DIPK: 12346 Sd/- Executive Engineer 004 SMC initiates process to implement Solid Waste Management Rules MUDASIR YAQOOB Srinagar, Mar 4: After inordi- nate delay, the Srinagar Munici- pal Corporation (SMC) has initi- ated the process to implement Solid Waste Management Rules (SWMR) 2016 in the summer capital. The development follows a series on reports in Greater Kashmir highlighting failure of SMC to implement the SWMR. The corporation has initi- ated the process in few areas of south city. To implement the SWMR in other areas of the summer capital, the SMC Com- missioner Dr Shafqat Khan has set up a committee to seek rec- ommendations. “Commit- tee of officers is constituted to discuss and submit their recommendations for the agenda points for contract committee all central spon- sored schemes including Solid Waste Management,” reads the order issued by SMC Commissioner vide no 364 of 2017. Besides nominating SMC top officials, the members of committee, the SMC Commis- sioner has also written to the heads of ERA and other agen- cies to seek expertise from their officials. The committee is headed by SMC Joint Com- missioner. Sources said that Commis- sioner tightened the noose around the officials as Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti has directed the authorities to restore glory of the summer capital on priority. The Commissioner held a meeting in this regard and direct- ed officials to expedite process for segregation of garbage. “We have to restore the glory of Srinagar city. We have to make efforts to make it number one clean city. Implementation of SWMR is the best way to achieve this goal,” he told the officials. “We cannot go to people with excuses and express helplessness for not redress- ing their day to day griev- ances. The government has given us authority to work to the satisfaction of public. We have enforcement wing, con- struction wing and all that what needs to sanitize city. It is time to act,” he added. He also directed officials to give people easy access to their offices, listen to them and redress their grievances without any delay. “Any individual or a group of people come with expecta- tions to us. We ought to serve public at large. Give patient hearing to delegations and do whatever you can do maximum under rules,” he directed offi- cials. The Commissioner also talked about traffic jams, encroachment of footpaths by vendors and stray animals in detail with the officials and asked them to come up with sug- gestions and feedback to resolve these issues. As reported earlier, SMC has failed to implement Solid Waste Management Rules ---2000 (SWMR) to dispose bio-degrad- able and non-biodegradable waste in segregation. NHM employees' protest march foiled MUDASIR YAQOOB Srinagar, Mar 4: Police on Saturday foiled the protest march of National Health Mission (NHM) employees by detaining scores of them. Hundreds of NHRM employees, mostly females, assembled at Press Enclave here on fourth consecutive day. They were demanding regularization of their ser- vices. Police swung into action and detained scores of them as they tried to march towards the Residency Road. On February 1, the NHM employees had called for 72-hour pen down strike. However, they extended it for next 72 hours on February 3. Shaheen Shah, president NHM Employees Associa- tion expressed resentment over the “cold response” by the government. “NHM employees work round the clock in health institutions to provide better health care facilities to general public. NHM employees have com- pleted more than nine years of contractual services and most of the employees have crossed their age bar limit. Government has confirmed the service of all state con- tractual employees in terms of SRO 255, but left out NHM employees,” he said. Srinagar, Mar 4: Assistant Commissioner Food Safety Srinagar today said following complaints that some pulses are colored, polished and then sold in market, samples of dif- ferent varieties of pulses were liſted from city markets for labo- ratory analysis “Accordingly, a team of food safety officers headed by the Assistant Commissioner seized 4970 kilograms of Split Channa, Arhar and Moongi from markets at Nowhatta, Batamaloo and Gogjibagh in Srinagar. Samples of seized pulses were dispatched for food analysis for further inves- tigation. Consumers have been advised to conduct a simple test of washing pulses in a bowl of water to see if lather or colour appears.
