TURKISH ADAPTATION STUDY OF GENERAL PHUBBING SCALE

ABSTRACT

disorders. Phubbing can be defined as the interaction of people with mentally mobile

technologies in situations where they interact socially and physically. The concept of

phubbing was formed by the combination of the name "Phone" and "Snub" verb. In this study,

the adaptation of General Phubbing Scale (GSP) to Turkish was performed. Validity and

reliability of GSP scale were studied. The research consists of 226 students studying at

-2019 academic year. Original General

Phubbing Scale (GSP) is a 15-item, 7-point Likert-type scale. Cronbach's Alpha reliability

coefficient of the original scale was calculated as r = 0.809. The General Phubbing Scale

(GSP) was a 5-point Likert-type scale with 15 items. Cronbach's Alpha reliability coefficient

of the scale was determined as r=0.853. The translation of the scale into Turkish was done by

language experts. The scale was compared with the original version and presented to the

expert opinion. In the scale articles, the importance is given to the intelligibility of the

questions and their relevance to the language structure. Compliance with Turkish, assessment

and content aspects were examined by experts. According to the results of the study, GSP

factor analysis levels were found to be verifiable. In this study, which aims to adapt and

develop the Phubbing, GSP scale into Turkish, it is thought to be important in terms of filling

this gap in the literature. It was seen that individuals with phubbing characteristics negatively

affected their face to face communication with their friends. It is concluded that individuals'

devotion to smart phone causes them to be isolated from social environments and this

situation affects their interpersonal relations negatively. It is thought that with the adapted and

developed scales, it can help to determine the Phubbing levels of adults and to take

appropriate measures to these results. Similar scales can be developed for different age and

different sample groups in the following stages.
