From the Pastor…

My Dear People in Christ,

From its earliest days, the Catholic Church has relied on images — biblical scenes in stained glass windows, statues of saints and glorious mosaics, which can be found in so many of our

churches. Television, movies, and computer images have permeated this last century. As never before in human his-tory, our children are learning via image.

It is, of course, impossible to picture God using humanly created images. In fact, attempting to do so is to fall into what is called idolatry… the worship of man-made idols. But there is one way of imaging God that really does work, and God has given us that image. It is Jesus Christ, the Icon, the Image of God, found in a human person who is Jesus Christ, both the Son of Man and the Son of God at one and the same time. The concept of the Holy Trinity is a mystery, but not a total mystery. Mysteries, after all, are made up of clues. In a mys-tery story we pursue and piece together clues in order to see the whole picture. So it is with the Holy Trinity. We have lots of clues about the Holy Trinity. And when we pursue them and then piece them together we get a good glimpse into what kind of a God, God is.

God is all about love. ‘When we live in love we live in God, and God lives in us,’ St. John tells us. Living in love, however, does not mean we must all be the same. We are all individuals and, as such, cannot be the same as other persons. The Father is a distinct Person; the Son is a distinct Person; and the Holy Spirit is a distinct Person. Distinct though They are, however, They exist in One Being of Infinite Love; They exist in one unbreakable bond, in one infinite union of being together.

While all of that remains a mystery to us, it is not so mysterious that we cannot live with each other in a reality of life that reflects and shares in the reality of God’s life. To live a God-like life we must forgive rather than condemn. We must build-up and affirm rather than tear down. We must see the best, not the worst. We must be self-sacrificial and not self-centered. We must be giving rather than grasping. We must offer hope, not despair. We must heal rather than wound.

All of this is best affirmed and nurtured in what we know of as a family. There is nothing in life that more closely re-flects the reality of the Holy Trinity than genuine family life. For it is in living in a family that we not only belong to each other but also where we discover, nurture, and affirm our own unique and individual personalities. It is a family that makes us individuals, and it is we as individuals who consti-tute our family. It is the “family” of the Holy Trinity that con-stitutes God. It is in living the reality of being truly a family that we have a glimpse into the life of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

If you live in this area and attend regularly, we invite you to join our parish of St. Francis of Assisi. Registration is necessary for better care of souls, more ef-fective administration of sick calls, and matters pertaining to baptism, education, marriage and burial. Registration is very easy, and the cream “Parish Registration” cards can be found in the pamphlet holder above the table in the lobby. After completing, please place in the Parish Drop Box, located in the door by the water fountain in the lobby.

behavior when attending Mass?

The Eucharist in the Catholic Church is the celebration of Mass, the Eucharistic liturgy. It is “the source and summit of the Christian life,” to which the other sacraments are oriented. The Mass is exactly the same sacrifice that Jesus Christ offered on the Cross at Calvary. It is the central act of wor-ship of the Roman Catholic Church, which culminates in the celebration of the sacrament of the Eucharist, through which we encounter the Real Presence of Christ. Therefore, the Mass it is a very solemn and sacred event, held in a sacred environment. It is event deserving of the utmost in respectful behavior.

How can we help ensure a sacred environment for the Mass?

1. Silence should reign once inside the church. It is a House of Prayer and conversations distract others from personal prayer and recollection.

2. Special effort should be made to arrive in time for Mass. It is disrespectful to enter during the services and a distraction to others in the pews

3. Out of respect for the liturgy and fellow parishion-ers, phones and all electronic devices should be turned off prior to entering the Church. It is NEVER appropriate to answer the phone or make a call or text in Church. Emergencies are obvious exceptions.

4. Eating, drinking, and chewing gum are inappro-priate behaviors in church; additionally, it violates the Eucharistic fast, and thus prohibits one from receiving the Eucharist.

5. Children should remain in parental custody at all times for best behaviors, while patience is al-ways accorded to crying infants.

Baptism Class Parents who wish to have their children (below age 7) baptized must contact either of the priests or the deacon to make an appointment for the baptism classes and to schedule the dates of the baptism. Requirements are as follows: -Unless permitted by the pastor, parents must be registered parishioners. If coming from another parish, a letter from your pastor confirming your registration in the parish and your completion of baptism classes must be presented. -We highly recommend that parents are actively participating in the life of the parish, by attendance at weekly Mass -Godparents must be fully-initiated, practicing Catholics in a valid marriage. -If the Godparents are not from St. Francis of Assisi Parish, they need to bring a signed Sponsor letter from the Pastor of the Parish they come from.

