$The$Autumn$Panel$Breakfast$on$the$14th$April$was$attended$by$over$50$members$and$friends$listening$to$the$impressive$achievements$of$the$3$speakers:$Lieutenant$Colonel$Caroline$Coombs,$Professor$Sarah$Percy$and$Microsoft$Certified$Technical$Specialist$and$Microsoft$Certified$IT$Professional$in$Business$Intelligence,$Leah$Kaplin.$$These$talented$women$provided$us$with$a$brilliant$snapshot$of$where$their$personal$careers$have$led$them$as$well$as$highlighting$the$role$of$being$mothers$with$young$children.$The$venue$provided$a$tranquil$backdrop,$and$to$the$tireless$and$committed$Hilary$Silbert$many$thanks$on$behalf$of$all$our$members$for$the$very$professional$organising$of$this$event$as$well$as$the$recent$Gala$Prize$Night$on$the$21st$May.$In$this$newsletter$you$will$read$of$the$scholarship$and$bursary$winners$of$2012$and$of$what$they$achieved$through$these$grants.$It$was$a$most$successful$evening$with$many$past$as$well$as$present$winners$joining$us.$$$The$writing$of$the$History$of$our$Association$is$entering$the$final$stages,$and$I$recently$caught$up$with$the$committee$to$congratulate$them$on$successfully$acquiring$a$Lottery$West$grant$towards$the$production$and$publishing$cost$of$the$Association’s$history.$$This$grant$is$an$important$success$and$I$will$have$more$to$say$in$the$future.$$$Another$big$success$this$month$has$been$the$launching$of$the$website,$so$you$can$look$up$what$is$happening$at$www.graduatewomenwa.org.au.$Thank$you$Alison$Hayden,$Margaret$Giles,$Louise$Ewing$and$Jenny$Jones.$Another$job$well$done.$$I$am$sure$you$will$all$gearing$to$go$to$the$dinner.$If$you$like,$invite$friends$and$make$up$your$own$table$of$8$or$we$can$do$it$for$you.$Please$use$the$flyer$at$the$end$of$the$newsletter$and$promote$this$event$amongst$your$networks.$I$am$looking$forward$to$meeting$you$again$on$this$occasion$that$celebrates$our$inaugural$members$and$their$first$meeting$in$the$UWA$Irwin$Street$buildings.$$Felicity$Farrelly$

90$years$ago$Parliamentarian$Edith$Dircksey$Cowan$proposed$the$Private$Member’s$Bill$–The$Women’s$Legal$Status$Bill$–$she$was$Australia’s$first$woman$politician$and$the$success$of$the$bill$allowed$women$to$enter$the$professions$for$the$first$time.$And$a$university$education$was$needed$for$those$women$who$wished$to$take$up$the$professions.$

From$this$early$group$of$women$entering$university,$our$organization$was$born,$with$the$aim$of$supporting$other$women$to$obtain$the$education$they$needed.$Now$our$winners$are$world$wide$_–$last$year$we$awarded$a$scholarship$to$the$pre$school$teacher$in$Galle,$Sri$Lanka$where$we$have$been$fund$raising$since$member$Lalani$Weddikkara$witnessed$the$tsunami$and$has$worked$tirelessly$to$build$a$new$kindergarten.$60%$of$the$children$were$killed$and$after$eight$years$of$residing$in$temporary$facilities,$this$year$a$new$kindergarten$is$being$built.$Last$year$Graduate$Women$gave$a$scholarship$to$the$teacher$Asanka$to$complete$a$month$of$professional$development$in$WA$and$the$90th$anniversary$gift$is$a$scheme$to$donate$a$book.$We$aim$to$raise$$1000$for$appropriate$books$to$be$bought$in$Sri$Lanka,$and$thus$establish$a$library$for$the$children.$In$just$6$months$we$are$have$raised$$600$so$if$you$are$interested$in$donating$please$contact$Karen$in$the$office.$

We$have$also$just$enjoyed$the$Gala$Prize$evening.$It$was$wonderful$to$welcome$so$many$past$winners,$members$and$friends.$$Always$an$intellectually$inspiring$evening,$this$year’s$event$was$truly$special.$$

