Sparkle! Show Art’s Hand : An Investigation on Art Labour

Project Curator : Leung Po-shan, AnthonyArtists : Justin Wong, Wilson Shieh, Jaye Rhee, Lawrence Cheng, Joanne Law, Livy Leung, Chivas Leung

Working in the arts is a precarious journey that varies widely : resolve and diligence do not warrant payment; while incompetents land on prestigious jobs with established names in the industry. Despite the obvious, budding talents in Hong Kong seem undeterred from entering art schools as a path to be artists or art administrators. Is art a ‘labour of love’ or a ‘game of chance’? Are the chances only reserved for the prepared ones? Why do people still submit to this impossible process of cobbling together an income that bears no resemblance to the actual value of their labour?

Leung Po-shan, Anthony sees this exhibition as both an action research and an experiment with resource distribution. The exhibition first opens the dialogues with Justin Wong, Wilson Shieh and Jaye Rhee’s works. In the first phase of the exhibition, four fine art fresh graduates are invited to present proposals for their solo exhibitions at four identical booths under the guidance of independent curators Ying Kwok and Suzanna Chung. They will then play Mahjong and the winner of the game will execute his / her exhibition proposal in the second phase of the exhibition, constituting the whole process of art labour through this mini-art fair. To coincide with the exhibition, Oi! partners with orleanlaiproject and invited Vee Leong and four performers to present their durational work, Augury — On A New Day, which explores the contemporary notion of fatigue in relation to labour.

Reconciling the dichotomies of work and play, praxis and theory, openness and self-reflection, ‘Show Art’s Hand : An Investigation on Art Labour’ will peel the intricate layers that comprise the structure of ‘art as labour’ for interstices and openings to a possible emancipation.

Let the ‘P ‧ L ‧ A ‧ Y’ Spirit flow and play to change!

Co-organised by Oi! and Hong Kong Architecture Centre, together with the Hong Kong Institute of Architects as a supporting organisation, ‘PLAY to CHANGE’ invites teams of architects to focus on daily issues related to architecture, and to develop interactive and playful means that could transform their insights and thoughts to communicate with the public. Through participating in the exhibits, the public could exchange ideas and express their views on the urban space.

By organizing a series of inspiring workshops and events regularly through cross-industry collaboration, Oi! hopes to establish a stable platform which connects architects and the general public, promoting dialogues and idea exchange, and letting art spread through the community.

The exhibitions and events from October to December will be of the following topics :

‘PLAY to Display’The exhibition aims to transform architectural photography into installation art and explore the possibility of showcasing photography in different forms, materials and textures. The exhibition venue will be converted into “a room with a view” as pictures of Hong Kong cityscape and architecture are integrated into the installations of the room where visitors can “view” Hong Kong through these brand new media such as furniture, accessories and other daily items.

‘PLAY to Enrich’How residential towers are designed on the outside has always affected the way we use the inside. In this exhibition, architect will try to do the other way round. Visitors will be given a chance to redesign their own flat inside out and hence determine the outlook of our buildings — using only recycled paper shopping bags and giving our neighbourhood a complete facelift!

放浪城市sound in the city

Our city comprises of people’s living experience, stories and emotions, with sound, which has ever existed, which still exists or which is newly-generated. These mean our city’s memories, history and culture. People living in the hustling and bustling city may become too used to the surroundings because of their daily routine, and turn themselves a deaf ear to sound and turn themselves a blind eye to the cityscape.

“sound in the city” is an exhibition series to see our city by bringing invisible sound and visible subject matters together with a mix of a variety of media. Through “sound”, a highly transmittable and fusible medium integrated in many creative disciplinary, the imagery and the soundscape of the city will be formed. Integrating the means of science and aesthetics, audiences are to be reminded their relationship with the environment, be open for any imaginations about their life stories. Different voices come and go, bringing us many possibilities and stories beyond vision.

Participating artistKeith Lam is a new media artist, Co-founder and Artistic Director of New Media Creative Team Dimension Plus & Maker Space LAB by Dimension Plus and Founder of openground.