Corpus Christi The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ The Feast of Corpus Christi (Latin for “Body of Christ”) is the Roman Rite liturgical solemnity celebrating the real presence of the body and blood of Jesus Christ, the Son of God, in the Eucha-rist—known as transubstantiation. Cor-pus Christi emphasizes the joy of the Eucharist being the body and blood of Jesus Christ. This year, the Solemnity of Corpus Christi takes place on June 3rd. Following the 4:30 p.m. Mass, on Sunday June 3rd, we will have a Sol-emn Eucharistic Procession outside the Church and around the Church grounds and parking lot, before returning inside the Church for a Solemn Benedic-tion.

Mi querida gente en Cristo, Desde sus inicios, la Iglesia Católica ha confiado en las imágenes: escenas bíblicas en vidrieras, es-tatuas de santos y gloriosos mosaicos, que se pueden

encontrar en muchas de nuestras iglesias. La televisión, las películas y las imágenes de computadora han permeado este último siglo. Como nunca antes en la historia humana, nuestros niños están aprendiendo a través de la imagen.

Por supuesto, es imposible imaginar a Dios usando imágenes creadas por humanos. De hecho, tratar de hacerlo es caer en lo que se llama idolatría ... la adoración de ídolos hechos por el hombre. Pero hay una forma de imaginar a Dios que realmente funciona, y Dios nos ha dado esa imagen. Es Jesucristo, el Icono, la Imagen de Dios, que se encuentra en una persona humana que es Jesucristo, el Hijo del Hombre y el Hijo de Dios al mismo tiempo. El concepto de la Santísima Trinidad es un misterio, pero no un misterio total. Los miste-rios, después de todo, están formados por pistas. En una his-toria de misterio perseguimos y juntamos pistas para ver la imagen completa. Lo mismo ocurre con la Santísima Trinidad. Tenemos muchas pistas sobre la Santísima Trinidad. Y cuando los perseguimos y luego los juntamos, tenemos una buena idea de qué tipo de Dios es Dios.

Dios tiene que ver con el amor. "Cuando vivimos en amor, vivimos en Dios y Dios vive en nosotros", nos dice San Juan. Vivir en el amor, sin embargo, no significa que todos debemos ser iguales. Todos somos individuos y, como tales, no podemos ser lo mismo que otras personas. El Padre es una Persona distinta; el Hijo es una Persona dis-tinta; y el Espíritu Santo es una Persona distinta. Sin embargo, por más que lo sean, existen en el Ser Único del Amor In-finito; Ellos existen en un vínculo irrompible, en una unión infinita de estar juntos.

Si bien todo eso sigue siendo un misterio para nosotros, no es tan misterioso que no podamos vivir el uno con el otro en una realidad de la vida que refleje y comparta la realidad de la vida de Dios. Para vivir una vida de Dios, debemos per-donar en lugar de condenar. Debemos construir y afirmar en lugar de derribar. Debemos ver lo mejor, no lo peor. Debemos ser sacrificados y no egocéntricos. Debemos estar dando en lugar de aferrarnos. Debemos ofrecer esperanza, no desesper-ación. Debemos sanar en lugar de herir.

Todo esto es mejor afirmado y nutrido en lo que cono-cemos como una familia. No hay nada en la vida que refleje más de cerca la realidad de la Santísima Trinidad que la vida familiar genuina. Porque al vivir en una familia no solo nos pertenecemos unos a otros, sino que también descubrimos, nutrimos y afirmamos nuestras personalidades únicas e indi-viduales. Es una familia que nos hace individuos, y somos nosotros, como individuos, quienes formamos nuestra familia. Es la "familia" de la Santísima Trinidad lo que constituye a Dios. Al vivir la realidad de ser verdaderamente una familia, podemos vislumbrar la vida del Padre, del Hijo y del Espíritu Santo. Les deseo a todos una bendita semana. P. Edison Bernavas I.C

Bienvenidos a San Francisco de Asís! Damos una especial bienvenida a todos

los visitantes y nuevos feligreses que han venido hoy a celebrar la Misa con nosotros. Si usted es nuevo en nuestra comunidad, por favor presén-tese a nuestro clero. Si vive en esta área y participa de la Misa regularmente, le invitamos a unirse a nuestra parro-quia. Registrarse es importante para asuntos de bautizo, primera comunión, confirmación, unción de los enfermos y funerales.

