******************************** Letter from our Rector:

Dear friends,

We long for the hot warm weather of Summer .......... and then when it comes it is too hot or our gardens are too dry - then we long for cooler nights and water for our gardens.

Are we ever happy?

At school many of us longed for it to be over with all the homework and pressure of exams - when it was over and we got a job was it any better? Or when we retired and took up childcare duties for our grandchildren?

Are we ever happy?

Or when we longed for more money in our pay packet, but now have more demands on our money and still don't seem well-off?

Are we ever happy?

St Augustine of Hippo famously said: You have made us for yourself, O Lord, and our hearts are restless until they rest in you.

St Augustine recognised that our hearts are by their nature Continued……

dissatisfied and to find true contentment we need to seek God. To truly find God in prayer or in a service in church or just quietly on a mountainside is to truly know that we need nothing else. I pray that you may all find this contentment ... contentment that can only be found in God.

With best wishes,

ST MARY’S CHURCH BELLS RINGING REPORT

The bells will be rung on the following dates:

Sunday 2nd August: 9.15am to 10.00am

Sunday 16th August: 9.15am to 10.00am

Sunday 6th September: 9.15am to 10.00am

On Saturday 13th June, Freeland Ringers took part in the 6-bell Striking Competition hosted by Ducklington. The competition comprises ringing one method and one call changes piece. Freeland came third in the call changes out of five, and we were only five faults away from second place. The best result was putting in an ALL Freeland band to ring the method, and a full 120 touch of Plain Bob was rung. This is really good progress, especially as no mistakes were made! We were against four other very experienced bands so were placed 5/5. The 3,4,5 places were probably once again very close on the faults. North Leigh came second, a great result and their band included two Freeland ringers. Well done.

On Sunday 5th July Freeland ringers, Neil Ephgrave, Michael Probert, Val Atherton, Andrew Smith, Melanie McGregor and Sue Hall completed 1260 Plain Bob Doubles (the requirement for a Quarter Peal) in 44 minutes. This was rung to celebrate the ordination of Sue Spankie and Mike Print to the diaconate and for the Dedication Festival of St Mary the Virgin, Freeland. This was a first treble to a quarter peal for Val Atherton and first quarter peal as an all Freeland Band. This has been recorded on the official Campanophile website (www.campanophile.co.uk).

On Saturday 29th August a joint branch practice will take place from 4pm to 6pm.

Usual practice every Monday from 7.30pm until 9pm.

FF6 takes place on Fridays from 6pm to 7pm, except where a practice falls immediately before a Saturday practice.

Please contact the Tower Captain, Neil Ephgrave (883850) or myself should you wish to discuss any bell ringing matters.

You can see more about Freeland Bell Ringers under the “Clubs and Groups” section of the village website www.freelandoxon.co.uk

OUR SPECIAL FESTIVAL IN AUGUST is the celebration of the day the Blessed Virgin Mary went to heaven. It is called the Feast of the Assumption and in most of Europe it is so important it is a Public Holiday. In England we often transfer the celebration to a Sunday, so we will celebrate it on Sunday 16th August the day after the official date. Mass as usual at 10am

EVERYONE SEEMED TO ENJOY our BBQ Lunch and Fete the other Sunday. Our thanks to the many people who came, even our local Catholic Policeman with his wife and son, and his Sergeant! Special thanks to Mark Hull, Margaret Stevens and Catherine Baker who organised this for us. We made £900 for Church Funds.

MARGARET LUSINSKA (Ruzia Calley and Tres Cantwell’s Mum from Standlake) who was a regular at St Peter’s for many many years, died on 22nd June having received the Last Rites. Her Funeral Mass was on Friday 3rd July at 3.00pm and Ruzia and Tres are very grateful to those who organized the magnificent Tea that followed the Funeral.

OUR THURSDAY MORNING BIBLE STUDY and THURSDAY EVENING BIBLE SHARE will not take place in August. They begin again on Thursday 3rd September. Both take place at Father Martin’s Home which is 54 Hazeldene Close, Eynsham OX29 4AD. Father Martin’s House is like!

