Africa Health 25September 2013
Events
Lagos and Nairobi are the hubs for two big regional meetings happening within 3 weeks of each other. Bryan Pearson reports.
It seems a long time ago now, but in 1987 I can still vividly remember the inaugural Medic Africa meeting which we held at the then Holiday Inn hotel in Lagos, Nigeria. My recollection was that we had around 250 sq m of space from around 20 companies participat-ing in what was the first formal medical exhibition in the country. There were no exhibition stands and we cobbled together a solution via some aluminium poles from the Kaduna Furniture and Carpet Company (KFCC) My old friend Dr Balogun got his workshop team to prepare a couple of hundred sheets of 16 mm plywood – which then needed some modifications to take some novel clamps (that we imported from the UK) to hold things together – and then they had to be painted.
How times change. In October the meeting spans some 2500 sq m of exhibitor space in a US$45 m bespoke Expo Centre at the Eko Hotel (which the older amongst us will recall… used to be the Holiday Inn). The meeting had grown usefully but the new arrange-ments (commenced last year) whereby the meeting had become a formal joint venture between us (FSG) and Informa Lifesciences (the organisers of Arab Health ex-hibition) elevated the meeting onto a whole new strato-sphere. And as a sign of things to come, we even have companies building double-decker stands this year. This is indeed a far cry from those rudimentary stands we started out with back in the 80s!
Medic East Africa is not quite as big, but is as big as the KICC venue will allow it to be for now. For next year we will expand out into some special tents which will allow for the growth we need.
And the great thing about both shows is the quality of the exhibitors. The big inter-national names are signed up, as well as many of the new players. The growth is also testament to how health services in Africa have moved rapidly forward in the last 10 to 15 years. Previous to this the ‘market’ was not seen as being big enough for many of the big names. Things have changed now. And that is good for all.
And of course there are
a series of conferences at both events. Conference details are given on the upcoming pages, and they range between management/finance subjects to detailed clinical topics. But the big advantage is that all of them are accredited with Continuing Professional Develop-ment points, so providing greater rhyme and reason for people to attend.
You can pre-register on the web site for the respec-tive meeting (www.medicwestafrica.com or www.mediceastafrica.com). Visiting the exhibitions is free; attending the CPD accredited conferences is via a mod-est registration fee, which is as usual cheaper booked in advance of the meeting than cash payments made on the day.