La inscripción es muy fácil. Los formularios se en-cuentran a la entrada de la parroquia. Son unas tarjetas de color crema con el título, ‘Registro Parroquial’. Después de completarla, colóquela en el buzón ubicado en la puerta al lado de la fuente de agua en el vestíbulo.

Tres en Uno El número tres tiene un gran significado en la Bi-blia. En el Antiguo Testamento Dios es el que era, el que es y el que vendrá. El templo de Jerusalén fue construido en tres partes. El trabajo de Dios se completaría el tercer día (Éxodo 19:11). El primero de los patriarcas, Abraham, re-conoció la presencia de Dios en los tres hombres que lo visitaron en su hacienda de Mambré (Génesis 18). De igual manera, en el Nuevo Testamento, los evangelios describen la obra salvífica de Jesucristo cumplida por su resurrección el tercer día después de la crucifixión y san Pablo se refiere a las tres virtudes principales (1 Corintios 13:13). Aunque Jesús envía a sus discípulos a bautizar en el nombre del Padre, del Hijo y del Espíritu Santo (Mateo 28:19) la pala-bra “Trinidad” nunca se usa en las Escrituras. La Iglesia nunca ha creído que toda la verdad está confinada única-mente en las Escrituras; sino que también puede ser revela-da a medida que la Iglesia orante reflexiona en la experien-cia de Dios actuando en la vida de los creyentes. Le llevó a la Iglesia trescientos años de reflexión antes de declarar por fin la doctrina de la Santísima Trinidad: la unidad del Pa-dre, el Hijo y el Espíritu Santo como tres personas y un solo Dios. Es importante para nosotros hoy entender que por “persona” no se quiso decir un ser independiente. Comúnmente la persona siempre se entendía, a cierto nivel, como un ser relacionado con otros. Así es que las tres per-sonas de la Trinidad se entienden como tres en uno: tres personas distintas y un solo Dios. Como seres humanos creados a imagen y semejanza de nuestro Creador no pode-mos “arreglárnosla solos” sin graves consecuencias. Todos estamos aquí para depender los unos de los otros y así en-contrar siempre un gozo al vivir con fidelidad. La Santísima Trinidad Vayan . . . y enseñen a todas las naciones, bautizándolas en el nombre del Padre y del Hijo y del Espíritu Santo. ~Mateo 28:19


Reflexionemos sobre la Palabra de Dios No siempre es fácil ser parte de una familia. Dice una vieja máxima que los padres buenos le dan a sus hijos raíces y alas, o sea una sensación de seguridad y la libertad para que vivan su propia vida. Pero adquirir esa clase de equilibrio a veces conlleva años de esfuerzos. Algunas veces los hijos se sienten sofocados por sus padres y que éstos tratan de controlar su vida; otras veces los hijos se sienten abandona-dos, como que no son importantes y más aún, que no son amados.

Las lecturas de hoy nos recuer-dan que Dios desea que sepamos que podemos encontrar nuestras raíces en el amor divino del Padre, del Hijo y del Espíritu Santo, y que también ahí podemos encontrar nuestra libertad. Las pala-bras de Pablo a los romanos destacan primero el propósito del don del Espíritu, que celebramos el domingo pasado. Ese Espíritu nos ha sido dado con el propósito de llevarnos más hacia las profundidades del misterio de Dios y al amor de Dios a fin de que podamos reconocer que somos los amados hijos e hijas de Dios.

Este mismo mensaje se encuentra en las palabras que dirige Moisés al pueblo cuando se disponen a entrar en la tierra prometida. ¿Ha tenido alguien alguna vez un dios como nuestro Dios? Moisés se maravilla. ¿Ha habido algún dios que le demuestre el amor a su pueblo con los signos que Dios nos ha mostrado y los prodigios que nos ha hecho? Moisés los está llevando a conocer quiénes son ellos como familia de Dios y a reconocer que “el Señor es Dios . . . y de que no hay otro” (Deuteronomio 4:39).

