Дорогие ребята! Мы рады вас видеть на нашем курсе!

COURSE OVERVIEW

Learning a language encompasses a range of important cognitive processes that we use in real-life

situations outside of linguistic communication. Similar to how we memorize new vocabulary, we

memorize grocery lists. We analyze a string of words said to us (breaking these words into categories –

subject, predicate, direct object, and attribute) so we could make up a meaningful sentence, in a very

similar way we identify patterns and analogies in statistical data so we could predict outcomes. Similarly

to how we draw on various sources – grammar, vocabulary, cultural scripts, interpersonal knowledge –

in order to create a powerful argument, we synthesize a breadth of knowledge to build our small

business enterprise. All these skills communicate with each other and feed off each other. Therefore,

learning a language helps to hone a great number of our cognitive skills.

Learning a language also allows us to reflect on the way we perceive the world and to uncover that our

perception is to a great degree shaped by our language. As Ludwig Wittgenstein put it, “The limits of my

language mean the limits of my world” (Tractatus Logio-Philosopicus, 1922). For instance, a single

phrase “My roommate went to the library” could have at least six Russian equivalents – Мой сосед

ходил в библиотеку, Мой сосед пошёл в библиотеку, Мой сосед сходил в библиотеку, Моя

соседка ходила в библиотеку, Моя соседка пошла в библиотеку, Моя соседка сходила в

библиотеку. Each translation adds a unique perception of the event and the speaker must choose the

right one so that her/his conversationalists are clear as to the whereabouts of the roommate as well as

the gender of this person. Now you see how language affects speakers’ perceptions.

In this course, while following the adventures of our textbook’s characters, we will continue to explore

how languages denote reality through lexical and grammatical structures. We will keep comparing

English and Russian and uncovering conceptual categories and cognitive patterns coded by these two

languages. This analysis will help us detect cultural prototypes through which speech communities make

sense of reality and their experiences.

In addition to analyzing and comparing Russian and American cultures through their languages, we will

continue learning about Russia and Russian people by examining cultural products, practices, and

perspectives. For example, this semester we will learn about such practices as exam taking, including a

number of superstitious and silly routines that students do to ensure good grades; grocery shopping at

supermarkets and what you might call farmers’ markets (although most sellers at Russian farmers’

markets do not grow any crops, rather they buy from farmers and bring the produce to cities); traveling

to Russia’s provinces (the role of public transportation in Russia and the U.S.) ; celebrating family events

and gift-giving traditions (birthdays). We will discuss differences in what is considered polite and

appropriate, how Russians regard individualism and personal responsibility.

We will also continue learning various linguistic patterns so we are better equipped to carry out our

communicative intentions, to participate in oral and written communication, to be able to read and

listen to simple conversations, to navigate basic social situations related to everyday life. In a word, we

have a great educational semester ahead. Buckle up! Let’s have some fun!

STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES (SLOs)

Culture SLO

Students, who successfully completed this course, will develop necessary analytical and linguistic skills

to identify, compare, and analyze Russian cultural products, practices, and perspectives as related to

most informal and some formal settings and compare them across cultures.

Language SLO

technology in basic informal settings in four modalities at novice-high or intermediate-low levels based

on the ACTFL proficiency scale. Typically speakers with these levels of proficiency can do the following:

SPEAKING:

- Participate in simple conversations on familiar topics, using simple sentences

- Handle short social interactions in everyday situations asking and answering questions

- Present information on most familiar topics using simple sentences

WRITING:

- Compose short texts and present information related to everyday topics using simple

sentences

READING:

- Understand simple written messages related to everyday life

- Understand the main idea of short simple texts and written presentations on familiar topics

LISTENING:

Assessment

To measure our progress we will be doing a series of assessment activities, including quizzes, written

and oral unit tests, midterm and final examinations (written and oral), in-class presentations with a final

five-minute long presentation. Students may also be asked to make written or audio-taped entries to e-

discussions, analyzing a particular cultural product or practice. Be ready to run a simple search using a

Russian search-engine. Finally, students are expected to actively participate in class – come prepared to

contribute to in-class discussions, answer and ask questions on the topic covered in class.

CLASS ATTENDANCE AND PARTICIPATION (15%)

Regular class attendance is a must for your progress. If you must miss class due to illness or some other

legitimate reason (i.e., religious holidays), please notify the instructor in advance by sending an email. If

you are sick and miss classes, please, bring a doctor’s note to the next class. Every three (3) unexcused

absences will lower your grade (A+ to A, A to A-, A- to B+, and so on).

Class participation is one of the most important components of your performance and, consequently,

your grade in this class. Your full engagement is expected.

The use of laptops, tablets, and phones is not allowed during the class. Texting, checking your emails,

updating your Instagram, etc. will result in lower participation grade. You can use electronic dictionaries

on your devices only during certain activities.

HOMEWORK (15%)

You are expected to spend about 1.5-2 hours on your homework daily. Written homework exercises will be

graded for accuracy and effort. Homework must be turned in the next day it has been assigned. For

instance, the homework assigned on Monday must be turned in on Tuesday. Late homework will not be

graded resulting in your losing points toward the final grade. Please, DO NOT USE GOOGLE TRANSLATE

for any part of your homework.

The use of electronic translators is considered to be cheating, and it is an example of academic

misconduct, and according to Indiana University Code of Student Rights, Responsibilities, and Conduct,

“The university may discipline a student for academic misconduct.”

You are allowed to use any electronic dictionaries to look up unknown words, but you are not

allowed to type in whole sentences in “Google Translator,” or any other electronic translator,

and hand them in as your own product.

QUIZZES (10%)

Each unit will be accompanied with at least one vocabulary or/and grammar quiz. We will have short

vocabulary/grammar quizzes almost every day.

UNIT ONLINE TESTS + WRITTEN ESSAYS (20%)

For each unit there will be an online test and a written essay. On your tests you will demonstrate your

mastery of the vocabulary and grammar from the covered unit. Tests will be accompanied by 15

sentence-long essays to be written at home (see writing prompts). We will have unit tests approximately

every other week (dates are listed on the syllabus). Writing response is due next class day after the test.

The use of Google Translate or any other electronic translator is prohibited. If I catch you using these

resources, you will receive a zero on the essay.

MIDTERM WRITTEN EXAMINATION (10%)

The midterm is similar to unit tests (only slightly longer) and covers all of the material presented by the

day of the exam with particular emphasis on the vocabulary and grammar learned in the last unit before

the exam.

MIDTERM ORAL EXAMINATION (10%)

During oral exam you will engage in conversation covering topics that we have dealt in class – university

and family life, culture, travel and sightseeing, superstitions, university life and exam taking; you will be

also expected to compare academic life and youth culture in Russia and America. The conversation will

also include such topics as Russian social institutions, households, family relations and such. Oral exam

may also include a role-play which will be read to you in English and then you will be asked to act it out

in Russian.

FINAL PROJECT (10%)

It is a group project you will start working on Week 10 of the semester. You will propose a topic and a

format of your final project. We will discuss the requirements for the project as a class and then as a

group, as projects requirements will vary based on the format you choose. Please make sure you have

an IU Box account.

IN-CLASS FINAL PROJECT PRESENTATION (10%)

This is a group, 5-min. long presentation that you will deliver in class. Detailed instructions and rubric

will be provided. Presentations will be graded on linguistic sophistication, grammatical accuracy, and

overall composition.
