The Noble AcademySummer 2017 Homework

Russian I HomeworkMr. Velgach

[email protected] Students,In two years, you will all be speaking a foreign language—there are truly very

few things in life that you can accomplish that are as cool as learning to speak another language. Next year, you will join in the Noble Network tradition of learning Russian. It started at Noble Street, the Original Campus, perfected at Pritzker, and brought to The Noble Academy. You’re asking yourselves, “but why such an obscure language like Russian?” Well aside from the extremely rich tradition of the Russian language, it is also the most marketable language to learn for college admittance. Just imagine how much you’ll stick out on your college applications! Learning a non-traditional language in high school, such as Arabic, Korean, or Russian, significantly increases your chances of getting into a college. Also, if you already speak Spanish or another language, learning Russian will be easier for you. Florida State University put together a great list of why Russian is important; read the link below:

Because we will need to hit the ground running on the first day, your homework for the summer is to learn the Russian alphabet. 33 letters, not too different from English. There will be a test on the first day of school. But fear not, you’ll have office hours and homework to help you learn. I have put together a short and sweet guide for learning the letters in two simple tasks. It is on you to spend the time and energy memorizing it. Below is an explanation of what to do and how to get it done. I will hold a session of office hours for Russian this summer (see bottom of page) and feel free to reach out to schedule an appointment.Task #1: Read Resource # 1. Learn how the letters look and sound. This is your new best friend! It will give you all 33 letters in their uppercase and

lowercase forms and the name of the letter. For example: in English, the letter B is called B and pronounced as (bee), and in Russian the letter Ж is called Ж and pronounced as (zheh).

o It will help you with pronunciation. I have chosen English words that have sounds in them that sound like Russian letters. I have made those sounds red.

o To better learn the alphabet, use Resource # 2 and Resource # 3.

Task #2: Russian needs to be written in print and in cursive. Resource # 4 shows the cursive version of all letter. There are 9 pages of special paper that I want you to fill out practicing writing the letters. See the bottom of Resource # 4 for specific instructions.Office hour dates and times: Optional Office Hour Session # 1 July 19 / 1-5pm @ school (meet outside the school at 1:00pm)Resource # 1: This is your go-to guide for the Russian alphabet and how to

pronounce letters. I recommend making FLASH CARDS!

Resource # 2: This is your go-to website. You can hear the letter and see it written. It will be helpful:

http://www.russianforeveryone.com/rufea/lessons/introduction/alphabet/alphabet.htm

You can click on the headphones for sound, and even start learning vocabulary.

Resource # 3: Watch this video for help with pronunciation and writing letters. It is cheesy, and not very well done, but this will be your best guide:

Resource # 4: When you write in Russian, you must be able to write in print and in

cursive.

Here is a guide to the cursive and the print version of all 33 letters. The upper-and-lowercase print letter is in the top right-hand corner, while the upper-and-lowercase cursive letter is detailed in the larger box.