Pero no por eso nos quedamos acurrucados en el abrazo divino. Hemos sido enviados a proclamarle a otras personas esta buena nueva, a ir y hacer “discípulos a todos los pue-blos” (Mateo 28:19). Esto lo logramos cuando le permiti-mos al Espíritu dirigirnos y guiarnos en nuestro testimonio de Dios, que es Padre, Hijo y Espíritu Santo. ~James A. Wallace, C.Ss.R. Salvación Continúa Dios se alegra cuando nos refrescamos con el amor de Dios y volvemos a dedicar nuestras vidas a la santidad. Hechos pedazos como estamos, el Señor quiere nuestra ayuda para salvar al mundo. Jesús salvó al mundo una vez y para to-dos, desde luego, por medio de su cruz y resurrección. Pero el trabajo de la creación de salvación de Dios continúa como Dios provee la gracia a cada persona para trabajar relaciones saludables con Dios y con los demás. Este es un trabajo que continuará hasta el final de los tiempos, y el Señor quiere nuestra ayuda. Esto es lo que significa ser un discípulo de Jesús en la Nueva Evangelización: Debemos pedir la gracia de vida de Jesús, refrescando a otros con su amor.

Todos en Familia El hecho de que seamos en verdad hijos de Dios cambia todo en la historia de la humanidad. Es fascinante estudiar las mitologías antiguas, con tantos dioses, semidioses, mon-struos y otras criaturas. Pero en ningún lugar en esas his-torias hay un simple mortal que proclame la íntima bondad de Dios quien es el padre de toda la unidad, con un amor tierno e inmutable. El libro del Deuteronomio considera esta situación de Dios preguntando: "¿ha pasado algo tan extraordinario alguna vez? ¿Se escuchó algo tan asombroso antes?" El pueblo de Dios debe responder: "¡No, nunca!" Dios, el único y verdadero Dios, ha transformado toda la historia humana al elegirnos como sus amados hijos. Y aunque hemos roto todas las promesas que hemos hecho, Dios ha permanecido fiel a nuestro pacto. Dios nos muestra cómo mantener la fe unos con otros con amor profundo y permanente. Muchos de nosotros tenemos heridas marcadas por experi-mentar la infidelidad y el egoísmo. Como pueblo, no tenemos la consistencia de ser buenos para amarnos unos con otros de la misma manera que Dios nos ama. Cada uno de nosotros sabe el dolor salvaje de la indiferencia o la tra-ición. Mucho de nosotros de alguna manera ha lastimado o herido a otras personas. Aun así, Dios nos ama. La fideli-dad de Dios nos anima a intentar nuevamente a amar desin-teresadamente.

La Responsabilidad de Nuestra Fe Hoy es un día para reflexionar sobre el hecho de que en el Bautismo, Dios Padre, Hijo y Espíritu Santo nos hizo hijos suyos. La primera lectura del Deuteronomio nos insta a an-clar en nuestro corazón la verdad de que Dios es el Señor del cielo y de la tierra y que no hay otro dios. San Pablo nos recuerda que, al haber recibido el Espíritu de adopción en el Bautismo, ahora somos hijos de Dios. En el Evangelio Jesús nos encomienda la responsabilidad de encontrar más discípulos. Estas realidades hacen de la solemnidad de hoy un día de alabanza, adoración y responsabilidad. Es un día apropiado para agradecerle a Dios el generoso regalo de la fe que recibimos en el Bautismo. También es un día para pedirle a Dios fortaleza para asumir la responsabilidad de compartir esa fe con los demás.

Lecturas de Hoy Primera lectura -- El Señor es Dios en los cielos y en la tierra, y no hay otro (Deuteronomio 4:32-34, 39-40). Salmo -- Dichoso el pueblo que el Señor se escogió como heredad (Salmo 33 [32]). Segunda lectura -- Somos hijos de Dios, herederos tam-bién; herederos de Dios herederos de Cristo si sufrimos con él (Romanos 8:14-17). Evangelio -- Jesús les dice a sus discípulos que vayan y hagan discípulos de todas las naciones, bautizándolos y enseñándolos (Mateo 28:16-20).

Corpus Christi El Santísimo Cuerpo y la Sangre de Cristo La Fiesta del Corpus Christi (en latín, "Cuerpo de Cristo") es la solemnidad litúrgi-ca del rito romano que celebra la presencia real del cuerpo y la sangre de Jesucristo, el Hijo de Dios, en la Eucaristía, conocida como transubstanciación. Corpus Christi enfatiza el gozo de la Eucaristía como el cuerpo y la san-gre de Jesucristo. Este año, la solemnidad de Corpus Christi se lleva a cabo el 3 de junio.
