New Shildon All Saints’ Baden Powell Scout Group recently enjoyed a visit to the North York Moors Railway for a reenactment of World War II on the railways.
The visit included a Goatland village and railway station, where Americans and the Home Guard established security against invading enemies. “It was fantastic the
amount of effort and detail that the locals had shown in the uniforms, weapons and everyday lives so vividly re-enacted,” said a spokesperson. After lunch, the group visited Grosmont village and station. They had only just arrived when they were directed to a remembrance parade. The Scout group then spent time exploring the railway station, tunnel, soup kitchen and Anderson shelter.A dance exhibition took place on one of the platforms, with the jive and boogie woogie being particularly popular with the youngsters! The spokesperson went on to say, “We would like to thank those who donated and enabled us to enjoy an eventful outing, especially the ‘Buffs’, and to all who participated in Yorkshire. Thank you all.”Anyone interested in joining the Scout group can go along to the Mission Hall (behind the Locomotive pub) on Friday evenings from 6pm onwards.
This October half term holiday, Locomotion: The National Railway Museum at Shildon is holding a celebration of railway races. In addition to a busy programme of craft activities for all the family, available free of charge throughout the holiday, the museum will host a day of railway stories on Friday 2nd November. Activities on the day are part of Durham Book Festival, the North East’s biggest annual celebration of books.Join author and storyteller Adam Bushnell for interac-tive storytelling sessions themed on railway races. Sessions take place at 11am, 1pm and 2pm – it’s free to join in and suitable for all ages.Previously a teacher, Adam has a wealth of experience of bringing classic, modern and original stories to life for a wide range of audiences. He now appears around the
region, inspiring a love of stories and interweaving storytelling sessions with creative writing, drama and art activities.Plus meet Tilly Walker, author of the Steeplejack Fred series of children’s books. Tilly will be at the museum all day and will read extracts from her books at 12 noon and 3pm.Tilly Walker’s family was well known in Bolton for their tannery. During the early years before becoming a household name, stee-plejack Fred Dibnah helped to look after the tannery’s chimneys.Invited to attend one of Fred’s chimney drops in Chorley in 1997, Tilly witnessed at first hand the huge affection that children had for him. This became the inspiration for the creation of a children’s stee-plejack character, an idea which was well received by Fred himself.

Dene Valley One Stop Shop Cafe on Eldon Lane raised £128 for MacMillan Cancer Support at their recent Coffee Morning on Thursday 27th September. Rachel and the staff at the One Stop Shop would like to thank all their customers
Shildon’s young bell ringers last weekend played host to teenage ringers from across the region. Saint John’s Tower Captain Trevor Thompson commented that, “Bell ringing is not just about pulling a rope, it is about music, about friendship, about keeping fit and about maintaining a tradition dating back hundreds of years.” The young people enjoyed
a night of ringing, developing their skills, and learning new techniques. They were also treated to chips, which were kindly provided by the Golden Ocean takeaway in Church Street, as well as pizzas cooked in the church. The bells in Saint John’s were installed back in 1901 and are painted in the colours of the GNER who sponsored the instal-lation. Since then they have rung out for war
and peace, for thousands of weddings, and to call worshippers to prayer on a Sunday morning. Reverend David of Saint John’s said, “These bells belong to our community, and are rung by our community, for our community. It is great to see so many young people so enthusiastic about mastering this ancient art, and they did tell me that Shildon chips were the best too!”
On 18th October, Neil Anthony Bennett, aged 27 of Cedar Grove, Shildon, appeared before Newton Aycliffe Magistrates Court charged with possession of 1g of heroin. The court heard that Bennett had been stopped
and searched by police in Cedar Grove the previous day and found to be in possession of the drug. Bennett pleaded guilty and was given a 6 month con-ditional discharge and the court ordered the destruc-tion of the drug.

