ESI 3. Teaching and Learning Methods: This course focuses on engineering andorganizational project management aspects specific to thetechnical operation of a race team or other closely relatedbusiness in the extremely fast moving motorsports industry.The motorsports industry is unique in that the cycle time foran entirely new design of a complete competition vehicle ismonths rather than years and the time frame for a majorredesign of a significant system is weeks not months, and fora component or subsystem can be days rather than weeks.Additionally, the inevitability of unexpected events inmotorsports means that project scheduling must be in aconstant state of flux because any given weekend the resultmay be a successful winning car, a last place finish requiringmajor overhaul, or the complete destruction of the vehicle,requiring a complete change of redirection in efforts. Thedetermination of which scenario exists can be as little as fivedays before the vehicle is required to be operational again.This requires that engineers and technicians in themotorsports industry be constantly prepared for shiftingschedules, unexpected time lines, and changing requirements,and while the budget is likely constrained, the requirementsagainst that budget may change radically from initial plan tofinal implementation. While operating in this uniqueenvironment, motorsports businesses must contend with thesame ethical, financial, resource, leadership, personnel, andbusiness management problems faced by other industries.For all these reasons, there is a need to examine the projectmanagement issues of motorsports from a differentperspective than that used for traditional industries.