AUGUST OASIS is 3 Days of Activities for the over 60’s organised by the 3 Churches of Eynsham. You can go for one day or all three as you prefer. It runs from Tuesday 18th August – Thursday 20th August. It includes a full lunch and tea and cakes in the afternoon, Details and Application Forms are at the back of Church as pre-Booking is essential. St Peter’s provide the cakes and Father Martin does the Epilogue on the Wednesday. The other Churches do the same on the other days.

TWO IMPROVEMENTS TO OUR BUILDINGS are in process over the next few months. First, a window is being put into the Sacristy to bring natural light (and air in the summer) into the room thus making it more pleasant as a place for our Priest to meet and talk to people now he no longer lives on site. We are also planning to remodel the Tolkien Room Kitchen so that it has better facilities for those who have to cater for some of our events. Margaret Stevens will be asking suggestions from those interested once she returns from Tanzania in August.

IN HIS ENCYCLICAL POPE FRANCIS has spoken about the little things we can all do to care for our planet, as well as the big things politicians should do. This includes using less electricity by turning off lights and other appliances when not in use. The Finance Committee recently discussed the old electric heaters in the Tolkien Room, and how the Storage Heater element in them has to be on permanently for more than 7 months each year, despite that fact that the Hall is only used about 3 or 4 times per week plus Sundays after Mass. We are therefore considering the possibility of installing modern electric heaters on some sort of timing system. If you know of anyone who could help Father Martin work out which system might be best for this, please let him know.

FREELAND PARISH COUNCIL - PLANNING UPDATE As the next Parish Council meeting will not be held until 20th July (past the Grapevine deadline), here is a quick update on any planning applications or planning decisions received since the last meeting.

Planning Applications: All planning applications can now be viewed on line from the Village Website at www.freelandoxon.co.uk (under Planning Applications) or via the WODC website at www.westoxon.gov.uk/planning. You can also contact the Planning Team at WODC on 01993 861420 and view the documents at Woodgreen Council Offices.

Applications Received: 15/02135/OUT LAND BETWEEN WYCHWOOD HOUSE AND MALVERN VILLAS, WITNEY ROAD, FREELAND. Outline planning application for residential development of up to 29 dwellings for Daniel Family Homes (means of access only) – see below for a brief summary.

Applications Approved: 15/01708/HHD 2 CHURCH VIEW, FREELAND. Erection of single storey rear extension for Mr Welford.

15/00986/HHD 24 CHURCH VIEW, FREELAND. Single storey rear extension for Mr & Mrs B Hunt.

Applications Withdrawn: None.

Applications Refused: 15/00908/FUL 35 PIGEON HOUSE LANE, FREELAND. Erection of a dwelling for Miss Jennifer Cherry.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Daniel Family Homes Application 15/02135/OUT Terry Daniel has submitted the above planning application for a residential development of up to 29 dwellings and for the means of access onto the A4095. This application will be discussed in more detail at the Parish Council meeting on Monday 20th July. I can confirm that the current application will be considering both the means of access and the number of houses. The layout of the site, appearance of the houses, landscaping and other details as shown on the application are for illustration purposes only and will be considered at a later stage under a separate planning application, should this initial one be successful.

A brief summary of the application to date: Terry Daniel made an approach to Freeland residents via a letter back in March this year. He was invited to present his proposals at the Annual Parish Meeting (APM) in April where he presented two schemes– one for 29 homes, with 14 of the 29 houses to be set aside as affordable housing, and the other scheme for 8 large family homes with no affordable housing element incorporated. A show of hands was taken at the APM to gauge support for each option. Over 30 residents were in support of the 29 house scheme - after some modifications, 7 residents were in support of the 8 house scheme, and 20 residents were in support of leaving the field undeveloped.

Continued…….. Subsequent to that meeting, Terry Daniel found out from WODC that only 2 of the 14 affordable houses would be likely to be sold to people connected with Freeland village. He therefore subsequently removed the affordable element from his plans and instead he circulated revised plans showing 8 larger houses spread out all over the site and he proposed providing affordable housing by buying the Parklands shop site and building 10 small flats which would be outside the WODC rules (as being 10 or less) and could be offered to people with Freeland connections. The idea of such tiny flats, however, seems to have gathered little support from those wanting affordable houses. No further information regarding the Parklands site has been received and therefore cannot be considered further at this stage.

