Welcome to SCHOTT

Precise measurements in the labo-

ratory and on-site. With sensors from

Schott.

Schott is Europe’s leading special glass man-

ufacturer and is included in the top group of

these manufacturers worldwide.

We offer customer-oriented solutions for

sophisticated glass applications in the indus-

try, health care and home sectors and are

always in close contact with customers

thanks to the presence of our production

and marketing companies in all of the

World’s key regions.

For more than 60 years, Schott has been

actively involved in the field of pH measure-

ment. Our sensors are tailor-made to suit

your requirements and are known for their

first-rate quality, reliability and long service

life. You will find an overview of these preci-

sion sensors for laboratory and field use

in this catalogue together with all the neces-

sary accessories.

Schott electrodes are manufactured with

great precision and the highest possible

degree of care in accordance with the lat-

est manufacturing methods and each

electrode must pass stringent final inspec-

tion quality requirements.

The Schott electrochemical sensors cover

all applications for measurements in aqueous

solutions: for the determination of pH

value, redox potential, silver-ion and halo-

genide-ion activity, dissolved oxygen,

ammonia, conductivity and temperature.

The various pH glasses developed by Schott

provide a high degree of measuring accura-

cy and reliability for all areas of application.

In practice, the Silamid® reference system

developed by Schott means less measuring

errors due to interference currents as well as

more stable measured-value indications

under critical conditions. Long diffusion dis-

tances in the electrodes make the use of

an additional heavy metal as a silver-ion bar-

rier superfluous. This means improved

measuring functions based on applied

environmental protection.

The most important factor for the quality

of the measurement is the design of the

diaphragm: Here the platinum diaphragm

irrefutably stands for stable and quick

measured-value adjustment in a very broad

range of use. The platinum diaphragm is

very insensitive to flow and stirring condi-

tions. Together with additional types of

diaphragms, we provide the best solution

for practically any measuring medium.

The plug head system developed by Schott

in 1972 (also called S7 or S8) has proved its

reliability millions of times and has been

considered as being the unofficial European

standard for a long time. For sensors that

provide more than simply the pH value,

Schott has developed, in co-operation with

well-known manufacturers of electrodes and

pH meters, the new 6-pole SMEK plug

system. This plug system has also proved its

reliability many times in practice.

For many years Schott has been taking back

all used sensors from its own production

and has ensured that they undergo correct

waste disposal or recycling in accordance

with official regulations.

Do you have any questions about the use

of Schott electrodes? We shall always be

glad to advise you for your specific applica-

tion.

Perfect function, elegant design

The compact BlueLine range covers all the

usual measuring tasks in the laboratory.

Reliable and quick measured-value adjust-

ment within a broad temperature range,

new membrane glass with extraordinary

mechanical stability and improved gel

electrolyte are only a few of the charac-

teristics that speak for the functionality of

these electrodes. For electrodes with

liquid electrolyte, the refilling opening is

tightly sealed with the innovative and

easy to use sliding plug.

On the following pages, we provide recom-

mendations for the use of BlueLine elec-

trodes. Both the BlueLine electrodes and

their accessories are readily available from

your laboratory distributor.

Tips and information for successful measurements

Sensors for all applications

Storage

Redox sensors and pH sensors should be

kept in the solution with which the reference

electrode is also refilled (submerge up to the

diaphragm). In most cases, this is KCl solu-

tion (3 mol/l, type no. L 300). Low-mainte-

nance electrodes are also kept in KCl solu-

tion. Conductivity measuring cells, after

being cleaned and rinsed-off with distilled

water, can be stored in a dry location.

Measuring

With refillable pH sensors and redox sensors,

the refilling opening must be opened in

order to carry out the measurement. The

sensor is then submerged in the measuring

medium at least up to the diaphragm.

With refillable sensors, it is important to pay

attention to the filling level of the electro-

lyte solution (see Refilling). Between mea-

surements, the sensor should be rinsed-

off with distilled water but not wiped off.

Excess droplets can be carefully sponged-off.

Calibrating

Since the measuring characteristics of pH

sensors change with time, they must be cali-

brated at regular intervals using appropriate

pH glasses

Schott electrodes are manufactured with various pH glasses.

These have been optimised for your application and offer a

high degree of measuring accuracy and reliability. Select the

pH glass for your application:

pH glass

N-glass: for general applications across the whole pH range

A-glass: with short response time in drinking water, service

water and waste water; for general application and

in media with low ion content

L-glass: for low temperatures and general applications

H-glass: for high temperatures, in acid and alkaline range,

even with high sodium-ion concentrations

S-glass: in hot alkaline media with good reproducibility and

short response time

buffer solutions. If buffer solutions from bot-

tles are used, the bottles must be closed im-

mediately after use. The buffer solution used

should never be put back into the bottle but

must be discarded instead. If very accurate

calibration is necessary, we recommend

DIN single use ampoules that always contain

fresh high precision solutions. Redox sensors

are not calibrated. Their proper function

can be checked using the appropriate test

solutions. For conductivity measuring cells,

the cell constant should be checked and

adjusted at regular intervals with test solu-

tions. Greater variations in the cell constants

are an indication of soiling or damage.

Refilling

Refillable pH sensors and redox sensors are

refilled with electrolyte solution so that the

filling level of the electrolyte solution is at

least 5 cm above the level of the measuring

medium. With BlueLine electrodes, the easi-

est way to carry out the refilling operation

is to pump the electrolyte solution into the

electrodes using a small dispensing bottle.

Cleaning

A soiled reference electrode should be emp-

tied, rinsed with electrolyte solution and

then filled again with electrolyte solution.

In case of soiling of the glass membrane or

diaphragm, it should be cleaned in order to

maintain the measuring function. Depend-

ing on the degree of soiling, only the glass

membrane or the glass membrane with

the diaphragm is submerged in the cleaning

solution. Cleaning agents that may have

penetrated into the electrode must not be

allowed to get into the reference system; if

required, the reference electrode must be

rinsed-off with distilled water and electrolyte

solution. Depending on the degree of soil-

ing, the methods mentioned below are rec-

ommended.

After being cleaned, the sensor should be

rinsed-off with distilled water, conditioned

in electrolyte solution for 1 hour or longer

and then recalibrated prior to performing

any further measurements.

remedy: electrodes with platinum

diaphragm and Ag+-free electrolyte

Diaphragm

An important factor for a reliable and reproducible pH mea-

surement is the selection of an electrode with a suitable

diaphragm:

Diaphragm

Platinum diaphragm: universal, shows its strength espe-

cially with solutions containing

solids and at extreme pH values and

temperatures. It is ideal for titrations

and very insensitive to stirring.

Ceramic diaphragm: robust for general applications, low

electrolyte outflow rate.

Ground joint preferred for liquids with high solids

diaphragm: contents, easy to clean.

Fibre diaphragm: for robust, minimum-maintenance

electrodes. Preferred for general

applications and field measurments.

KPG® annular gap on minimum-maintenance

diaphragm: electrodes, with symmetric annular

gap, insensitive to soiling.

Many different application conditions require the use of appropriate, specifically designed pH sensors.

For your application, you can select the electrode with the optimal pH glass and diaphragm.
