A Note From Your Director
¨ We are closed on Friday, January 1st for New Years, and on Monday, January 18th for Martin Luther King Day. There are no activities at the Center on those days.
¨ Winter is upon us and we ask that you please be careful on icy roads, parking lots, and sidewalks. If you’re feeling uncomfortable venturing out, please trust your instincts and stay safe inside. Also make sure to check to see if we are closed before heading out, as we often close during inclement weather.
Happy New Year 2016 to everyone. If
you’re like me, you cannot believe another year
has come and gone. Perhaps time goes so
quickly, because we are keeping you so busy with the multitude of activities we provide for
you to do here at your senior center.
Did you know that 2016 is a milestone year
for CRSC? It was in 1971, 45 years ago, that a
little group of folks formed a “seniors club” in
Castle Rock. Did you notice we redesigned the
cover of “Rockin’ Seniors” to honor our past and celebrate our 45 years
throughout 2016? Stay tuned for an official celebration, because I know that we all enjoy a party. Meanwhile, be proud of the heritage of this organization you belong
to, since not many groups thrive for this long.
As we move into 2016, you’ll also begin to see us referring to our organization
as the Castle Rock Senior Activity Center; note our updated logo on the front cover.
It isn’t a big change, but will help solidify what we are all about as we seek funding
and promote ourselves to the community and beyond. This was a change approved
by our Board of Directors.
Speaking of the Board of Directors, I would like to publicly thank Rich Smoski
for his years of dedication to our Center as President of our board. You really have no idea the responsibility of our President - the decisions that must continually be
made, the time involved participating in meetings, and the issues to be dealt with on
a daily basis. We’ve all benefitted from all that Rich has done, and we are so glad
he will still be driving and around to dole out the ice cream!! I would also like to
congratulate Doris Rollins, who was elected as the new President, beginning
January 1st. I look forward to working with her and seeing where the future takes us. ~ Debbi
Our new Massage Therapist, Cheryl Eastburn, is actually a Colorado native, as is her husband. She was born in Boulder, and she and her husband of 36 years, Don, have lived in Surrey Ridge since the 80’s. She had plans to become a pharmacist after a long career as a Pharmacy Tech, but decided to do something more hands-on to help people. She has been giving therapeutic massages for 13 years and loves being able to help people get out of pain, sometimes turning people’s lives around. She absolutely loves what she does and hopes to do this work for years to come. While it’s a physically demanding job, she keeps herself in shape as she’s very active, loving to hike, bike, and snowshoe. She also cooks and does some sewing. They have very close friends who live in Moscow, and she has been to Russia eight times, each trip filled with adventures. Please schedule an appointment with Cheryl and see what massage can do for you.
THANK YOU

This was the BEST Craft Show yet.
Your staff are truly amazed by the ALL the wonderful volunteers. You all went above and beyond once again with everything that you did. Thank you so much for each of “YOU” – bakers, crafters,
knitters, crocheters, seamstresses, quilters, painters, librarians, gardeners, artists, writers, phone callers, drivers, balloon artists, tickets sellers, greeters, loaders, unloaders, packers, unpackers,
auction gatherers & watchers, cashiers, and anyone who just smiled and said, “How can I help?”
Words just can’t express how thankful we are for all of you and for what a team effort this event truly is. Thank you to the Board of Directors, the community and the staff’s families, too.
Don’t shoot us, but here’s to next year!! We can’t wait to see what we can do for our 24th year during our 45th Anniversary Year!!! Thank you from the bottom of our hearts; we love you ALL!!

Many of you have weathered numerous Colorado winters, but not all of you. If you are
new to Colorado, you have already discovered that snows here are often gone in three
days or less, and it really is possible to have a 40 degree temperature change in a couple
of hours when a weather front moves into the area. With an El Nino condition this year,
we could be receiving more than average snow until this spring. While El Nino is defined
as warmer than usual surface temperatures in the Eastern Pacific Ocean, it usually means increased precipitation for us.
Below are some helpful winter preparedness items. Stay warm and safe!!
Winter Storm Warning - issued when a significant combination of hazardous winter weather is occurring or imminent.
Blizzard Warning - means the following conditions are occurring or expected within the next 12 to 18 hours: 1) Snow and/or blowing snow reducing visibility to ¼ mile; and 2) sustained winds or
frequent gusts of 35 mph or greater.
Check your supplies now - make sure you have several days worth of these items: foods needing no cooking or refrigeration, such as crackers,
cereal, dried fruit, dried or canned milk, canned foods like tuna fish and
fruit; 5 gallons of water per person in case your pipes burst, and
medicines that you may need. If you live in a remote location, you will
need additional amounts of these supplies.
Keeping warm - as a senior, you often make less body heat because of a slower metabolism and less physical activity. Plus, conditions like
hypothyroidism, arthritis, and Parkinson’s Disease can affect your body’s
ability to stay warm, so check the temperature in your home often when
it’s really cold outside. Also, check on friends to ensure that their homes
are adequately heated.
If you have to go outside, remember to cover your face and mouth. Wear
a hat, scarf, mittens (warmer than gloves), and several layers of loose
clothing with a wind resistant outer layer. Excess perspiration will
increase heat loss, so remove extra layers of clothing whenever you feel
too warm. (Info sources: CDC, NOAA)

Make someone’s day - send them a card.
We’ll address it if you don’t have the address.
Most everyone shops at King Soopers at least once in
awhile.
Here is an easy way for your regular shopping to make some continual money for the Senior Center. Make a
one-time purchase of a King Soopers Gift Card at our Front Desk in $25, $50 or
$100 increments.
Use them at any King Soopers as you would any gift card, then reload them at the customer service desk at the store and keep
paying for your groceries with them. If you want credit card points, use your credit card to refill the King Soopers card. The Center gets a rebate back with each dollar you spend from the card.

