2. Pass/Fail scenariosA module usually includes two or more components (e.g. component A and component B). In order to pass a component on an undergraduate program of study, students must achieve a minimum mark of 35%. To pass the module overall students must achieve a total module mark of 40% or more. Students who achieve an overall module mark of 40% but who do not achieve the minimum mark of 35% for a Component have not passed the module. However, if the overall module mark is less than 40%, to pass a component, students must achieve 40% or more for the component.- Ranking:o 70% or above: First classo 60% to 70%: Second class (Upper Division)o 50% to 60%: Second class (Lower Division)o 40% to 50%: Third class

3. Resit and RetakeStudents that fail a module are known as “Referred” students under UWE Bristol’s terminology. The examining boards have responsibility for ratifying student module marks. Once the official marks are released following the examining board meetings a student will know whether they have failed a module or one of its component. The academic regulations limit the number of times a student can try to pass a module. After their first “go” at trying to pass a module any student that fails has an automatic right to a second “go”. The second go is known as a “resit”.Students complete their “resit” during the “refer-ral assessment period”. • Students whose official result for a module is “1RALL” must complete all pieces of “referral assessment” for the module. • Students whose official result for a module is “1RA” must complete all pieces of “referral assessment” for Component A (e.g. exam). • Students whose official result for a module is “1RB” must complete all pieces of “referral assessment” for Component B (e.g. coursework). For instance:

Note that marks for resit pieces of assessment are capped at 40% for students. If a student has submitted a request for consideration of extenuating circumstances it is possible that the mark may be uncapped. This decision is taken by the award board panel. If a student fails their resit they have an automatic right to “retake” the module. Students retaking a module must repeat the module in its entirety. This means that they repeat the modules teaching sessions and all pieces of assessment required for it. Within the “retake”, the student is allowed two further opportunities – a first sit and a resit. If they fail both of these, the student will be required to withdraw.Overall marks for retaken modules are capped at 40% for students. If a student has submitted a request for consideration of extenuating circumstances it is possible that the mark may be uncapped. This decision is taken by the award board panel. If a student runs out of “goes” at passing a module their official result will be shown as “RW”. This means that the student is “required to withdraw” from the module. In the event that the module is a compulsory part of the programme the student will also be required to withdraw from the programme i.e. they can no longer attend and it will not be possible for them to achieve the award. You may find the following table helpful to explain the process:

Submission of CourseworkStudents are required to submit their coursework/assessment to IU lecturers by the due date and time set (usually by 2:00pm local time). The academic regulations permit students to submit coursework assessments up to a maximum of 24 hours after the deadline date and time set. Any coursework assessments submitted more than 24 hours after the deadline should not be accepted and a student should be recorded as having made no submission.Unless students have extenuating circumstances which relate to their late submission, their mark for the particular element (piece of assessment) will be capped for the purposes of calculating the component and overall module mark. For modules relating to an undergraduate programme of study the element is capped at 40%. If a student is awarded a mark less than 40% no penalty is applied.

5. Extenuating Circumstances It is the personal responsibility of each student to undertake the required assessments for their programme of study within the timescale set out by their institution. However it is recognised that at times students may encounter major situations which affect their ability to sit an exam or submit a piece of coursework or other assessment. These situations are known as “extenuating circumstances”. If a student experiences significant personal difficulty or circumstances which impact on their ability to complete, submit or attend a specific assessment which are outside of their control then they should submit an