$At$the$February$Council$Meeting,$Lynda$Roberts_Hall,$AFGW$CIR,$recommended$the$formation$of$a$Focus$Group$of$interested$AFGW$members$who$would$be$willing,$able$and$interested$in$providing$commentary,$if$requested,$on$any$number$of$issues$relating$to$AFGW$and$IFUW.$$This$was$prompted$by$a$request$for$information$about$how$our$national$association$perceived$IFUW.$$Whilst$comments$from$Federal$Council$or$the$CIR$network$could$be$collected$relatively$easily,$Lynda$was$conscious$that$most$people$asked$are$either$those$with$very$busy$lives$and$portfolios$within$AFGW,$or$else$they$are$members$with$well$established$connections$and$views$about$IFUW$and$were$therefore$not$necessarily$representative$of$the$General$Membership.$This$realisation$led$Lynda$to$think$about$the$fact$that$as$this$is$an$IFUW$Conference$year,$opinions$of$the$membership$about$IFUW$are$even$more$important.$$Federal$Council$passed$the$AFGW$Focus$group$initiative$(as$proposed$by$Lynda)$and$participants$are$now$being$sought$to$create$this$group.$This$group$will$function$outside,$and$in$addition$to,$Federal$Council$and$existing$STA$Presidents’$and$CIR$networks,$but$all$existing$groups$and$networks$will$be$included$in$any$consultative$opportunities.$$Lynda$Roberts_Hall$is$therefore$seeking$the$nominations$of$up$to$2$members$from$Graduate$Women$WA$who$would$be$willing$to$provide$opinions$or$be$consulted$on$an$ad_hoc$basis$over$the$next$year.$$This$would$ideally$suit$experienced$long$term$members$of$the$Association,$but$would$also$be$a$great$opportunity$for$Young$Members$to$contribute$to$the$association.$This$of$course$does$not$exclude$anyone$who$fits$between$those$two$parameters$who$would$like$to$have$a$voice$in$the$consultative$process.$$$If$you$are$interested,[email protected]$so$that$your$interest$can$be$confirmed$at$the$committee$meeting$to$be$held$on$June$5th.$$It$is$to$be$stressed$that$this$is$an$ad_hoc$group,$which$will$serve$to$provide$an$additional$layer$of$consultation$and$communication$at$a$grassroots$level$whenever$quick$consultation$is$required.$$$

$$CONGRATULATIONS$are$in$order$for$the$newly$crowned$WA$Volunteer$of$the$Year.$Dawn$Butterworth$was$a$very$deserving$winner$of$the$award,$announced$on$Wednesday$15th$of$May.$Members$will$remember$how$Dawn$so$generously$allowed$the$preschool$teacher$Asanka$from$Sri$Lanka,$to$join$her$month$long$professional$development$program$last$year$with$the$teachers$she$has$assisted$from$Popendetta$in$New$Guinea.$$The$Western$Australian$Volunteer$of$the$Year$Award'recognises$a$Western$Australian$who$through$their$voluntary$undertakings$epitomises$the$spirit$of$volunteering$and$makes$an$exemplary$contribution$to$the$betterment$of$the$well_being$of$Western$Australia$and$its$people.$Award$recipients$were$$announced$by$His$Excellency$The$Governor$of$Western$Australia$Malcolm$McCusker$AO$CVO$QC$at$a$National$Volunteer$Week$Gala$Awards$Presentation$Dinner$on$Wednesday$15$May$2013$in$the$Grand$Ballroom$at$the$Hyatt$Regency$Perth$Hotel.$$$Dawn$is$currently$President$of$National$Council$of$Women$WA$and$OMEP$and$was$nominated$by$Judith$Parker$and$Hilary$Silbert.$