Our bingo here at the Center is fun, but if you have ever thought you are ready for something
bigger than a nickel a card, you should consider coming with us on any Thursday
morning when we head to Lakewood to the Slammers Bingo Hall. Payouts here are in the
hundreds and the atmosphere is electric because of it. Check the schedule to see if we stop for
brunch on the way (we leave at 9:00) or if we just go for the Bingo (leaving at 10). Activity Fee doesn’t include food purchases or bingo fees.
Come with us - you might just win.

Back by popular demand, we are headed back to Dazzle for a delicious lunch (on your own off the menu) and some

walking. Limited to the first 14 people to sign up.
If you are new here, please come to one of our monthly “meet and greet” events. This is an informal time, with
refreshments available, to ask questions, meet some people and find
out how to get involved. We also invite you to stay after our meeting
for lunch here at the Center.

There will not be a meeting of Remembering our Veterans this month. This special interest group meets to hear stories related to the military in any way and is looking for speakers to share at their monthly meetings. If you have a topic to share or know of anyone who might be willing to tell his or her story of military service, or that of someone else, please contact the group’s facilitator, Larry Adams, at 303-660-1857. He is scheduling speakers beginning in February. There are so many stories to share - we just need to get in touch with those who are willing.
Representatives from human services are here one day a month to help members see if they qualify for a variety of
services. There is no appointment needed.

We will return in time for transportation home for our riders.

OUT TO DINNER — Hacienda Colorado, Lone Tree Wednesday, January 6 4:45 PM $5 ($11 non-members) After all the turkey and ham of the holidays, it’s time to spice it up a bit, so join us to go to Hacienda Colorado which is known for adding a Rocky Mountain twist to Mexican favorites for something completely new, which they call “Mountain Mex.” You’ll choose from a variety like original fish tacos with mahi-mahi, enchiladas, chimichangas or Front Range Fajitas. Activity Fee does not include the cost of your individual dinner.
EGG & I BREAKFAST & LUNCH FUNDRAISER Wednesday, January 13 6:00 AM - 2:00 PM We are excited to again offer this local breakfast and lunch only restaurant as a Dining-to-Donate event. Get up early, go treat
yourself to a great breakfast, and raise some funds for the Senior Center at the same time. Take the flyer on page 6 and go eat there anytime on this day - a portion of your payment will be donated back to the Center. Remember the flyer.
OUT TO LUNCH — The Briarwood Inn, Golden Friday, January 15th 10:30 AM $9 ($15 non-members) USA Today says that The Briarwood Inn is Colorado’s favorite restaurant, and they are now open for lunch so we’re going to go see if the reviewers are right. The setting of this family owned tradition is idyllic, reminiscent of a European country inn with chandeliers, stained glass, plush seating, glowing fireplaces and antiques. The cuisine and service are unparalleled. Please realize that this is a very special dining experience, but because we are going for lunch, the prices are more reasonable. The special lunch menu ranges from a Brioche Grilled Cheese and Tomato Soup entree for $15 to a trio of lobster, filet and apricot-glazed chicken for $46. Activity Fee does not include the cost of your individual lunch.
OUT TO DINNER — Western Trails Steakhouse, Kiowa Tuesday, January 19 4:45 PM $6 ($12 non-members) We’re headed out to ranchland for steaks some say are as good as you can get. You’ll find steaks and beef of every variety on the menu, along with a variety of other entrees like chicken or seafood. This is hearty good food, and plenty of it, for reasonable prices, and was recommended for us to try. Activity Fee does not include the cost of your individual dinner.

