Page 6: Learning Today ~ Leading Tomorrow

The Copley-Fairlawn City School District Board of Education is committed to providing a program of education which is consistent with the following beliefs:

1. A free society depends upon rational, responsible, and effective citizens.

2. The intellectual, emotional, physical, cultural, social, aesthetic, and ethical development of all students is necessary so that they may achieve their full potential.

4. Involvement in the learning process has more meaning when students participate in setting goals and objectives with effective adult guidance.

5. The development of self-appraisal skills and decision-making techniques should help students in assuming responsibility for setting realistic short and long-term personal, academic, and career goals.

6. Working cooperatively with parents and other citizens, as well as business, industry, and community agencies strengthens active involvement in all phases of planning, developing, and implementing the educational program.

[Adoption Date: July 19, 1994]LEGAL REFERENCE: State Board of Education— Minimum Standards 3301-35-02CROSS REFERENCE: AE, School District Goals and Objectives

The primary goal of schools is to communicate cognitive information; however, this cannot be presented in a vacuum. Schools must also include content that teaches good citizenship. The pluralism of the United States has greatly enriched its culture. An outgrowth of this pluralism is a diverse value system refl ecting the contributions of many ethnic, religious, and racial groups; yet, a consensus of common character traits transcends this cultural diversity. Character traits for which students should strive have been identifi ed by the Copley-Fairlawn City Schools Community Character Education Study Committee. These include, but are not limited to, the following character traits:

Compassion Students should show care, concern, and empathy for the needs of other persons without regard to race, religion, gender, age, economic status, and/or physical and mental condition.

Courtesy Students should display good manners and politeness, showing the same respect for others as they would wish for themselves.

Tolerance Students should strive to discover and learn about people who are different from themselves and about cultures different from their own.

Honesty Students should be truthful and trustworthy in their relationships with others.

Self-Discipline Students should realize the motivations for their actions and give priority to duties and responsibilities rather than to confl icting impulses and desires, being willing to sacrifi ce present satisfaction in order to receive long-term benefi ts.

Diligence Students should pursue worthwhile endeavors, showing persistence, care, and effort.

Responsibility Students should exercise sound thinking and good judgment, as they are personally and ethically accountable for their actions. Students should work with others to strengthen the family and improve their community, the state, the nation, and the world for everyone.

Self-Respect Students should consider the person within themselves, realize their worth and dignity as human beings, and account for their strengths as well as their weaknesses.

Courage Students should develop personal strength and stability to draw upon in times of adversity.

Integrity Students should acquire sound character traits and thereafter seek to live up to them in a consistent manner.

The ultimate goal of education is the positive infl uence of student behavior. Students who are committed to these basic principles will gain respect for themselves and others and will work to improve the social and natural environment for all. The school has the unique opportunity to develop and nurture these traditional principles in every member of its community. 2/93

Academic Challenge Team Wins State Title

Once again, the 2010-2011 Copley High School Academic Challenge team has followed a proud tradition by winning the state championship. Participating team members include captain and senior Saajid Moyen, seniors Jackson Kulas, Sarah Helfer, Edward Pang, and Kerry Johnson; junior Jeffrey Wang; sophomores Keval Yerigeri and Joon Lee. Posting a perfect 7-0 record at the state fi nals, the team beat archrival Northmont from the Dayton area twice by scores of 12 and 9 points. This state championship which included 86 teams from all over Ohio is the sixth won by Copley-Fairlawn; the most of any school since the OAC established the state championship in 1988.

Throughout the school year, the team also won twelve other tournaments and fi nished second in fourteen more. Due to the fact that Copley often fi elds more than one team, many of these victories were by the Varsity II team. Such accomplishments bode well for next year.

Other team members who have been instrumental throughout the year are senior Irtaza Haider, Lear Jiang, Alex Stopar; junior Seth Simon; sophomores Jacob Kulas and Claudine Tebcherani; and freshmen Kerry Crowley, Brandon Hofacker, Inan Husain, Manit Jain, Derek Miller, Tanmay Shah, and Jacob Weisberg.