$For$our$committee$member$Lalani$Weddikkara,$it$was$a$great$experience$to$work$with$the$Collaboration$partners$on$the$International$Women’s$Day$breakfast$committee.$$She$very$much$enjoyed$getting$to$know$the$team$that$met$once$a$month$from$September$and$about$twice$a$month$from$January$to$March.$Meetings$to$place$at$Carole$Theobald's$(President%of%Zonta)%home,$which$made$the$meetings$seem$less$formal.$$Show$bag$stuffing$day$was$on$the$2nd$of$March$at$SouthCare's$facility$in$the$old$Uniting$Church$at$Bickley$Road$Manning,$where$Lalani$was$among$the$volunteers$who$were$there$to$help$stuff$the$bags$from$10a.m$until$they$had$finished$and$tidied$up.$$Lalani$also$volunteered$to$help$on$the$day$of$the$breakfast$by$checking$names$as$people$came$in$and$pointing$out$the$seating$allocations.$$Lalani$also$entertained$the$guest$speaker$Senior$Magistrate$Rosie$Johnson$from$Papua$New$Guinea,$taking$her$out$for$lunch$at$Louis$Baxter's$in$Subiaco$and$then$taking$her$back$to$her$Hotel.$This$was$wonderful$opportunity$as$GW$(WA)$convenor$for$peace$and$security$to$discuss$the$role$of$women$in$Papua$New$Guinea.$As$Rosie$Johnson$explained$at$length$when$giving$her$International$Women’s$Day$talk$at$the$breakfast,$women$in$Papua$New$Guinea$are$often$not$respected$by$men$and$many$are$badly$physically$mistreated.$$$Lalani$has$attended$the$International$Women's$day$breakfast$since$it$began$in$Perth,$doing$this$both$as$a$representative$of$Graduate$Women,$and$as$herself.$$$

Earlier$this$year,$the$President$of$IFUW,$Marianne$Haslegrave$wrote$to$the$Government$of$the$Maldives$after$reports$of$the$prosecution$of$a$15$year$old$sexual$abuse$victim.$$This$response$was$sent.$$Dear$Sir/Madam,$$We$thank$you$for$your$email$expressing$your$concerns$regarding$the$case$of$the$15_$year$old$victim$of$sexual$abuse.$As$requested$your$concerns$have$been$forwarded$to$the$relevant$authorities$in$the$Maldives.$$We$would$like$to$take$this$to$opportunity$to$inform$you$that$the$Government$of$Maldives$strongly$shares$your$concerns,$and$is$disappointed$by$the$Juvenile$Court’s$decision$to$sentence$this$young$girl$to$flogging,$when$she$turns$18$years,$on$the$alleged$case$of$pre_marital$sex.$The$Government$is$adamant$in$its$belief$that$the$young$girl$is$the$victim$of$sexual$abuse$and$maintains$that$she$be$treated$as$such$by$both$the$State$and$society.$The$young$girl$in$question$is$currently$under$the$care$of$the$State,$and$receiving$the$appropriate$physical$and$psychological$counselling.$In$this$regard,$we$are$happy$to$share$that$the$case$now$has$been$appealed,$and$the$President$has$requested$the$Judiciary$to$resolve$the$issue$as$soon$as$possible.$Please$be$assured$that$the$Government$will$do$everything$it$can$to$facilitate$and$supervise$the$appeal’s$process$via$the$girl’s$lawyer.$The$Government$believes$such$cases$should$never$be$presented$to$the$Courts$in$the$first$place.$$$In$view$of$the$urgent$attention$needed$in$this$area$the$Government$has$called$upon$Parliament$to$immediately$pass$pending$Bills$essential$to$reforming$the$criminal$and$juvenile$justice$systems,$ensuring$our$legislation$is$in$accordance$with$universally$accepted$norms$and$principles.$Additionally,$in$February$2013,$soon$after$the$sentence$was$passed,$the$Government$established$a$committee,$comprising$various$State$Ministries$including$the$Ministry$of$Gender,$Family,$and$Human$Rights$and$the$Family$Protection$

AND THE FINAL EVENT FOR THE YEAR WILL BE OUR LONG-AWAITED LAUNCH OF OUR HISTORY. 1973-2013 ON SATURDAY 7TH DECEMBER 2013 FOR HIGH TEA AND GRACIOUS LIVING.