At their meeting on 18th May, after hearing a presentation from affected residents and receiving a petition signed by 271 residents the Parish Councillors voted not to support the proposals as it was felt this site offered no overriding benefit to the village as a whole.

The Parish Council will be producing an appropriate response on 20th July to the current Planning Application which will then be submitted to the WODC Planning Team (who make the final decision whether to grant planning permission).

If you wish to make any comments regarding the plans, you can do so by contacting Catherine Tetlow, the WODC Planning Officer who is dealing with the application on 01993 861655 or email at [email protected] . The plans can be viewed online from the Village Website at www.freelandoxon.co.uk (under Planning Applications) or via the WODC website at www.westoxon.gov.uk/planning , or by visiting the Woodgreen Council offices.

Freeland Little Free Library Update A Little Free Library is currently being built (having been organised by Councillor Matthew Ruddle), and should be up and running sometime in August. It is Grant aided by West Oxfordshire District Council and will be located by the hedge outside 138 Wroslyn Road, which is about halfway between the pub and the school, and close to a couple of bus stops. For regular updates, follow its progress on Twitter: www.twitter.com/LFLfreeland or visit the Facebook page: www.facebook.com/FreelandLittleFreeLibrary. There will be a launch party for the Little Free Library on Saturday 5th September, 11am until noon, at 138 Wroslyn Road. More information to follow soon!

Contacting the Council & Date of Next Meeting: Next council meeting will be held on Monday 21st September 2015 at 7.30pm in the Newell Room. Please note this time and venue is subject to change; please check the village website and noticeboards for the final agenda up to five days before the meeting in case of alterations.

If you wish to contact the Parish Council about a particular matter and have access to the internet, please have a look at the village website where lots of useful information is held. The website can be accessed via www.freelandoxon.co.uk. Alternatively, please contact me between the hours of 9.00am – 5.00pm, Monday to Friday - Lisa Smith, Parish Clerk on 01993 880067 or email [email protected].

1st HANBOROUGH FREELAND SCOUT GROUP

The weekend of 26th, 27th and 28th June was the West Oxfordshire District (WOD) Camp at Horley, near Banbury.

All sections from 1st Hanborough Freeland were represented with 13 Beavers, 17 Cubs, 20 Scouts, 6 Explorers and 15 Leaders attending what turned out to be a thoroughly enjoyable weekend. It was so good to see all the sections mixing together, with the older children looking out for the younger ones and everyone having fun together. Our friends from Witney TV were there again to capture the event – check out www.witneytv.co.uk/videos/wodcamp-2015

There were so many activities and games on offer over the weekend, it would take the whole of this report to list them all. As well as the fun fair with helter-skelter, coconut shy and giant inflatables, there were traditional games and activities like tug-o-war, stilt-walking and abseiling alongside new activities such as space-hopper football, gyroscopes and mini-diggers!

Congratulations must go to Arthur Quartermain who won the Scalextric Racing Challenge, Sam Stapleton who won the air rifle shooting and the Explorers who won the tug-o-war. Special congratulations also to our Cubs who won the prestigious Michael Roper Shield. This is awarded in recognition for the Best Camp Fire Entertainment, which the pack’s self-directed ‘chewing gum skit’ won the award for the first time in 1st Hanborough Freeland’s history.

We are very fortunate to have such an active Scout group in our village – but we have an ever-growing waiting list of young people who want to join, which we unfortunately can’t accommodate at this time. We are getting very close to having enough boys and girls to open a second group…but we need leaders! Whether we increase the capacity of our sections or even one day open a ‘2nd Hanborough Freeland’ – we need volunteers to help run the different sections. If you feel you can help in any capacity, please contact Adam, our Group Section Leader, on [email protected]

However much time you can offer, however frequently or whatever skills you have, we can make great use of them in offering more places to more young people in our village. Thank you. Steve Mellin, Publicity representative

THE FREELAND PHOTO GROUP The Photo Group is not meeting in August but for the latest news of our activities and programme for September plus a showcase of some of our recent work, please go to: https://www.flickr.com/groups/freelandgroup/

Or email [email protected]

************************************** FREELAND GARDENING CLUB Howard Drury, who was booked to come to us in February, had to pull out because of an injury, so he came on 22nd June instead to talk about ‘The Fragrant Garden and it’s Plants’. I don’t think many of us realised how many plants there were in this group. Many are shrubs or bushes as of course roses are, but there are also many flowers as well, not to mention herbs. He showed slides of many of them as well. It is disappointing that many of the new roses do not smell but of course most of the old fashioned ones have a lovely scent.