Be a part of the AAP success story People across County Durham are invited to attend their local forum events which are taking place for all of the county’s Area Action Partnerships (AAPs) during November. The 14 partnerships are holding the events to establish a list of priorities for the area and decide how money should be spent in the coming year. AAPs have been created to give local people a greater say on what is important to them. It’s a chance for members of the public to help shape the community and prioritise what the partnerships focus on in their local areas. AAPs have been operating for nearly four years and in that time have allocated over £8million to over 600 local projects that tackle issues identified by the community. This includes local environ-mental improvements, creating better opportuni-ties for young people and promoting new health ini-
tiatives. By working in partner-ship with other agencies, AAPs have also levered in £11million of extra resources into County Durham communities. The forum events will give people a chance to direct where budgets are spent for the coming year. Those attending will be asked to rank 10 priorities in order of preference to develop a list of the most important local issues. The list will then be passed to the AAP boards which will decide on the priorities for 2012/13.Cllr Brian Stephens, cabinet member with responsibility for local partnerships, said, “With purse strings tightened and greater pressure being applied to local services, we need to make sure we’re spending money in the right places. The forum events are the residents chance to influence our priorities next year. So we are really encouraging
people to come along and get involved.” Recent external reviews of the AAPs as part of the Local Government Peer Review have highlighted their effectiveness and outlined the high level of commitment to them from local people and partner agencies, all working together for the good of the community. Cllr Stephens added, “If you haven’t yet been involved come along and help us tackle what is most important to you and where you live.” Anyone wishing to attend is asked to contact their AAP in advance. • Great Aycliffe and Middridge – 20th November, 6pm, Newton Aycliffe Youth Centre. Visit Locomotion: The National Railway Museum at Shildon on Saturday 3rd and Sunday 4th November for Cab It! – your chance to access some very special vehicles from the National Collection.Linking in with the museum’s programme for the October half term holiday, the Cab It! event will be themed around a celebration of railway races. The Race to the North is the name given to two summers in the late 19th century when British passenger trains belonging to different companies literally raced each other from London to Scotland over the two principal rail trunk routes – the West Coast Main Line from London Euston via Crewe and Carlisle, and the East Coast Main Line from London King’s Cross via York and Newcastle.During Cab It!, visitors
will be able to get on the footplates of three loco-motives with links to the Race to the North – Stirling Single No. 1, Hardwicke and NER No. 1621.The Great Northern Railway Stirling Single was a class of steam locomotive designed for express passenger work. Designed by Patrick Stirling, they are charac-terised by a single pair of large driving wheels, which led to the nickname “eight footer”. Originally these locomo-tives were designed to haul up to 26 passenger carriages at an average speed of 47 miles per hour, but their top speed, on lighter trains, was around 85 miles per hour. In the 1895 Race to the North, GNR Stirling Single No. 775 made the 82 miles to York in 1 hour and 16 minutes – an average speed of 64.7 miles per hour.Hardwicke is a London and North Western railway
Improved Precedent Class or “Jumbo” Class, designed by FW Webb for express passenger work. On August 22nd 1895, No. 790 Hardwicke took 2 hours and 6 minutes for the 141 miles from Crewe to Carlisle, with an average speed of 67.1 mph, setting up a new speed record during the Race to the North. At the Cab It! event, a knowledgeable team of museum staff and volunteers will be on hand to give you an insight into the life of an engine driver, and answer any questions you might have on these historic vehicles. For a small additional charge, visitors will also be able to enjoy a steam train ride behind Furness Railway No. 20, the oldest standard gauge steam locomotive still working in the UK. For more information contact the museum on 01388 777999.
‘Pits, Pockmarks and Haggerleases’The Friends of the National Railway Museum (North East Branch) are holding a talk on Saturday 24th November. The speaker for the meeting is Chris Lloyd and the topic is ‘Pits, Pockmarks and Haggerleases: the Story of Cockfield Fell’. Cockfield Fell is England’s
largest Ancient Monument, and the whole of the North East’s industrial history is laid out there – coal, coke, railways and rabbits. The talk will follow a tour with a colourful 1850s journalist who ventured along the horse drawn railway into what was then the most backward place in our rapidly industrialised region. All are welcome to attend. Admission and parking at Locomotion is free. For more information, call 01388 771439.

During the schools half term holidays, the Young Enter-tainers’ Wacky Workshop will be taking place at the Sunnydale Leisure Centre on Wednesday 31st October, from 10am to 3pm. A spokesperson said, “This is a fun day of crazy games,
music and lots of laughter for all young people aged 8 to 15 years to enjoy. It costs £1.15 entrance to the Centre. Also we ask the young people to bring a packed lunch and a big smile when they come.” For more information call 01388 774838.