Topic : Some thoughts on TimeSpeaker : Tam Wai-pingDate : 15.12.2018Language : Cantonese

People never get tired of questioning “time”: time changes ways of thinking about life and death, thus religions exist; philosophers explore the relationship between time and existence; scientists put “time” as a key element when studying the universe, and so on. All these reflect people’s endless curiosities about “time” In the end, it becomes essential to the existence of everything.

Artist uses various approaches to shape the essence of time. His works will reflect some of his imaginations, and the search of sensations about “time”. Time as a concept will be liberated, some inner memories will set free.

Tam Wai-ping graduated from University of Reading and completed his postgraduate study from the Slade School of Fine Art, University College of London. He is the chairman and one of the founders of Art Map. He serves as an Associate Professor in the Department of Fine Arts of The Chinese University of Hong Kong. Tam’s early work explores the definition of real, to search the situational difference between fact and reality. In face of the hardships in reality, he has been trying to find ways to contextualize history and contemporary life in which exploring the relationship between “Individual and Land” and leading to the investigation of “Modernity” in Asian values. His recent interest looks at the relationships between “Text”, “Object” and “Image”, it re-evaluates how art can serve as a cognitive experience. Tam works in various media, and is notable for his photography, installation and environmental art. His works have been exhibited in Hong Kong, China, Taiwan, Macau, Japan, South Korea, Sri Lanka, the Philippines, Australia, the United Kingdom, France, Switzerland and the United States of America.

By integrating aesthetics and technology, this workshop aims at introducing computer programming technique to simulate different natural or artificial motion effects with the help of simple mathematics. Examples are the random motion of snowing, and circular motions with different rhythms. These motion effects can transform to meaningful digital artwork by integrating them with appropriate graphics. Students will learn to export the effects in video format so as to apply them on other video or animation works in future. This workshop takes Processing as teaching language which is the popular programming language used in this field. The workshop is in beginning level and suitable for students who do not familiar with programming. The teaching content takes science and mathematics as approaches to pursue a success of aesthetical achievement. Such approaches are different from the ones in traditional art and spot new direction in the field of creations courageously.

Wong Chung-yu received his Master degree of Computer Science in The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK). Later on he pursued a Master of Art degree in Digital Arts in The Camberwell College of Arts of The University of Arts London with scholarship from The British Council and graduated with Distinction. He remains active in the realms of Painting and Digital Art. For Painting, Wong studied painting in the Fine Art Department of CUHK and continues his exploration particularly in the area of Contemporary Chinese painting. In the field of digital art, Wong attempts to extend the possibility of programming and multimedia application. He particularly focuses himself on the harmonization of digital technology with Chinese context and tried many different approaches, including producing animation generated in real time and random formats, application of 3D modeling in landscape creation, developing a software system to simulate the infiltration effect of ink and further applying it onto digital works, integrating personal paintings with projection of animation, taking camera as a medium to build interactive installations through the use of different analytical methods on camera images, etc. Wong’s art works have been exhibited in Hong Kong, Shanghai, Beijing, Shenzhen, Wuhan, Macau, New York, Norway, and Australia.

medialogue

medialogue aims to spark a dialogue between art and technology, to explore the potential and capability for applying technology in the creation of art, and to consider and extend the boundaries of contemporary art practices. Joining hands with different artists, it is hoped to stimulate a discussion about those practices by asking questions about ideologies in media and art in a constantly changing sociocultural environment, about how media relate to contemporary art practices and how they cultivate aesthetic values and manifest cultural content, about the possibilities and capacity of media art, and about what kind of impact media will have on art practices today and in the future. Starting from October 2018, Morgan Wong and Chris Cheung will create their works of media art respectively at vA!.

