Learning Targets

I can list the functions of the circulatory system.

I can give examples of materials needed by cells to function.

I can give an example of waste that is taken away from cells.

I can list the 2 major structures of the circulatory system.

I can list the chambers of the heart. I can put the flow of blood through the heart

and rest of the body in order

Oxygen

See how small oxygen is?!

That’s how it can just sneak in and out of alveoli, blood vessels, and cells…

2 Major Structures:

Heart Blood Vessels

Yes, if you could take everything else out and just have your blood vessels… your leg and head would look like these! You are FULL of blood vessels!

You will be taken to a website on blood flow through the heart. Read the first 5 paragraphs. (Don’t read the “We Got the Beat” section.) You will then complete a Fill-in-the-Blank.

Fill in the Blank:Your emotions come from your _______, not your _______. Your heart is on the _______ side of your chest, and it is about the size of your _______. Your heart pumps _______ around your body. It carries _________ and _________ to the cells of your body and brings _________ back away from the cells of your body.

The Heart

The human heart has 4 chambers…› The two top

chambers are called atria (singular = atrium)

› The bottom two chambers are called ventricles

One note….

Make sure you are looking at that person’s right and left NOT YOUR RIGHT AND LEFT!

You will watch 2 videos. The first shows the general flow of blood through the heart, and the second gives very detailed specifics on how blood moves through the heart. After you watch the videos, you will answer a question.

Fill in the Blank:(from http://blog.targethealth.com/?p=25081)

Word Bank:Blood, Beats, Oxygen, Muscle, Valve, direction

The heart is an amazing organ. It continuously pumps oxygen and nutrient-rich ___ throughout the body to sustain life. This fist-sized powerhouse beats (expands and contracts) 100,000 times per day, pumping five or six quarts of blood each minute, or about 2,000 gallons per day. As the heart ___, it pumps blood through a system of blood vessels, called the circulatory system. The vessels are elastic, muscular tubes that carry blood to every part of the body. Blood is essential. In addition to carrying fresh ___ from the lungs and nutrients to the body’s tissues, it also takes the body’s waste products, including carbon dioxide, away from the tissues. This is necessary to sustain life and promote the health of all parts of the body.

Looking at the outside of the heart, you can see that the heart is made of ___. The strong muscular walls contract (squeeze), pumping blood to the rest of the body. On the surface of the heart, there are coronary arteries, which supply oxygen-rich blood to the heart muscle itself. The major blood vessels that enter the heart are the superior vena cava, the inferior vena cava, and the pulmonary veins. The pulmonary artery and the aorta exit the heart and carry oxygen-rich blood to the rest of the body. On the inside, the heart is a four-chambered, hollow organ. It is divided into the left and right side by a muscular wall called the septum. The right and left sides of the heart are further divided into two top chambers called the atria, which receive blood from the veins, and two bottom chambers called ventricles, which pump blood into the arteries. The atria and ventricles work together, contracting and relaxing to pump blood out of the heart. As blood leaves each chamber of

the heart, it passes through a ___. Two of the valves in the heart are the tricuspid valve and mitral valve. The heart valves work

the same way as one-way valves in the plumbing of your home. They prevent blood from flowing in the wrong ___.

I love creating interactive lessons that educators can use to inspire their students’ learning! I hope you found this lesson helpful in engaging all of your learners.

Thank You!Abby