MUSICAL THEATER - “Funny Girl” at Vintage Theatre Sunday, January 10 Leave at 1:00 PM $31 ($37 non-members) With familiar classics like People and Don’t Rain on My Parade, “Funny Girl” is one of the great musicals of our time. It not only made Barbra Streisand a star, it has been reprised countless times and enjoyed by every generation. It’s the bittersweet story of Fanny Brice, a vibrant young woman on the New York City vaudeville stage around the time of World War I, becomes a star in the Ziegfeld Follies and eventually works her way up to stardom on Broadway. Fanny thrives, but the relationship with her suave, imprisoned businessman husband, is another story. They are reserving center seats for us, and we are leaving early to ensure parking spots for the bus; Vintage’s new theater is worth it as everyone who has gone says it is a wonderful place to see a show.
CASINO TRIP - The Lodge in Blackhawk Tuesday, January 12 8:30 AM $10 ($16 non-members) You know this casino from their constant commercials on television, and many of our members say it brings them great luck. Hope for no snow! Your Activity Fee does not include gambling and food costs.
TRIP - Pro Rodeo at the National Western Stock Show Thursday, January 21 9:00 AM $26 ($32 non-members) The National Western Stock Show is the premiere livestock event in the country, featuring more cowboys in one place than you’ve ever seen. We will also have plenty of time to walk through the exhibits and to eat lunch (on your own) either during the show or after in one of the concessions. Activity Fee includes your bus trip, rodeo ticket and en-trance to the Stock Show. There will be quite a bit of walking involved and we will not be returning until late afternoon. We have 15 tickets included in fee.
SHOPPING TRIP - Saver’s/Dollar Tree/new Goodwill Tuesday, January 26 9:45 AM $5 ($11 non-members) It’s Senior Day at Saver’s in Highlands Ranch, so everything is 30% off - you never know what great treasures you’ll find. Plus, you can walk to Dollar Tree and a new Goodwill store nearby. After everyone shops, we’ll go to “On the Border” for a Mexican bite to each for lunch (on your own).
TRIP - Wyeth Exhibit at Denver Art Museum Thursday, January 28 9:15 AM $19 ($25 non-members) Deadline to sign-up is 1:00 PM on Thursday, January 7th There is no cold and gloom of winter at an art museum, so come with us and enjoy not only seeing some of the great works at the Denver Art Museum, but also enjoy an audio tour of the “Wyeth: Andrew and Jamie in the Studio” temporary exhibit on display for just a short time. What a great way to get yourself out of the winter doldrums. You’ll be on your own to eat at the museum’s Palette Restaurant or Mad Greens across the street. We will board the buses to return at 2:00 PM. NOTE: This is a ticketed non-refundable event and the deadline to sign-up and to pay is 1:00 PM on Thursday, January 7th.

SPECIAL PRESENTATION - “Climate and Antarctica”
Thursday, January 14 12:30 PM No Activity Fee One of the greatest aspects of our Center is the diversity and wealth of knowledge of our members, and we love to use that when we can. Dr. Ken Knoll, who joined the Center in 2015, has a PhD from the University of Kansas in Glacial Geology and Global Climates. He has studied aspects of geology in Alaska, the North Pole, South America and spent time exploring Antarctica, which he will share in a fascinating presentation with photos and intimate knowledge of glaciers, icebergs, sea life, beach dwellers and more that most of us will never be lucky enough to see. WEATHER CLOSURE INFORMATION
We occasionally close the Center to keep everyone safe and
off icy and snowy roads, not always following the school
closures. Sometimes we may delay our opening.
There are 4 ways to check to see whether we are closed or opening late: 1) Call the Center and listen to the message - if there is no special
message, we are open; 2) Watch 9NEWS, CBS4 and Fox 31 - our information will be scrolled across the bottom of the screen; 3) Check
the homepage NEWS on our website as we will post it - you must actually go into the website, not just look below the map if you Google
it; 4) Like us on Facebook and you will receive notices. We try to have these announcements in place by 7:00 AM, although please
understand that occasionally we have technology issues. Also, in the event of a delayed opening, please check our phone message before coming to the Center, just in case we have to close. Thank you for
understanding as we make decisions regarding your safety.
The Rec Center provides indoor courts for us for Pickleball. We have round-robin games during
these open times. You do need to sign-in and pay at the Rec Center. Call Dan Mitchell
303-653-1639 with questions.
AARP provides free tax preparation on
Wednesdays/Fridays from Feb 3-April 15 in
the mobile unit behind the facility.
Appointments will be made from 9:00 AM
through 3:00 PM. Schedule your time through
the front desk. Spots fill quickly.
It seems that 2015 just began and here we are at another new year. Happy New Year. Our library is already getting new donations of books - many people ask at the Craft Show if
they can donate books to us, and they have started doing so. Every January is a new year and a time of new beginnings; go try new things, visit new places, welcome new people
into your life and see things in new ways.

Outgoing President, Rich Smoski, presided over the meeting where
each board member gave a short synopsis of the accomplishments
of the past year at the Senior Center. Following the business
meeting, Doris Rollins was elected President, and Vivien Semryck
was elected Secretary. Congratulations and thank you to them
both for their dedication to the Castle Rock Senior Center.
A recurring theme of the reports
was “increase.” Phyllis Tumey, left,
reported that fundraising efforts
have surpassed last year. Joan
Goldberg explained that off-site trip
participation has increased 19% in
the past 12 months. Jim Decker
stated that 206 new members have
joined the Center in 2015. Bill Kelly
reported that we have provided
6520 shuttle rides from January-
October, and put nearly 30,000
miles on our buses for activity trips
in that same time frame.
A highlight of the meeting
was presenting our own
“energizer bunny” Rich
Smoski, with his own
energizer bunny. Rich’s last
meeting as President will be
in December, when the
Board will more formally
recognize his contributions -
but anyone who knows him
knows that he has more
energy and drive than many
of us combined, so this was a
fitting tribute to our outgoing
President.
