- Men had fled from battle- Many fell and died- Saul and Jonathan are dead
• David asked how he knew Saul and Jonathan were dead

- He happened to be on Mt. Gilboa; there was Saul leaning on his spear- Ph. chariots and riders almost upon him; Saul calls out to the young man; Who are you? Ans. An Amalekite- Saul – Stand over me and kill me! I am in the throes of death, yet still alive

Saul and killed him because he knew Saul couldn’t survive
• He takes Saul’s crown and arm band and brings them to David

Messenger Is Killed vv. 11-16• David and men rend their clothes, mourn
weep, and fast till evening for Saul, Jonathan, the army of the Lord, and the house of Israel
• David asks the young man where he is from

lift your hand to destroy the Lord’s anointed?”

• David calls one of his men to strike him down.

and Jonathan, orders the men of Judah be taught the Lament of the Bow (written in the book of Jashur)

David King Over Judah vv. 1-4a• In the course of time David inquires of
the Lord shall he go to a town in Judah• The Lord answers, Hebron• David, his wives, the men and their
families go there• The men of Judah came to Hebron and
anointed David king over the house of Judah Gen. 49:10

Kindness to Men of Jabesh vv. 4b-7• David is told the men of Jabesh-Gilead
had buried Saul so he sends messengers to give the Lord’s blessings
• He promises them he will show the same favor
• And announces that Judah has named him king

Ish-Bosheth King of Israel vv. 8-11• Meanwhile, Abner takes Ish-bosheth (aka
Eshbaal, another son of Saul) to Mahanaim
• Abner make him king over Gilead, Ashur, Jezreel, Ephraim, Benjamin, and all Israel
• Ish-bosheth was 40 years old and reigned two years

Civil War Erupts vv. 12-30• Abner with men of Ish-bosheth go to the
pool of Gibeon• There they meet Joab with David’s men• They sit opposite the pool and come up
with a show-down, young men in hand-to-hand fighting – 12 vs. 12

Civil War Erupts vv. 12-30• The men grab each other by the head to
thrust a dagger into the others side• The place is named Helkath Hazzurim or
Field of Daggers (or Hostilities)• The fighting is fierce, they fall to the
ground fighting• Yet David’s men are victorious!

Civil War Erupts vv. 12-30• The show-down turns into a melee• Three sons of Zeruiah (David’s sister)
are there; Joab, Abishai, and Asahel• Asahel, as fleet footed as a gazelle,
chases after Abner turning neither right or left
• Abner asks if Asahel is chasing him and gives warning

Civil War Erupts vv. 12-30• Abner warns Asahel again, but Asahel
continues the pursuit• Abner then thrusts the butt of his spear
into Asahel’s stomach so that it comes out through his back; there he falls and dies
• Every man stops when they come to the place where Asahel has fallen

Civil War Erupts vv. 12-30• Joab and Abishai continue pursuing
Abner until sunset• At the hill of Giah the men of Benjamin
rally behind Abner and take a stand• Abner calls out to Joab, “Must the sword
devour forever?...”• Joab blows the trumpet and calls off the
pursuit

Civil War Erupts vv. 12-30• Abner and his men retreat through the
night, across the Arabah, the Jordan River, and return to Mahanaim
• Joab and his men march all night back to Hebron
• Asahel is buried in Bethlehem • Besides Asahel, nineteen of David’s men
are missing; 360 of Abner’s men killed
