‘Rajouri Baradari turns into den of criminals’

PIR PANJAL BUREAU

Rajouri, Feb 20: Stinking piles of garbage, crumbling walls covered with spider nets and threat of creepy reptiles hidden in luxuriant bushes and tall grass welcomes the visitor at Rajouri Baradari --- the place that brings to mind glorious epoch of friendship between mighty Mughals and local rulers, the Jarals.

It is the place where Mughal-Jaral friendship turned into relationship as marriage ceremony of Mughal emperor, Aurang-zeb and Nawab Bai Begum, daughter of Jaral ruler of Rajouri,Taj-u-Din was held here about 369 years ago.

Famous by the name of Baradari (Guest Hall), the place has become a den for criminals and drug addicts as both Archaeological Survey of

India (ASI) and local admin-istration have shut their eyes towards preservation of this rich heritage site, bringing it on verge of extinction.

The remains of the house of Nawab Begum can still be found in Kot Mahal but the condition of this historical place also presents a depress-ing picture with caved-in roof and crumbling walls.

Still standing tall, the massive entry gateway of Kot Mahal is the only remi-niscent of the past glory of the royal complex.

According to locals, this heritage site has become a place of illegal activities and safe haven for drug addicts. A big hole in the wall pro-vides entry to these elements into the Baradari, a testi-

mony as to how the place is being vandalized in absence of proper watch over.

The place earlier housed District Hospital for several years, however, after the construction of new hospital building, it was left to decay and vandalized by anti-social elements. As per president of a local anti-drug group, Choudhary Liaqat Ali, such

isolated places are surely used by drug addicts and criminals to carry out their activities. He said police should take steps to stop them (criminals) from using the place for illegal deeds.

The subsequent genera-tions of Jarals, who are now known as Mirzas, have also not made any efforts to pre-serve the legacy and heritage of their royal ancestry.

However, a member of the Mirza clan, Zubair Mirza has established an organisation, ‘Reformer’ to protect and preserve this Mughal-Jaral monument and has decided to rope in all members of Jaral and Mughal clans to achieve the objective.

The organization has urged the district adminis-tration to take steps to save the heritage sites which are source of rich history of Rajouri. A member of Nawab Begum’s family, Advocate Ahsan Mirza is also working for preservation of this place of historical importance.
