of the steel, fabrication is held to unusually tight tolerances. The final result will be a seamless steel superstructure to support the glass and aluminum cladding.

“We are honored and humbled to have been selected as the steel fabricator for such an important and historic project,” said Jed Henderson, E&H Steel’s sales and project manager. “The grand opening of the completed structure is slated for spring 2018.”

E&H Steel celebrates its 30th Anniversary this year and utilizes the experience gained over the last 30 years to ensure that this

project is a success. St. Nicholas Church is the highest labor per ton project that E&H Steel has ever undertaken.

For more information, contact Henderson at (334) 983-5636 or visit www.ehsteel.com, www.stnicholaswtc.org, www.calatrava.com or www.earthcam.com/usa/newyork/saintnicholas/?cam=stnicholas.

The Center for Vein Restoration, the nation’s largest physician-led vein treatment medical practice, is proud to announce the acquisition of Southeast Vein and Laser Center and with it, the expertise of Dr. Kenneth Todd.

Dr. Todd and his practice are a great addition to CVR’s growing family with his 18 years of professional experience treating venous insufficiency, as well as the extension of his highly-trained staff. Dr. Todd is also actively engaged in venous education, research and publishing in the field. Dedicated to relieving leg pain, treating the vascular cause of severe leg wounds and eliminating unsightly veins, CVR’s minimally invasive procedures allow patients to look better, feel better and live better.

SEACT Presents Holiday Dinner Theatre

The Southeast Alabama Community Theatre will present a Holiday Dinner Theatre production of Over the River and Through the Woods Thursday-Friday, Dec. 1-2, and Monday-Saturday, Dec. 5-10, at 5:30 p.m at The Cultural Arts Center.

Nick, a single, Italian-American guy from New Jersey, is like any good Italian grandson, he sees both sets of his grandparents every Sunday for dinner. It’s a weekly routine, until he has to tell them that he’s been offered a dream job. A job he’s been waiting for that would take him away from his beloved, but annoying, grandparents.

The news doesn’t sit so well. Thus begins a series of schemes to keep Nick around. The four grandparents get to work, even inviting the lovely (and single) Caitlin to dinner.

Join SEACT for a delicious Italian-themed meal and experience this warm, nostalgic and funny story. Tickets are $40 each, which includes dinner and dessert. SEACT’s Holiday Dinner Theatre is a great seasonal treat for supper clubs, families and office parties.

The latest Alabama Department of Labor, Region 10, occupational projections, which go out to 2022, estimate that by 2022 there will be 11,210 more jobs in the region than there were in 2012. The increased numbers of jobs are created by growth, but that does not provide the full picture for job openings, as jobs will become vacant for various reasons and replacements will fill the positions.

A full 72 percent of projected job openings are expected to be due to replacement needs, meaning the total number of workers that will be placed throughout the projection period is 40,035. The occupational groups and their projected annual job openings through 2022 are listed in Table 1. The projected employment in wage and salary occupations within Region 10, in 2022, is 151,750. As of August 2016, reported regional employment is 134,543. This number does not count, nor do the projections consider, non-employee workers such as sole-proprietors, which in 2014, the latest year reported, was 20,315.

Congratulations to Zack Whaley, owner of Zack’s Family Restaurant and Catering, who was recently named the Dothan Area Chamber of Commerce’s 2016 Small Business Person of the Year at the organization’s 97th Annual Meeting.

Born and raised in Warsaw, North Carolina, Whaley is the fifth child out of six and moved to Dothan when he was 10. He remembers working as a dishwasher at popular restaurant at age 11. By age 18, he had worked in every area of a restaurant and decided to move on to factory life for the next 13 years.

As life worked out, Whaley began his own restaurant. Getting started, he had to use his last $200 for change for the register. Through many hours of hard work and prayer, he has survived many obstacles. Thanks to his wife, Dianne, they have been very blessed. They both feel they have helped many employees. Some being with them for about 18 years.

Whaley says he has the pleasure of working with many young people, watching many of them grow up and venture off to college, including his own two children. His basic philosophy is “plan your work well, work your plan and supervise every step delegated to others. Ask them to do everything with excellence.”

Whaley thanks his customers and the Wiregrass for blessing his family with their patronage over the years. He hopes they have been a blessing to you in some small way.

Congratulations To Our 2016 Small Business Person Of The YearZack Whaley