In June we also had our second day trip out, this time to Snowshill Lavender Fields in the morning followed by Hidcote Manor in the afternoon. Unfortunately we were about 2 weeks too early for many of the lavender varieties to be out, but it was still an enjoyable experience, particularly as far as the lavender shortbread and ice cream was concerned. Hidcote is a National Trust garden of many ‘rooms’ some of single colour plants and flowers. There were also many other wonderful summer displays and features to enjoy.

Very many thanks to Ray and Jill for their lovely display on behalf of the Club at the St Mary’s Flower Festival.

On 27th July Roger Umpelby’s talk in Freeland Hall at 7.30pm is entitled ‘ Useful, beautiful but unloved. An alternative look at weeds’. This sounds an intriguing subject which many of us wouldn’t agree with, but maybe he will encourage to take a closer look at some of the interlopers before putting them on the compost heap!

The Club Social takes place during August when an evening of good food, a few games and lots of chatter takes place.

On 10th September a trip to Wisley RHS Gardens takes place. It is also the occasion of their Flower Show so should be a wonderful day out. Bookings have already started and, as this is likely to be a popular trip, early booking is advised. Brian will be taking bookings at the July meeting or contact him on 883968. Visitors very welcome.

Bring and Buy Plant Sale at the Hall meetings, visitors very welcome at £3 a meeting.

For any further information about the Freeland Gardening Club contact Ray and Jill Evans at 99 Wroslyn Rd or ring 881420.

COOKING UP A SUMMER TREAT The hall was abuzz for our meeting on Monday 13th July for the much anticipated return visit of Amanda Belz. Amanda's demonstration of Festive Cookery last year was such a great success that we immediately invited her back to do a summer session for us and we were not disappointed it was another great evening.

Amanda demonstrated how to present focaccia bread, she made corn bread, different summer salads, sweet and savoury tarts, chicken main course and even a quick ice cream. Amanda and her daughter, brought in to help out, were a great double act keeping us amused with their banter as they prepared dishes in rapid succession.

To top off this entertaining evening we sampled the different foods including an ice cream made earlier in the day – no calories in ice cream are there?

Amanda is a trainer at Oxford Brookes University and heads up The Cookery School. We are very fortunate that she lives in Freeland and is willing to do these demonstrations for us,

So where next , what next?

Well our next get together is an outing to Aston Pottery to have supper in their lovely restaurant then look round the amazing border with Stephen Baughan, the owner, who not only designed them but planted the borders too. Twenty members have already signed up and paid for this outing but if you do fancy coming it's not too late to let us know. Please call Rosie James on 01993 881997 to book your place. We plan to meet in the Village Hall car park on Monday 10th August at 5.45pm to organise some car sharing, we anticipate being back in Freeland at around 10 pm.

On Friday 11th September we are organising a Quiz night in the village hall to which we are inviting teams from other organisations in the village. This is our first village wide event so prompt your husbands and friends to get organised with teams and come along to a night at the WI.

The Freeland WI meet on the second Monday of each month in Freeland Village Hall, meetings start at 8pm. We are a friendly group from all age groups who enjoy a variety of activities and interests. Details of our programme and activities, past and future ,can be found on the web site at http://freelandwi.weebly.com. If you wish to join the Freeland WI or just sample a meeting turn up to any meeting and you will be made very welcome. Visitors are invited to make a voluntary contribution (usually around £5) to funds.

************************************ THE UNACCEPTED FREELAND RAMBLERS July 2015 A spectacular turn out this month resulted in crowds of people and a dog refusing to walk by the river as I had instructed. So, instead we groped our way through long grass and stinging nettles. One advantage of this foolishness was that we discovered moths and butterflies in profusion. Matron was consulted about a couple of lumps that had appeared on Trevor’s legs, but we were assured that these were only his knee caps. Two other things have been drawn to our attention; (1) Next month we celebrate our first year of mindless rambling and something must be done. (2) We should thank our logistics adviser for bravely cobbling together last months newsletter. We should, but there again . . . Our navigation department is to be congratulated on a successful route finding excursion this month which saw us all hitchhiking along the A40 for a mile or so entertaining bemused motorists.

