Dear Friends,

Magellan Community Charities is a newly established community-based non profit group with strong links to Canada’s Portuguese community.

As proud Canadians we are fortunate and grateful to those who opened doors for us. As we witness an alarming lack of suitable housing support for our elders, we have a duty to give back. Magellan Community Charities was formed to provide long-term care and assisted-living to meet the critical needs of our most vulnerableseniors.

We have assembled a strong and passionate team to build a unique seniors’ complex, consisting of 47affordable living units and 256 subsidized long-term care beds. In all, this project will provide acontinuum of care for up to 350 seniors in the heart of Toronto.

Like you, we appreciate the acute need to provide safe accommodation and appropriate services to ouraging parents and, in particular, we recognize the tremendous benefits of providing seniors’care in a culturally-sensitive environment.

Please join us in this important capital campaign to Open the Doors forSeniors.

Life is a journey, a voyage of discovery. For many of our parents that was a real and lived experience. They embarked on a journey to an unknown country and a new life, arriving in Canada with their suitcases full of hopes and dreams.

Now that they are older, life is presenting them with new challenges, and it is presenting us with the opportunity to give back.We are Magellan Community Foundation, a not-for-profit and registered charity that supports the core work of Magellan Community Charities in developing a state-of-the-art seniors’ centre in Toronto that will provide exceptional care and support for Portuguese-speaking seniors. It will be the first seniors’ centre of its kind in the GTA, offering culturally sensitive care. The Magellan Centre will ensure that seniors receive the highest quality care in familiar and reassuring surroundings.

Construction is estimated to begin in Fall of 2021, with the projected official opening planned for Summer of 2023.

We are inviting the community to support the Voyage of Discovery Capital Campaign to raise the necessary funds for construction. We need your help to build the Magellan Centre.

Our families took a leap of faith when they came to Canada many years ago, let us honour them today with our own courage and gratitude.

About Magellan Community Charities

“The $15.2 M incremental investment will enable us to ensure the Magellan Centre will be a home away from home for many Portuguese speaking seniors. Family members will feel rest assured their loved ones will live in a state of dignity and respect, and share in all elements of living in a community which is welcoming, accepting and inclusive of everyone.”

Sara Isabel DiasExecutive Director Magellan Community Charities

Magellan Community Charities (“MC Charities”) was founded with the express purpose to build and operate a seniors’ centre that would offer culturally sensitive care to aging members of all Portuguese-Canadian communities. Magellan Community Charities is the parent of two not-for-profit entities: Magellan Community Care (“MC Care”) and Magellan Community Housing (“MC Housing”). MC Care will oversee the long-term care operations. MC Housing will oversee the assisted living portion of the facility, as well as the affordable housing units. Magellan Community Foundation (“MC Foundation”), is the registered charity, to raise funds for the capital campaign to build the Centre.

Why we are buildingTaking care of our elders is one of the cornerstones of our culture. We do it out of love and respect for them, and in graditude for all they have done for us. This will be the first and only Centre devoted specifically to Portuguese-speaking seniors.

It is our vision and mission to ensure that our senior citizens live in a comfortable and pleasant facility that delivers services in both English and Portuguese, while offering an environment that is culturally and gastronomically attuned to their roots. In the true spirit of our culture, it will also be an inclusive facility, welcoming all seniors regardless of ethnicity.

The Project to Date

On April 18th, 2018, the Ontario Ministry of Long-Term Care (“MOLTC”) awarded MC Care 256 long-term care beds as part of an initiative to significantly increase the number of LTC beds, across the Province over the next five years.

In awarding 256 beds, the MOLTC requires that the long-term care and services includes: (1) access to health professionals who speak Portuguese, (2) cultural and spiritual activities in a culturally sensitive environment, (3) social and recreational programs delivered in Portuguese, and (4) meals that include traditional dishes.

Less than a year later, on March 28th, 2019, the City of Toronto awarded MC Charities a parcel of vacant land at 640 Lansdowne Avenue, for 99 years at a rent of $1/year. This site is in the heart of the Portuguese-Canadian community where a high demand for long-term care services exist.

“With our aging LUSO population, it is evident that as a community, we must give back and offer our seniors’ dignified assistance, care and a safe place of comfort and familiarity that embraces a nurturing and professional ambiance. Respectfully delivering services in Portuguese, offering an environment that is culturally and gastronomically similar to their LUSO heritage. Moreover, as a society, we must collectively give back and accommodate without hesitation. Hence, allowing our elderly population to thrive and engage with others in a dignified and healthy lifestyle, with access to services and programs in Portuguese.”

