It cannot be known for sure that the correlation is due to the other co-variable increasing. Correlation does not determine a cause and effect relationship has taken place. Although it may appear that aggression increases as time spent in an institution increases, there could be other extraneous factors that could have caused this increase.

One reason why an interview would be better is due to it being less structured. The interviewer will have been more free to ask follow up questions or adapt the questions to fit these answers they were given, or if the parents misunderstood the question.

Another reason is that the data produced is qualitative, especially if an unstructured interview is used. This makes the data more valid as there is more in depth, rich data about children's aggressive behaviours, which will increase the validity of the responses.

Random sampling would have resulted in a more representative sample that can be generalised as the sample is randomly selected. Opportunity sampling is likely to select a sample of people with some similarities as they were all in the same situation at the same time, possibly causing participant variables, which will create a biased sample.

• AO3 = 2 marks Knowledge and understanding of research methods

• A random sample is likely to be more representative of the target population than an opportunity sample and therefore findings are more likely to be generalisable.

• 1 mark for a very brief or slightly muddled answer eg an opportunity sample is biased.

• 2 marks for accurate elaboration.
