[ 123 ] DISCOGRAPHY “Tiny Little Heart Attack” comes from the action/comedy film Career Opportunities. The movie involves a jail break, stolen diamonds, and a newsman who has been fired from his job but has a chance to get it back because he’s a part of this big story. In the end, all’s well that ends well, and this story ends with recovered diamonds and a romantic wedding. The recording group, Money Talks, was brought to Curb by their managers and producers, Paul Palmer and Jeffrey Shucraft. “Funny How Time Slips Away” by Al Green and Lyle Lovett won a Grammy by bringing together two of the most uniquely gifted artists in the music business. The song – originally recorded by Willie Nelson – was perfect because of its history as both a country and an R&B song. In country, it has been a chart record for Billy Walker (1961), Narvel Felts (1975) and Danny Davis & Willie Nelson (1980); in R&B, it made the charts for Joe Hinton (1964), Dorothy Moore (1976) and The Spinners (1983). Hank Thompson’s first hit came in 1948; “Six Pack To Go” was Hank’s 41st chart record and 25th Top Ten. Released in 1960, the record also reached the Pop chart. Thompson served in the Navy during World War II, where he began his career as a performer. In 1997, Curb Records released Hank Thompson And Friends, which featured the Country Music Hall of Famer in duets with Lyle Lovett, George Jones, Kitty Wells, and – on “Six Pack to Go” – with Vince Gill, who is now himself a member of the Country Music Hall of Fame. Hank Thompson has released five albums for Curb including all of his hits. Moe Bandy had more than a decade’s worth of hits, beginning with his “I Just Started Hatin’ Cheatin’ Songs Today.” He joined Curb Records in 1986 when his manager, Woody Bowles, brought the singer to the label. His second release was “Till I’m Too Old To Die Young,” which went to number six on the Country chart in Billboard. Jerry Kennedy produced this record for Bandy, as well as “Americana,” which reached number eight on the Country charts in 1988. 176 177 179 178 “TINY LITTLE HEART ATTACK” (FROM THE MOTION PICTURE CAREER OPPORTUNITIES ) ARTIST: MONEY TALKS WRITER: HAROLD WIIK/SVERRE WIIK PUBLISHER: BEEBLEBROX MUSIC (BMI)/MIKE CURB MUSIC (BMI) “FUNNY HOW TIME SLIPS AWAY” ARTIST: AL GREEN AND LYLE LOVETT WRITER: WILLIE NELSON PUBLISHER: SONY/ATV TREE PUBLISHING (BMI) “SIX PACK TO GO” ARTIST: VINCE GILL AND HANK THOMPSON WRITER: HANK THOMPSON, JONNY LOWE, DICK HART PUBLISHER: SONGS OF UNIVERSAL-POLYGRAM INT’L, INC. Conway Twitty had a number-one rockhit with “It’s Only Make Believe” onMGM in 1958; in 1966, he moved over tocountry music and had a string of hits, but“It’s Only Make Believe” was always astandard part of his show. Ronnie McDowell’s first hit was “The

King Is Gone,” a tribute to Elvis Presleyreleased shortly after Elvis died in 1977.He got his start as a recording artistbecause his voice sounded so much likeElvis’s, but McDowell carved out his owncareer on Epic and Curb Records. McDowell joined Curb Records in

1986, and in 1988, his recording of “It’s

Only Make Believe” reached number eighton the Country chart.“Buddy Killen introduced me to

Ronnie McDowell,” said Curb. “It was aspecial event when he recorded an uptempo version of ‘It’s Only Make Believe’with Conway Twitty. These are the recordsthat really mean a lot to me, because theyconnect us to our past. Curb Records is 50years of rock n’ roll, and this song takes usback to our roots. To have Conway Twittysing on someone else’s version of his bigrock hit – well, it had to be darn good. This is a very special record.”

The film Dirty Dancing was aperiod piece set in the mid-1960s,with a soundtrack of songs like“Big Girls Don’t Cry” and “Stay.”The music director wanted “You’veLost That Loving Feeling” by theRighteous Brothers, but that songhad been committed to Top Gun. “(I’ve Had) The Time Of My

Life” was written by three basicallyunknown writers, and MichaelLloyd figured out a way to cut itso that it captured the sound and

feel of “You’ve Lost ThatLovin’ Feeling.”

Bill Medley’s daughter was tobe born the week the song wasscheduled to be recorded, and hewanted to postpone the studiosession. While the budget wasmodest and the schedule wastight, he agreed to record thesong. The label had to findsomeone to sing it with him, andeveryone settled on JenniferWarnes as the artist.

