President’s Report

"Great discoveries and improvements invariably involve the cooperation of many minds." - Alexander Graham Bell

Hey, this is the month we’ve been waiting for! Hope springs eternal, it’s time to launch the boat and begin our boating and fishing season. If you’relike me you’ve been getting your boat and fishing equipment ready for a while. If you’re a procrastinator, get busy. Excited?

Our annual spring pizza party is only a few days away, I hope to see everyone there. We usually have about 125 folks show up at this meeting, amazing how free pizza is such an allure. Dave Engle from Best Chance is our speaker again this year, thanks Dave! You won’t find a better speakeron fishing Lake Michigan and I’m sure Dave will talk about the forecast for this year’s fishing and state of the lake from his Michigan perspective.

The coho season is off and running in Indiana waters and after last year’s epic rainbow trout fishing on our side of the lake I’m hopeful we see something similar this year, but only the good Lord knows.

Our Pass the Passion Tournament now has a $7500first place guarantee. You really need to make this year’s tourney part of your summer plans. Free slips await every boat who enters should you want one. Waukegan has some great bands scheduled to perform all 3 days of the festival and this looks to be our best run tournament yet, please come out and be part of the fun. http://www.salmonunlimitedinc.com/pass-the-passion

Unfortunately, there is a new $10 fee this year to launch your boat at Northpoint Marina. I guess thiswas inevitable, but disappointing to many I’m sure. Still cheaper than Waukegan.

Westrec is well underway at sprucing up the landscaping at Northpoint and fixing the long list of maintenance items at the marina that have needed attention for some time. We at Salmon Unlimited applaud their efforts and wish them wellin their new management function at the harbor.

All the best,

Jim Nelligan

President

Northern Ice Fishing Adventure

Donna and I recently went on another ice fishing adventure in the SnoBear with our friend Steve. This time we went to the Northwest Angle and stayed at a place called Flag Island resort. The island is located in Minnesota however we had to cross the Canadian border to get to it. We crossed the border andtraveled another 100 miles to get back in the U.S/ Minnesota. The Northwest angle is the northernmost part of the United States. It is incredible up there! The scenery was awesome and the fishing was even more incredible than we anticipated.

The first day we decided to target walleye and sauger. The trails were marked by fence stakes on the ice. Every resort has their own fence post color which made it very easy to find our way. The area is so vast that one needs to stick to the ice roads to get around safely. The Lake of the Woods has 14,522 islands. Withplenty of ice, 30” or so, we were pretty sure we would be safe to travel, there were open waters in various ar-eas though. On the first day we left the cabin around 7:30 am, but really didn't know where to go so we stopped at the lodge and asked for some help. Boy, wasthat the right thing to do. The owners, Andrea and Chuck, were busy at the bar serving breakfast and making sure all their clients had everything they need-ed for the day. They also run agreat guide ser-vice with allkinds of trackedvehicles includ-ing snowmo-biles, Tahoes andBombardiers. They take theirclients out to theresort's perma-nent fish houseswhich are al-

ready set up in their favorite fishing spots. Chuck showed me on the map where to fish and what areas to avoid. He also said if we want to catch walleye, we should follow their guides who were heading to the promised land, so we loaded up and off we went.

We traveled 14 miles on the marked ice road until we got to where the permanent shanties were. We stayed far enough away from the permanent shacks and set up on a nice spot and, whammo! Before we knew it we had our limits of walleye and sauger, all within a couple of hours. We also caught some nice eelpout and some jumbo perch. We left before the group did, but with all the great trail markers, we didn't need help to get back to our cabin. The next day we had re-served a guide for the day. We were heading into Cana-dian waters and didn't know exactly what to expect or how to get into Canada, but more importantly how to get back in the states. We figured a guide for the day would be beneficial. The guides had the procedure all figured out and yes, you must call & check into Cana-da and let them know where you are going and what you are doing.

We wanted to go to Canada for the day because everyone was talking about how great the crappie fish-ing was up there. After seeing the size of the crappies in the nice warm fish cleaning facility, we couldn't waitto see for ourselves. We traveled around 18 miles to getthere, with some of the most beautiful scenery I've everseen in the northwoods in the winter. We set up on mudflats 34 feet deep. We were only allowed 10 crappie each and since we were fishing so deep, we had to keep the crappies because they would not survive the trip back down the fishing hole. It didn't take us long tocatch our limit. Our guide for the day was Dan Schmidt. Dan has been guiding the area for 40 years. He was a wealth of information. He was not shy on an-swering every question we threw out. After we were done with our crappies, he set us up on a nice point. We only needed 8 walleye to get back to our limit since we ate 8 walleye the night before.

We fished for about 2 hours and we were done. I also caught two 4 lb smallies. I have been ice fishing my entire life from the days of having a lump of coal in a coffee can and an auger, that after cutting one hole you were completely worn out for the day. Boy, have things changed with today's technology and ice augers.Normally in the winter, fish are very lethargic but up inthe angle, these fish were hungry. Most fish usually come and sniff your bait but not up there. The fish were there for one reason, to eat and to their surprise that's what I was there to do as well. The crappies aver-aged 13 inches with an occasional 15 incher. We did not catch any monster walleye or crappie, but we sure had a great time! We will definitely be going back!

I would just like to give a big shout out to An-drea and Chuck Haggenmiller, the owners of the Flag Island Resort. They purchased the resort a year ago andare doing an amazing job. Keep up the good work guys! We noticed and appreciated all your hard work and it really showed. The resort was very clean and theentire staff was very friendly and accommodating. The cabins were clean and nicely equipped with everythingwe needed and, on occasion when we did need some-

thing, Chuck and the staff were always there to help. Even when we needed extra groceries and more cham-pagne! No trip is complete without some bubbly! Don-na is convinced the bubbly helps catch the fish/get their attention. That's what she says. Haha! The food inthe restaurant was incredible. Thanks to Kiok, the cook. Thanks again to all! We plan on heading back upthere in the fall. We were told that the open water fish-ing up there was nothing short of awesome. We spoke to many visitors, many of who were repeat customers, and everyone was very happy with the service and the staff and, of course,... the fishing! The only thing that would have made the trip perfect was if we saw the northern lights. Unfortunately, we were a few days too late. A few days prior to our arrival, they saw spectacu-lar northern lights display. Bummer! Anyhow, it's greatto see there are places you can travel to and not have toworry about anything... just relax and have a great time. Until the next adventure....Jawzon!!