Authority$of$Maldives$to$review$existing$child$protection$mechanisms.$The$Committee$has$commenced$its$review$and$is$currently$taking$its$lead$from$a$previous$Child$Abuse$Prevention$study$conducted$by$UNICEF$in$collaboration$with$the$Ministry$of$Gender$in$identifying$areas$of$serious$concern.$The$Government$is$hopeful$that$in$the$coming$weeks$these$areas$of$concern$will$be$addressed$and$recommendations$made$by$the$committee$will$be$implemented.$Furthermore,$the$Government$is$confident$that$its$discussion$with$various$international$stakeholders$including$the$Special$Representative$of$the$Secretary$General$of$the$United$Nations$on$Violence$Against$Children,$who$has$recently$been$invited$to$visit$the$Maldives,$will$help$expedite$the$implementation$of$these$recommendations.$$The$Maldives$is$party$to$a$number$of$International$frameworks$aimed$at$the$preservation$of$human$rights$and$the$rights$of$children$are$protected$not$only$under$the$United$Nation’s$Convention$on$the$Rights$of$the$Child$but$also$by$corresponding$domestic$legislation$in$the$Maldives.$However,$the$verdict$returned$for$this$case$has$highlighted$the$critical$need$to$review$existing$mechanisms$and$legal$framework$available$for$protecting$the$rights$of$children$in$the$Maldives.$The$Government$of$Maldives$is$strongly$committed$to$reforming$these$systems$and$to$upholding$our$commitments$made$to$international$frameworks$aimed$at$the$preservation$of$human$rights.$We$can$assure$you$that$protecting$the$rights$of$our$citizens$and$indeed$our$children$is$of$paramount$importance$to$the$Government$of$Maldives$and$it$is$the$protection$of$these$rights$that$form$the$very$foundations$upon$which$the$Government$is$attempting$to$strengthen$democracy$in$the$Maldives,$which$balances$our$religious$faith.$The$Government$urges$all$partners,$national$and$international,$to$join$us$in$these$efforts.$$We$thank$you$for$showing$interest$in$Maldives.$$$$Permanent$Mission$of$the$Maldives$to$the$UN$and$other$organizations$at$Geneva$Chemin$Louis_Dunant$15B$(3rd$Floor)$CH_1202,$Geneva$T:$+41$22$730$1276$F:$+41$22$732$63$39$E:[email protected]$web:$maldivesmission.ch$

I$am$so$grateful$for$the$2010$Mary$Walters$Bursary.$The$award$enabled$me$to$present$my$

research$at$international$conferences$and$laboratories,$and$spend$time$with$my$external$

supervisor,$Dr$Karen$Reilly,$in$her$lab$in$France.$Attending$conferences$and$visiting$international$

labs$in$the$final$year$of$my$PhD$had$an$enormous$influence$on$the$completion$of$my$PhD$and$my$

future$as$a$scientist.$The$travel$not$only$renewed$my$motivation$and$passion$for$research,$

enabling$me$to$complete$my$thesis,$but$also$provided$an$opportunity$to$network$and$form$

relationships$with$senior$researchers,$which$led$to$the$offer$of$a$post_doctoral$position.$

I$am$currently$in$the$second$year$of$a$post_doc$with$A/Prof$Michael$Ridding$at$the$University$of$

Adelaide.$My$current$research$aims$are$focussed$on$the$potential$of$non_invasive$brain$

stimulation$to$induce$behaviourally_important$changes$in$motor$areas$of$the$brain.$The$end$goal$

is$the$development$of$more$effective,$targeted$rehabilitation$interventions$for$people$who$have$

suffered$a$stroke$and$other$neurological$disorders$affecting$the$motor$system.$$

It$was$an$absolute$pleasure$to$see$members$of$Graduate$Women$WA$at$my$graduation$ceremony$

earlier$this$year.$Thank$you$again$for$the$2010$bursary,$I$am$so$grateful.$

Dr.'Kari'Pitts'(nee'Smith)''Unfortunately,$I$am$unable$to$attend$the$event$as$I$have$an$11$month$old$and$am$working$full_

time,$which$as$you$may$know$makes$going$anywhere$in$the$evenings$challenging.$I$am$very$

grateful$to$Graduate$Women$(WA)$for$the$award$I$received$in$2005.$It$allowed$me$to$travel$to$the$