A group of young students, who are based in the Lightfoot Centre in Bishop Auckland, have been working at South Church Nursing and Residential Home garden for the last four weeks. The 15 students, aged between 16 and 25 years-old, have tidied up the garden, painted all the fencing, benches and metalwork, cleaned the gutters, designed and created three large
paintings, all to brighten up the lives of the residents. This is part of a 12 weeks Prince's Trust course run by Stockton Riverside College.Leader Andy Pritchard said, “The students have all worked hard and the garden looks really good. There is a new course starting in January and if anyone who is unemployed and not afraid of a bit of hard work, and would like to join us, please ring me on 01388 664211 or 07553367548,
alternatively, email me on [email protected]”. Andy went on to say “Students are from all over this area, including Shildon, with one student Alex Dodds even travelling daily on the bus from Chester-le-Street.” Anyone attending the course will not see their benefits affected. The next project could possibly be the renovation of Bishop Auckland Train Station.

Shildon Leisure Centre is looking for new teams to join its winter five-a-side league, starting on Thursday 1st November at 7pm.For further information
Shildon Leisure Centre holds a badminton club every Friday from 8.30pm to 10.30pm. “It is open for people of any abilities and is a great way to keep fit and meet new people,” said a spokesperson.
Members of Shildon Running club have attacked the start of the cross country season with a vengeance. Young Chloe Fairclough was the sole member to attend the Jarrow & Hebburn Minors XC at Bedewell Park on 6th October. She was well placed in her Year 5 event, finishing in 6th place with 5.50.Meanwhile, on the same day, Lizzie Wood decided to
sharpen up her speed with a blast around Albert Park run. She was delighted with her time of 21.25, especially as she was 4th lady over the line. The following week saw more members attack the soggy course at Acklam. The NYSD league kick-started the year with yet another memorable combi-nation of wind and rain.U13 Gabrielle Suffield and Chloe Laverick enjoyed their romp finishing close together with 11.45 and 11.50 respectively. U17 Joe Bell showed a vast improvement with his per-formance as he stepped up to the challenge of the distance in his new age category. He was 10th in 22.45. The ladies categories raced
together and Amy Ether-ington showed true grit to finish the 2nd under 17 girl with 23.54. Zoe Hewitson was not put off by the prospect of running in the new category of U20s, and surprised herself with 1st place and 24.42. Lizzie Wood battled the vertical rain and hung in to claim 3rd under 20 with 26.23. Natalie Owens ran well in senior ladies with 25.57. The senior men saw two members start but only one finished as Michael Bleasby dropped out, leaving Dan Hardy to carry the flag for Shildon. Despite recovering from injury himself, Dan finished in 14th place with an amazing time for just over 10k with 40.20.
Shildon AFC were at home to Durham City on Saturday 20th October in the league and won 3 - 1, the same score as when they played Durham away in the F.A. Cup in September. Durham took an early lead after only 6 minutes when a quickly taken free kick found Ricky Fenwick, who fired high and wide past Keith Finch. Shildon responded imme-diately when Ben Wood's shot hit the keeper and rebounded to Danny Richmond who almost broke the net with a vicious drive.
On 16 minutes Ben Wood put Sam Garvie through and he rounded the keeper for 2 - 1 to the Railwaymen. It was end-to-end stuff, but Shildon were defending too deep. Durham could have equalised when Conor Winter had a great chance but shot wide, then Max Stoker had a free header from 8 yards but missed the target. For Shildon, Sam Garvie lobbed the ball over the keeper, but he also missed the target.Half Time: Shildon 2 Durham City 1.Nothing much happened in
the 2nd half until the 64th minute when Ben Wood was fouled in the box for a penalty. Wood took the kick sending the keeper the wrong way but the ball hit the post.In time-added-on, Billy Gruelich-Smith was through but keeper Lewis Graham handled the ball well outside the area for a red card. From the free kick, some 25 yards out, Robbie Briggs fired into the top corner giving sub keeper Rhys Jobling no chance.Final Score: Shildon 3 Durham City 1.