Our Feet Are Always Younger than Our HeadsOur Feet Are Always Younger than Our Heads is further Morgan Wong’s research on temporality in the field of science. The work follows the repetitive and durational movement of a dancer in the exhibition — a testament to the absurd effort of trying to reduce the gravitational effect on a person’s biological passage of time. Following the urgency in the irrepressibility of time passing, the effect of gravitational time dilation that slows time by gravity unveils an alternative understanding of the flow of time. The phenomenon, suggested by Albert Einstein in his theory of general relativity and later verified through experiment, manifests that the greater the gravitational force one encounters, the slower time one will experience. Thus, we cannot resist the nature of our feet being younger than our heads. The choreography of Wong’s work was created in collaboration with Jason Yap.

Ink Flow Ink Flow is a generative ink installation in relation to the site environment which then translates the ambience into an transient landscape as Chinese ink paintings. The artistic practice of Chris Cheung reflects his beliefs in Chinese philosophy, and the merge of the traditional and the futuristic ideas. He founded a creative studio, XCEPT (previously XEX), in 2007 and a new media art group, XCEED, in 2013. The collective works have been showcased worldwide.

ArtTravellers Exhibition Series III : Tracing along the Green Blades

The exhibition has been launched on 7 September at Trade and Industry Tower. Featuring two local artists, Carol Lee Mei-kuen and Trevor Yeung, the exhibition shows their unique travelogue of gleanings. Working in different media, Lee and Yeung both take inspiration from a wide variety of exotic plants gathered during their travels and re-express them in personalised artistic forms. Involving botanic observations and discoveries of natural origins, the transformation process creates new artistic idioms and opens up a universal panorama.

Carol Lee Mei-kuen likes to visit historical destinations where she can trace the provenance of culture and observe the natural sequence of events. Picking wild plants along the way, she presses them to retain their shapes in a ‘frozen’ frame of time. When put together, the seemingly insignificant elements form an emblem of foreign lands.

Trevor Yeung, in contrast, gathers different plant species from around the world. Through horticulture and installations, he juxtaposes the relationship between natural landscapes and cultural ecology, while slowly exposing the growth patterns of the plants under photosynthesis. The geographical differences between various species are thus blurred, giving rise to an unusual bonsai art that resembles a miniature urban greenhouse.

Hong Kong House at Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale 2018

Presenter : Leisure and Cultural Services DepartmentOrganiser : Art Promotion Office Collaborators : Executive Committee of Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale and The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts Supporting Organisation : Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office – Tokyo Activity Collaborators : soundpocket, Fleurs des Lettres, Art Appraisal Club and Hong Kong Open Printshop

Hong Kong House, the new art hub organised by the Art Promotion Office which collaborates with the Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale, has been launched on 29 July.

Located in Tsunan Town in Japan, Hong Kong House is designed by Hong Kong architects and serves as a showcase of Hong Kong art talents, a sustainable platform for arts and cultural exchanges, and a signature programme of the 7th Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale. We hope the Hong Kong House will not only be an art space introducing Hong Kong art talents to audiences worldwide, but also become a base for Hong Kong artists to stay and explore the rural nature, local culture and warm hospitality.

The inaugural exhibition of Hong Kong House which features Tsunan Museum of the Lost, a collaborative work of Hong Kong artists Leung Chi Wo + Sara Wong, has been successfully held. It hoped to reaffirm and re-establish the forgotten people and events through the power of art. The artists visited residents and held workshops in Tsunan Town and had the privilege of collecting family albums from the residents. More than 50 old photographs mainly between 1960s and 1970s were selected. Leung and Wong interpreted and reconstructed the characters of unknown people through research, text descriptions, role re-enactments and posed photography, as a way to channel back to bygone, in an attempt to bestow a historical value and significance on the characters in this lost chapter of story.

Throughout the Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale 2018, students of The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, literature magazine Fleurs des Lettres, art critics of Art Appraisal Club and sound art promoter soundpocket, organised a range of art programmes.

For the updated details of this art project and the activities, please visit APO’s website (www.lcsd.gov.hk/apo) and follow the Facebook page of “Hong Kong House at Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale 2018” (www.facebook.com/apo.hkhouse).