US$and$undertake$a$7$week$collaboration$with$the$Forensic$Research$Group$based$at$Florida$

International$University.$The$work$I$did$there$resulted$in$valuable$data$for$my$now$completed$

PhD$as$well$as$allowed$me$to$make$valuable$contacts$for$my$chosen$career.$

After$returning$from$the$US$at$the$end$of$2005,$I$completed$the$lab$work$for$my$PhD$and$

accepted$a$position$in$2006$as$a$Chemist$in$the$Physical$Evidence$Section$of$the$Forensic$Science$

Laboratory$of$ChemCentre,$where$I$still$happily$work.$I$graduated$with$my$PhD$in$September$

2009,$as$I$was$working$full_time$whilst$writing$it.$I$am$now$a$reporting$analyst$in$trace$evidence$

and$have$given$expert$evidence$in$a$number$of$criminal$trials.$

WA$flying$into$Perth$at$8$p.m.$from$the$Kimberley,$where$I$still$do$research$(the$original$award$

helped$me$start$that$all$those$years$ago).$

I$just$wanted$to$mention$that$the$award$meant$a$great$deal$to$me.$$500$may$not$sound$like$much$

but$it$was$very$important$as$i$had$no$research$funds$other$than$the$stipend$and$my$project$was$

innovative$for$a$historian$falling$outside$many$of$the$funding$support$guidelines$to$fly$to$England$

or$Europe$to$an$archive,$and$the$grant$got$me$to$the$Kimberley$to$record$histories$with$women.$

It$also$was$a$big$confidence$boost$for$an$early$researcher.$

rest$for$6$weeks$following$surgery$2$weeks$ago.$I$am$a$physiotherapist$and$was$a$PhD$student$

investigating$musculoskeletal$problems$in$children$learning$instrumental$music$when$I$applied$

for$the$bursary.$I$was$also$5$months$pregnant$when$I$was$awarded$the$Jill$Bradshaw$Bursary$and$

my$second$son,$James,$was$born$January$13th$2009.$I$was$awarded$the$2010$Alice$G.$

Brandfonbrener$Young$Investigator$of$the$year$award$by$the$International$Performing$Arts$

Medicine$Association.$The$bursary$enabled$me$to$attend$and$present$at$the$Performing$Arts$

Medicine$$symposium$in$Colorado,$USA,$July$2010.I$completed$my$doctoral$studies$May$2012,$

and$continue$to$lecture$at$the$School$of$Physiotherapy,$Curtin$University$and$work$in$clinical$

practice$in$the$area$of$hand$and$upper$limb$physiotherapy$with$a$special$interest$in$musicians.$$

I’m$very$sorry$I’m$not$here$with$you$this$evening$on$this$auspicious$occasion$to$present$to$you$my$research.$However,$I$am$happy$to$announce$the$reason$for$my$absence.$I$am$currently$in$Broome$preparing$for$a$seed$collecting$field$trip$along$the$Gibb$River$road$in$the$Kimberley,$which$has$been$made$possible$by$receiving$the$Mary$Walters$Bursary$in$2012.$I$have$also$been$able$to$plan$several$other$collecting$trips$to$the$Northern$Territory$and$QLD,$which$I$hope$will$contribute$greatly$to$the$scope$of$my$PhD.$$