Dirty Dancing, starring PatrickSwayze and Jennifer Grey, wasreleased in 1987; “(I’ve Had) TheTime Of My Life” went to numberone on the Adult Contemporarychart, where it remained for fourweeks; it also went number one onthe Billboard Hot 100 Chart. The song became the biggest

hit of Bill Medley’s solo career, and the soundtrack sold 25million records worldwide.

Sylvester was the name of a horse that a 16-year oldorphan struggling to raise her two younger brothersdecides to train for the Olympics jumping event. StarringMelissa Gilbert (of Little House on the Prairie fame) as

Charlie and Richard Farnsworth, the soundtrack wasproduced by T-Bone Burnette and Steve Berlin andfeatured Los Lobos doing “Ay Te Dejo En San Antonio.”

There is nothing more painful in the music industrythan for an artist to lose his life. In this case Rick Nelsonwas recording what would be his come back album forCurb Records in 1985 when he lost his life on New Year’sEve of that year. Rick had an amazing career in the musicindustry that started when he was a young boy on theOzzie and Harriet television show, starring with hisparents and his older brother David. Rick started outsinging on the family television show and he wasultimately signed by Imperial Records, which was thelabel owned by Lou Chudd and operated by Mike Curb’smentor, Eddie Ray. Rick recorded for four different labels, including Verve, Decca, Imperial and Curb. In addition tohaving the first number one record with “Poor LittleFool” on the Billboard Hot 100 chart when it started in1958, Rick had 20 top ten records on the Billboard chartand was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Like so many teen artists, as time passed by, Rick wantedto do more of his own new music and formed his ownband The Stone Canyon Band, but wherever heperformed, his audiences wanted to hear his hits. Thisresulted in a performance at Madison Square Gardenwhere he was booed by the audience for not singing hishits, but it also spawned the recording of “Garden Party”that played a major part in re-launching his career.Because of the fact that his hits were on various labels andbecause of the fact that “Garden Party” featured his lower, more mature voice, Rick was willing to compromise withhis fans and re-record his hits as close to the originalversions as possible, but featuring the vocal sound that hehad on “Garden Party”. This resulted in the album Best OfRicky Nelson which Curb Records released shortly afterhis death and which has been certified as a Gold recordby the Recording Industry Association of America.

All Dogs Go To Heaven – the animated film that fea-tured the voices of Burt Reynolds, Dom DeLuise, JudithBarsi and Loni Anderson – was released by United Artistsin 1989. Irene Cara, who sang the title song fromFlashdance, and Freddie Jackson, who’s “Rock Me

Tonight” and “You Are My Lady” were Top 20 pop hitsin 1985, combine on this song written by Mike Curb andMichael Lloyd with Al Kasha and Joel Hirschhorn, leg-endary film songwriters who won the Academy Award forThe Morning After.

“Honey Love” was originally recorded by ClydeMcPhatter and The Original Drifters. Unfortunately,McPhatter died and The Drifters continued on with vari-ous lead singers. Bill Pinkney’s Original Drifters askedRonnie McDowell to sing Clyde McPhatter’s part on a

classic album, featuring 14 recordings. At the same time that The Righteous Brothers had a

major hit with “Unchained Melody” on Curb’s label in thepop-rock market, Ronnie McDowell’s version of the samesong became his last major country hit.

At the time that the movie Ghost wasbeing completed, Mike Curb needed arecording of “Unchained Melody” by TheRighteous Brothers – it was originally aTop Five hit by the group in 1965. Hecalled Bill Medley, who promised that heand Bobby Hatfield – the other RighteousBrother – would produce the session. Things did not go well at first, so Curb

contacted Buddy Killen, who had pro-duced the song with Ronnie McDowell. But Medley told Mike that TheRighteous Brothers had finally “hooked”the new recording, and the single went

Platinum when it was released in 1990. Curb also issued a dance version of the

song, and then had The RighteousBrothers re-record their old hits, whichresulted in a multi-platinum album.

Delbert McClinton and his band backed up Lightnin’Hopkins, Howlin’ Wolf and Big Joe Turner during hisstint in Fort Worth; later, he played harmonica on “Hey!Baby” by Bruce Channel. On “Every Time I Roll The Dice,” McClinton does a

song by veteran songwriters Max D. Barnes and Troy Seals

under the production of Don Was. McClinton always pre-ferred performing before a live audience rather than work-ing in the studio. In this case, he worked on a record thatreached the Top 15 on Billboard’s Main Rock chart. Thisled to Delbert’s biggest album, which included hisGrammy-winning duet with Bonnie Raitt.

We were fortunate to be able to release DeanMartin’s greatest recordings featuring “You’reNobody Till Somebody Loves You”. Shortly afterthe album was released, “That’s Amore” becamethe theme song for the motion picture

Moonstruck which won the Academy Awardwith Olympia Dukakis. The album also featuredmany of the other great songs of Dean Martin. The album sold over one million copies.
