“It is not about the technology; it’s about sharing knowledge and information, communicating

efficiently, building learning communities and creating a culture of professionalism -These are the

key responsibilities of all educational leaders”. – Marion Ginapolis

Why Integrate Social Media?

Social Media puts learning in the hands of the student:

Web 2.0 allows learning anywhere, anytime; not just in one particular learning environment for an hour a day.

Web 2.0 encourages:

Connectivity Depth of understanding

Self-expression Learning (not teaching)

Collaboration Personal Productivity

Individual Pacing

Why Integrate Social Media?

If we as educators want to extend their knowledge in and outside the classroom, it is important that we engage with them where they are! Students spend roughly 3-6

hours per week on social networking sites

(…or the amount of time they are supposed to spend outside of class studying.)

To-Do:

1. Integrate Social Media into curriculum

2. Breathe! (Yikes!)

Stats on Social Media Use• 83% of young adults (18-29 year olds) use social

media (Pew Research Center, 2012)• 82% of college students reportedly login to

Facebook several times per day (Quan-Haase & Young, 2010).

Using vs Integrating Tech• Using technology is a random and sporadic

process where the main goal is to instruct learners on content not to engage them with content.

• Technology integration is the planned and highly structured, purposeful use of technology with the ultimate goal being to engage learners and help them develop new thinking skills.

Extending Your Reach

Extending your reach includes continuing the conversations outside the regularly scheduled coursework

Why do we care about the reach of our message?

Measuring Your Results

How you define success is based on your goals

Project, performance, portfolio based is ideal

Most applications have built-in analytics but the more important piece remains the engagement and interaction

If I introduce an application to use to

explore a particular topic of interest then

later observe the learner in the environment utilizing/discussing/ teaching lessons learned it was a successful endeavor!