$The$waterlilies$are$an$ancient$group$of$flowering$plants$that$evolved$during$the$early$Cretaceous$(ca$135MYA)$and$form$the$base$of$the$family$tree$of$all$flowering$plants.$Waterlilies$are$cosmopolitan$in$distribution,$with$members$of$the$genus$found$on$every$continent$except$Antarctica.$In$Australia,$they$are$found$in$the$monsoonal$northern$regions$of$WA,$NT,$QLD$and$northern$NSW.$These$enigmatic$plants$have$long$been$of$interest$to$humans,$and$were$often$utilised$for$religious$and$medicinal$purposes$in$Ancient$Egyptian,$Mayan,$Indian$and$Chinese$cultures.$They%are$also$culturally$significant$to$Indigenous$Australians,$as$the$plants’$fruit$still$form$part$of$their$staple$diet$throughout$the$dry$season.$More$recently,$water$lilies$have$become$of$interest$to$botanists$and$horticulturists$as$ornamental$plants.$Despite$their$popularity,$little$research$has$been$conducted$regarding$seed$biology,$dispersal$and$ecology$of$the$genera.$$$While$the$waterlilies$may$currently$enjoy$a$worldwide$distribution,$the$wetlands$that$they$inhabit$are$increasingly$under$threat.$Processes$including$water$diversion,$draining,$eutrophication,$competition$with$weeds$and$climate$change$are$contributing$to$a$reduction$in$aquatic$plant$species$diversity$worldwide.$In$Northern$Australia,$wetland$ecosystems$remain$relatively$pristine$and$intact,$yet$their$remote$location$and$inaccessibility$have$limited$botanical$research$in$the$past.$However,$the$increasing$threats$from$human$disturbance$and$the$potential$impact$of$climate$change$(through$altered$hydrologic$regimes$and$saltwater$intrusion)$may$prove$detrimental$to$these$unique$systems.$$While$in$Australia,$there$has$been$a$reasonable$effort$to$conserve$fragile$aquatic$ecosystems$in$reserves,$threatening$processes$are$complex$and$management$alone$will$not$mitigate$all$threats.$Therefore,$investment$in$other$conservation$measures$such$as$ex%situ%seed$banking$forms$an$essential$component$of$biodiversity$management$for$the$continued$preservation$of$important$plant$species.$Ongoing$research$aims$to$develop$an$increased$understanding$of$how$best$to$conserve$at_risk$floras$through$field$and$laboratory$studies$of$ecology$and$reproductive$biology.$$$This$is$where$my$PhD$research$comes$in.$My$PhD$project$is$the$first$comprehensive$study$relating$to$the$seed$ecology$of$the$genus$Nymphaea%and$the$first$to$examine$habitat$variability$and$ecological$preferences$for$Nymphaea$through$Northern$Australia.$Overall,$I$hope$to$be$able$to$answer$two$main$questions:$$1. How$does$the$seed$germination$ecology$and$dispersal$mechanisms$of$Australian$Nymphaea$

affect$their$distribution$in$northern$Australia?$2. How$does$seed$storage$behaviour$affect$seeds’$ability$to$be$stored$ex%situ?$$$Worldwide,$the$knowledge$of$the$seed$biology$of$waterlilies%is$very$limited$and$what$information$is$available$generally$relates$to$temperate$European$species.$Tropical$Australian$species$grow$in$extremely$different$climatic$conditions$to$their$European$counterparts$as$they$experience$the$typical$tropical$‘wet_dry’$conditions.$This$project$will$have$significant$outcomes$for$a$range$of$environmental$and$conservation$agencies,$including$national$and$state$environmental$

Heather'Rogers$$

Heather$was$born$in$England,$went$to$school$there$as$well$as$in$Germany$and$France,$obtained$her$first$degree$in$Leicester,$emigrated$to$Australia$at$the$age$of$22$as$a$“Ten$Pound$Pom”$and$began$teaching$German$and$French$in$Sydney.$$

After$teaching$in$Sydney,$England,$Germany$and$Townsville,$Heather$came$to$Perth$and$did$a$BEd$degree$at$Edith$Cowan$University,$while$

teaching$German$at$St.$Mary’s.$$

Heather$then$moved$to$New$York,$completed$her$Masters$and$PhD$degrees$at$New$York$University,$before$returning$to$Perth$six$years$ago.$$

As$a$firm$believer$in$life_long$learning,$Heather$decided,$in$her$60s,$to$do$a$Bachelor$degree$in$Italian$at$UWA,$graduating$in$20.$Studying$with$teenagers$she$said$was$great$fun$and$made$her$feel$like$a$“recycled$teenager”!$$

Heather$was$invited$by$Karen$Wood$to$join$the$Graduate$Women’s$Book$Club$and$that$is$how$she$has$now$become$a$member$of$the$Graduate$Women’s$Group.$

