Although Peru is a country full of attractions, whose people are friendly towards visitors, you should still
protect your money, valuables and credit cards, among other things, from thieves and bag snatchers.
Take great care of bags, rucksacks, mobile phones and cameras, especially in crowded places such as public
squares, railway stations, markets and the beach, etc. Find out where you should avoid for safety and to avoid theft
and crime in general. Keep your valuables in the hotel safe and always write
down the number of your credit or debit card company so that the cards can be cancelled if lost or stolen.
The Peruvian Police Force emergency number is 105, from anywhere in the country.
In the event of accidents and emergencies call 116 for the Fire Service in whichever city you happen to be.
Your health is important. If you have heart problems or high blood pressure, you must consult your doctor before going to highland areas such as Cusco and Puno. In any case it is a good thing to acclimatise yourself, in case you suffer from altitude sickness or soroche; for this reason we recommend that you rest the first day, drink plenty of fluids and eat lightly. Coca leaf tea also helps. When visiting Cusco we recom-mend first resting in the Sacred Valley of the Incas for a night or two as it is 600 metres (2,000 ft.) below the city and will help you to get used to the altitude. If you suffer from asthma or other bronchial problems, be careful in cities like Lima as there is a lot of pollution. A yellow fever vaccination at least 10 days beforehand is obligatory before going to the southern jungle. Vaccinations are also available against malaria, tetanus and hepatitis A and B.

Peru is divided into three natural regions: the coast, highlands and jungle. Just about all the world's climates can be found here. The coast, crossed by rivers forming beautiful valleys and fine beaches on the Pacific Ocean; the highland cities, valleys and mountains and the vivid
green jungle with its navigable rivers have a variety of microclimates. It is therefore important to wear the
right clothes for the local climate wherever you go, so that you enjoy your trip.
THE COASTDecember to April are the hottest months, so you can
wear light clothes, but you should also bring something warmer as the temperature can drop somewhat at night.
Between June and September you should wear warmer clothing as this is the coolest and dampest time of year,
but climate change is affecting this; so you could wear lighter clothing under a jacket or sweater if you wish.
During the rest of the year we recommend light clothing, a sweater and long trousers.
The climate on the north coast is more suitable for summer clothes as it is hot almost all year and the
temperature rises to 35 ºC in summer.
THE HIGHLANDSYou need to have the right clothes for the highlands. In
this region the climate is dry, wear clothes that can easily be changed because the weather can vary at any moment.
The best time to visit the highlands is April to October, when there is no rain and the days are sunny, with
daytime temperatures up to 24 °C (75 ºF), but at nights it can fall to -3 °C (27 ºF) so you need to keep warm. The
rainy season is from November to March. Sweater, waterproofs and long trousers are essential at this time.
THE JUNGLEThe jungle is a tropical region where clothing must be light weight; but long trousers and long-sleeved cotton clothes
are essential in the jungle to protect against insects. The warm, wet and rainy climate with temperatures above
35 °C (95 ºF) in the low jungle during the months of April to October make this the best time to visit. Waterproof
boots, hats, sunglasses and sunscreen are also necessary, together with insect repellant, binoculars, a torch and
bottled water or a canteen. The high jungle has a temperate subtropical climate with a lot of rain between November and March and sunny days
between April and October. The clothes already mentioned can also be worn here.
Occasional chilly periods or "surazos" can occur between May and August, when the temperature drops to 8 ºC (46 ºF).

APeruvian food has evolved tremendously in recent
years; it is booming and has positioned itself as one of the best in the world. This phenomenon has given
rise to many new and innovative restaurants where you can sample the variety of dishes available in
Peru, from typical Creole to fusion, nouvelle-Andean and international cuisine. If you don't have an
"adventurous" palate you will also find most of the world's fast-food chains represented.
Try a "cebiche", fish marinated in lemon juice and chilli pepper; served with onion, sweet corn and sweet potato
but this varies with the cook. And don't forget to taste "anticuchos", "lomo saltado", "causa", "ají de gallina", "rocoto relleno", the many different rice dishes (with shrimp, calamari, scallops, etc.) among many others.
To drink, try Peruvian pisco, a grape spirit used to make the famous pisco sour, the country's national cocktail.
The most complete restaurant guides in Peru are: "Summum, Ranking of Peru's Top Restaurants", and "Guia
Gastronomica del Peru, el Manual del Buen Gourmet". Remember that you can drink the tap water in most Peruvian cities. Even so, we recommend that where
possible you should drink bottled water or tap water that has been boiled for ten minutes or so.

There are also banknotes of 10, 20, 50, 100 and 200 nuevos soles. Try to keep low denomination banknotes available for shopping and other purchases; this makes it easier to give you change. The dollar and euro are the most widely accepted foreign currencies. The dollar exchange rate is variable, its value in nuevos soles has fallen considerably in recent years. You can change foreign currency into soles in any bank with complete confidence. But if you use bureaux de change, be careful and ask at your hotel which are the most reliable. Avoid street money changers; especially at night.

Domestic and international trunk dialling is available from public and private telephones. You can call from your hotel, charged to your bill, or buy cards to make domestic and international calls from any telephone. These can be bought in stores, supermarkets, service stations and corner shops, at different prices. Mobile phone calls cost more than fixed line telephone calls. If you bring your own mobile, remember to activate international roaming. Once in Peru you can call local numbers as if you were at home: dial “00” first and the code for Peru; then the city code followed by the number. People calling from Peru wanting to call your mobile should also dial as if it were an international call. And if you want to call a number in your own country, do so as if you were at home. To call another Peruvian city from a fixed line telephone, dial zero before the city code followed by the number.

If you prefer to hail a cab in the street, ask about the fare first so that you do not pay too much. Use those authorised by the municipalities, which display their licences. In Lima they are painted yellow and have a taxi sign on the roof. Taxis in Peru do not use meters; therefore you have to negotiate the price first. You do not have to give tips to taxi drivers. City buses are cheap but uncomfortable. They are identified by colour and route number, and their routes are usually very long. Find out about them and try not to travel late at night. Also, avoid motorcycle/three-wheel taxis as they are unsafe in every aspect. And there's more: pay with small change to avoid delays.

The country's many handicrafts markets are the places to go for handicrafts, cotton, alpaca or vicuña textiles,

Peruvians have an unusual custom concerning time. If you're invited to a friend's home for lunch or dinner, you should arrive at least half an hour later than the appointed time - if you are punctual your host may not be quite ready and this may feel somewhat uncomfortable. This is not a problem; it is just a custom that should be respected. However, you should arrive on time for business meetings.Peruvians lunch and dine relatively late, especially during weekends. If you decide to lunch between midday and one in the afternoon, you will probably find the restaurant empty. Most people will arrive after 1:30 or two in the afternoon and on weekends they may lunch after three. The same applies to dinner, restaurants fill up after nine at night. If you're going to a disco or party, a "few beforehand" is a Peruvian tradition. People meet in a house or bar for a few drinks approximately two hours before going on to dance; the party often goes on till dawn. Remember that if you go to a disco before one in the morning there are likely to be very few people there and it will start to fill up after two or three in the morning.

equally talented, can be seen regularly in bars and discos throughout the country, especially in Lima.