************************************ FREELAND ORCHESTRA CONCERT REVIEW The Freeland Orchestra with West Oxfordshire Winds and West Oxfordshire Clarinets, conducted by Wendy Marks, gave a well-rehearsed and most enjoyable concert in Eynsham Church on 27th June, with a large and appreciative audience. The Orchestra opened proceedings with a lively account of Schubert's 2nd Symphony, producing a light touch, well suited to this early work. The woodwind chords in the opening Largo sounded particularly good, and the subtle key-changes in the final movement were well negotiated. Ian Locke was the accomplished oboe soloist in Godard's Legende Pastorale, cleverly orchestrated by Wendy Marks. Dvorak's attractive American Suite could perhaps have used more body in the strings, not easy with a small number. The lovely 2nd movement was sensitively played.

Next up were the West Oxfordshire Clarinets. I really enjoyed their spirited, gutsy playing, with the added depth provided by the bass clarinets. The phrasing in Sunrise, Sunset was particularly effective.

The West Oxfordshire Winds ended the concert with stylish performances of four contrasting pieces. The meticulous tuning session before they began really paid dividends; the intonation was excellent. I particularly enjoyed Wendy's arrangement of Pachelbel's Canon…good to hear such a well-known piece in a different guise. An excellent trumpet solo in "Wallace and Gromit" ended a really enjoyable concert.

ST MARY’S FLOWER FESTIVAL Sincere thanks to everyone who contributed to the Flower Festival at St Mary’s Church and to all the visitors. The Church looked lovely with the many interpretations of Jesus’s Miracles. Although there were several depicting Water into Wine they were all totally different. Thank you also to those who welcomed people to the Church. The Songs of Praise Service took place the following week when we welcomed Sue Spankie taking her first Communion Service after her recent ordination as a Deacon.

MOBILE LIBRARY - new schedule From July 2015 the Mobile Library will be visiting Freeland on alternate Tuesdays stopping at the Primary School from 11.00am to 12.15pm. It will no longer be stopping at the Village Hall. Upcoming dates are Tuesday 4th & 18th August and Tuesday 1st, 15th & 29th September, and will be shown, as before, in the Forthcoming Events on page 41.

********************************* SHOEBOX TIME IS ALMOST HERE! Last year we sent off over 2,200 boxes generously donated from the schools, churches, businesses and individuals of Witney and the surrounding villages.

Most of the children who receive the boxes live in orphanages, on the street or in very poor villages. Each shoebox can bring so much happiness to a child, who, quite literally has nothing.

Please can you help us again this year to let these children know someone cares about them.

Wrapped shoeboxes and leaflets will be available at High Street Methodist Church, Witney.

The Celebration evening is Monday 16th November, so we would love to receive your boxes before then if possible. Please come along and join us at 6 p.m. Thank you.

********************************* THE CAKE CAFÉ Following on from the success of the Cake Café at Freeland Hall, I am pleased confirm that we will be open on Sunday 9th August in the Hall from 2.30-5.00pm for cream teas, and a selection of cakes. We hope you will be able to join us.

The café will now be a regular village event:

Cake Café - Tuesday 1st September 2015, 9.00-11.30am

Cake Café - Tuesday 13thOctober 2015, 9.00-11.30am

Cake Café - Tuesday 3rd November 2015, 9.00-11.30am

Cake Café - Tuesday 1st December 2015, 9.00-11.30am

And the first Tuesday of the month from January 2016

FREELAND OPEN GARDENS John and Anne Fox thank all their visitors for their company on Saturday 27th June 2015

‘Name this plant’ was a date palm.

The kinds of fruit from plants, shrubs and trees in this garden were: apple, blackberry, black/red/white currants, blueberry, elderberry, fig, gooseberry, grape, hazelnut, loganberry, peach, pear, plum (sugar), quince, raspberry, strawberry (alpine) and walnut.

The winners of the Fruit Quiz were John and Diane Sharland.

We would like to thank Rob and Bridget Crocker for adopting organic farming methods. They have increased considerably the numbers of wild flowers and of birds that regularly visit, nest and sing here, and they have added whole family grazing cattle to the wonderful view.

John and Anne Fox