A$thank$you$morning$tea$was$held$at$the$Park$Road$office$for$members$who$had$helped$out$with$gown$hire$during$the$graduatation$ceremony$period$at$UWA.$$Amongst$those$able$to$attend$were$(from%left),%but$of$course$our$thanks$is$extended$to$all$contributors,$many$of$whom$were$unable$to$attend.%%%

The''Graduate'Women'WA'Gala'Prize'night$was$held$on$Tuesday$21st$May$2013$in$the$Roberta$Jull$Room$at$St$Catherine’s$College.$This$year$the$event$was$marked$by$the$presence$of$not$only$current$winners$and$members,$but$as$special$guests,$$many$past$winners.$The$evening$was$a$wonderfully$festive$occasion$and$a$great$celebration$of$educational$achievement$by$women.$$Graduate$Women$WA$($and$formerly$as$AFUW(WA)$)have$awarded$a$total$of$146$Post_graduate$Bursaries$and$Scholarships,$including$the$five$winners$tonight.$$$The$first$Post_graduate$Bursary,$the$AFUW$(WA)$Foundation$Bursary$was$inaugurated$in$1971$(Value$$250),$and$presented$to$Shirley$Watt,$who$is$still$a$member$of$Graduate$Women$WA$today.$It$is$open$to$women$enrolled$for$a$higher$degree$by$research$in$any$discipline.$It$is$funded$currently$from$the$profits$of$Academic$Dress$Hire.$$

$4,388'awarded'to'Emma'Steel'

Emma'Steel$studied$her$undergraduate$degree$at$Murdoch$University$attaining$a$double$major$in$Biology$and$Environmental$Science,$with$first$Class$Honours$in$Biology.$She$worked$in$research$into$Dieback$Resistant$Jarrah$for$rehabilitation$of$mine$sites$and$various$other$projects.$$After$several$years$of$bringing$up$her$children$and$working$in$the$family$business,$she$returned$to$study$her$PhD$on$the$Effect$of$Drought$on$Jarrah$Forest$Vegetation.$She$is$interested$in$the$resilience$of$forest$and$woodland$systems$and$how$they$survive$and$adapt$to$environmental$changes$and$management$strategies.$$

The'Mary'Walters'Bursary$was$the$first$memorial$bursary$established$by$AFUW(WA)$Inc.$It$was$inaugurated$in$1977.$It$is$now$known$as$the$Graduate$Women$WA$Mary$Walters$Scholarship.$Members$of$AFUW(WA)$and$Mary’s$husband,$along$with$friends,$colleagues$and$family$put$together$the$capital$which$enabled$a$bursary$to$be$awarded$shortly$after$her$death.$The$fund$has$also$received$contributions$from$the$profits$of$academic$dress$hire.$The$scholarship$is$open$to$women$enrolled$for$a$higher$degree$by$research$in$Science.$$

!Laura'Masters$completed$her$Bachelor$of$Science$in$Microbiology$and$Genetics$with$1st$class$honours$in$2006.$She$worked$as$a$research$assistant$with$two$virology$research$groups$before$deciding$to$embark$on$a$PhD.$Her$PhD$research$project$focuses$on$Cytomegalovirus$immune$evasion$strategies$in$the$mouse$model$of$this$important$human$pathogen.$$$

2012'Graduate'Women'WA'Joyce'Riley'Scholarship''

$1,950'has'been'awarded'to'Helena'Kadmos'

$Helena'Kadmos$has$a$background$in$teaching$and$community$work,$but$for$the$past$six$years$has$applied$herself$to$academic$research,$where$she$draws$on$feminist$theory$to$examine$representations$of$women’s$lives$in$narrative$fiction.$Her$Masters$thesis,$titled$“The$Cave:$a$search$for$the$mother’s$story$in$narrative$literature”,$was$completed$in$2010,$and$her$PhD$project$extends$that$work$while$focusing$on$the$short$story$cycle.$She$enjoys$both$critical$and$creative$aspects$of$research,$and$is$currently$writing$an$original$work$of$fiction.$Her$creative$pieces$have$been$published$in$journals$and$anthologies.$$

The$St$Catherine’s$College$Scholarship$commenced$in$1986$and$as$Founders$of$the$College,$Graduate$Women$has$a$position$on$their$Council.$