The varsity team traveled to Atlanta for a national competition on Memorial Day weekend and placed thirteenth in the nation. Two varsity teams and a JV team traveled to Chicago in mid-June for another national competition where they fi nished in the third place.

The team is coached by retired teacher Sue Korosa; English teacher Bren Wion, and biology teacher Melissa Lopez.

In February, the Copley Speech and Debate team competed at the Eastern Ohio District Speech and Debate tournament, which was held at Stow-Munroe Falls High School. Senior Lear Jiang competed in Lincoln-Douglas debate. He fi nished second in the tournament behind Hannah Borselli from Stow-Munroe Falls High School. Both students qualifi ed to compete at the National Forensic League’s National tournament. The tournament was held in Dallas, Texas June 14th through the 17th. Lear did an outstanding job at Nationals debating a total of twelve rounds. He had an overall record of ten wins and two losses. He was undefeated in the six preliminary rounds and ended up fi nishing 15th in the Nation. This is the best any Lincoln-Douglas Debater from Copley-Fairlawn has done at Nationals and the best fi nish of any Ohio Lincoln-Douglas debater in recent history.

MathCounts Team Competes in State CompetitionMathCounts is a nationwide competition designed to promote achievement and enthusiasm towards mathematics. It is sponsored by a variety of professional engineering associations and universities. More than 250 schools and approximately 1700 students in Ohio participate in the competition each year. Eighth grade participants include Zach Li, AJ Forster, Jared Myers, and David Patuwo. All four students placed in the top 25 out of over 100 students. David Patuwo placed 11th, AJ Forster placed 12th, Zach Li placed 13th, and Jared Myers placed 18th. David and Zach, along with Chan Park and Will Gao two seventh grade students, then proceeded to the state competition in Columbus where they fi nished 5th out of over 30 teams. Congratulations to all competitors.

Golden Buckeye Cards Will No Golden Buckeye Cards Will No Longer Be Accepted for Suburban League Longer Be Accepted for Suburban League

EventsEvents

Due to a change in policy by the Suburban League, which became effective August 2004, schools that are members of the Suburban League are no longer able to accept Golden Buckeye Cards for admission to league events.

Senior citizens who wish to attend Copley High School home athletic events, music programs, plays and natatorium programs free of charge should arrange to receive their bi-annual complimentary passes from the Copley-Fairlawn Board of Education Offi ce at 3797 Ridgewood Road, Copley, Ohio 44321. Complimentary passes will be available from the Board of Education Offi ce beginning August 15, 2011, from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. weekdays. Any senior citizen who wishes to take advantage of the free pass offer should bring his/her Golden Buckeye Card to the Board of Education Offi ce when requesting the complimentary Copley-Fairlawn Senior Citizen Pass.

The Copley-Fairlawn Senior Citizen Pass will admit one person to home events and will be valid for two school years. Senior citizens who do not take advantage of this complimentary pass offer will be charged the student rate (currently $4.00) for home athletic events.

We encourage all senior citizens to take advantage of the free pass offer and to attend as many Copley-Fairlawn functions as possible.

Copley High School will offer season athletic passes to adults and students in grades K-8 (see information above for the new Student Athletic Admission Card available to high school students). The cost is $65.00 for adults and $42.00 for students in grades K-8. These passes provide 20 admissions to any home high school athletic event; this represents a savings of over 40% on regular ticket prices. Season passes will be available in the high school athletic offi ce from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. beginning August 15.

TICKET PRICESPresale Tickets ADULTS STUDENTSHome Varsity Football $6.00 $4.00

Athletic Ticket Prices and Passes

The Copley High School Athletic Department will offer a Student Athletic Admission Card to Copley High School students. For a twenty-fi ve dollar fee, the student can purchase an admission card which will get them into EVERY HOME ATHLETIC EVENT (except for home tournament events) for the 2011-2012 school year. This card is available only to current Copley High School students in grades 9-12. Contact the Athletic Department at (330) 664-4833 if you have questions or to purchase a card.