“Magellan Community Care has Abrigo’s full support on this initiative. We believe that the Magellan group is the ideal entity to develop a Seniors Community Hub. The senior leadership team is visionary, experienced, firmly rooted in the Portuguese community and open to an inclusive community planning process. We are confident in your ability to move this project successfully forward. “

Abrigo Centre

A Continuum of CareThe Magellan Centre will offer a continuum of care under one facility. Realizing that not all seniors in our community require long-term care, the Centre will also accommodate 47 assisted living units.

Assisted living is a residential option for seniors who need more personalized services, from meal preparation to housekeeping. This differs from long-term care, which accommodates and supports people who can no longer live independently and who may require 24-hour medical/nursing care and supervision. Magellan has committed to making at least 47 of the assisted living units “affordable,” in accordance with City’s Open Door Affordable Housing Program, which gives priority to low-income seniors.

Magellan Centre will be a leader in care for the elderly providing quality services and programs in a safe, modern and accessible setting. As a Community Hub, it will welcome all seniors and their families to participate in shared experiences and encourage a sense of belonging.

Design and Features of Magellan CentreThe Magellan Centre will be built on the northwest corner of Lansdowne Avenue and Paton Road, on 1.18 acres facing Lansdowne Avenue. The site is in a mature area, conveniently located to public transit near the Bloor subway station.

The second and third floors will accommodate the 60 assisted living units. The remaining top four floors will be home to the 256 long-term care units. These units will be grouped into eight pods, which will offer residents smaller communities in which to form bonds and enjoy activities together.

An exciting feature of the Magellan Centre will be the Community Hub located on the ground floor. It will incorporate shared space for both the long-term care and the assisted living residents while extending a warm welcome to the larger community as well. This community space is designed to promote inclusivity outreach. It will be used to support recreational, educational and culturally focused programs, such as arts and crafts, cooking classes, movie nights, exercise classes, interactive workshops and a computer lab hub/learning centre.

Included in the Centre’s design are main floor spaces for medical services to address the health and wellness needs of seniors.

Positive ImpactsThe Magellan Centre will have a profound and positive impact on Portuguese Canadian seniors and their loved ones.

For Seniors:The Centre will offer all residents peace of mind and a sense of security in a familiar and caring atmosphere. Our seniors will be supported by a wide range of services and feel at home in an environment that is culturally appropriate for them. They will also enjoy ample opportunities to participate in community-based activities.

For Families:Residents’ families will be rest assured that their loved ones are being cared for in a home-like environment. They will be able to spend time visiting their loved ones as well as connect with other families. Families will be better informed about the resources that are available to them and be able to more confidently navigate available services.

For the Community:The Centre will be an integral part of the community and all age groups who wish to engage with our elders. Magellan Community Charities will develop strong relationships with health organizations that serve the neighbourhood.

Magellan will not only address the need for more long-term care beds in the GTA, but it alleviate pressure on hospitals.

“It is evident that we have a duty as a community to give back and offer our seniors dignified assistance and care. Further, we have an obligation to offer a safe place of comfort and familiarity that embraces and nourishes our heritage.

We Need Your SupportMagellan Community Charities is honoured to be developing our community’s long-awaited Portuguese Canadian seniors’ centre. We invite you to join us on this historic fundraising journey to build the first centre in the GTA offering culturally sensitive care to Portuguese-Canadian seniors.

The total cost to build the Magellan Centre stands at $84.1 million. It’s projected to be funded mostly by federal loans, grants and a mortgage but we need to raise a $15.2 million shortfall through community donation and we need your support.

We are a generous community, with a proud tradition of taking care of our elders. So let’s build the Magellan Centre together, com carinho, amizade e saudade.

“Developing the Seniors Community Hub would enable Portuguese seniors and other at-risk individuals in the area to maintain their family and community linkages and have excellent access to the services they need in a stable and familiar living environment.”

Davenport Perth Neighbourhood and Community Health Centre

“The linguistic barriers encountered today by older generations of Portuguese, Brazilian, Mozambican, and other Lusophone immigrants are still very significant. A large number of Portuguese-speaking seniors in Toronto lack the English skills necessary to fully participate in Canadian society, without the support of personal networks or ethnolinguistic community institutions. When forced into English-only long-term care facilities, these seniors often experience alienation, isolation, loss of purpose and sense of personal dignity, leading to poor mental health and emotional well being. Naturally, an individual’s personal networks dwindle as one grows older. But not necessary one’s community support; your organization being a case in point.”
