For the Aspiring Artist
So what is all the fuss about internet radio? Are people really listening
to internet radio? Why is internet radio important to aspiring artists?
How can an internet talk show help an artist?
You may be asking all of the above questions or none of the above
questions. I submit to you that if you are an aspiring artist, new artist
or independent artist, you should be paying close attention to inter-
net radio. Check out a few poll results from the Pew Research Center
(Pew Internet & American Life Project):
Do you ever use the Internet to...listen to music online at a website
for a radio station, music store, recording artist or music service?
39% of 2,253 people polled said yes.
In the past year, have you learned about music you might want to
listen to or buy from...listening to an Internet radio station?
25% of 2,400 people polled said yes.
Do you ever use the Internet to...pay to access or download digital
content online, such as a newscast, sporting event, or radio show?
13% of 2,400 people polled said yes.
Internet radio is your friend and an excellent platform to showcase
your music ministry and obtain interview opportunities. As you may
be aware, Terrestrial radio is a hard nut to crack concerning airplay and
interview opportunities. While internet radio does not have the number
of listeners that Terrestrial radio can offer, there are key benefits to the
aspiring, new and or independent artist that should not be ignored…
To list a Few: • There are numerous internet radio stations available and many
target a certain listener group (ex. Contemporary, Hip Hop, etc). This
benefits the artist because your music gets in front of your target
audience & those likely to purchase your project.
• The listener is online already so they are closer to the buying &
downloading options available to purchase your product versus a
listener in the car.
• Many internet radio stations tweet or post on Social Networking
sites the song/artist that is “now playing”. This benefits the artist be-
cause listeners know exactly who to connect with & whose music to
purchase.
• Internet radio is truly global. In addition, some US based internet ra-
dio stations have international stations as well.
• There are numerous internet talk radio shows with hosts that are
across the country.
• In most cases, your internet radio interview is available for re-play.
This includes just a few benefits of internet radio!