Invitation To Attend Grades K-4 and 5-8 Open Houses

School Lunch News

Families of students in grades Kindergarten through 8 are cordially invited to attend Open Houses.

Arrowhead Primary, Fort Island Primary, Herberich Primary, and Copley-Fairlawn Middle School buildings will hold their open houses before school begins. You are invited to come to school for the following open houses: Grade 5 is Monday, August 22 from 5:00 to 6:30 pm; Kindergarten is Tuesday, August 23 from 4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.; grades 1-4 is Wednesday, August 24 from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.; and grades 6-8 is August 24 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. No group meetings will be convened.

Th is is a time for parents, children, and grandparents to visit the schools. Many times the “fi rst-day jitters” and anxieties of children can be allayed by aff ording them the opportunity to meet their new teachers in a friendly atmosphere with their families. Th e non-threatening nature of the open house combined with children observing and participating in positive, friendly, family discussions with their new teachers can put the minds of children at ease and pay rich dividends in giving them a “fi rst-class” start.

Since we are opening the buildings for this special occasion, we kindly request that the buildings not be entered prior to 3:00 p.m. for grades 1-4. As can be imagined, the teachers will be very busy getting their rooms and papers ready. Th ey simply cannot be involved in discussions and conversations that would

detract from their full preparation for open house. Th ank you for understanding and for your cooperation. We want the event to be successful as well as benefi cial to all. Please feel free to call your individual school building prior to the open house or fi rst day of school if you have questions.

For grades K-4, your attendance is also important for a second reason. We will be sending home with you the opening-day packet of information and forms (including the Emergency Information Form). Th e opening-day packet contains valuable information for you and your child. In order that we can be better prepared to meet the needs of your child, we request that the forms be completed and returned on the fi rst day of school, Th ursday, August 25. Th ank you in advance for your assistance with this!

Th e cafeteria staff will be available to answer your questions and accept payments for pre-paid meals and free and reduced-lunch applications.

Booths will be available in the gymnasiums for our service groups to share information with you. Groups participating include the following: PTA, Scouts, local athletics, and others. Plan to take the time to investigate your areas of interest.

Th e teachers and staff look forward to seeing you at the Open Houses. Come anytime between the times listed.

Lunch Prices for the 2011-2012 School Year: Grades K-4: $2.75 Grades 5-12: $3.00 Extra Milk: $.50 A la carte items will be off ered at all school buildings. Prices will vary.

Opening Day Menu: All Schools: Cheese and Pepperoni pizza

Methods of Payment:

Free or reduced-price lunch program: A free or reduced-price lunch program is available for all eligible students. Please contact the building principal to apply for this confi dential program. (Note: Participation in the free and reduced-price program helps the district with funding for other areas of our curriculum. Th is program is available all school year.)

Our food service department now operates under a computerized point of sale system which allows parents/guardians to deposit money into their student’s account. All of the students have been assigned an ID number which they will keep from kindergarten through 12th grade. Parents/guardians are encouraged to prepay for their student’s lunch with a

check, cash or over the internet using the Pay For It link on the District’s website. Pay For It is available 24/7 to put money on a student’s account. Students still have the option of purchasing their lunch on a daily basis with cash. No change will be given it will be put on the student’s account. All money left on the account at the end of the year stays with the student and will transfer to the next grade and school year. Th ere will be NO CHARGES in the school cafeterias. You might want to put money on the student’s account for days when they might forget their lunch or lunch money. Please do not combine lunch money on the same check or money order for fees. It would also help us if you put your student’s name on the check

Th e Food Service Department serves over 200,000 meals to Copley-Fairlawn students. Food service is a self operating business within the school system that should take in enough money to cover all its costs, including labor and benefi ts. Some students rely on the school lunch program to meet many of their daily food needs. Meals are planned according to recommended daily allowances. A student’s participation in the school lunch program is the guideline used by both the state and federal government to determine reimbursement and commodity food distribution.
